Is Linux for gaming a good idea?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Aug 2024 - 2:05am

I mostly do PS3 and NSwitch emulation and steam for gaming, but I'm thinking of getting a new 2 in 1 laptop as mine is almost 7 years old. And I'm wondering if getting a Linux laptop is a good idea. Will having Linux based laptop cause alot of problems? If there are windows programs (possible not gaming related) that I need to download in the future, are there any work arounds to get them working on Linux? I know almost nothing about Linux other than it's an alternative os that most people don't use

Red Dead Redemption 2 on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Aug 2024 - 1:18am

There is something I am somewhat confused by...

I currently do most gaming on Linux now due to Valve and the open-source community (I appreciate your work greatly), but there is a game which doesn't seem to in my experience, require a compatibility layer (Proton, Wine etc.) in order to play on Linux. Yes, that is Red Dead Redemption 2.

I bought it on Steam years ago, then started looking at the game again about nearly a year ago while I was on Linux, and noticed the 'INSTALL' button was painted blue. I checked the Compatibility layer option, and found none was forced.

Every time I get in to arguments with people online (not many, no hostilities), they claim it's not a native Linux game. The part which bothers me, is that's what the search engines seem to claim!!! What's going on here???

Yes, I have checked the Force Compatibility Layer option many times, it's definitely turned off. I know that Red Dead Redemption 2 has Vulkan support, which makes perfect sense that such a game can be natively playable on Linux. However, DOOM 2016 (which I'm certain was natively playable on Linux shortly after its release) is apparently not a native Linux game now, yet has Vulkan support. Same goes for DOOM Eternal!

MangoHud vsync no longer works after driver update

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Aug 2024 - 12:57am

hi all,

Previously I was using mangohud to enable vsync (vsync=3) for vkd3d in monster hunter world, but ever since updating the nvidia driver from 535 to 550 this is no longer working. Previously I had vsync in the game set to off because mangohud overrode it, but now I have to turn vsync on in the game which isn't ideal because it's obviously not using the mangohud setting any more...

mangohud definitely working - frame limiter settings etc. are working as normal

I've tried mangohud 0.7.1 and 0.7.2

I'm running on mint 22, nothing but the graphics driver has changed.. does anybody have any idea or suggestions? FYI I didn't try the 555 driver (555.58.02) because according to the release dates on the nvidia page it's older than the 550 driver (550.107.02)

thanks

Issues downloading games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Aug 2024 - 12:26am

Hello,

Im quite new to linux, i downloaded ubuntu and am having all sorts of issues downloading games.

I can't get GoG to work, and would also like to get jagex launcher with runelite.

After some googling, it looks like i need some sort of software to make it windows compatible.

Should i just throw in the towel and download windows 10? Or is this as easy as people online are making it seem?

Im not too knowledgable when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks for your help and input in advance!

Has anyone gotten RDR2 under Wayland to work properly?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Aug 2024 - 12:16am

I am having this problem since several months. When I try to run RDR2 on Wayland the GPU utilization never gets close to 100 % and always stays around 75%. On X11 this does not happen and the GPU utilization is around 100 % all the time. Does anyone play RDR2 on Wayland and has the same problem / fixed the problem?

I am using CachyOS + Gnome 46 + Nvidia 560.35.03 with a Rtx 3070.
I tried chaning my distro to Fedora, switching to Plasma, changing the driver version from 550 to 555 to 560, disabling GSP firmware, changing wine versions from 8 to 9 (I am using Bottles with the Soda runner) but with no success. There is also no overheating, no VRR, no VSync, no FPS cap.

WineD3D can still fight

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 11:38pm

I recently did some testing and benchmarking to compare the performance of WineD3D and DXVK while working on optimizing WineD3D for my custom Proton version. I looked into various factors like command stream management, CSMT (Command Stream Multi-Threading), and changing the maximum/preferred OpenGL version.

Using my integrated GPU (since my dedicated one its being repair), I found that there’s only a small difference in performance between the two setups on Dark Souls III:

  • WineD3D with command stream, command serialization, and changing the preferred and max OpenGL version to 4.6
  • DXVK with command stream and command serialization

https://reddit.com/link/1f0gbhg/video/zkvzi0okkokd1/player

This its the only game that i have been able to try this out for now, mainly because after doing those configurations to WineD3D, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly(the other main game i play) refused to open so its looks like it causes some glitches. Understandable, after all its not the default configuration.
For now i will be looking into the wine regedit editing things and looking for info out there
I just wanted to share this :P, maybe WineD3D can improve its performance much more.

Corectrl, is this reading correctly?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 11:34pm

The core control says that I'm using not a lot of power and running cool, while gaming. It seems counterintuitive to the GPU I'm running which is a Vega 64, is there something I need to do to double-check readings?

Is it a good idea to use ext4 on windows?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 10:29pm

I have a dualboot machine but shared games from windows and linux on the same ntfs drive and it broke games from launching on linux. I reformatted it to ext4 and I know there are some programs to allow windows to read and write on ext4 but i wanna be sure i dont corrupt the drive and cause a 3 day headache again of figuring out what i messed up

[TW: WH3] Can Immortal Empires work under the proton version?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 10:00pm

My friend got me to install all of the Total War Warhammer games and I was excited to play, it has a native port and ProtonDB seems to speak very highly of it so I installed them. But I'm afraid the linux port is completely busted, I've tried running it with Linux Runtime like all the other linux ports of games seem to need but to no avail. On top of that during my research I found out that crossplay between Linux and Windows doesn't even work so I'm better off on proton anyway.

However, from my understanding of how proton works since the game is sandboxed in a prefix, would Immortal Empires even work? It needs to see all the other 2 games for it to work and each proton game creates a new prefix specifically for that game.

Issue with Fallout 76 and the cursor leaving the game window.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 9:42pm

I am on a multi monitor setup and I am having an issue where when I get stunned or make any fast movement the cursor will leave the window and start clicking on other things, or when I right click randomly it will click through the game and bring up my desktop menu (I am running openbox).

I have seen that this is not a linux specific issue, there are reports of it happening on windows as well, but I am hoping that there might be linux specific tools that I could use to fix it.

I can't run gamescope, about 6 months ago some patch they made just makes it crash on most games within a minute of the game starting, or have serious performance issues on others. The logs haven't been much help in narrowing down the issue. I would play in fullscreen but proton makes games minimize when focus is lost when playing fullscreen games and I have never been able to find a workaround, I like being able to monitor the game while I am doing random things like changing youtube videos or browsing the wiki, but I can't do that if the game is minimized, so I have to stick with borderless fullscreen.

Warframe

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 24 Aug 2024 - 9:15pm

Hello. Is anyone playing Warframe here? The last time I tried Linux, there were problems with this game. At the start of the game, the Vulkan shader cache was created for a very long time. It lasted more than two hours. I did not wait for the completion. If you run the game without caching shaders, then it lagged a lot. Is it still the same without changes?
