Which distros for my two systems?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. April 2025 - 08:22

In light of Windows 10 losing support this year and me not wanting to find out what kinda stuff Microsoft will start doing after that I have decided to switch both of my PCs to Linux before october. I will be gaming and watching media on both of them.

The first system is my travel mini-pc with

an rtx 4060ti

a ryzen 5 5600x

32gb of ram

and 2tb of storage.

That's the one I will be installing Linux first (as soon as in 2 weeks) on as a "trial phase" to learn the ropes of daily driving Linux.

The second system is my main home PC with

a rx 6800xt

a ryzen 7 5800x3d

32gb of ram

and 1tb of storage currently but I will probably upgrade soon since it's still a pcie gen 3 drive

This one I will probably install Linux on quite a bit later, sometime around july-september I'm thinking.

For my main pc I don't mind having to take time to set everything up but for my travel pc I would prefer it to be an easier experience.

I have already asked a friend for recommendations and they recommended Ubuntu for the travel pc and Arch for the main pc, however I'm getting a second opinion here to make sure those are actually good options.

So I tried garuda....

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. April 2025 - 07:39

After trying the live image and liking it I decided to dual boot garuda on my win 10 pc to see if it can replace windows as my gaming OS(I refuse to use win 11) but for the life of me I can't get doom 3 to play on steam. I've tried flatpak, different versions of proton even proton-ge. The game just says "launching" for a few seconds then stop and goes back to "play". I am not a linux genius so any help would be appreciated.

Free downloadable installer games/tests to test my Maxwell card on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. April 2025 - 05:00

Web search found either steam games or some online or some low end for internal graphics. I'm looking for free offline games with downloadable installer (or that just run from appimage something) to test my installation of Nvidia drivers for Maxwell equipped PC on Linux Mint.

For fun they better be games but could be some graphics tests/shows that can show if drivers work fine. nvidia-smi shows something about card found but CUDA does not work so I wonder if games do and I want to have these tests for later usage (not depending on sites still providing them) - hence downloadable. TIA

Kernel: 6.8.0-57-generic
CPU: Intel i7-9750H (12) @ 4.500GHz

The new 6.14 Kernel is amazing!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. April 2025 - 03:42

So, I was a Mint user but when I heard that there was a new Kernel about to be released, I decided to switch to Ubuntu (No particular reason for this OS, I just chose it so please don't complain or moan about it) to try it it out.

I had to install some software from Mainline Kernels so it would update to the 6.14 Kernel and it now works like a dream!

I was struggling with Space Engineers (it kept being really slow/quitting without any reason, sometimes just not working) and I've just spent 10 hours playing it without a glitch.

Not sure about the anti-cheat side of things as I don't normally play those sort of games.

It seems to fix some of the problems with Linux gaming, so it you're able to install it, I would recommend you do (what I write comes with no warranty or guarantee!)

Anyway, Happy Gaming

Weird lighting issues on FFXIII on Steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. April 2025 - 00:31

I am playing FFXIII on Steam using the proton-ge-custom and everything is running fine, except that abilities and other light sources are causing massive flares, sometimes taking up the entire screen during combat

I'm on Garuda Linux with a GeForce GTX 1650 Super

I have tried tweaking AA in the starting screen, all my Nvidia packages are up to date.

I am at a loss, so any help would be appreciated.

Unable to get a game started in Debian 12

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 22:43

I bought a mini PC GMKtec K11 to play Steam games. I installed Steam via Flatpak because I could not get the native install to work after following the Debian wiki. I installed Sunshine flatpak from Github. I following the Sunshine Flatpak local installation from the Sunshine wiki.

I was able to remote-in via Moonlight (Flatpak). However, when I launch a game like Assasin Creed or Counter Strike 2, it shows the intro for a few seconds then it stopped. In CS2, I was stuck in the orange screen showing the Counter Strike 2. In Assasin Creed, the screen is black with blinking cursor.

With SUnshine, since the screen is stuck, I could not exit. The only option that I have is to reboot the GMKtec K11 host. When I launched the game locally, the game crashed and got a pop up Steam window saying "Vulkan encountered unrecoverable error VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST."

I am not sure what is going on at this point.

Steam (runtime) broke after system upgrade?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 22:36

I'm using arch and after a system upgrade Steam (runtime) does not work by clicking the task manager icon. Curiously when I right click the icon and start it with a selection it launches correctly. I.e. right click steam icon -> click store, library etc it will launch correctly. After this upgrade it broke my autostart because of the error stated in the screenshot. It wouldn't be much of an issue except I mainly use my desktop for gaming so I would like Steam to launch on my system start.

State of nouveau/nvk/zink

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 22:05

I used nouveau on its own a few years back and it was borderline unusable. But apparently theres been more work put in and NVK/Zink potentially makes gaming possible. My question then is, are they stable enough to use daily? and what performance hit will i see?

AMD Rack Mount Desktop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 21:55

Recently added a Sliger CX4200a case to my rack, containing a 9950x3d and 9070xt. Running it with 64 gigs of RAM @ 6000Mhz, and all NVME because the Nova motherboards have 5 slots! I'm leveraging AUR to pull in the latest mesa git drivers for the 9070xt and it's been mostly a positive experience. Some games require a restart initially but once things work, they work. Ironically as much as I've loved the idea of immutable distributions like NixOS or Bazzite, I found myself spending more time fighting the OS getting basic tooling to work (getting a Rust compiler and LSP happy with Neovim was a nightmare on NixOS) thus forcing me to fall back on containers compared to when I go back to the sweet embrace of Arch or Endeavor. Then, I can BTRFS my way out of any issues that pop up, or just version control things in a way where I'm not as stressed.

I run fiber optic DP2.1 to my display, and powered USB to support peripherals.

This rack (32U Sysrack) supports a Proxmox cluster that hosts my location sharing (Traccar), calendar and contacts, cost splitting app (Spliit), phone backup, reverse proxy, Jellyfin, and more. My firewall and router is managed through OPNSense, with a managed switch routing VLANS to my different services. I really love my power supply with current meter- it's at 2A for rack idle, and 5A-6A when playing AAA games. I also swapped the rack fans (jet engines) with Noctua, hooked up to the temperature-based fan controller with 4 temperature deadbands. Currently tuning these, but 75F is my comfortable sweet spot.

Problems with full-screen graphics mode / primary display etc.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 21:18

Hi, 10 years deep in-to Linux, Unable to figure this out. On the Cinnamon desktop environment, Full-screening a lot of programs will cause it to happen on the left display which is not the primary display. In the case of valve games, it changes the graphics mode down to the resolution the game is set to even though the primary display is already at that resolution

Cinnamon is the only desktop environment I've tried that does this. LXDE & XFCE do not do this. (I've had this issue with my previous computer as-well). If it matters, This is using AMDGPU. Any thoughts / speculation / hate comments etc etc would be appreciated.

While I was uploading this, Firefox did it as-well. which almost never happens. woo hoo

Helldivers 2 / Linux Mint: Can't ADS (aim down sights)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 21:14

So I've been using Mint (Cinnamon desktop, OS and all software running up-to-date) for a few months now and never once have I been able to ADS in Helldivers 2. I've updated the game and verified files since install, but I'm not sure what could cause this. Any ideas on what might keep me from being able to ADS? (I've left it bound to default: right click/hold). I have tried changing in-game keybinds around with no success (i.e. different button to aim or switching from hold to tap)

SteamOS disruption and future

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. April 2025 - 21:04

So, I've always thought about jumping from windows to Linux for security and efficiency but I always left it apart because of gaming, gaming here has always been not only hard but unfriendly and not that beneficial, until now.

I would like to hear some people that used it on pc share their opinions on steamOS before doing the jump, is there anything relevant I should know before? I play league, honkai, Minecraft and a bunch of other games, I name these games specifically because they're not steam related.
