Steam won't run unless firewall is off

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 4:07pm

Hi, I've maid a post here two months ago, but it died out and I couldn't fix the issue. Basically, I'm using Fedora 42 idea spin (issue was already present in 41) and steam won't open unless I run sudo systemctl stop firewalld Only this window appears, though the icon still appears on system tray. I've tried opening ports and making rich rules but none of that worked (it is possible I did that wrong, though I wouldn't know). I've done multiple reinstalls and even tried the flatpak version. I am really stumped. Here's a link to my other post so you could see what I have tried previously. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1jp1iw6/steam_does_not_open_fedora_41_kde_spin/ Also sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile.

CM icons broken Assetto Corsa LM22

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 2:35pm

Was following a tutorial on youtube for installing CM on linux but ended up with this. Someone else had a similar issue a week ago but no one responded to that post. I read something about color profiles but that seems stupid and isn't likely to work on linux.

Diablo 4, The very best settings that you have found on SteamDeck ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 2:35pm

Hi

So I am tinkering with Diablo 4 settings to find the "best" settings for the game that gives me high framerate

What I am talking about is lowering down settings that is either way to heavy and or unnoticeable on a small screen like the deck

Also considering like, you know, what massive changes is there in framerate from high to ultra compared to the visual fidelity you get... of course the deck cannot get to high OR ultra but the same thinking going from low to medium... like is it worth it ?

My absolutely minimum framerate is 45 and I have have got this with my own settings while using FSR2 quality and with a lot of mops and effects

I am also using ProtonGE 10.4

I have noticed some stuttering... is there any launch options I need to set ?

ok that is it

thanks

Should I switch from Windows 11 to Linux for gaming, despite having an NVIDIA GPU?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 2:35pm

Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about switching from Windows 11 to a Linux-based gaming distro like Nobara.

However my main concern is that I'm running an NVIDIA GPU and based on benchmarks that I've seen AMD cards generally offer better support and performance on Linux

Here are some quick specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4080S
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz
  • Monitor: 1440p 170Hz
  • Games I play: Everything from Triple A story driven Games to Competitive Online Games (CS, Rivals,...)

My questions are:

  1. How much of a performance hit should I realistically expect when switching to Linux with an NVIDIA card compared to staying on Windows 11?
  2. Is the experience stable and polished enough for daily gaming with NVIDIA drivers (proprietary or open)?
  3. Are there any specific tweaks or tools on Linux that help mitigate NVIDIA-related issues?

I'm already using Linux for my Uni laptop so I'm already comfortable when it comes to Linux I'm asking this purely out of a Performance concern

Minecraft Launcher not opening via Linux on Chromebook?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 2:25pm

I bought a chromebook back in December and set up Linux so I could play Minecraft. Went through all the steps in this tutorial and it was working fine. I set up Linux, enabled Crostini GPU, etc. Now months later, I tried opening the launcher but the icon stays loading forever and never opens. Then I tried uninstalling the launcher but that wasn't working either. I couldn't find a reason why it was no longer working, so I ended up powerwashing my chromebook and starting the process all over again, but although I followed the same steps exactly, it opens an 'updating launcher' screen, that finishes, and then it is still not opening. Because that didn't work, I tried a different tutorial found here, but that didn't work either; it says this: error while loading shared libraries: libOpenGL.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

I also received this message on the terminal: To provide a more stable graphical user experience in Crostini, the GPU-based rendering driver (virgl) has been disabled by default for existing and new environments in ChromeOS version 131 and newer. OpenGL and OpenGLES applications will continue to function using a CPU-based rendering driver (swrast). If you would like to re-enable GPU-based rendering in an unsupported capacity, you may visit: chrome://flags#crostini-gpu-support in your Chrome browser and set the flag to "Enabled", then restart your device.

I'm not sure if that's relevant to the issue, but I don't understand why it was working perfectly fine back in December and now--nothing. Is this an issue with Linux or Crostini or Chromebook or Minecraft or the tutorial? Does anyone have any ideas of what else I could try? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, if there's a better subreddit for it, please let me know. Thank you :)

Help - Low performance on The Finals w/ Cachyos

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 1:34pm

Hi there,

I'm trying out The Finals through Steam, no compatibility (I've tried using Proton, but it makes it worse to the point I just get 30fps), but overall I'm getting somewhere between 150 ~ 180fps (low settings) very stuttery with a 4080 super and 7800x3d.

Is the native Linux support just weak for the game, or is there anything I should try with Proton?

Steam OS on iPad Pro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 1:25pm

The 2024 iPad Pros have more processing power than any other handheld and a fantastic screen. Does anyone know of a way to port Steam OS onto it so that good steam games can be played on it instead told relying on the rubbish App Store for iOS gaming when offline - note, not looking to use steam link or similar.

[Help] Can't Control RGB Keyboard Lighting on Predator Helios Neo 16 After Switching to Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 12:42pm

Hey everyone,

I recently switched from Windows to Arch Linux on my Predator Helios Neo 16 laptop, and I'm running into an issue with controlling my RGB keyboard lighting. On Windows, I could easily manage the keyboard backlighting through PredatorSense, but after migrating to Arch, the lighting is stuck on a static color and I can't find a way to control it.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

What I’ve Tried:
  1. Checked for Keyboard Devices:
    • I ran lsusb and lsmod | grep acer_wmi to see if the system was detecting the keyboard and any related lighting controls.
      • Output: The acer_wmi driver was loaded, so it seemed like the system recognized the Acer-specific hardware. Unfortunately, this didn’t give me any control over the RGB lighting.
  2. Checked /sys/class/leds/ for Controls:
    • I looked in /sys/class/leds/ for any keyboard backlight control files.
      • Output: I found network interface LEDs and keyboard indicator LEDs (like Caps Lock), but there were no files related to controlling the keyboard backlighting.
  3. Used evtest to Test Keypresses:
    • I used evtest to check if the keyboard was sending events when I pressed keys (e.g., the Fn + brightness keys).
      • Output: The keyboard was recognized and keypress events were captured, but no events related to backlight control showed up.
  4. Checked for ACPI Events:
    • I installed acpid and tried monitoring ACPI events to see if key combinations like Fn + brightness triggered any changes in the system.
      • Output: No relevant ACPI events showed up in the logs when I pressed the brightness keys, so I couldn’t find a way to control the backlighting this way.
  5. Explored /sys for Backlight Directories:
    • I searched for any backlight-related entries in /sys and found some paths under /sys/class/backlight and /sys/devices/.../nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight.
      • Output: These were related to screen backlight control, but they didn’t seem to affect the keyboard lighting. Changing brightness here didn’t have an effect on the keyboard RGB.
  6. Investigated KDE PowerDevil (I’m using KDE Plasma):
    • Since I’m using KDE Plasma, I checked if PowerDevil was managing the backlight.
      • Output: I looked into DBus methods related to backlighting, but I couldn’t find anything specifically controlling the keyboard backlight.
What Worked:
  • The keyboard is recognized by the system. I can use evtest to confirm keypress events are being captured.
  • I found backlight control paths for the screen backlight through nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight, but I haven’t had any luck with the keyboard backlight.
What Didn’t Work:
  • No control over RGB keyboard lighting. The backlight seems stuck in static mode, and none of the usual methods (ACPI events, sys/class/leds, evtest, or KDE PowerDevil) seem to work.
Questions:
  • Has anyone managed to get Predator Helios Neo 16 RGB keyboard lighting working on Arch Linux?
  • Is there a specific driver or kernel module I’m missing?
  • Does anyone know if there’s a tool that can control the keyboard backlighting for this model on Linux?

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I’d really appreciate it! I’m eager to get the keyboard RGB working again.

Thanks in advance!

Would you recommend only running Linux on a gaming PC?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 2 Jun 2025 - 12:22pm

Linux and Mac are my OS for work and daily use, and I have an older PC that runs on Windows for gaming. I quite dislike Windows but the thing is I can run almost all the games I want to play with very few issues on there.

I really want to be rid of Windows once and for all when I upgrade my PC. I don't have any experience gaming on Linux so I'd appreciate some insight from y'all on how the Linux gaming experience compares to Windows.

Graphics don't matter much to me. I just don't want things to not run or not work well. I can do without games with anticheat or denuvo so at least those won't be any issue.
