Distro Migration

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 9:42pm

hi,I need to migrate from arch linux I am looking for a different linux system as I'm too stupid to use arch, I've enjoyed using linux and don't really wanna go back to windows as the performance gains from a lot of things on the same hardware that I wasn't getting on windows fro things like my creative software and some games I liked to play had major gains on my hardware like Minecraft.

id like a much easier to use distort with less reliance on the terminal, and preferably has a building "App Store".

hopefully I can find something to be my future OS otherwise I might Bite the bullet and going back to windows.

[The Elder Scrolls Online] Game freezes before character selection[Archlinux] [Steam]

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 9:01pm

Hello!

Well i have a problem with ESO on linux, yesterday i was able to play without any problem, but today, the game "freeze" before character selection. I even reinstalled it but still cant run this :c
i use Proton Hotfix, but 9.0.4 also don't work
+ this setting in steam PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
any ideas?

EDIT: It was probably due to Picom, after “killall picom” the game works normally (after a little more time of waiting).

Summary of my 3 months gaming* experience on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 8:09pm

First of all, I've never ever used Linux before. It was my first time using it and I hadn't even know what kind of problems are waiting to jump onto me. I just cluelessly installed Linux Mint as my main OS and hop into its world.

After some specific to my PC actions (such as scaling my VGA-0 output from 768p to 1080p) I installed GPU drivers, steam and related to my hobby software. And I'm lucky enough. There was almost none of soft that I lost by migrating to Linux.

But when I installed proton and some games from steam I encountered a lot of errors. Majority part of this errors was related to my old af GPU (Kepler architecture) so my first action was installing ProtonSarek (ofc only after hours of searching). This solved all problems except the greatest one.

"Out of video memory" exception can not be solved by software nor settings or launch options. And it hurts. Only because I'm using NVIDIA card I can't use part of my RAM for GPU memory like in Windows. It seems stupid why NVIDIA implemented "Shared memory" feature in Windows but not in Linux. And at the same time AMD cards doesn't have this problem at all. So the only solution is buying a new video card.

Because of lack of video memory some games are unplayable at all. Deep Rock Galactic throwing an error and crashing. CS2 freezes and locking my mouse so I can't use my PC. PoE is a stuttering hell (Infinite shaders loading while in action). And even some cut scenes are lost or jiggling (like in Library of Ruina). This all happens even then I run games in 720p so 2 GB of Vram is garbage. I've never thought before how much of RAM was used by my GPU.

But all this errors occurs only while I'm playing. Blender, Godot, Rider, VSCode, Aseprite, OBS, PNGTuber, Kdenlive and Audacity are perfectly works in Linux. I can't even say is there any difference between Windows and Linux while I'm using these soft.

And so... What can I say about Linux? It's a very interesting adventure. It's unique on it's own and I having fun worthlessly spending my time on searching info that will help solve my problems. It seems that Linux itself is a game for me now.

P.S.: Yes, I doesn't see any difference in game performance.

installed Mint along side windows but after everything was setup, linux or windows messed boot loader up ...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 7:22pm

So, I finally installed Mint along with Windows, but with Linux on a USB SSD external drive. Everything appeared fine, but when I went to reboot into Windows (unplugged Linux drive), Windows couldn't find locations for Windows or Linux.

i noticed I had two boots for Windows 10 and win 11 and no Linux, so I went to msconfig to delete the extra boot line and got it to find and boot Windows, but it won't boot to Linux when it's plugged into USB ...

I did finally get Mint to run with a very old grub 2 boot disk I still had in my junk drawer, but I don't want to go thru the boot disk each time I want to play with it ....

So I think what I need to do is re-create my boot environment somehow, so basically, if Linux is plugged in it would boot to Mint, but if it's not there, then it would default to Windows and start without me having to mess with boot disks ...

Does anyone know how I can achieve this easily? I assume I need to recreate my boot variables somehow.

Also is there a better sub for stupid Linux questions, or is this sub fine for stupid questions?

thx for any feedback, if any ...

I need help with CSS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 6:38pm

I installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS a few days ago and when I run the CSS, it appears that it is running and after a few seconds it closes and never opens the game. As I understand it, Valve games are native to Linux, so they do not require Proton. I have already tried other games (CS1.6, HL1 and HL2) and they work as if nothing had happened.

Someone knows why this happens and how I can solve it? Maybe it's a very beginner's problem haha, idk

Gaming on NixOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 6:29pm

Hey everyone,

I'm currently using CachyOS and it's been a pretty solid experience for gaming so far. That said, I've been thinking about making the switch to NixOS, mainly out of curiosity and a desire to learn something new. Also having all my system as a configuration files sounds very tempting.
I'm wondering how well gaming holds up on NixOS in general, did you encounter any problems while using NixOS?

Would love to hear about your setups and any pros or cons you've run into. Thanks in advance!

Which Capture Cards work well with Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 5:51pm

Hey fellow Linux Gamers (and content Creators) I'm looking for a new Capture Card which works well in a Dual Boot Environment. I have 3 different in mind.

  1. The Rode Streamer X
  2. AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1
  3. Avermedia Live Gamer 4K

The Most Important Thing for me is that I can use it with Linux and OBS. I don't need extra Software maybe only volume Up and down should work if I buy the Streamer X. If you have some better suggestions fell free to share.

DoI even need to explain to them or is this a rage bait?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 4:54pm

It happened in one of the Motortown : Behind the wheel community servers. The servers crashed and I was just wondering if the owner (happy ghast pfp) runs linux machine since they are (as far as I heard) proven to be more stable.

Last Epoch, finally got convinced to try it... And then...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 4:51pm

Ok, so i finally got around to trying out "Last Epoch", because all the other RPGs suck ass, have bombed, or are just in an awful state. PoE is dying. PoE 2 isn't anywhere near, a fun game. Diablo 3 is gasping its last dying breath. Diablo 4 was still born. And so on... So... "Last Epoch" is what i decided on...

Now, running Nobara 41, and been super blessed with this distro, because i am a gamer. - I've also had issues, because it is Linux. Goes with the territory, i guess. Right?
So, about half my library on Steam, plays for 30-45 minutes, and then starts to stutter real bad. Like the FPS drops to around 20, give or take a couple.
And that bothered me greatly, until i wrote a post, balling my eyes out about it, and a kindhearted soul presented me with a fix.

Ad this to the Steam "Launch option" :

LD_PRELOAD=”” %command%

Now, i'm a gamer, not a coder, nor even someone particularly smart. So, i have no clue what this command does, but lo and behold. Stutter went away, so what do i care... Right? It works... And all games, that have given me stutters, have since been fixed with this command. Genius really, if ya ask me.

But fast forward to today.

I buy "Last Epoch" and install it. Nothing.
I start up the game. Perfect.
I play for 30-45 minutes. Stutter.
Fuck. I forgot the command.
So, i exit the game. I enter the command.
And i start up the game again. - NOTHING?
That's a first. I remove the launch option, and try again.
Start game. Nothing? WTF?
Steam says "Game running". Even 20 min later, and still nothing happens.
So, i stop the game manually. And for the next hour, i try different versions of with or without launch option.
I try restarting steam. I try restarting my computer.

And for some unknown, godforsaken reason... Now it just doesn't wanna start up again...
Steam keeps saying "Game running". Yet, nothing appears on my monitor. What the hell ?

Does anyone have a clue, what is going on?
And potentially have a fix to my issue?

Sufficed to say... I'm a gamer, so at BEST an average Linux user, and that's giving myself high praise... Nah, i'm a novice...
So in case, your answer or questions require technical terms... Kindly dumb it down, so my brain (As it is) has a chance to keep up...

Thanks.

Known issues of Nvidia with VKD3D - Windows vs. Linux - Why is Baldurs Gate 3 different?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2025 - 2:55pm

Hi

We basically all know about the 15-20% performance drop when comparing Windows performance vs Linux performance for Nvidia RTX cards and running DX12 (and according to my data DX11) titles, on Linux with VKD3D (resp. DXVK).

Even Nvidia is aware of the issue: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/directx12-performance-is-terrible-on-linux/303207 (apparently it's bug id 5131298).

So I've acquired a RTX 5060 Ti and wanted to see this myself and I saw that Baldurs Gate 3 does show no issues of that sort - no matter whether running Vulkan or DX11.

So what's up with that? What are your thoughts?
