Why Arch Linux became my go-to for gaming , and why I’ll never look back

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 3:02am

After hopping through a bunch of distros, I finally committed to Arch for gaming and honestly, it’s been a game changer. The rolling updates keep my system bleeding edge without the bloat or unnecessary apps. Plus, the Arch Wiki is insanely helpful when troubleshooting or tweaking performance.

Gaming performance on my 7800 XT has been rock solid, and the flexibility means I can customize everything to my exact needs. Sure, it’s not for everyone, but if you’re willing to put in a bit of effort, the payoff is worth it.

Anyone else here prefer Arch for gaming? What’s your favorite tip or tweak for it?

Gamescope not working with Optimus on my laptop only works when NVIDIA is set in BIOS and it works great on my surprisingly

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 1:02am

I'm having a problem with Gamescope on my laptop (Acer Nitro AN16-41, Arch Linux, KDE Plasma on Wayland).

I have both an AMD integrated GPU Radeon 760M and an NVIDIA discrete GPU RTX 4050. My laptop supports hybrid graphics Optimus.

When BIOS is set to "Hybrid" mode (both GPUs), Gamescope does not work at all. It just crashes or shows a black screen.

But if I go into BIOS and set GPU mode to "dGPU only" NVIDIA only, Gamescope works fine.

I already tried using prime-run, envycontrol, and launching with --prefer-vk-device, but nothing works in Optimus. Only switching BIOS to NVIDIA-only makes it run.

I'm wondering if there is a fix on how i can use gamescope in Optimus.

OS: Arch Linux x86_64 Host: Nitro AN16-41 Kernel: Linux 6.14.7 DE: KDE Plasma 6.3.5 (Wayland) GPU 1: AMD Radeon 760M GPU 2: NVIDIA RTX 4050 Mobile gamescope version 3.16.9+ (gcc 15.1.1) submitted by /u/UnpaidLandlord_9669

What Linux compatible MMORPG takes up the least storage size?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 12:44am

Im a causal gamer and i do enjoy a good online game sometime, i just hate how big the file size is sometimes, I prefer 3d mmorpgs but please feel free to suggest any 2d ones aswell, I feel like realm of the mad god might be a ok choice, feel free to widen my gamer mind selection.

I grew up on windows where everything was a simple .exe file.

Im looking for mmorpg game suggestions that are not too complex to learn but dont take up much space.

New Nvidia "New Feature Branch" driver 575.57.08 released

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 10:10pm

Edit: You Blackwell users, feel free to report how the new "Smooth Motion" feature (FAQ Link) works out for you. :-)

Source: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/245537/

Note: DO NOT install the driver from there unless you are comfortable and proficient enough to manually install drivers. Better to wait for your distro to update their repos or use a ppa like this one (https://launchpad.net/\~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) to eventually receive the most recent drivers for your Nvidia card, even if this causes a slight delay in availability.

Changelog:

Highlights since R575 Beta Release, 575.51.02

Fixed a bug that led to increasing memory usage in X11 OpenGL and Vulkan applications after suspend/resume cycles.

Fixed a bug that could cause OpenGL applications and compositors to stall when using NVIDIA as a PRIME Display Offload sink ("Reverse PRIME"), potentially resulting in a black screen.

Highlights from R575 Beta Release, 575.51.02

Extended the __NV_DISABLE_EXPLICIT_SYNC environment variable, which was available to EGL applications, to also apply to GLX and Vulkan applications.

Fixed a bug that could cause Marvel Rivals to crash on startup or when loading levels.

Fixed a bug that could cause the applications that use the VK_KHR_present_wait extension to hang on Wayland.

Added support for GLX front buffer rendering on Xwayland.

Fixed a bug that could cause Minecraft to crash on Xwayland.

Fixed a bug that prevented PRIME Render Offload from working correctly when using NVIDIA GPUs as both the render offload source and the render offload sink.

Fixed a bug which prevented VRR from working when overriding an EDID through the /sys/kernel/debug/dri/*/edid_override interface.

Added support for the DRM plane properties COLOR_ENCODING and COLOR_RANGE.

Fixed a bug that prevented the Default TGP and Max TGP values from being reported in the nvidia-settings control panel while running notebook systems on battery power.

Fixed a bug that could lead to display freezes on some systems when toggling Night Mode with GNOME on Wayland.

Fixed a bug that could cause graphics applications to not render correctly after a system suspend/resume cycle, if using the nvidia.ko kernel module parameter NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1.

Added a new kernel module parameter, 'conceal_vrr_caps', to the nvidia-modeset kernel module. This parameter may be used to enable usage of features on some displays such as ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur) which are incompatible with VRR. See the "Direct Rendering Manager Kernel Modesetting" (DRM KMS) chapter of the README for further information.

Added support for NVIDIA Smooth Motion. See the "NVIDIA Smooth Motion" chapter in the README for details.

Extended the nvidia-powerd daemon to also support Dynamic Boost while a notebook is running on battery power. See the "Dynamic Boost on Linux" chapter in the README for details.

Updated the nvidia-modeset driver to trim trailing whitespace from the product name passed to the GPU's audio device as part of the EDID-Like Data (ELD).

Dropped support for NV_PLANE_BLEND_CTM, NV_PLANE_DEGAMMA_TF, NV_PLANE_DEGAMMA_LUT, NV_PLANE_DEGAMMA_LUT_SIZE, and NV_PLANE_DEGAMMA_MULTIPLIER DRM plane properties on Linux kernels earlier than 6.8 to avoid exceeding DRM_OBJECT_MAX_PROPERTY.

Fixed an issue that could cause render-offloaded applications using KDE Frameworks 6 to crash.

Non-Native Steam Games Close Immediately After Starting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 9:52pm

As the title says, any game that isn't native/using proton just immediately stops after starting. Doesn't even show the pop up for Vulkan shaders. Nothing. I've been having this problem with Arch and Fedora Workstation (both with gnome). I'm honestly at my wits end, I'm not sure what to do. I've never had this issue on any Linux distro before, or if I have had this issue it's as easy as switching to experimental or 9.0 but not even that works. Above is me testing with Ultrakill but every other game leads to the same result.

"linux gets better performance" OK what magic word do I need to actually make that happen?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 9:39pm

I just installed fedora+KDE and noticed my FPS was really bad on CS2. I went on a private match on de_dust2 on windows and linux to test. I added the vulkan launch option on windows to make sure I was testing windows vs Linux and not just dirextx vs vulkan. on Linux I got around 200 FPS average with peaks of 230. on windows I got 400 FPS with peaks of 500. I was running with no up-scaling and low settings. my maximum frame rate was unlimited on both. I have a radeon rx 7900XT and a ryzen 9 5900x with 30 gigs of ddr4 ram.

Struggling to get HDR working on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 8:49pm

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to get HDR working properly on Linux but running into a wall.

  • I'm on Kubuntu 25.04 with Plasma 6.3
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4080 with driver version 570
  • My monitor supports HDR (shows "HDR: ON" in the OSD), and it's enabled
  • Tried both Gamescope and VK_HDR_LAYER, neither seem to make a difference
  • Vulkan info doesn't show HDR-related EOTF or ST2084 extensions
  • Whenever I launch games through Gamescope with gamescope -- %command%, the game refuses to launch
  • Planning to play Cyberpunk 2077, Spider-Man 2, and other HDR-heavy titles

Anyone else managed to get HDR working reliably with this kind of setup? Appreciate any help or working configs. Thanks!

Should I make the switch? New AM5 build today

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 8:25pm

I've been a long time user of Windows and been gaming since I was a kid and I've never been able to daily drive Linux because of VR and some other music notation programs rarely ever having drivers that are specifically made for them on Linux. I don't really need as many of those programs these days and I'm getting new Hardware today, 9800x3d, 32gb RAM and an x870 mobo along with the 4080 I already had.

Since I have to do a clean install of Windows with the new motherboard anyway I'm wondering if it's worth trying a Linux distro out as my daily driver? I've heard that Proton has gotten a lot better with windows programs and steamvr, but anticheat on games as well as the SteamVR/index drivers weren't so good. I've done some research reading other posts here about it but instead of windows LTSC with debloat software what Linux distro should I try out for a high end rig? Endeavor and Drauger looked pretty good honestly but I would like to spend a bit less time on the terminal and more time actually using the OS.

Thanks in advance!

Serious Sam for Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 8:07pm

I used to play Serious Sam a lot on my Winnie box, but I'm now back where I belong with Mint Mate. I understand there are ways to play it on Mint. I don't have any experience with setting this up, but I found these pages.

https://snapcraft.io/serioussam

https://flathub.org/apps/io.itch.tx00100xt.SeriousSamClassic

But I don't know how to deal with the original winnie version in Linux. That's where I am stuck. Any help would be appreciated. At the moron level would be best.

Been having XInput issues with mouse drift and HitBox Ultra PS5 mode not working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 May 2025 - 8:07pm

I would like to fix both of the issues I'm having, but at least getting one to work properly would be amazing. I play in tournaments on PS5(which I don't have) and would keep the HitBox in that mode since there's no drifting problems and I can at least make sure the firmware is working with a current build of the game, or not having mouse drift. I guess either way I have to test on my friends PS5 before an event.

System info:

OS: Linux Mint 22 x86_64 Kernel: 6.8.0-59-generic Uptime: 2 days, 18 hours, 33 mins Packages: 3522 (dpkg), 44 (flatpak) Shell: bash 5.2.21 Resolution: 2560x1440, 2560x1440 DE: Xfce 4.18 WM: Xfwm4 WM Theme: Mint-Y-Dark-Aqua Theme: Mint-L-Darker-Teal [GTK2], Breeze [GTK3] Icons: Mint-Y-Sand [GTK2], Mint-Y-Yaru [GTK3] Terminal: xfce4-terminal Terminal Font: Liberation Mono 16 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (16) @ 3.800GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Memory: 5701MiB / 31999MiB

XInput issues: I've had this issue for a while, will try to fix it, deal with it, try again, repeat. I'll try to remember everything I've tried, but it's been over a year dealing with it.

Whenever I press R2 on any 360/xinput controller, the mouse will drift up(very rare occasion will it not do this) and have to disconnect my controller to stop it. Plug it back in and it's fine until I press R2 again. This only happens on this machine, not on Steam Deck or Windows 10. Steam running or not and wired/wireless both effected. Going into jstest, the axis reads normal, but after pressing R2 will permanently read as half pressed when not used. I have run calibration on the buttons which will fix it until I plug it back in for the next session, not ideal. Tried different ports, controllers, cables. (If I remember correctly) using an adapter such as the Brooke FGC works fine.

I've tried a few different drivers and forks e.g. xpad_noone, xpad, xone, etc. currently using joystick. un/reinstalled all to test. I have not seen any errors in dmesg or xorg logs so there's no clues where to go. Searching for this issue mostly comes up with stick drift. I am at a loss where to go from here with the lack of any errors anywhere.

HitBox Ultra PS5 mode issues: This only seems to happen with the hitbox. I have three other leverless controllers that have PS5 mode and they work fine using the GP2040-CE chip.

Recognized as connected under lsusb as Bus 007 Device 050: ID 054c:0ce6 Sony Corp. DualSense wireless controller (PS5). In /dev/input/ it's coming up as an event. jstest and Steam (Steam Deck as well) do not recognize anything connected. Controller firmware is up to date and works on Windows 10 and PS5.

dmesg output:

[244026.511319] usb 7-4: Manufacturer: Sony Interactive Entertainment [244026.671573] playstation 0003:054C:0CE6.0013: hidraw10: USB HID v1.11 Gamepad [Sony Interactive Entertainment DualSense Wireless Controller] on usb-0000:0c:00.3-4/input3 [244032.146674] playstation 0003:054C:0CE6.0013: Failed to retrieve feature with reportID 9: -110 [244032.146679] playstation 0003:054C:0CE6.0013: Failed to retrieve DualSense pairing info: -110 [244032.146682] playstation 0003:054C:0CE6.0013: Failed to get MAC address from DualSense [244032.146684] playstation 0003:054C:0CE6.0013: Failed to create dualsense. Any insight would be great. I should have prepared more for this post as I have done a lot trying to fix these, but having a hard time remembering the exact details, config changes, etc.
