DayZ unexplainably stopped working and nothing helps(Ubuntu)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 11:25pm

Hey I really need help figuring out how to fix this. I'm a beginner on linux and I'm basically clueless so it's probably an easy fix but I can't for the life of me figure this out. I've been playing DayZ on Ubuntu for a while now and after getting over some initial problems its been working fine. A few weeks ago I launched dayz and got an eternal black screen. Since then everytime I try to launch DayZ , either via a script for mods or via the regular launcher , I get a black screen and have to close the laptop with the power button. It doesn't even crash just stays on black screen basically forever and i cant exit it with any key bind. I have tried uninstalling and reiinstaling DayZ , restarting Steam ,verifying game files , switching from using Proton Experimental to other versions , switching the map_count value to something other than 1048576 , using launcher scripts and nothing seems to work. I suspect theres something wrong with steam because before the black screen I always see on console " Unable to acquire exclusive lock on steam runtime sniper(3)" or something like this but honestly im pretty sure I saw this on the console during launching back when it was working fine. I have tried verifying steam sniper and nothing. I cannot uninstall steam runtime sniper 3 or actually any Steam tools like Hotfix , soldier etc. I saw on another thread that i need to remove them from all games to remove them but Steam still wont let me uninstall the steam tools so i can reinstall them... Whatever tips you might have on what I need to do will be very much appreciated. . I didn't change anything from the last time Dayz launched to the first time it gave me the black screen so it's not something i did nor an update cause im sure i would have seen threads with people having the same problem. I will probably completely delete steam and dayz from my laptop and reinstall them but I dread the download times...

Sanity check before moving on

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 10:55pm

I've been using Linux Mint on my 2012 Macbook Pro for a few months now and I'm sold on Linux as a daily computing OS. I was intending on switching my gaming PC over to Mint or Fedora and then discovered the issues surrounding anti-cheat on Linux.

Unfortunately about half of the games I play involve anti-cheat, so that is a deal-breaker for me. But before I move on from the idea of using Linux for my gaming PC (for a while at least), I want to ensure I'm not missing anything.

I know I can't use Linux natively. I thought maybe I can still run Linux but just run a Windows VM when playing those games, but my understanding is that the VM wouldn't have kernel access, which is require by the anti-cheat tools, and would also not work.

This correct, anything I'm missing?

Can´t open Hearts of Iron 4 via Steam on Ubuntu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 10:41pm

When I try to open HoI4 on Steam, I get directed to the Launcher. When I press play then I get a Error message (exit code 127) with the following details: /home/g/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Hearts of Iron IV/hoi4: error while loading shared libraries: libOpenGL.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I tried everything I found on the internet so far, including reinstalling the game, checking the data via steam, and the usual things like restarting etc. Another thing I wanted to do was to change the rendering settings in the launcher for the game itself, which I know exists, however it is not shown, maybe because its on ubuntu. I suspect that this is the issue, because it is kind of stated in the error specification itself, but I don´t know what to do. Any help is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Games like Battlefield 1

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 10:22pm

I loved this game up until they introduced an anticheat which killed the Linux support and did nothing to help against hackers (classic)

What FPS do you guys play that has that Battlefield gunplay while supporting Linux?

Moving Countries - Need new laptop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 10:01pm

Ayo, Not a big reddit user, but would love to hear any suggestions from the community if any.

I am moving countries soon, I love linux, am a slight gamer and love to code random shit.

I have a razer laptop at the moment, and I like it (when it works), I'm a sucker for shit made out of metal and nice constructed laptops, but I did buy it second hand as I'm also a sucker for being economical.

But my laptop is dying, I would list the faults but it's too many and I've ripped it open to fix it so many times it might as well be operating on a corpse at this point, I plan to sell it on ebay (as faulty of course), but would like to put the money or part of it towards something new.

I ideally would like something smaller than 15", can game I have a 1070 max q at the moment, and that almost runs everything fine, but more power would be nice, but not required (although more power for running python AI locally would be nice).

Again I love linux, more experienced with arch, but not tied to it, just prefer the linux flow if you get me, and there isn't much compatability with razer shit with linux (although I'm not tied to razer either, just like their laptop construction).

Just wondering if anyone has some suggestions about anything I should get, thinking the linux gaming communitymight have something more applicable to suggest for me as I do like to game (just not AAA or AA), but hey if no one even replies thats sweet.

Even if its just saying bout the cool shit that you have or like i'd be interested to listen, will probably just end up getting a razer blade stealth or something if I can find a good deal on ebay.

Cheers anyway, hope people are having a nice day.

:)

Steam games on separate drive

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 9:35pm

I have my all of my steam games (all of my games really) on a separate drive completely from my windows install. Today I'm trying to install bazzite as a dual boot on yet another drive (so one drive is Windows, one drive is Bazzite/Mint, one drive for documents, and one drive for games). However when I try to point steam to the game drive in Bazzite I get a "Steam Library Folder is not executable" error and I can't select. I found a guide trying to walk through mounthing using sudo mkdir /media/game drive but nothing was happening so I'm kind of at a loss. Anybody run into this before?

What am I missing?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 9:18pm

I just switched back to Fedora Workstation 42 from Windows and got the majority of things setup. I have my nvidia drivers installed and tested some games through steam using Proton that work pretty well.

One game in particular that makes no sense as to why it’s struggling is Skyrim. I have a Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 3070ti, and 32 GB of 3200 MHz RAM. I should not be getting under 10 FPS on this game.

I used protondb and already made the adjustments others used there and I have not seen any improvements. Am I missing something?

Linux increases the GHz of my CPU except when it really needs it

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 8:08pm

https://reddit.com/link/1khwx42/video/8cwqixyoklze1/player

I have already tried the solutions that appear in the arch linux guide but none have helped me, maybe I am doing something wrong but honestly I can't think of what else to do, in the video I show some of the solutions that I thought were going to work but didn't. As you can see in the video I am checking the ghz of my cpu with the xfce4 plugin (xfce4-cpufreq-plugin) and I notice that the cpu changes the GHz sometimes but does not go up to 2.10GHz when I am doing tasks that require the entire cpu.

If you need any information that I didn't give in the video, feel free to ask me.

Playing Spore (2008 EA) on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 7:13pm

Hello All,

I have an issue with Spore running on Linux. I receive a 1004 and 2000 error when launching using ANY proton version.

There are Windows and Linux users which have the same issue as recent as 2021, which involved adding a registry entry for electronic arts, etc and they stated it was now able to run.

I am able to update the system.reg file for the specific game but when I launch the game, the system.reg is restored to it's original clean version.

Does anyone know how to edit the system.reg for a specific game so that it is NOT overwritten as soon as you try to launch the game?

Thanks in advance!

Schedule I on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 6:04pm

I'm completely new to Linux and after watching at least a dozen videos i got interested and decided to install Linux Mint on my laptop because i'm too scared to install it to my main pc. I use my pc for only gaming. After installing Linux Mint on my laptop and installing steam through the Software Manager i enabled Steam Play for all other titles, after trying Proton Hotfix, Proton Experimental and Proton 9.0-4 the game still didnt work please help me. When i open Schedule I it launches normally and shows the TVGS loading screen but after that the screen goes black and shows the Schedule I Logo and some kind of install happening, after that the game shuts off.
