Playing Portal Natively on a MacBook Pro (Mid-2014)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 20:48

Hello! I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my MacBook Pro (Mid-2014) and bought Portal. Unfortunately, the game crashes after the menu so, I tried adding "-vulkan" to the launch options, and now the game won't even launch. Using Proton with Wine3D makes everything darker and runs poorly. I created a partition for Windows and the game works great in there, but Microsoft Windows is awful and I'd much prefer to use Linux. Is there anything I can do to get Portal to run natively? Thanks in advance :)

can't launch megabonk

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 19:11

Pretty much every game i have tried has worked without issues so far until now. Megabonk won't launch no matter what proton version i try. I didnt even get this error message until i tried proton-cachyos (native package). Used arch-update on cachyos to update everything (i do it regularly anyway). I have verified the game files through steam, also re-downloaded the game. Protondb has this game on platinum and the reviews there showed none has this issue.

I have Asus G15 AE laptop with 6800m (6700xt equivalent) on Cachyos. still new to linux in general and idk what to do next.

Edit: Tried the native first before trying the proton compatibility layers

Shaders cache giving me issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 18:58

So I have this old build laptop that I installed arch linux on and am using to play old and indie games mostly on it. I had just installed fallout new Vegas which is a pretty old game but it was running absolutely horribly. I went back lowered settings and noticed that my detected gpu in the game launcher is the Rx 5600 xt which is in my PC and not in the laptop. So could this be the reason? Did steam install shaders cache for a gpu that's not even there making my lag spike so bad. Like I can't even get into gun fights it gets laggy and stutters a lot. How can I solve this pls. Note: it ran fine when I had windows on this laptop.

I've been thinking about switching to Linux but...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 18:45

I was wondering what you guys do for games that require windows? Do you dual boot? And does Linux run better than Windows? Especially on amd builds?

My only experience with Linux is my steam deck so I only know some games can't run on the steam deck because it's Linux based. Like BF6.

Assassin's Creed Shadows crashes after intro video.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 17:25

I've recently installed Fedora KDE and just getting Ubisoft Connect running in Lutris is causing me headaches. It crashes immediately on default wine version wine-ge-8-26-x86_64. After a lot of waiting and retries, it eventually manages to launch on Proton-Experimental.

After installing AC Shadows through the launcher, I tried launching it using Proton-Experimental. It starts and goes through the initial introduction videos. Then the instant it encounters the menu UI, the game closes.

Runner options

Game closes but it doesn't stop running. Ubisoft Connect then pops up and shows the game isn't running.

I've tried the other wine versions and now I can't even get the game to launch again.

Destiny 2 through proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 17:24

I created a new topic on Bungie's forum regarding allowing the game to run through proton. If those interested in seeing this happening could comment under the post, it would help get some traction.

Volumetric fog issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 16:34

Hi all, I searched for this issue for a bit and there seems to be a thread here and there, but nothing super concrete.

There is an issue with all my games regarding Volumetric Fog, every game starts overlaying it over everything. For now I've had it happen in Elden Ring, Armoured Core 6 and Alan Wake, all on Steam/Proton.

I can work around it by setting the quality to max, but I'd like my frames back. Is this a widely know issue and is there some fix for it?

Other than setting the quality to max, it seems restarting the game works as well, and in the case od ER, just quit to menu and go back, but it comes back as soon as I die and respawn, and sometimes when I just rest at a grace (I assume the layers get reloaded when that happens in ER).

I'm on Fedora 42 KDE with nVidia drivers, all up to date. Games work fine otherwise.

White Lines on Edge of Screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 14:48

I have not had any major issues running Jedi Survivor in the past, but I started to randomly get visual artifacts (not sure if that's what it is) on the edge of the screen. My PC has a 9800 X3D and 9070XT - graphics set to Epic, Ray Tracing on, and FSR set to Quality. Also, I have been getting a low FPS count since this issue started. https://steamcommunity.com/app/1774580/discussions/0/3828666283439073196/ and https://imgur.com/a/GxI2Ldu (not my post but the picture in the original post is the exact same issue I am having). I am just confused why this issue just randomly popped up now when I didn't have it before. I am mainly worried if this indicates an issue with my GPU which is very new. FYI: I am running Bazzite KDE

Flydigi Apex 5 Steam input trigger issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. Oktober 2025 - 14:43

Hey all,

(I'm a fan of bulleted lists so people can easily scan through my questions and get a quick picture/refresher)

I'm trying to use my new Flydigi Apex 5 to play Hollow Knight, and after 3 days of struggling with it and countless Google searches, I need some help. My setup is as follows:

  • Computer running Arch latest, all libs and OS up to date
  • Steam big picture mode
  • Connected via controllers wireless dongle
  • No custom controller modifications, out of box settings

I'm encountering an issue with the triggers in that I cannot get them to function in a way that makes the game playable for me. Issues:

  • Pulling a trigger activates the intended action only at the mid range of the trigger
  • Performing a "full pull" cancels the action
  • Releasing the trigger to the mid range activates the action again
  • Performing a very quick full pull does nothing whatsoever, despite the same full pull registering on a controller test baked into steam

I'm relatively new to the soft/full pull staged implementation in triggers, as all controllers I've used before only have either analog or digital output per trigger, never both. I'd love to be able to rapidly pull the trigger down and get the same response as when I perform only a partial pull. I also don't want the action to be taken a second time as I release the trigger.

What's interesting is this worked perfectly fine out of the box, and after several days of playing, without updating anything it suddenly started working very differently. I know how unlikely it is that it would just change like that with no intervention, and I'm sure something happened that is just invisible to me, or I'm looking in the wrong place.

Here are the validations I've performed:

  • Flidigi software: verified all button mappings, including the trigger pulls and actuation percentages
  • Steam BPM settings: same as above, verifying trigger pulls and actuation percentages/indices
  • Verified controller firmware matches OOB and os/software versions (xinput primarily) are the same as a week ago, when I started playing

And finally here are the troubleshooting steps/attempted fixes I've tried:

  • Disable Steam input
  • Enable Steam input (all other steps taken with steam input enabled)
  • Tried team cherry's official layout for the game
  • Clear soft pull bindings in Steam input
  • Clear hard pull bindings in Steam input
  • Set hard pull and soft pull to send the same button
  • Disable analog output
  • Set soft pull trigger to one step above minimum, set soft pull dead zone to minimum, set softpull end range to maximum
  • Set threshold trigger style to hip fire exclusive, analog turned on/off
  • Set threshold trigger style to simple/hair trigger

... - and a combination of the above too large for me to keep track of, but all of the above issues persist.

I'm sure I'm overlooking something. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
