Any reason as to why Bazzite lags on Gaming Mode but not on Desktop Mode? And something else.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 2:02am

Let me explain, my cousin, who is new to linux, wanted more performance because certain games didn't get enough FPS in his opinion, so I installed him Bazzite which is just the right one. I went through the setup and allat, booted it up, working fine, installing updates and stuff, but then, when it finishes and the laptop goes to Gaming Mode by default, everything is slow and a bit delayed, but I went to Desktop Mode and suddenly everything's fine somehow 😐. Go back to Gaming Mode, same slowness. Search online as to why but got no results, so I figured y'all could help! The OS also got another problem, we tested Roblox (Sober) at everything max and the cap set to 240 and no problem, the graphics card and everything was in use and working fine, but when I tried Geometry Dash on Gaming Mode, it installed, launched, and the FPS cap should have been around 1000FPS like Windows did, but instead was at 100-400FPS which, I thought, meant that the graphics card wasn't being used, and I'm like what? Cause Roblox is fine but Geometry Dash is not? Tested on other games in the Gaming Mode and same results, the CPU takes everything. And that's kind of a problem for big games, so if anyone could help it would be great!

Best 4k GPU for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23 Jul 2025 - 1:41am

Did some research, and I came to the conclusion that for Linux you would want either the RX 9070-XT or the RX 7900-XTX. AMD seems to run close to windows performance (and sometimes every better) with those cards, more so the 7900-XTX. Most videos I found on the 9070-XT were from shortly after their launch, where they were a bit behind windows. I'm not sure if that's improved or not. Maybe as of right now the 9070-XT runs just as close to windows as the 7900-XTX did.

I'm not seriously considering Nvidia because their top tier cards are very expensive. Although the 4090 and 5090 probably do compete well even on Linux, due to their overall better performance than AMD. But I believe on Linux those cards experience quite the drop in performance from Windows, unlike AMD. And if you're talking best bang for your buck, even on Windows I think AMD is considered the better option.

Curious about any opinions on my take here. I've only been researching a little here and there for the past few days. I'm also sure some cheaper AMD cards are also very viable for 4k, will just struggle more with the latest games of course.

I recently upgrading to a Sony Bravia TV that's 4k@120hz. So personally that's why I'm interested in upgrading. My 1080 ti is not handling it well lol. To get 4k@120Hz you apparently need a DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 cable:

https://www.cablematters.com/pc-1398-154-cable-matters-8k-displayport-14-to-hdmi-cable-6ft-18m-with-4k-120hz-8k-60hz-unidirectional-324gbps-display-port-14-to-hdmi-8k-cable-in-black-for-rtx-40804090-rx-78007900-and-more-upc818707024515.aspx?gQT=1

At the moment I only get 60Hz available on my 1080 ti, and I believe it's because I'm using just an HDMI to HDMI cable. I'm also wondering if my CPU is a bottleneck at all too. I have a i7 6700k. If it's not bottlenecking me right now, it for sure will if I do upgrade my GPU.

Proton Errors: Error code 2?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 11:54pm

Can someone translate this for me? This is a steam error log for trying to boot up a game on my main drive. Game enters launching, running, and then fails. Final output being:

wine: failed to open "c:\\windows\\system32\\steam.exe": c0000135

Please note I do have wine installed on my system, but have not directly connected it to steam in any way, or have done much configuration for it as of current. Further note I am running arch, so I may be missing needed framework (but I do not believe I am missing any drivers as none of these errors appear driver related).

Please help TvT

Would anyone want to create a list of device management software that works on Linux or has its replacements?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 11:25pm

Hi I've been trying to find software for few devices and how those can be replaced run through wine etc.

I think that having a github repo with list or outright dedicated webpage which would work similar to protondb with solutions for specific software of hardware vendors/producents would be great thing.

anyone would like to colaborate on making such thing?

Headphones can't connect via Bluetooth

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 10:01pm

Hey guys,

I'm running Garuda, the Dragonized KDE-Version, since a few years now. It's been fine bar some typical problems running a Nvidia card. I've recently bought wireless Sony Headphones (WH-1000XM5) and they work fine with my phone and work laptop. Searching for it via the UI Bluetooth Widget Garuda comes with (actually dont know which it is) and via bluetoothctl can't seem to find it. Since the Garuda-install I haven't messed with audio modules yet, as everything I used worked out of the box. I'm running Pipewire. Some Online Guides and ChatGPT advised to check some outputs to see if everything is in order:

$ pactl info | grep "Server Name" Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 1.4.6) $ pactl list | grep bluetooth session.services = "[bluetooth.midi, api.v4l2, api.bluez, midi, policy.linking.standard, audio, policy.device.routes, api.alsa-seq, bluetooth.audio, policy.device.profile, video-capture, policy.default-nodes, policy.linking.role-based, api.alsa, api.libcamera]"

Other Guides suggested to install ´pipewire-pulse wireplumber´, which I did, restarted BT via Systemctl but to no avail.

The Archwiki hasn't really been helpful yet (or I haven't recognized the useful part).

I've been using exclusively Linux for quite some years now and am a vivid fan of open source in general, but despite being a developer myself I've somehow managed to actually not know a lot to troubleshoot my own system :D Can you guys help me? Would be really nice to finally ditch my old wired Headset to free up some desk space.

Did i do something wrong or is my laptop just so slow?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 9:54pm

I got a Laptop for work and tried running The Binding Of Isaac on it. I would say it's not a really "heavy" game, but it takes like 2:40 min to start. It seems really long to me and because i don't have knowledge about hardware i wanted to ask if i configured my system wrong or if its just so slow.

[7800X3D/9060XT] Random hard freezes

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 9:49pm

hi everyone,

since i got my new PC i have been experiencing random hard freezes that totally hang the system and require a button reset. if sound is playing right when the freeze happens, the last ~1 second is looped. it has happened when i was just browsing the web, watching videos or playing games. the freezing usually happens when the system has been running for a few hours but has also happened sooner than that.

i wasn't able to find a recent enough post about that resembled my issue, but i've seen something said about RAM and memory swaps. i am running DDR5 with EXPO enabled on my ASUS motherboard and ~20GB of swap memory for 32GB of RAM.

some other details that might be relevant:

  • uname -a: Linux nixos 6.15.7 #1-NixOS SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Jul 17 16:44:05 UTC 2025 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  • Mesa version: 25.1.6

Wow Install via Steam on Bazzite.. cannot find WoW directory

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 9:04pm

So as title of post says, I installed WoW via Steam on Bazzite. The game launches fine and works great. I just cannot for the life of me find the install directory so I can put in some addons. I left the default install path, but I can't find it. When I go to browse local files, it takes me to where Battle.Net is installed, but not where WoW is.

Anyone have any advice?

RTX HDR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 8:13pm

One of the main things holding me back from switching over fully is RTX HDR. I have a nice hdr monitor and really like the look of rtx hdr for non-hdr games. Is there a viable alternative or way to get it working on Linux?
