How long does it usually take for features like Redstone to reach Mesa drivers?
I'm new to gaming in Linux, so I’ve never payed attention to it.
I assume I can already use the Redstone FG via optiscaler(?), at least I’ve read about that working on Windows. Though it would be much more convenient to just get it to work via a launch command.
So is that usually a thing of weeks, months, or completely unpredictable?

PSA: My BT Headphones Sound Better on Linux, why??
TL;DR: because of SBC-XQ Bluetooth codec.
I'm not going to say anything really new, but recent discussions showed many people aren't aware of this difference compared to other systems, so I figured mentioning wouldn't hurt at least. Feel free to skip if you read the TL;DR and figured "Ah yeah, I know".
So, Bluetooth headphones support so called A2DP profile, which stops sending microphone audio and uses full bandwidth to try to improve audio quality.
Now, audio being sent in A2DP needs to be encoded with such a codec that is supported by headphones. The only codec your headphones are guaranteed to support is SBC (it is required by A2DP specification). The problem is, audio quality in SBC sucks.
So manufacturers sometimes add their own codecs on top, like AptX, AAC, LDAC, etc — all of varying quality. But nothing is perfect, so that solution has its own problems as well! More specifically: depending on a codec manufacturers have to pay a fee for using it in their headphones. So BT headphones/speakers ecosystem ends up with a whole zoo of different codecs and of varying quality.
Now, enter SBC-XQ. Back in 2019 a user ValdikSS found a neat hack that allowed to improve sound quality of headphones, given only support for SBC. There's a separate article that compares SBC-XQ to popular codecs for anyone interested. But I'll note that SBC-XQ sounds at least as good and maybe even better than AptX HD!
I can't emphasize enough how monumental this finding was: just imagine — every bluetooth headphone or speaker you have gets automagic audio quality boost! That is because SBC-XQ is based on SBC, which as mentioned is mandatory. So you could have very cheap headphones that only ever supported SBC and sounded terribly, and then you just switch them to SBC-XQ and — voilà — you get sound quality of more expensive ones!
SBC-XQ was added since to various Android forks, to PipeWire and to older PulseAudio.
If I am reading PipeWire 0.3.34 release notes correctly, SBC-XQ should be used by default, unless it's disabled by quirks (because some headphone models may have problems with this "neat hack", but most should work just fine).
So, if you have Bluetooth headphones or speakers that always sounded terribly on Mac OS or Windows (neither of which to this day have implemented support for SBC-XQ), give them a second chance! Try choosing SBC-XQ profile in audio settings, maybe that will give them a new life!

KCD2 visual bug after latest Nobara update
Played the game for 60+ hours, but after recent Nobara update, the started looking like this. 3D models and 3D UI elements have a black texture or shader issue, making large parts of the game not usable.
Tried switching to GE-Proton 10-25 which worked before, but it did not help. If someone has a guide how to delete proton/wine files and change versions, I would appreciate it
Nobara 43, Steam version of the game, running with GE-Proton Latest and using Wayland HDR.
Kernel: 6.17.12-200.nobara.fc43.x86_64
GPU: AMD 9070XT
Steam game launch commands: PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command% -devmode -keybinder +exec user.cfg

Does anyone elses CachyOS (Linux) Darktide crash a lot?
Silent Hill f weird textures.
How do I fix this? I've tried simply adding -dx12 to lutris arguments (resulted in a window saying it's not supported), I've tried using proton-ge I downloaded using ProtonUp-Qt (idk if lutris was using proton experimental or proton-ge when launching the game), I've changed wine configuration to windows 10 as it worked for someone a month ago and all of that was to no avail. Idk what to do.

Can't decide between GNOME and KDE
The thing is I'm kinda super undecided between the two. There are things I love about GNOME and things that worry me about it. And there are things about KDE I love and things that I don't like about it. My use case is programming, internet browsing, AWS and gaming.
GNOME pros:
- love its workflow. Its super key is perfect
- love its icons and style
- love how it has a GNOME app for almost anything
- like the security of it having corporate backing
GNOME cons:
- I think it's missing some basic features like a proper systray. I know there are extensions but I do not want to rely on them
- I think it lags behind KDE in some gaming features such as VRR support and all those other features that might come in the future.
- it has some visual things that have bothered me such as for example all Steam games have their icons missing. Check this issue: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/4100#note\_2441150. Do you think they'll eventually solve it? Idk the attitude the devs seem to show here.
- there's a general attitude in GNOME that I think they're always thinking their way is the right way and they try to blindly lead. I don't care about this when it comes to workflow because I mostly agree with their workflow, but it worries me when it comes to following industry standards and maintaining a healthy DE. Take a look at the responses here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/8805
- I also don't love that all the tiling they support is basically tile to the right or to the left half of the screen
KDE pros:
- faster pace of trying new things than GNOME, like Wayland shit and VRR etc
- better fractional scaling?
- much more "grassroots" and community funding I think?
- I also feel as if KDE is getting more corporate backing and corporate collaboration than GNOME. Stuff with Valve and the likes. Can you provide me a full list of all corporations backing each DE with how much money and how this will look like (try to predict) in 15 years? I basically don't wanna use a DE that goes their own way without corporate backing, money is essential to run any big FOSS project.
- I think it's better for gaming?
KDE cons:
- uglier than GNOME
- my ideal workflow has dynamic workspaces and it should be as easy as possible to switch between them and launch apps in them etc. GNOME is way better at this with its Super key and Super+Scroll. Plasma has Alt+Super+Scroll hard-coded. Then you have separate Grid view and overviews launched with more complex shortcuts and you can't really scroll virtual desktops there not launch applications from there. You also don't have dynamic virtual desktops as an official feature.
- I'm afraid that feature creep makes the devs less efficient with their resources
Man I really can't decide. I just need to make a final choice. What do tou guys think?

Minecraft bedrock launcher won't let me play realms
I was using Minecraft bedrock launcher to play realms with my friends normally for about a week or two. then all of a suddenly after an update and it just tells me my client is out of date (error code "chain") I updated the launcher I changed the game version to the newest one, I even went into dev mode to change to the newest version but it ended up crashing before the game loaded.

Blocky lighting artifacts in all games
Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing blocky lighting artifacts in almost every game.
I’m running CachyOS with an NVIDIA GPU. I’ve already tested different Proton versions and even downgraded the NVIDIA driver, but the issue persists.
Any ideas on what might be causing this or how to fix it?

Linux-exclusive launches
Linux gamers generally get:
- Ports after Windows
- Compatibility layers (Wine/Proton)
- Indie goodwill rather than strategic investment
What if we can shift Linux from an after-thought to first?
Linux-first timed exclusivity
- Linux gets the game first
- Windows follows later (e.g. 3–12 months)
Do you know of any examples where this has happened in the past?
Any companies we could encourage to follow this strategy?

How to install .net 10 (or any version or any dependency) with ProtonTricks or WineZGUI
The tutorial - A three step process (two if you have ProtonTricks installed already)
This short tutorial is from someone who finally after many hours over many months figured out the 4 second solution that no one has ever mentioned on the internet for idiots such as myself
1. What to download:
Download the thing you need to install, so for KSA, it requires .net 10, I literally just download the thing I'd have downloaded to install it for windows from the official site
Download ProtonTricks or WineZGUI (they're basically the same, but I'll go through it with ProtonTricks for this because I did 5 minutes ago, I'd download it through Discover or Bazzar if you're on Bazzite)
2. How to install it (this is the last step and after you can run the game):
Open ProtonTricks
Select the game or non-Steam shortcut from the menu
Select "Select the default wineprefix" option and click "OK" in the bottom right
Select "Run an arbitrary executable (.exe/.msi/.msu)" and click "OK" again
Navigate to the thing you downloaded earlier, so for me it's the .net installer I got from Microsoft, then click "OK" at the bottom right
Now you install it like you would with a normal Windows program and you're done, play whatever
Some rambling rubbish:
I am an I.T. support person professionally and have been for a little while and I am struggling so much with this stuff man, some stuff in Linux is way easier than Windows, by a lot, but most of the easy stuff is such a nightmare to figure out, it's not harder by much like installing .net stuff or other dependencies, it's really easy to do for any program I'd like, the problem is that it's been like 5 months since I switched and I only just figured out that I can install any dependency like I would on Windows using WineZGUI or ProtonTricks, this isn't the first time I've tried to figure it out, and no one has ever said what I'm saying in this, which is why I'm saying it. It's ridiculously easy to install this stuff once you know but it's so hard to find out. And yea I get it probably says this stuff in the Wiki, but I've spent hours going through official resources for lots of things and never been able to find it so I just don't bother anymore, you'd think if there's an easy way to install something it'll come up in Google when some moron such as myself asks the stupid questions, but no one is asking the stupid questions and getting good answers with this Linux stuff for some reason, so I'll do my best to be the stupid person asking the stupid questions and the guy giving the easy answers

Confused how to get fsr4 working on Clair Obscur
I'm running PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %command% in my launch arguments for the game since it got patched yesterday but the image still seems like it's not FSR4.
Running a 9070xt on CachyOS.. any tips?
not sure if worth mentioning but also can't get HDR working in any game that supports it, using KDE with HDR enabled in display settings and tried every launch option possible and still nothing

question about proton [Mint distro]
Heya, for some context, i just switched into Mint Linux and i am having a good time so far.
I have installed steam, and noticed that Sonic Mania wasn't running. I'd press "play", the game would open and immediately close, without any error messages.
So for fun i decided to see if i could somehow run it, and after some hours i actually succeeded, what i did essentially was follow this steam page post
https://steamcommunity.com/app/246900/discussions/1/2935742047961340411/
In short
> opt in on beta updates
> force the game to run an older version of proton (Proton 4.11-13)
and it worked just fine
My question is: Why did it work with an older version of proton?
I tried Proton Experimental, and also the newest version of proton i could find (proton 10.0-3) and it only worked with an older version...
I don't think it was necessarily because my account was opting out of beta changes, since after opting in, i actually tried running proton 10.0-3 and it still didn't work.
Is there an actual explanation for this phenomenon?
Since i'm still learning about Linux, this question is purely out of curiosity

Fedora 43 Struggles
Hey everyone, switching over to fedora 43 from windows 11 and I’m having some issues. I thought I’d start here since they’re gaming specific, but let me know if a fedora subreddit would be a better place to ask!
My laptop has integrated graphics and a 5070ti. I’m struggling to get UE5 games running on steam without customizing the command. It seems to break every day. I switched to x11 and it just works. Is this a fine fix or is there something else going on that I should look at?
I cannot get my 8bitdo ultimate 2 controller working. I’ve tried Bluetooth and with the 2.4ghz dongle. With Bluetooth, steam recognizes it and under controller settings I can see all the buttons work. In game, it’s not detected. With the dongle, fedora sees it but steam doesn’t. I deleted it from Bluetooth too in case it was causing an issue there, no luck. I know wireless is faster, but I’d rather use Bluetooth if possible. I’ve tried messing with all the controller settings, holding B while turning on the controller, etc., no luck.
Any ideas? Also, any general tips would be helpful. I’m a software engineer so I’m fine with Linux as an OS, but I’ve never gamed on it 😳.
