Making a SFF PC for Linux and am in need of advice

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 12:49pm

Hi guys,

I want to daily drive a Linux PC for 90% gaming and 10% productivity work. Willing to wait more for money so I am able to buy better components. I made a list of components and have started buying them. Here it is:

https://preview.redd.it/be75wnx5plef1.png?width=1065&format=png&auto=webp&s=e68c4f540ce1f7d2c36828e25286217fa395b661

I'm looking mostly for 1080p gaming with maxed settings and not necessarily needing ray-tracing or other fancy stuff. Maybe some 1440p. Don't care much about fake FPS.

My main concern would be productivity I'd like to edit with stuff like kdenlive or Davinci Resolve and maybe do some Blender in the future, but AMD GPUs are quite slow compared to nvidia when it comes to productivity, although they play a lot nicer with games.

So is this build alright for productivity? Can I do work in a decent amount of time with a 9060XT or do I need to get, say, a 5060 Ti? I can do some tinkering so I'm alright with that as long as it possible for the software and hardware to get together. I don't need it to be uber-fast, just ok will do.

A youtuber compared these 2 GPUs on Linux here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77LBtP3nZwY

Besides the GPU conundrum, do you guys have other tips for my build?

Thanks

Hello there,

I'm trying to run Lego Star Wars : Skywalker Saga on my Linux Laptop. I got the game via the Epic Games Store and tried to play it via Heroic Games Launcher. It launches into Blackscreen and then just quits.

I'm new to Linux and have no idea what to do.

Thanks in advance

Distribution options for GTX960

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 11:49am

Hello everyone. I have an old desktop with an i5‑4570 and a GTX 960.

I’d like to turn it into a “living‑room PC‑console” with as little tinkering as possible. I no longer have the time to spend on managing installations, updates, etc.

Also, I don’t want to try any Windows 11 hacks since the motherboard doesn’t have TPM. I had considered ChimeraOS, but it only supports AMD GPUs.

What solution or distribution would you all recommend?

Thanks :)

Help Diagnosing Performance Issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 10:04am

System Info:

GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070super

CPU: AMD ryzen 7 5800x

RAM: 24GB

OS: Kubuntu 25.04

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Driver: Nvidia driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-575-open (proprietary, tested)

______________________________

Hello. New to Linux and not great at self diagnosis yet so assitance would be appreciated. I have gone back to play Hitman3 since switching to Linux recently, and I have been getting serious performance issues where I can get ~90-100fps in empty rooms and closets, but go out where there is a crowd or mildly populated room and it plummets to ~40-60fps. I saw benchamrks with comparable hardware as mine gettting consistently better frames than I am at 4k while I am running in 1080p. This isn't even to mention the flickering I get and phantom menu letters that linger translucently on the screen like it got burned into the monitor from time to time. Finally, when I was on my fresh installation of Kubuntu and boot this game for the first time, it would let me turn on the settings for DLSS frame gen and other similar settings, but now it won't let me turn them on. Idk if its a drivers thing, or Heroic thing, but I put my as much helpful info as I could think to put below, and if any other information is necessary I am happy to provide it. Thank you in advance... I am really happy to ditch Windows and going back is not an option, so getting things running properly here would be great.

I have tried a couple different driver versions and have found that switching to windowed can fix the flickering for a while. I have tweaked graphics settings and checked to make sure there are no processes in the background..... is there something obvious I am missing?

Need help with Switch Pro Controller

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 7:18am

Hi there, I have been struggling with this for the past 2-3 hours and me and my best friend ChatGPT couldn't figure out why this kept happening. So I have this switch pro controller that I use to play minecraft with on windows, and I use prism launcher for minecraft and antimicrox to run the controller. The controller on windows works wonderfully due to antimicrox, however on linux it's a completely different story.

I use the latest version of Linux Mint as my distro, and I've installed dkms hid-nintendo and joycond, and joycond is actively running. The controller does connect to my laptop through bluetooth, it shows up in the terminal and in bluetooth devices, however I've tried:

- jstest-gtk
- AntiMicroX
- Qjoypad

and the controller shows up in none of them. I also tried adding the controller in Steam, yet it refuses to show up there as well. Does anyone know how to fix this issue or what else I can do? Thanks!

Intel Arc cards for HDMI 2.1 offload on AMD?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 6:26am

Hi all, after spending years mulling over the lack of HDMI 2.1 support on an AMD card under Linux, I'm getting closer to my wits' end. Even getting over the lack of VRR, I've noticed that native HDMI and different DP->HDMI adapters (Cable Matters, Caldigit) have different/inconsistent HDR behavior too.

I'm wondering if I could solve this by buying an Intel Arc Alchemist card for their reported internal DP-HDMI converters, and plugging my TV into the Arc card instead, using KWIN_DRM_DEVICES... to set up offloading.

I understand there should be a performance penalty due to sending the frames between GPUs, but... would it work? Does anyone have experience doing this with an Alchemist (or even NVIDIA) card? If so, how's VRR? HDR?

Thanks a bunch!

Steam input customizations (gyro, etc.) not active when running non-steam games.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 5:38am

I had this problem, where I would install a GOG game (Cyberpunk) on Heroic launcher, add it to steam and make a Steam input profile using Gyro, but the game would only use standard non customized controller inputs without the gyro.

Couldn't find a solution by Googling earlier so here is what helped in the end:

Inside Heroic, click on game, then three dots in upper right (not the three dashes that also shows up on the game icon) and select 'add to steam'.

Next click the three dashes on the left of the three dots button to open game settings and check 'Disable umu' and add to Game Arguments --launcher-skip

Now launch from steam and steam input profiles should work.

Stubborn display settings in Gnome/Pop_Os crashing my 25 year old game?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 5:29am

Using the up-to-date Pop_Os! with an MSI curved monitor and can't for the life of me get the display settings to hold at their selected values in the settings; the ones required to run this retro game I'm trying to play. I've heard of the display options reverting in Pop being a nagging issue before but I think I'm experiencing the opposite side of this where I'm trying to go retro where my system wants to go optimal.

Issue: I'm trying to play a retro game in Lutris (Risk II from 2000) which is an undertaking even on a Windows setup as it's notoriously hard to run on modern systems. I've narrowed down the problem to the game's rigid 800x600 resolution requirement, however, adjusting the gnome display settings (800x600 with 50 refresh) prior to launch only works when I initially launch the game, then it thinks and reverts to 1920x1080 240 hz, crashing the game. De-selecting "restore resolution on game exit" doesn't make a difference. I've tried just about everything in the Lutris settings, I'm thinking it's down to the OS and hardware/monitor at this point.

Past experience: I've tweaked the display settings on this system before with success. Games like Aliens versus Predator 2 need a 60hz fresh rate cap or else the game and cutscenes play at turbo speed; though with that game, my rig doesn't revert back until I exit the game.

Hardware/OS settings: My monitor is a curved MSI Microstep 32" 240hz connected via displayport to an RX 6800xt. Perhaps the DP connection is over-communicating with the monitor and HMDI will fix that? Disabling the HiDPI daemon doesn't seem to make a difference. In fact, I get the same results launching when the settings are put to 800x600 with <60hz as I do when I launch the default 1080p 240hz.

Prognosis: This is the closest I've gotten this game to run in years. Up until recently, I'd hit play and it would just immediately crash without even starting the launch process. Now it starts, gears up the resolution and then reverts and crashes. If I can get the OS display settings to just follow the settings I select, this game should run, but it keeps auto-reverting to the optimal settings for my monitor.

Is there a way to force the system into maintaining the display settings I selected? Or does anybody have an alternative solution?

Thank you in advance!

Any reason as to why Bazzite lags on Gaming Mode but not on Desktop Mode? And something else.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 2:02am

Let me explain, my cousin, who is new to linux, wanted more performance because certain games didn't get enough FPS in his opinion, so I installed him Bazzite which is just the right one. I went through the setup and allat, booted it up, working fine, installing updates and stuff, but then, when it finishes and the laptop goes to Gaming Mode by default, everything is slow and a bit delayed, but I went to Desktop Mode and suddenly everything's fine somehow 😐. Go back to Gaming Mode, same slowness. Search online as to why but got no results, so I figured y'all could help! The OS also got another problem, we tested Roblox (Sober) at everything max and the cap set to 240 and no problem, the graphics card and everything was in use and working fine, but when I tried Geometry Dash on Gaming Mode, it installed, launched, and the FPS cap should have been around 1000FPS like Windows did, but instead was at 100-400FPS which, I thought, meant that the graphics card wasn't being used, and I'm like what? Cause Roblox is fine but Geometry Dash is not? Tested on other games in the Gaming Mode and same results, the CPU takes everything. And that's kind of a problem for big games, so if anyone could help it would be great!

Best 4k GPU for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 1:41am

Did some research, and I came to the conclusion that for Linux you would want either the RX 9070-XT or the RX 7900-XTX. AMD seems to run close to windows performance (and sometimes every better) with those cards, more so the 7900-XTX. Most videos I found on the 9070-XT were from shortly after their launch, where they were a bit behind windows. I'm not sure if that's improved or not. Maybe as of right now the 9070-XT runs just as close to windows as the 7900-XTX did.

I'm not seriously considering Nvidia because their top tier cards are very expensive. Although the 4090 and 5090 probably do compete well even on Linux, due to their overall better performance than AMD. But I believe on Linux those cards experience quite the drop in performance from Windows, unlike AMD. And if you're talking best bang for your buck, even on Windows I think AMD is considered the better option.

Curious about any opinions on my take here. I've only been researching a little here and there for the past few days. I'm also sure some cheaper AMD cards are also very viable for 4k, will just struggle more with the latest games of course.

I recently upgrading to a Sony Bravia TV that's 4k@120hz. So personally that's why I'm interested in upgrading. My 1080 ti is not handling it well lol. To get 4k@120Hz you apparently need a DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 cable:

https://www.cablematters.com/pc-1398-154-cable-matters-8k-displayport-14-to-hdmi-cable-6ft-18m-with-4k-120hz-8k-60hz-unidirectional-324gbps-display-port-14-to-hdmi-8k-cable-in-black-for-rtx-40804090-rx-78007900-and-more-upc818707024515.aspx?gQT=1

At the moment I only get 60Hz available on my 1080 ti, and I believe it's because I'm using just an HDMI to HDMI cable. I'm also wondering if my CPU is a bottleneck at all too. I have a i7 6700k. If it's not bottlenecking me right now, it for sure will if I do upgrade my GPU.

Linux vs Windows Benchmark Death Stranding

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 12:28am

The fact that Linux can push it over 100 FPS is already impressive.
