Can I run Linux (PopOs) on a USB drive as the main OS and keep my laptop's SSD only for games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11. Februar 2025 - 00:01

I'm gonna start gaming and using my laptop as my main PC. This means I'm limited to only one disk (a 512gb SSD).

As this may fall short in the future with games and software, is it viable to use it just for games and always run Linux through a USB Drive?

Or would it be better to do the opposite?

Configuring dual boot on nobara linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 23:19

Hi! Yesterday i decided to try linux for the first time as a gaming operating system and was really happy with the performance and more importantly stability of the frames per second on nobara linux, really cool!

My issue is, some particular titles i play aren't supported on linux (I'm talking about R6S, i know it is technically supported but they refuse to give acces to the servers for linux users) and i want to install w11 as a dual boot option if i wanna play games like these.

Do I have to clean the drive and install windows FIRST or can i somehow avoid this process and just install it alongside by making a partition, i heard that windows likes to override the bootloader and break everything if you try and do that but im not sure, need some help figuring this stuff out.

What if the games I release, are exclusive to Linux for one year?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 22:52

As I'm diving deeper into Game Dev and Linux, I've come to the realization that making Linux exclusives is not a viable business model.

But, if given I dedicate the time and effort to first make sure the game runs like butter by squashing bugs I never imagined and updating based on what the Linux community desires, I believe that would result in a natural buzz, a following, and some Windows/Mac folk feeling FOMO.

Then after the year is up, I release to Windows/Mac and move on to my next project. Following the same tempo.

I'm spitballing and slightly nervous on asking for advice on this topic. Has anyone tried this? Am I still naive? Would you appreciate the focus on Linux first? Anything I'm not factoring in?

Civ 6 crashing error with Proton.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 22:18

I continue to get this error every single time that i launch civ 6, no matter what launch options i try or what version of proton i use. it seems to only work on linux natively, which from my understanding is poorly optimized and missing content. is there anyway to fix this, or will i be stuck with the linux native version? thank you for any help.

how tf can I mod ->GOG<- Oblivion (TES IV) on linux ???????

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 22:17

I am getting fcking crazy on that shit, MO2 dont recognize Oblivion even if I move its installation and prefixes to Steam directories (for this I used Heroic Game Launcher), MO2 didnt recognize Lutris installation as well, Wrye Bash too, NMM and Vortex I didn't try but probally gonna be the same thing, cause they didn't have linux support

Limo Mod Manager doesn't even open as well, all tutorials that I saw on Youtube was only for Steam versions.

What can I do ? Just acept that GOG games doesn't have properly support on linux and just merge the mods on Windows (case-insensitive) and them install them manually on linux ??? (see, actually my GOG copy of the game is only, and only working on Linux, both in Heroic and Lutris. In Windows it just doesn't open, show me an error box and poof, doesn't start, the same thing happens if I install it on linux using Bottles, so Bottles and just using it on Windows is out of question =P)

I'm on CachyOS with kernel "6.13.2-2-cachyos (64-bit)" and every package updated (as of when I'm posting this), using the native version of Steam, and trying both the latest Proton-GE version and the default "proton-cachyos (native package)".
I've been trying every possible solution that I could've found, but none of them worked. I would really, really appreciate any help I could get from you, thank you.

EDIT: This problem also applies to my other NTFS drives each mounted in the same directory with the names "WIN_A" and "WIN_C".

Any Steam Deck audio guru? Pipewire/clock.quantum

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 21:07

Im trying to get lower audio latency on the deck. Adding a .config/pipewire/pipewire.conf with custom defaults kills pipewire.
Im not sure how to attack this or how to RTFM.

Im ok with linux (first used it back in 1997/8?!) but not really for multimedia/GFX...

Im also not an Arch user :) Sorry! :)

As someone who oy uses my pc to game...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 19:31

My specs are r5 5600x 32gb ram rtx 3070ti. I've always been iffy on switching because of my GPU alone, and in the past I always had issues with auto mounting all my drives. I don't play a lot of online only anti cheat heavy games. I mostly stick to jrpgs/rugs, and occasionally mmos that I know run on Linux. I've always wanted to switch to Linux as I've been a Windows user essentially my whole life and I do like tinkering and messing about with how my desktop and whatnot. But I really only use my pc for gaming, emulation, and watching yt and anime and whatnot. So is the switch warranted when everything on my Tiny11 setup works without any sort of issues? I've been on and off Linux many times but ever since getting this current pc I haven't really touched it.

Marvel Rivals crashing mid game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 19:30

Marvel rivals works great more often than not on my pc, Endeavour OS and a 5700 gpu, but it crashes every so often and I notice that after it does there's an update waiting to be downloaded.

Assuming it's some kind of difference between the version on my pc and the one on the game's server that's causing these crashes is there anything I can do? Has anyone else had similar experiences or seen anything similar with windows users?

Now I just want to stop streaming games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 18:32

After the struggle to run Spiderman Remastered, now I just want to play it using sunshine and moonlight, and as the cell phone is much more compact than the laptop, I can play it calmly at 800x600 resolution which doesn't even make a difference, I'm going to download God of War to play it later too, only success

Do Proton/Wine introduce measurable/feelable latency/input lag?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 17:05

Hey guys, pretty new to linux/linux gaming (latter being mostly just my steam deck), i intend to main linux in a dual boot setup once i build a new pc mainly because win11 seems drwadful and most of my day to day use doesn't require windows anyway. Probably going for a nobara/bazzite install.

Uh, anyway, ime emulation can add noticeable amounts of input lag/latency. Proton however doesn't need to emulate hardware, rather just translate api calls and such (to my knowledge) so i was wondering if anyone has measured it or noticed any or found ways to reduce it? (i remember reading something about needing to change something to turn off some sort of anti tearing feature in the os) and something similar to AMD's antilag feature that they ended up nuking after it got people banned in online games, the linux copy was called something like latencyflex iirc?

Will be going for an All AMD setup on AM5 if that matters.

Thanks.

Oh, before i forget, is there some sort of RAMdisk equivalent for linux?

Nvidia 2060 super troubles (dota 2, marvel rivals)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. Februar 2025 - 16:19

I play fairly low requirements titles, mainly WoW and Dota 2 (in between wow seasons), but recently my gainward 2060 super seems to be speedrunning to its demise recently with two main issues:

  1. NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:26:00): 79, GPU has fallen off the bus. - This has been a recurring issue that comes and goes across different drivers version and is intermittent at best (seemed to occur mostly _after_ exiting WoW and during browsing on firefox. Since I tried marvel rivals it has been happening every other match and reoccuring even seconds after a fresh bootup. I have tried changing the PSU and reseating the card. It does not appear to have made a difference. A full log of the latest crash can be found here: https://pastebin.com/bCxsxUFH

  2. Sudden slowdown in performance. Happened both in marvel rivals and dota 2. After about 30 minutes of smooth gameplay, there's a sudden drop in performance, reduction in fps (but still above 60) and severe increase in jittering. While the fps counter is still showing 80-90fps, the game feels like 30fps. The drop in performance matches the below point in nvtop where the gpu % went from a stable line to dropping.

Any ideas what the issue could be ? is my card cooked ? could my arch install be somehow borked (it's around 10 years old at this point)
