Can't play fallout new Vegas
I've just downloaded fallout new Vegas from steam, but everytime I try to play it nothing happens, for a while it just says launching and then it acts like I didn't even click play
I'm using arch Linux with kde plasma 6
I tried running it with proton GE and proton experimental I also checked the integrity of game files, it said that one file is missing or damaged, it installed the file after, but fallout new Vegas still didn't start
Help would be appreciated 🙏

BS Manager/NixOS : game not working, but works through Steam
Hi everyone!
So for the context, I am not a complete Linux noob, but I do admit that I have not catched up with everything that happened in the world of Linux on desktop, and I never tried playing in VR on Linux until now. I have been an Arch user and I am comfortable with the CLI tho.
I have finally decided to switch back to Linux on my main desktop after 6 years of putting it aside because of various compatibility issues. Most of them are solved now, and I want to ditch out Windows entirely.
I chose NixOS because of its reproducible nature. Linux distributions still need some tinkering on my side to make everything work perfectly, and that feature lets me fix all of the issues once, then simply put back my .nix files on a fresh install to fix everything again. It relieves me about figuring out how to fix things again, maintaining some documentation, and just wasting time only in case my system crashes.
So the issue I am trying to solve is the following: I have a perfectly working SteamVR setup and Beat Saber works fine when I launch it on Steam without any extra arguments (what a pleasant surprise after all I could read online!). However, when I try to launch any version of the game through BS Manager, it shows the splash screen on my desktop and in my VR headset, in which I can move my head and see the logo move, then it crashes.
I have tried to put this custom launch option in BS Manager but nothing changes: STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="/home/hyperfelt/.local/share/Steam" %command%. I also have tried with SteamVR stable and beta, still nothing changes.
I have noticed though that when I launch Beat Saber through Steam, it stays in windowed mode on my desktop and it has a "X" icon on it, meaning that it makes use of XWayland I guess? When launching through BS Manager, it goes in fullscreen on my desktop then it crashes. This might be a hint.
Here is my configuration:
- OS: NixOS 25.05
- Desktop environment: KDE 6
- GPU: (GIGABYTE) Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti / driver: nvidia-open I think? I'm using this in my configuration.nix (more info on https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Nvidia) :
hardware.nvidia = {
modesetting.enable = true;
powerManagement.enable = false;
powerManagement.finegrained = false;
open = true;
nvidiaSettings = true;
package = config.boot.kernelPackages.nvidiaPackages.stable;
};
- VR headset: Valve Index
And some logs from Proton: https://gist.github.com/hyperfelt/b8b400d8816984afca70a58305cfe747
Can you help me?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if my English isn't that great!
EDIT: added my desktop environment

I think I'm ready to switch
I think I am ready to switch from Windows 11 to Linux on my desktop, which is primarily used for gaming.
I am not new to Linux at all, its all I use on my laptops - primarily Arch due to how light and efficient it is, but If I switch my desktop over I'll go with Mint purely because of how stable it is, however I am open to suggestions for what to go with.
The reason for this post first and foremost is to clarify a few things for myself and see about some work arounds.
The first thing is my GPU. It is an Nvidia RTX 3060, and I know Nvidia cards arent exactly known for being the most simple option with the Penguin.
Secondly, any games I want to play that rely on anti cheat, Battlefield for example, how does this work? The last I heard this can be close to impossible on Linux due to how anti cheat works. Could I not just run games like these through Wine? Any other games I'll be checking how they run on Proton DB. Does anybody play Microsoft Flight Simulator, the 40th anniversary edition? How is it?
How do modded games work, such as Skyrim? Will I need to redownload all the mods or Vortex?
Every single time I have had to reinstall Windows or when I have previously tried Linux on the desktop, I have had to redownload my entire Steam library as I cannot get it to work after reinstalling Steam. ANy good guides to follow for this?

Steam won't open (usually?)
I've not been using Linux for vrey long, but I'm using Ubuntu.
So yeah, steam won't open, I've literally reinstalled the whole operating system and it still won't open, but this morning I woke up to steam just open waiting for me for some reason? It still doesn't open normally.

having trouble trying to run Lost Judgment (Yakuza spinoff)
I'm on Linux Mint 22.2 Cinnamon with an NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU. I've been using Proton for running Windows-only games for a while and all of them run (mostly) fine except Lost Judgment.
so the issue I have is: the game launches, has audio, but does not render anything. I've tried multiple Proton versions over the course of weeks, ran numerous chats with GPT to troubleshoot but I just come up empty.
GPT pointed out the troublemaking line in the log as this:
vkd3d-proton:dxgi_vk_swap_chain_recreate_swapchain_in_present_task: Got 3 swapchain images.
the weirder thing is that it ran fine a couple of times, but for some reason just stopped rendering the visuals (including Steam overlay) regardless of fullscreen, borderless or windowed mode.
I ran it on Wine3D and it launched cleanly again, but was less responsive to inputs. I've tried everything I could and still can't seem to make it render anything on dxvk consistently.
I'm currently on the Denuvo lockout because of all the tinkering but if anyone has faced anything similar to this, please help me find a solution.
I was just about to try it on Proton 8 with the exact settings that made it run (once) on GE 10-17 (didn't work even once on Proton 9) when I reached the activation limit. so if that's the solution, ig there was no point to this post.

I want to install and run old games from myabandonware. However at the same time i am also worried about getting a virus to my PC or network in the process. Is bottles a good option to run old games in isolation from my other files and wifi?.
I use bazziteOS on the Legion go.

HARD VOID Early Access announcement Trailer!
With 1.5 years of development, HARD VOID will enter Early Access this October 2025. The expected development time until 1.0 is one year.
This project is a solo development journey, fully developed on Linux with C language and OpenGL, and includes native Linux support! You can try the demo on Steam and itch.io.
The Early Access will be a direct follow-up from the Demo version.
I wish to develop HARD VOID alongside player feedback to try new, wild, and experimental ideas. You can join the Official Discord server https://discord.gg/YbJjr3yuys or post in the Steam forums to suggest and discuss game content and features.

Kubuntu Adopter Wondering About the other distros.
I spent September trying out Bazzite, Pop!_OS, and finally got to Kubuntu. So far it is smoother to get things like new Vegas and Skyrim modding going. I like the familiar environment and I've developed a workflow.
Are there any distros I should consider before fully committing to Kubuntu?

Weird performance issue.
So, i use endeavouros and i do some lightgaming, atm playing silksong, stardew valley, and a few small games, nothing high performance. The thing is, a few weeks ago i notices my performance was dropping on prety much every aspect adn playing was impossible. I tried everything, downgrading mesa, vulkan-radeon. I broke my OS, fixed it, and nothing worked. After that i just said fuck it and deleted all my games and steam. Yesterday i installed steam and silksong again and it was working amazing, just like it used to, and like 24 hours later i started noticing the lag again while playing. What should i do?

Upgrading from Nvidia to AMD on Linux
Right now I’m dual booting Nobara and Windows and I’m planning to upgrade from an RTX 2060 6gb to an RX 9060 XT 16gb. I know that on windows, I have to remove the nvidia drivers then install the AMD drivers. I also know that the Linux kernel natively support AMD so I’m a little confused. Do I have to uninstall the nvidia drivers on Linux? And if I so, how?

Trying to run Old game on Linux
Years ago I had "Deer Hunter The 2005 Season" running on Linus using Wine. Honestly, it seemed to run better on Linux than on Windows. Fast forward to now. I have several laptops running Linux and with Windows 10 dying off I figured i might as well go full Linux. Deer Hunter kis thge only game I miss playing. I tried installing with Wine, Lutris, etc. and it won;t work. I get "could not init graphics". Why am I having some much trouble with this, does it need an old Wine version, or is there a simple way to do this? . Log file looks like this:
LOG file "Game.LOG" created in 10/11/25 19:50:10

MH wilds running at about half the FPS as windows
I am running MH Wilds on a fresh Bazzite install. I am new to Linux and don't know what I don't know. I checked the proton (experimental) and mesa version (25.2.1) and I think those are the latest and greatest.
I haven't done anything special for my gpu drivers, I have a 9070XT.
Any suggestions on where to start would be greatly appreciated.
For comparison, in windows the game sits at 60-72 FPS without FSR on high settings. In bazzite, it is sitting at 30-45 FPS with drops into the 20s.

Best way to replace console?
Hi everyone, I’ve gotten back into Linux. And I installed Bazzite so I could play games it runs really well out of the box was pretty impressed. One thing I want to do is replace my console as I use it as a media streamer instead of the TV’s awful ui. Is there a good Distro or apps I should look for to run Netflix, YouTube and all the streaming apps? I saw chimera OS but I have nvidia graphics card so that’s a no go.

so I installed win11 enterprise...
and it's really not that bad. there's no junk to get in the way. just a clean OS to build upon. the windows store isn't even installed. massgrave.dev might be worth looking into for anyone wanting to dual-boot for the few games that just don't quite work on Linux.
Don't get me wrong, I'm primarily on Linux but having a clean windows environment that I feel comfortable letting it update itself from time to time is nice. No ads, no copilot, no ad-sponsored games, nothing. Steam works as expected, though some games might complain about the missing xbox game bar but it's not required for play. ADHD users might be bothered by the popup though.
not sure about any potential privacy issues yet but it's gotta be better than the mainstream home and pro editions.
oh and works without secure boot and tpm 2.0. both enterprise and iot versions, despite what massgrave says. secure boot is not enabled on my desktop or laptop. :)
bonus points, windows is installed to my 2nd positioned nvme and did not clobber my rEFInd bootloader. nor did it overwrite grub on my single disk laptop.
- note: don't shrink btrfs. I think that broke my laptop's nix install. XD

Need help with Garry's mod
I've been trying to play gmod singleplayer, but the game crashed from time to time - firstly, when I tried to load maps, secondly - when I tried to spawn something.
Also, how critical would it be if I'm missing some dependancies
