Hell let loose on heroic games launcher(epic) keeps randomly crashing with low level fatal error

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 4:52pm

The game runs great, even better than on windows fps wise after the initial map load that gives me 10fps, some random fps drops in the middle of a game that happens on windows as well. I've had some issues getting it to work initially, trying a lot of different GE-proton versions but eventually settling on GE-proton10-10 and using steam runtime

But this random fatal error crash in the middle of a game is honestly ruining it for me, doesn't matter if i'm playing on the same server and same map for 10 minutes or an hour, i'll be immersed and really into it and then just crash and my experience is ruined. sometimes i can play for a long time, with map change and even server change and not have any crash. Once the error window appears the game freezes but i can still hear player communications until it crashes

I have seen some fixes that helped people on windows with this crash related to XMP being enabled and memory in general. I do have XMP enabled because i wouldn't get all the performance i can have with my CPU with XMP disabled, i also have some ram errors on one of my 8gb ram sticks, i'm planning on changing both of them and upgrading to 32gb but i have had zero issue with ram in every other game i'm playing, with some of them being pretty intensive on hardware.

I'm at a loss as to why this single game is giving me so much issues while other games are just fine, maybe it's an easy anti cheat issue? Maybe a heroic games launcher issue? I have no idea

I'll leave my specs and the heroic launcher log in a pastebin link down below if it can help fix this and feel free to ask about any other info that might be relevant but i forgot to provide. Thanks

How to use a PS5 controller with PC games that don't support it?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 2:33pm

Hello guys. I have recently acquired a PS5 controller for my Ubuntu gaming experience. Most games work fine with it with no tinkering (Cyberpunk, God of War, Peak). My emulators also seem to work fine with it, as well.

However, there are some games where it doesn't do anything?

Take LEGO: the Lord of the Rings (2012). This game was obviously meant to be played on a controller. However, with my PS5 controller, it doesn't register any inputs whatsoever? Like why? Which is weird since I remember playing this game on PC with a ps3 controller?

Same thing goes for Dark Souls Remastered. A game obviously meant for controllers. Doesn't register anything.

Why????????

INACT For FFXIV

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 2:27pm

Does anyone use this? I'm currently stuck dual booting Windows atm because I need ACT primarily for auto markers but I'm sick of using Windows. I've tried to get ACT to work in Linux but it's seems to be more pain than I want to endure. Just wondering if this thing is a drop-in replacement for it and works the same/similar way

Xbox controller disconect looping on bluetooth

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 1:39pm

Sorry if this isnt the appropriate place to post this.

When i first pair the controller it appears to be connected but isn't, as the light keeps blinking and the controller doesnt work, if i turn off and on the controller it starts disconnect looping, already tried xpadneo, the only difference it makes is that when pairing for the first time it rumbles, so i assume it is properly installed. Works fine wired.

Are there any benefits from switching from Zorin OS to a 'gaming' distro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 1:29pm

I decided to get in to Linux after Windows 11 kept corrupting my SSD, I was suggested to try out Zorin OS, and I really like all the features, and how simple and modern the UI looks.

BUT, I've been told by some people that I should switch from Zorin before I get too invested, and download a distro like Bazzite or Nobara.

I just want to know if I can expect any significant difference especially when gaming, on any of these distros. I was able to download Steam thru the Software Store very easily, and then I just downloaded my games, checked ProtonDB for the best launch arguments to be using, and it's working flawlessly. I was getting around 50-60 fps on Windows, but on Zorin I have a stable ~100 FPS.

Will switching to a more 'gaming' focused distro improve my experience much if I'm happy with Zorin?

My experience switching my gaming PC from Windows 10 to CachyOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 12:07pm

Hello everyone! Long post about my personal experience switching hardware and moving to Linux.

Last week I upgraded my PC hardware - practically replaced everything GPU, my new system is Ryzen 9800X3D + RX 7700 XT on MSI B850 gaming+wifi mobo.

After about 3 hours of setting up the parts and trying to reach all the cables in the case, I finally boot up windows. I have several issues: sound through HDMI not working, wifi not working, Bluetooth working but my Galaxy buds headphones don't connect, and device manager showing a bunch of undiscovered hardware. I spend one more hour trying various drivers from MSI and AMD, no luck.

At this point I say fuck it and boot up Cachy live usb since I was planning to try it anyway. I am amazed to see everything working out of the box (except connecting to my headphones - which i was able to fix later by using an old usb BT dongle i had) and 10 minutes later i had installed it to my new ssd.

Now to actual gaming, i have tried the first Dishonored and Avowed - no issues so far, I'm just a bit confused with the various wine/proton versions offered by Cachy and Steam and which one i should use.

Just for the history, I was able to get the sound working on Windows by re-installing the GPU drivers (no idea why, since I didn't even change the GPU), but I never got wifi to work or my headphones, even with the usb BT dongle. Can't say that I care much for now since I will be using Linux.

TLDR: I was pleasantly surprised that Linux has much better compatibility than Windows, with both old and new hardware. I love the experience so far!

Battlefield 6 Looks really good, I'm considering dual booting because of it. How should I do? Any tips?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 11:49am

I have switch to linux at the end of the covid-19 lockdown and honestly it has been one of the best decision in my life. I'm really happy that I don't have to deal with MS bullshit anymore. I have distrohop a bit and I honestly didn't miss Windows.

However Battlefield 6 Beta really intregueed me and I am considering having a fallback solution for this game and maybe try Valorant or do some Apex Legends again...

How would you do it? I only have a single GPU so a VM with passthrough is a pain I don't want to deal with. I don't want any Windows shits on my SSD and I am a bit afraid of Windows Boot Manager breaking my grub (happend to me in the past when I was dual booting at first). Would a SATA SSD be enough for BF6? Should I get a second machine?

Dropping Windows for Gaming: Debian, Fedora, or Arch?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 9:26am

Hey folks,

I’ve been around Linux for quite a while. I started with Ubuntu 8.04, then during my dev studies I played around with FreeBSD and Fedora. For work reasons (C#/.NET Fx dev…) I had to stick with Windows for years, but for the past ~2 years I’ve been able to use Debian at my job (dotnet 6+ <3).

Now I’m finally ready to drop Windows completely as part of my personal “de-GAFAM-ization” and I’d like to set up my gaming rig on Linux. The simplicity and success of SteamOS really helped me make the leap.

My setup (simplified):

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super

I tried distrochooser.de and it suggested Debian first, then Arch. But it also mentioned that Debian’s package versions might not always be up-to-date enough for gaming, which made me hesitate.

So here’s my question: which distro would you recommend for gaming on this hardware? Stick with Debian, jump to Fedora, or go full Arch? How do you usually decide what’s best when balancing stability vs. bleeding-edge for gaming?

Thanks for any advice!

What DE's and Compositors Are (Or Have) Implemented HDR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Sep 2025 - 8:13am

So to my knowledge the big ones that already have it are Plasma and Gnome, hyprland has it but had some issues with it, and swaywm has it but i simply cannot get it to work with my monitor. Is there any new DE's/WMs looking to add it, besides cosmic?
