Is linux good for gaming/streaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 11:59pm

I’m planning to start my streaming journey soon, but I’m a bit unsure whether Linux can efficiently handle both gaming and streaming tasks. If it’s capable, could you please recommend the most suitable Linux distribution that offers the best performance and stability for this purpose?

Switching to linux gaming just to dual boot into Windows anyway? What's the point?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 11:01pm

I am in the process (more like procastinaing) of switching to linux. Since I have many games I really enjoy with anticheat/kernel lvl anticheat, I need to dual boot to Windows (:puking face:). I don't mind those anticheats and their disgusting rootkits, however what I do mind is Microsoft. I want to UnMicrosoft Windows (that even Bill Gates would say, that's now just Windows and not Microsoft Windows.) I don't just want to simply "debloat" Windows and delete a bunch of system programs, I want to strip Windows so much that it is enough to play my games, keep anticheat and drivers intact. Calculator? Trash it. Microsoft Store? In the Trash. Telemetry? Not just minimal by setting it to 0, no, in the trash with it. Don't spy on my exact location by looking up what WiFi networks are around me, IP based location is good enough!
tldr:
My Question?
Is there a way to "OWN" Windows and not just "debloat" it? That doesn't break with any update (Running debloat every bootup is ok though.)? Making it more like unMicrosoft.

PS:
I don't mean to offend anyone (other than Microsoft), you can like Windows (even I do).
I don't hate Microsoft, I hate them in Windows, their behavior like "Too big to fail" and their (in my opinion) f**k consumers attitude. Their begging of "Please stop using Microsoft Products, we already broke them program after program for you."

I do realize this Post might not entirely fit into this sub reddit, if you know any better fitting one, PLEASE :sob: direct me to it. I am just desperate to get away from them as an operating system.
Delete this excuse of a post if neessary, just don't ban me. I will never post here again.

Mighty Switch Force running with Sound but no Video

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 10:46pm

Been recently messing around with this old Thinkpad, and while I know it’s not really something the thing you’d use for gaming, I’ve been trying out which older/indie games run on. I even got a handful, mainly 2D ones, to run!! At first, when I tried to launch games via Proton, they’d run but unplayably slow— but then I discovered that by adding “PROTON_USE_WIND3D=1 %COMMAND%” games would often become magically playable. Now, when I tried this with Mighty Switch Force the game loads with a black screen but audio plays and runs at normal speed. If I press buttons I hear the game responding, so it seems to work but not want to render the video for some reason. Now, I know that this is an odd issue that’s most likely down to the hardware or whatever, and most likely no one here ever had an issue like this or could easily replicate this— but I’m just so annoyed that I got this close to running this game on this silly laptop and it has an issue I’ve no idea how to solve. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Following is a rundown of the laptop’s system specs: ·Lenovo Thinkpad T400 ·Linux Mint 22.2 XFCE ·Kernel 6.14.0-33-generic ·CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 ·GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 ·RAM: 8GB Also, the Proton version I’ve tried include: Experimental, 9.0-4 and GE 10-17.

I’d include a screenshot, but it’d be just a black screen :V

ARC Raiders free server test this weekend

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 9:32pm

The game functioned on proton last Tech test after some hiccups. I’m assuming it’ll work fine enough because of the studios support for The Finals. Definitely worth trying out.

Generic Xbox Controller Issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 9:30pm

Hey people

I've got a Cosmic Byte Blitz controller that shows up as an Xbox One type controller on Windows and functions normally, with rumble and all plug n play.

However I'm having a lot of trouble getting jt to run on Linux. For one Rumble never works. That I can still live without, but for some reason inside some games(I tried Hollow Knight and Dark Souls Remastered), the controls are all messed up. Buttons are randomly mapped to others, and disabling or enabling Steam Input does not help at all. What's even weirder is, when using Steam Big Picture mode the controller works just fine, all buttons working just as they should.

Using lsusb the controller shows up as an Apple Inc. Gamepad when wired, and when using a dongle it's labelled as ShenWang something, can't recall exactly. However the same issues persist across both.

If anyone could help, it'd be very much appreciated as this is the only thing preventing me from switching back to Linux.

Thank you!

Edit: forgot to add, I was on Fedora 42 with Kernel 6.16. Also tried 6.14.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 8:52pm

Hey everyone! The latest version of Sands, my Dune-inspired roguelike, is now live! And as always, fully Linux-native (tested on Arch & Ubuntu).

🌀 New in v0.1.38:

  • Permadeath & Roleplay Modes – choose between a pure roguelike or a story-driven experience
  • Guild Bribe System – pay off the Spacing Guild to hide your ecological projects (or face raids and penalties)
  • Expedition Map Selector – pick your next journey visually, assess risk before committing resources
  • 11 New Encounters – spice blows, Harkonnen patrols, Fremen ceremonies, smuggler ambushes, and more
  • Fremen Language Integration – authentic Chakobsa terms like kaveh, bled, ichwan, woven into quests
  • Visual Overhaul – better combat effects, explosions, and atmosphere
  • Dynamic Scenes & QoL Fixes – improved UI, entity interactions, and auto-discovery

🌵 About the game:

Sands is a pixel-art desert survival roguelike inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune.
You play a Fremen, balancing survival, ecology, and secrecy while navigating politics and the endless desert.

Playing Portal Natively on a MacBook Pro (Mid-2014)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 8:48pm

Hello! I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my MacBook Pro (Mid-2014) and bought Portal. Unfortunately, the game crashes after the menu so, I tried adding "-vulkan" to the launch options, and now the game won't even launch. Using Proton with Wine3D makes everything darker and runs poorly. I created a partition for Windows and the game works great in there, but Microsoft Windows is awful and I'd much prefer to use Linux. Is there anything I can do to get Portal to run natively? Thanks in advance :)

can't launch megabonk

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 7:11pm

Pretty much every game i have tried has worked without issues so far until now. Megabonk won't launch no matter what proton version i try. I didnt even get this error message until i tried proton-cachyos (native package). Used arch-update on cachyos to update everything (i do it regularly anyway). I have verified the game files through steam, also re-downloaded the game. Protondb has this game on platinum and the reviews there showed none has this issue.

I have Asus G15 AE laptop with 6800m (6700xt equivalent) on Cachyos. still new to linux in general and idk what to do next.

Edit: Tried the native first before trying the proton compatibility layers

Shaders cache giving me issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Oct 2025 - 6:58pm

So I have this old build laptop that I installed arch linux on and am using to play old and indie games mostly on it. I had just installed fallout new Vegas which is a pretty old game but it was running absolutely horribly. I went back lowered settings and noticed that my detected gpu in the game launcher is the Rx 5600 xt which is in my PC and not in the laptop. So could this be the reason? Did steam install shaders cache for a gpu that's not even there making my lag spike so bad. Like I can't even get into gun fights it gets laggy and stutters a lot. How can I solve this pls. Note: it ran fine when I had windows on this laptop.
