Haven't seen this in years... Would the survey results be higher if we got this more often?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 9:33pm

I can't even remember the last time I received the opportunity to submit a survey. This computer was built with the 9070 launch, and it took until today to finally prompt.

I'm curious if the survey results would show more Linux use if the surveys were requested more often. I've been 100% on Linux for 10 years and maybe been asked 2 or 3 times before now.

How to back up World War Z save game on Epic through the Heroic launcher.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 9:22pm

Im ready to distrohop again, only issue is i cant get cloud saving on heroic to work with epic.

Im playing WWZ:Aftermath and would like to move the save over to my new distro, but for the life of me i cant get it to work. I tried activating the cloud save feature, forcing an upload, new client forcing the download - nothing. I tried the pro online feature and it will work only on the machine that uploaded - go to the new OS and it says i am lvl 1 no unlocks. Dont wanna lose a good 80 hours of gameplay here...

Im dualbooting on an old drive (HDD) first before i install the new OS on my main drive (SSD)

EXT4 + LVM vs BTRFS - Advice wanted

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 8:53pm

Hi everyone!

So I have been working on migrating from Windows to Linux as my main OS. However, I noticed that my root partition of 20GB is apparently not enough and is on the brink of filling up. To resize it, I need to go boot through a USB drive and mess with the partitions to increase the size of the root partition. This is from what I have read pretty complex and a pretty big pain in the ass, especially as over time the root partition gets full and has to be resized again.

Now at my workplace, our PC drives are set up with LVM so that we can easily resize our partitions on the fly. But, I have also heard that CachyOS (which I have heard a lot here use) uses a filesystem called BTRFS which also includes a way to easily resize partitions.

I wanna know if you guys can provide some insight in this issue & some recommendation on how to move forward. I am fine with reinstalling my current OS (Arch Linux) or go with CachyOS.

low fps in system shock 2 classic

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 6:57pm

I am running the game with steam and proton. I get around 7 fps in the main menu and 4 in gameplay. This game is from 1999 and should run well on my laptop. I also tried installing pirated windows version with lutris, same problem with low fps.
I tried searching the issue on protondb.com but it wasn't there.
My system: fedora 42, gnome 48, Intel® Core™ i5-2450M and Intel® HD Graphics 3000
May you please help me out?

Is anyone here at least slightly interested in Linux exclusive games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 6:32pm

A lot of you want more multiplatform games to arrive on Linux but I also wanted to know if some of you guys had a small curiosity over games being released exclusively for it, as in designed all around its operating system. There were actually quite a small amount of Linux exclusives (though it vastly pales in comparison to the large amount on Windows) and it kinda stuns me (though unsurprisingly) by the huge lack of support when it comes to that. Yh I already know what a lot of you might say: "this is stupid beyond belief" and "no one cares" but this is just from my own perspective so you guys are welcome to try and debate over it. So what are your overall thoughts?

Dell Precision M2800 - Dual Graphics problem?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 6:12pm

I've got a Dell Precision M2800 laptop 'workstation' - i7 4th gen CPU, and a FirePro W4170M with 2GB Dedicated GDDR5 (Same chip as Radeon HD 8790M).

Installed Kubuntu 25.04. Installed Steam. Steam wouldn't open unless it's opened via terminal (Throws a vulkan error, but that's about it) - After some searching, I edited the steam.desktop to remove PrefersNonDefaultGPU=true, and now it'll open via the menu/taskbar. However, it crashes the DE any time I try to start a game. Everything goes black, drops me back to login menu, and refuses to log in again until after a restart.

I'm assuming it's because it's trying to use integrated graphics (which 4th gen's IGP doesn't seem to have vulkan support on linux). I tried installing AMD's driver stack, but it fails when trying to install (driver package states ubuntu 24.04, but this is 25.04).

I've found a million posts about how to force dedicated graphics with an Nvidia GPU on a laptop, but can't find much on doing so with AMD Graphics. The laptop doesn't seem to have a way to disable the integrated graphics in bios.

Anyone been through this? Ideas? Different distro to try that has better graphics chip controls? An AMD driver that will properly install and add the needed support?

Tired of Windows crashes while gaming — complete beginner thinking of switching to Linux. Please help!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 5:08pm

Hey everyone, I’m honestly at my breaking point. I have a Lenovo LOQ laptop with an i5 HX processor, RTX 4050 (6GB VRAM), and 24GB RAM. On paper, this thing should fly—but Windows keeps crashing on me, especially when I’m gaming (GTA V mainly).

It happens even when nothing seems overloaded—CPU runs around 30–40%, GPU around 60–70%, temps are totally fine. But after just 2–3 hours of gaming, everything freezes or crashes. I’ve updated drivers, tried clean installs, checked temps, and nothing helps. It’s happened too many times, and I’m honestly just done with Windows at this point.

I’m a complete Linux beginner, but I want to take control of my system. I’m tired of background stuff I don’t understand, updates that break things, and not knowing what’s causing these crashes. I’d rather learn something new than keep fighting Windows.

What I’m looking for:

A Linux distro that’s good for gaming, but beginner-friendly too.

Support for NVIDIA RTX 4050.

Ability to run games like GTA V, Elden Ring, etc. (via Steam, Proton, or Wine).

Something stable where I don’t feel like my system is out of my hands.

Dual-boot at first, maybe move fully later.

Can anyone guide me? I’m not scared to learn, I just need to know where to start and which distro won’t make me want to scream on Day 1.Also, if anyone has switched from Windows in a similar setup, I’d love to hear your experience.

Thanks so much in advance!

Any Distro that works well with AMDs 9070 out of the box at this point?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 4:42pm

We all know Linux and brandnew hardware is always a bit... problematic. But its been 2 months at this point and with the 6.14 Kernel it SHOULD work I suppose. Does anyone with that GPU can say how it works so far? Or would it be wiser to stick with Windows a bit longer? I had hopes with Ubuntu 25.04 but apparently it still has some trouble with certain games, which doesnt sound too promising as it comes with 6.14 as well as a fairly recent Mesa driver.

Significantly poor performance on Titanfall 2 in Fedora with NVidia 570.144 closed drivers compared to Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 3:40pm

Specs: rtx 3070, r5 5500, 16gb ram

Both were installed on SSDs. I've tried several different Proton versions. Not sure what the issue could be. Is it potentially a driver issue? How would I manually install an older driver in fedora? I've setup secure boot for my current and future ones using akmod and importing the public_key.der so will changing driver versions affect this or need me to resign it somehow?

Dualboot vs VM/KVM on laptop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 3:37pm

I have a Victus 15 (Ryzen 5 8kHS, 4050 and 16 GB RAM) and I'm planning to switch to Arch Linux or NixOS when I get a new SSD, and with that I'm planning to do a 512GB partition exclusively for windows, but I'm hearing people talking about the advantages of KVM and how it is near identical in gaming performance-wise, and considering I'm gonna run anticheat games (fortnite the biggest example), VR programs like Virtual Desktop and whatever doesn't run Linux, is it worth it or should I instead dualboot?

Dead Space Remake - Won't Launch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 3:08pm

I've had the Dead Space Remake from 2023 on my wish list since it launched. Bought the game a week ago on Steam with a gift card.

For the life of me I cannot get it to launch. Click the play button, it turns green, then immediately goes back to the Play button again.

Fedora 42 KDE Latest nVidia drivers (akmod) RTX 4090 Proton Experimental, but also tried v9 and Hotfix.

So far all other games work as expected, this is the only one I cannot get working.

Proton DB has it listed as a Gold tier game, so it should just work. All recent reports show the game working for other people without any crazy extra steps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Troubleshooting Monster Hunter Wilds freeze

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 2:40pm

Hey, new to gaming on Linux (but not Linux in general). I've got this issue where Monster Hunter Wilds freezes for about ~4 seconds (*just* the game, everything else is still running) and then continues on. It happens at least once per session - it was much worse when I was on Proton 9.0-4. I played around with using experimental, hotfix, and the 10.0 beta, but they were all about the same with 1 freeze per session. Normally I'd throw up my hands and say it is what it is, but if I'm in multiplayer these freezes make me get kicked out of the session, so it's kind of annoying. I've had this machine running Windows (till about 2 days ago) and encountered no issues, so I'm pretty certain it's not my hardware. People on protonDB also seem to have got it working with very similar hardware.

I'm running Hyprland with Arch, 7800XT with a 5700x3D. Game's on an SSD. I'm using mesa 25.0.5 installed via pacman. On Arch 6.14.4. Game-wise, I do have reframework installed. Any tips to troubleshoot would be appreciated!

Managing Steam proton prefixes outside of steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 5 May 2025 - 2:18pm

Hey,

I’ve been trying to mod pathfinder wrath of the righteous, and for this I need to run an application in the context of a proton prefixes created by steam.

I tried Lutris and bottles but I don’t seem to be able to figure out how to add an application to an existing prefix. Bottles supposedly can manage steam prefixes but I am not able to see them in bottles.

I know that I can add the mod app as a non steam game, but I don’t want to clutter the steam library with mod tools .
