Going to flip one of my computers to Linux after work and need advice

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 10:22am

I have two PCs

1 9950X3D x 5090 2 9800x3D x 9070 XT

I want to experience Linus as a first timer and want to know which PC would have a better experience. I love playing older games and I’ve tried watching some videos and seen that Nvidia cards work well now, but do i need to do this on a dedicated drive and what kernel do you all recommend now? Is there something that looks similar to my Mac? (This is really what prompted my curiosity)

Full screen? More like half screen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 7:35am

So. I downloaded battle.net with proton litus or whatever (im new and forgot the name my bad) but it worked after alota struggling i had sc2 open and running. I went away to make food then it went into sleep. Then i came back everything was closed so i re opened it trying to find sc2 i couldnt so i re installed it. Then my full screen was fucked. Full screen windowed puts my screen locked in the middle of it. Windows puts it top left, and fullscreen puts it on the fulll left side in the middle leaving the right side empty. Not a black screen but just a whole to my wallpaper.

Any free native and non-native games to try on Steam for Fedora?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 7:15am

I have an X1 Carbon gen 6 that uses i7 8550u and 16 LPDDR3. I use Fedora as the main OS for this laptop and wanted to try if games would run on it without any issues. I actually tried playing L4D2 and CS2 before on Fedora with this laptop but for some reason, they didn't worked smoothly even tho they are both native Linux games. L4D2 crashes when joining a server or starting a single player campaign and my guess is because of the mods that I use. CS2 is choppy and crashes after a few minutes of playing and turning down its graphics settings makes the game freeze so I can't adjust it at all.

Any games would do as long as it's free and is not graphic demanding. Tho, I haven't tried Half-life yet which went free (idk which Half-life) before so I might try it later. PS2 emulation runs fine but since it's an old laptop with a low powered cpu, I can't run most PS2 games smoothly.

Yes, I use the Steam compatibility feature and set it to Proton Experimental.

Sync Compatdata AppID?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 7:13am

Hello,

I've had my deck for a while now and I switched to mint a few months ago. I have some GOG games that are installed on both devices and I wanted to know if there was a way to make them use the same compatdata appID, since for nonsteam games, the appID is random.

The usecase was mostly to make it easier to Syncthing/Decky Ludusavi while keeping the proton profile the exact same.

Anyone know if that's possible? If there is an alternative? Or if it's even useful?

Steam Permissions - Fedora

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 6:15am

I'm on Fedora with two DE on my system GNOME and KDE.

Steam (rpm version) works great and no issues on my first user (GNOME session) but I can't add another drive on steam for my second user (KDE session). When I add a drive, nothing is happening.

I tried using the flatpak version of steam and using flatseal to add permission but it's not working for both so resulted to using the rpm version. I think it's a permission issue.

I was hoping both user can access the same drive when I play games on steam.

What am I missing?

Can't download non-steam-games on my second hdd

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 5:25am

So, I know for a fact genshin is playable on linux mint, I've done it before.

However, I can't choose my HDD as installation path, at all.

For context: I have a 256 GB SSD (with linux on it) and a newly ext4 formatted 1 TB HDD that is mounted somewhere in /media....

I already have the issue that I need to add the drive anew to steam every time I plan to install a steam game on it, since I dont wanna clog up the space on my ssd. Quite annoying but atleast it works.

Now for genshin, I added the launcher as non-steam-game and run it with proton, all fine so far. However under installation path it opens this window that doesnt show my HDD at all...

sorry if this is painfully obvious, but I found nothing regarding it online.

Shout out to Arc Raiders

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 5:21am

I just want to take a minute to appreciate this game. A UE5 game that runs without hiccups or any faults on my Linux machine. Im using a 9070xt and using the RTXGI epic preset with medium on the rest and native 1440p. Getting 120fps+ !!. Now in was under the impression that RT took a huge hit on Linux but here that doesn't seem to be a huge factor. IDK what id get on W11 but this is definitely a good experience. I could even just do fsr4 quality and probably go above medium to still have high refresh. I'm still getting the hang of what the game is, but so far i really like the calm but intense at times vibe. Amazing game!

Help, my 3D app is fried~

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 4:22am

I was a windows user my entire life, so I'm a little bit of a newb.

My NVIDIA 3D application started birthing me problems when gaming. I simply used to open the GeForce app and disable it. Then, the game would flow amazingly well again.

I switched to Linux Mint Cinnamon and need help to disable the gpu 3d app when gaming.

I tried understanding how the NVIDIA settings work (the profiles) but I'm no expert and I'm already stressed for existing.

Driver: nvidia-driver-580-open (580.95.05-Ubuntu0.24.04.2) OS: Linux Mint 22.2 GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

Help, PLEASE. (sorry if bad english)

Please help with Bazzite: Amnesia the Bunker keeps crashing to desktop after loading the main menu (even though I'm using an AMD GPU, tried different Proton versions, and the game should work on Linux systems). Why is it doing this and how can I fix it?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 4:12am

I switched my PC OS to Bazzite months ago, and while it looks like most of my games run fine, Amnesia the Bunker keeps crashing after it loads the main menu. I tried different versions of Proton, but it doesn't seem to affect anything.

I mean, it should work on Linux systems. I recently installed it on my Steam Deck, and it boots up perfectly fine. Why Bazzite is having issues is beyond me.

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how to fix this?

FYI: I use an AMD Radeon 9070xt GPU, and an Intel core i7-14700kf CPU. I also use KDE.

Lossless Scaling Frame Gen on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 4:01am

Hey guys, I've been trying out some games on linux (cachy OS) and there's one game I'd like to play that has an FPS limit, when I played that game on windows I'd use Lossless Scaling's Frame Generation to up the frame to 144 hz (my monitor's refresh rate) and it did the job pretty well, with some visual bugs here and there but the smoothness made up for it imo.

I'd like to know if it works on linux or if there's an alternative to it, thanks :D

Audio glitches, skipping and rapid stuttering while in high CPU usage (mostly background tasks)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 3:21am

First of all: SORRY FOR THE HORRIBLE VIDEO QUALITY, MY CAMERA NEVER WANTED TO FOCUS and screen recording would've just made the performance much worse.

I've been dealing with this since I got this laptop. When I'm doing a CPU-intensive task like compilation and play a light game, or even when just listening to music, the high CPU usage would make the audio queue go wild and cause audio corruption like the one you can hear in the clip.

5 months already dealing with this.

For reference, in this clip I was compiling qt6-base in the background, but in my old computer this didn't make the sound start wildly glitching.

Specs:

Model: Asus Zenbook Pro 17
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX
iGPU: AMD Radeon 680M (the one the DE uses)
dGPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop (the one games like GD use)
RAM: 16 GiB
Display resolution: 2560x1440
Refresh rate: 165 Hz max. (VFR)

Desktop environment: Plasma 6.4.5 but happening all the way back to 6.3.5 (may 2025)
Graphical platform: Wayland
Distribution: Arch Linux - rolling
Kernel: 6.17.3 all the way back to 6.11 in both vanilla and zen versions
Audio controller: Cirrus Logic

Additional info:

65:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Radeon High Definition Audio Controller [Rembrandt/Strix] 65:00.5 Multimedia controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Audio Coprocessor (rev 60) 65:00.6 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 17h/19h/1ah HD Audio Controller submitted by /u/TechManWalker

How to use ENB for TES5 SSE on Linux (recently installed Nobara Linux)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 3:02am

Hello everyone! I've recently become a convert. I've been following this guide: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/91500 On how to mod skyrim on Linux. I want install ENB again, but the guide seems outdated on that front. There is no linux folder in the ENB download and it isn't clear to me what I need to do to make ENB series run on linux. Is there a more updated guide somewhere I can follow? Thanks.

Fsr 4 on 7900xt

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 3:02am

I just tried FSR 4 on my Radeon 7900 XT. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed already has recent enough Mesa drivers, and I’m using the RDNA 3 workaround command with FSR 4. The upgrade looks much better.

Borderlands 4 – With FSR 4, performance looks better than with FSR 3 on quality; all the ghosting and blurriness are gone.

Squad – Using the FSR 4 upgrade on Squad, I get around 65 – 85 FPS on Epic settings upscaled to 4K. With FSR 3 I can reach ~100 FPS, but in a game like Squad I find the compromise of lower FPS worth it because the blurriness is removed and it’s much easier to spot enemies at longer ranges. The only downside is that textures can take a bit longer to load.

Question for the community
For anyone who has tried FSR 4 on 7000‑series GPUs, what’s been your experience? (Both games use frame generation, and I’m using the required Proton build.)

Update DLSS presets for native games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Oct 2025 - 2:26am

So I know that for Proton games we can now use environment variables like DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_NGX_DLSS_SR_OVERRIDE_RENDER_PRESET_SELECTION=render_preset_latest to update to the latest DLSS preset. Is there anyway to do this for native games (e.g. the new Baldur's Gate 3 port)?
