OpenGL games crashing constantly as of a couple days ago

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Dec 2025 - 8:40pm

Linux Mint 22.2

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x / Radeon RX 9060 XT

Mesa 25.0.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

Tried adding the following to /etc/environment but cinnamon either crashes or boots to a blackscreen

LIBGL_KOPPER_DRI2=1
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink

Been using this card for a bit under a month since switching from an rtx 3060, had no issues until just a few days ago when I'd start to get amdgpu driver failures playing modded Minecraft, requiring a hard reset to fix, and other previously playable games are crashing within minutes. Been running in circles trying to find bandaid fixes but I haven't been able to make anything work yet.

I am getting the amdgpu: Ring gfx_0.0.0 reset failure error in journalctl when Minecraft locks the system up, no other games are as catastrophic at least, but as of now I'm quite certain my issues lie with OpenGL not playing nice.

FPS drops shortly after game start

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Dec 2025 - 8:18pm

OS: Fedora 43 workstation (Wayland Gnome)

Device: Honor Magicbook 16 Pro 2024 (Intel Ultra5 + Nvidia 4060 laptop)

I tried both proprietary and open nvidia driver, all working but not so well and perform simmilarly. Under throughput_performance in tuned, the games start fine, and I can see nvidia GPU power draw went to 60W in nvidia settings, and GPU utilisation is about 97%, but after few minutes just sitting in the game menu, CPU utilisation went up from 20% to 60% (around 650% for the game threads, all cores have simmilar utilisation rate), and my whole system is lagging, meanwhile GPU utilisation went down to 40%. iGPU utilisation didn't change much and remained very low during the whole process.

I can't figure out why this happens, is it thermal throttling? GPU never got up to 60C. Why would CPU utilisation go up for no apparent reason?

Games I tried to run are "RV there yet" and "Schedule 1", which I believe is not very demanding. "POOLS" also got very significant stuttering and was unplayable.

There are a few occasions when I changed bunch of game settings like resolution and window type, the FPS became normal again and I played for 30 minute until restart without any problems, but unfortunately restarting the game would result in earlier problems.

What's funny though is that "Red Dead Redemption 2" actually runs with higher stable fps.

I'm suspecting if somehow Proton or other translation layers involved caused CPU utilisation to go up the the point where the CPU is bottlenecking the system, or there might a manufacturer setting for performance that I cannot tweak in Linux?

I have reinstalled windows 11 and am planning to dual boot mint, any suggestion would be appreciated!

NaK 4.2.0 Merry Christmas

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25 Dec 2025 - 8:09pm

Hello everyone, I've got some updates to hopefully make the setup and process of actually using NaK a bit more user friendly. But first I have a few things to say! I'm going to be cutting back on the development for NaK to only make some minor changes if needed, like wrapping SLR around deps installs. But the main reason I'm cutting back on development is because I'm going to start actually learning rust and would like to make this a little less gen'd by AI! I hope the position NaK is currently at is a good stop gap for me to learn Rust. I hope you guys understand 😃

Changes:

Revamped the main menu, to explain a bit more on the whole flow for setting up Vortex or MO2. Also revamped the installation completed screen, to show the location of the prefix, launch files. How to add it to steam, and what file to use to actually open MO2.

Added DXVK_CONFIG="dxvk.enableGraphicsPipelineLibrary = False" as a export for amd users, as some modlist for bethesda games give this error if this isn't added:

Added DOTNET_ROOT="" to the launch file as anyone who uses Vortex or Synthesis and develops stuff with dotnet will get an error because wine tries to use the native linux build of dotnet.

Fix game registry should now apply automatically for upon launch (Only for MO2 Portable instances!)

SLR has been added but it currently doesn't do much other than you can add it and enable it for the instances.

WineDPI has been added as an option at the very end for you to configure and scale the window size. Not sure if it does anything if you enable wayland drive for proton.

Dotnet48 and Dotnet481 will now be installed correctly and now will no longer freeze mo2 when right clicking or double clicking mods. It will now also be installed on any proton thats 10+ or should be installed I hope.

Added an auto updater into NaK so if I release an update you should get a popup letting you know I release one.

Moving NaK from the settings now moves it and doesn't leave a symlink behind, in my testing I believe I caught all the issues with this migration. But it stores configs in the .config folder.

And then the final thing is I wish you guys a merry christmas ❤️
