GE-PROTON-10.3 and games launched on 2nd screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 8:43am

Howdy,

I do not know why, but when I'm launching games on GE-Proton 10.3, games from Steam are launching on my 2nd screen with smaller refresh ratio. I would like to change it, because a lot of games are locked on 75Hz from 2nd screen - even when I move them to 144Hz screen. On GE-Proton 9.27 everything works just fine.

I'm using Manjaro with Gnome.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (32) @ 3.400GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (NVIDIA-SMI 575.57.08)

Memory: 48099MiB

Ubuntu 25.04 gaming help

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 8:31am

Hi all,

specs: Intel 285k Asrock Z890i Nova itx XFX 9070 XT Mercury Magnetic G.Skill cudimm 8400mhz ddr5 2 x 24gb 2 x Samsung 990 Pro 1tb Corsair SF1000 psu cpu is custom watercooled and using RAM cooler.

So i installed Ubuntu 25.04 with latest kernel 6.14 and latest mesa. Elden ring is very smooth and snappy even better then on Windows 11 However Cyberpunk 2077 its meh...i get 120fps but feels and looks as if its 30 fps...On my windows 11 it feels smooth as butter when playing CP2077.

Asked chatgpt for help and we tried some settings with minor improvements i can play but its not smooth even if i get 120fps. Chatgpt said better not install official amd driver due to bugs and instability and no full support yet on 25.04. Also CP2077 has lower fps with same settings as on w11 i would say a reduction of around 30% on Ubuntu 25.04.....bummer....

What may be the cause of this..or is it that some games run better on linux while others run slower compared to windows?

Or does some one know how to improve or fix this with CP2077 on Ubuntu 25.04? Any suggestions is welcome. Thx.

i'm impressed

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 5:49am

I must admit that linux impressed me this time. Every other encounter that i had with linux was terrible for gaming. Now i tried DBD, Elden Ring and Elden Ring Nightreign and everything works flawlessly. Maybe that change comes from me stopping playing fortnite and lol

Does anyone know what this Lutris error is and how to fix it, for an absolute beginner?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 5:37am

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04.02, and I installed the newest version of Wine as well as Lutris 0.5.18, and attempted to download the EA app via Add Game > EA App (2022, Windows), and clicked through the prompts it gave me, only to be given this error message at the end with no other option but "Abort."

I first got the error when I was accidentally using 0.5.17, and I repaired that by uninstalling and replacing with the newest version. I tried redoing it several times, including once by uploading the EA app installer .exe file when prompted, but nothing worked. Google has no good answers for me. I've seen that maybe it's because my account doesn't have the permissions to do this, but how would I get them?

Thanks in advance.

Linux B580 great news

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 3:40am

So i tested a bunch of distros for gaming and almost all of them were dissapointing bazzite did not run dx12 games out of the box and after some tinkiring there glitches or graphical bugs like in doom eternal white dots everywhere,I tried catchy os but i am not well versed in linux and could not get sunshine to install properly and for some reasone it had the same issue as bazzite,Then finaly i gave Nobara a try and after just doing a system update and setting the graphic drivers to the latest build in the GUI everything ia running flawlessly dx12 games no issue high fps just like in windows sunshine is running good and the system feels snapy and responsive bern using it for over a month now with no issues. So i am happy to report that linux gaming on the b580 is now very viable under Nobara ,Sorry for the long post :D

Steam constantly opening and closing.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 3:05am

I'm on Arch using Hyprland on latest proprietory nvidia drivers.

I've tried both native and flatpak versions and I still can't get it to work. When opening steam there's a black window the size of the login window which then disappears and appears again.

This is the log:

Had a big struggle today just trying to do a basic FPS limiter. Is there something I'm missing?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 1:34am

I'm playing a Steam game on Proton , its a game from like 2002. Nosferatu:Wrath of Malachi

It runs at thousands of FPS, completely breaking the physics and gameplay.
My first thought was to try Mangohud, but nothing I did would get it to take effect.

Then I tried Gamescope, but the game would just crash using it.

Then I tried Libstrangle, but Libstrangle doesn't work with proton.

I tried a bunch of Proton launch commands like

vblank_mode=1 %command%
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 vblank_mode=1 %command%
__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=1 %command%

Nothing works
How does Steam Deck do it so effectively? How can I simply limit this game to 60fps!?

Controllers

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 1:30am

Hey all,

I'm primarily a keyboard and mouse gamer but some games feel better on a controller (like E33, [Souls games, etc).

I'm currently rocking an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, and I have had it for years now, and it's showing its age. I use it with the dongle instead of BT since BT on it doesn't feel great. I've been trying to research and find a new controller I'd like.

I've gifted 8bitdo controllers to friends and family and I really don't like how they feel even though they work on Linux effortlessly. One thing I do like about the 8bitdo ultimate wireless is that the dongle hides in the dock.

I've looked at Vader and various other brands. Someone even suggested a dualsense edge controller, but they don't have hall effect (but the sticks can be fully replaced if they break or start drifting).

Could I get advice on any nice feeling/weighty controller that works well on Linux and that is preferably wireless?

*Linux testers needed*! We've just uploaded our space sim "Junkyard Space Agency" to itch.io for free, but have almost no idea on how the game runs on Linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 May 2025 - 1:14am

If you're into space-sims, please give it a try!
Write a comment with your CPU+GPU combo, distro and what was your general experience. We're especially interested to know how it runs on laptops and iGPUs.

DLSS and frame gen broken for nvidia?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 11:31pm

I tried out marvel rivals on my friends computer, he has a Ryzen 5700x and a Radeon RX 6800.

I have a Ryzen 7600 and a RTX 4070.

Both of us are running Fedora 42. I turn on DLSS and Frame generation, I get maybe 100 - 110 fps.

On his computer turning on FSR3 and Frame generation and he gets anywhere from 150 - 200 fps.

Both of us playing on a 2560x1440 180Hz monitor.

Both of us are running wayland.

Is DLSS and frame gen broken? Are Nvidia cards that badly handicapped in linux vs windows?

I'm seriously thinking about selling my 4070 and buying some kind of AMD card.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

From what I saw the 6800 non XT is supposed to be around 30% slower than a 4070.

Gaming on Linux is a nightmare

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 10:43pm

It all started when Assassin's Creed Shadows started stuttering on Windows and I saw that people were saying that they get more stable performance on Linux, so I started researching.

I already have a Proxmox and an Ubuntu server, so I thought of trying something new. In the end, I decided to go with EndeavorOS. The installation was a breeze and I loved the UI. Then came installing Steam. Installed the official package. Steam ran and everything was fine. Before I got rid of Windows, I backed everything up with Veeam and put my Steam library on a different SSD so that I could easily import that library later. So I imported the library, enabled Proton Experimental, and tried to start the game... Nothing. After 2 seconds, the game just decided to quit. Tried Proton debugging to get some logs, but it never generated a log anywhere on the system. I was lost. Everything was updated and should've worked.

After a day of troubleshooting, I gave up and thought that the issue was on my part and that I should switch to something that I'm familiar with, so I tried Pop!_OS. Went basically the same there. Installed without problems, started up Steam, imported Steam library, started AC Shadows and the same behavior. Looked at ProtonDB and tried everything there, plus combinations of things. Finally, after some time, I thought of moving the game from the original SSD to the main drive, and that with some special startup options finally let Ubisoft Connect launch at least, but with a caveat: the Ubisoft sign-in window was just a black box. After some searching, some people said to exclude a certain DLL, so I did that with the startup options in Steam. That finally gave me a working sign-in window. After signing in, the artwork before the launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows appeared. I became hopeful that finally I got the game working... I waited... And waited... After 15 minutes, nothing happened, and I decided to close the game and do some more troubleshooting. I again looked at ProtonDB and tried every configuration that people have recommended and did everything that they did to make their games start.

Two days went by of just constant troubleshooting and while I was on Discord and tried to start the game, my whole screen went dark and my GPU stopped outputting video. That was my final straw. Installed a fresh Windows 11 instance, imported the library, pressed start and the game just worked. And before anyone says it, I know that there probably is some obscure way to make it run, but that's not the bloody point.

My system: Ryzen 9 9900X RX 9070XT 64GB DDR5 1TB Samsung 970 for system 2TB Samsung 980 for data/games

TL;DR: After AC Shadows stuttered on Windows, I tried running it on Linux (EndeavorOS, then Pop!_OS) for better performance. Despite being familiar with Linux, I spent over 3 days troubleshooting non-starting issues, black screens with Ubisoft Connect, and eventually a GPU crash. Tried everything on ProtonDB/Reddit/Steam forums. Game worked instantly on a fresh Windows 11 install. The amount of effort for a "maybe" isn't worth it.

8bitdo + Xbox controller unconfigured at each startup

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 May 2025 - 10:37pm

Hi,

I have a new Xbox controller and I bought an 8bitdo dongle to connect it with Ubuntu.

At first it did not work, but connecting it in Windows and then configuring it in Ubuntu, it appears correctly.

The problem comes when I turned off the computer, the next boot, I turn on the controller and it connects correctly but the applications do not detect it.

I have not installed any 8bitdo software on Linux because I have not found it on his website.

Anyone with the same problem?

Regards
