Graphics adapter recommendations for Debian + HOI4

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 8:18pm

The Windows 11 PC I've been using for years is finally starting to show some hardware problems and I'm going to switch over to Linux for my gaming PC. I've already run a few games distributed through Steam on a Chromebook that's been reworked to run Debian and I'm satisfied with that distro.

I'm probably going to get an ASRock Deskmini and an AMD AM4 type processor. I've read processor and memory are more important for HOI4 than a high-end graphics adapter. I still want to get something that works as well as what I've got, which probably wouldn't take much today. I'm still using the GeForce GTX 1050 I bought in 2018 and it works acceptably with what I have (Intel Core i5-6400 + 32GB of RAM on a RAID1 HDD array).

Is there some decent graphics adapter that fits the bill and will run on Debian and the power the DeskMini's adapter provides (120W/19V)?

When can we expect performance parity with windows for RDNA 4?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 8:07pm

So I expect that this is a fairly common question, but I'm having trouble finding answers, guide me to one if you know of.

So after like so many years, i finally got a gaming PC. I have been using a cheap IdeaPad up until now, with Arch and KDE, so I'm decently versed in Arch, not so much about stuff like CachyOS or stuff related to AAA titles since the most I've played on this is balatro and hollow knight, which just.. ran.

I still installed Win11 on my PC, because I kinda didn't wanna leave any performance on the table. But recently bluetooth just stopped working, yk typical windows stuff, and ive been contemplating switching to Cachy. I have enough of a backlog of old games to last me 6-7 months and i can skip on AAA titles until then, but will Mesa for RDNA 4 mature enough to not have a performance difference or outliers (Spiderman 2, Doom TDA, anything PT, and sometimes RT too)

Or should I wait till early 2027 to go for it

Wine mono

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 7:12pm

Slight problem. I pulled up lutris just now to play pokemon infinite fusion, and (I have over 300 hours in this game, it was working, but today) it gave me an error that wine mono isn't installed. The error also said it could install this, but it's more recommended to install it through the blah blah blah, and I hit install. So I tried to play the game again, but nothing happens now when I hit play.

linux pop os steam games startup to black screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 7:01pm

cpu : amd ryzen 7 7800x3d

gpu : radeon rx 7700 xt

gpu driver :cb

Kernel: 6.18.7-76061807-generic

displays: 1 1920 x 1080

kde version 4:5.27.12-0ubuntu0.1

problem:

i have just switched my os from windows to pop os and after a day some games have started to only display a black screen when i launch them first it was green hell and gloomwood witch i didn't think was a big issue since it does not have built in linux but then i tried deadlock who does have linux support and had the same issue however i haven't checked many games but for some reason psuedoregalia works perfectly fine

troubleshooting

on green hell i tried the developer recommended fix was to put the command -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080 into the launch options but this did not work

for deadlock my friend recommend i try proton ge. i have currently only tried going into the proton ge 10-33 , proton 7.0-6 and proton experimental none of these seemed to fix the issue

next thing i tried was running the steam terminal to grab the logs for the output here they are

Can I cast my phone to bazzite.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 6:55pm

As title really. I tried to ask to bazzite discord. No answer. I play bedrock Minecraft a lot with friends. The nix launcher can be a bit temperamental with updates. I'd like to " cast" my phone to my bazzite install with either usb or WiFi. Scrcpy, cannot get to work well. Any other suggestions? Because I'd also use sunshine and moonlight but it doesn't seem to be offered android to bazzite. Any ideas?

Adaptive sync flicker due to large swings on fps.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 6:34pm

Hardware.

Samsung G6 VA 240hz 1440p 10bit. 7800x3d. 7800xt nitro+. MSI PRO B650 A-WIFI. corsair rm850x. Samsung 970 evo plus.

Cachy OS, Limine. Kde plasma. Btrfs.

This a SECOND OS fresh install trying to solve this issue.

Issue.

Adaptive sync when enabled and handshake is realised, produces wide swings in fps, between 60 and 240hz, which produces gamma flickering. Everywhere, not necesarily in gaming.

On adaptive sync display settings in the OS, while VRR enabled on the monitor side, on NEVER it turns on and off because there's no VRR handshake, on AUTOMATIC same because it fails to do the VRR handshake, on ALWAYS, does the VRR handshake and produces the fps swings.

Trouble shooting.

  1. Removed CPU undervolt and EXPO. Both CPU and RAM run at default settings.
  2. Made sure power profiles were not in ECO or laptop mode. Tried performance mode.
  3. Made sure the BIOS SWITCH on the GPU is on performance mode.
  4. Forced performance mode on GPU with LACT.
  5. Before installing cachy OS this time, i changed to a different NVME with almost identical specs. Also installed it, using only this monitor.
  6. Tried both display ports on the GPU.
  7. The monitor only has 1.4 DP. The current cable im using, it supports up to 2.1 UHBR 13.5, which is more bandwith than the DP1.4. Switched cable for the stock one that came with the monitor and no fix. Either way DP 1.4 it's supposed to support 240hz, 1440p, 10bit without any type of compression.
  8. Another confirmation is not a bandwidth issue, i got from switching from 240hz to 120hz mode, with adaptive sync enabled. The fps swings are there, just the same, with the consequent gamma flickering.
  9. Reducing to 8bit doesn't fix the issue either.
  10. I have no problem whatsoever in Windows 11 LTSC IOT.

I dont know if posting a link to a youtube short video with the issue is allowed, because i could do that.

Toughts.

After all this testing, and searching the internet, my next theory would be displayID and modifying the EDID file. Seems a lot very high refresh Samsung odyssey monitors have this issue, however they are related to DSC, which technically im not running. Never the less im new to linux, and i've always been more of a hardware guy than software. This for me would be biting more than i can chew. I honestly dont even understand what would be the issue to fix. This is what im refering to https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1442#note_1017689

Tnx in advance.

Does X3D Processor helping proton layer?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 5:57pm

Hi all,

I'm currently testing my setups with Linux, mostly with Bazzite and some CachyOS.

Setup #1 : 12600K + RX 9070 XT

Setup #2 : 9800X3D + RTX 5090 FE

In both setups, versus a optimized windows 11 setup, Linux is losing in terms of performance.

On the setup #1, by about 10-15% on fps and on the setup #2 by also 12%, BUT with a noticeable gap on power consumption on the RTX 5090 FE (~6%).

On this later case, when I undervolted my RTX 5090 FE in a similar way on both OS (Max core speed, 2700Mhz, Offset +700Mhz) the visible gap is pretty minimum (I would say ~ 5%).

I was wondering if the observation was linked to the X3D (3D VCache) helping the proton layer to go faster.

Would you have any experience to share?

Very strange performance issues with DXVK and VKD3D

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Mar 2026 - 5:07pm

I'm having some trouble understanding what's going on with my performance lately. For the past few months, I’ve been playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1, Team Fortress 2 (which had a mouse focus bug already reported on GitHub), and TF2 Classic—all of them ran perfectly.

However, I'm now facing significant performance drops in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Dead Space Remake, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The issues are particularly bad in Jedi and Dead Space. I haven't had the chance to test other games yet due to a lack of time.

I have already tried the following launch options to fix the stuttering/performance:

  • Jedi: Fallen Order: DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun
  • Dead Space Remake: gamemoderun PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

I’m looking for help to troubleshoot this. Switching distros is not an option for me right now, and I’m definitely not looking to buy an AMD GPU. I’ve already tried updating to the 595 beta driver, which improved things for Kingdom Come 2, but the other games are still struggling.

Specs:

  • OS: Fedora Linux 43
  • DE: KDE Plasma 6.6.2 (Wayland)
  • KDE Frameworks: 6.24.0
  • Qt Version: 6.10.2
  • Kernel: 6.19.6-cachyos1.fc43.x86_64
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X (16 threads)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (Driver: 595.xx beta / 580.126.18)
  • RAM: 16 GiB
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M AORUS ELITE

https://reddit.com/link/1s0pkdx/video/7uaeb37gdmqg1/player

https://reddit.com/link/1s0pkdx/video/1mv28y5cdmqg1/player

Two strange observations:

  • Power Throttling: During testing, "POWER THROTTLING" kept appearing, even though my power limit settings are at their defaults.
  • High Swap Usage: Swap usage became unusually high during the games. After closing the game, the swap usage only decreased by less than 1 GB. I have both zRAM and a swap file enabled; I’m not sure which one the system was prioritizing during the tests, though I believe it was zRAM due to the priority levels.
