Last update has crippled my computer, help please?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 09:20

I only just saw that you're not supposed to use sudo apt upgrade- oh well. Terminal doesn't open, half the functions freeze the machine, the manual off function hardly works, can only reset through emergency shutdown. Help?

DualSense controllers experiencing Bluetooth issues, latency

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 08:32

Hey all

TL;DR: controllers are laggy as hell playing non-intensive game, linux + Intel A210 card, diagnosing has gotten me nowhere.

I've picked up a small form PC, the Minisforum UM890 Pro, which I intend to use as a more powerful replacement for my SteamDeck which I mostly play docked on my living-room 4K TV. Generally the experience is great, I can play HellDivers2 at 4K 30fps with pretty decent graphics as long as I use a wireless keyboard & mouse, but I'm having an absolute nightmare with bluetooth.

I replaced the default Mediatek Bluetooth/Wifi card with an Intel AX210 since I heard the Mediatek cards have a lot of problems on linux and the Intel cards tend to be pretty solid with the latest kernels. Regardless of which card I use, I'm seeing really poor input performance from my 2 DualSense Wireless controllers connected via bluetooth. And my bluetooth keyboard, which also seems quite laggy while typing.

I've tried a few different gaming distros, and still get the same problem throughout. I've settled on the Handheld Edition of CachyOS since it is Arch-based (both have great wikis) and isn't a read-only OS.

The system has been tweaked for performance: despite being a "handheld" build this system is plugged-in, so I don't really care that much about power saving. CPU/GPU and Bluetooth have all been set to high performance with suspend/downclocking off. I've also disabled Wifi (from settings, nothing "deeper") to reduce overhead on the card.

The problem I'm seeing is that the controllers (usually, but not always, player 2) will be extremely laggy. The game I'm testing with isn't particularly stressful for the system: Stardew Valley. But I'll see issues where the second player is slow to respond, or sometimes both players continue running for a second after the joystick is left alone. Accuracy is terrible. Everything feels really sluggish compared to the SteamDeck. I'm also noticing recently that connecting the controllers can take 5 or 6 attempts each. The controllers aren't very far away from the system, about 2 meters, maybe 3. Nothing between the system and the controllers either.

As a reference, the SteamDeck never had any problems working with these two controllers, and has always been fast and responsive with the devices, including the initial connection.

Everything is fine if I connect the controllers via USB, but the cables get in the way and somewhat defeats the purpose.

I've been running evhz to try and diagnose the problem, and the results are all over the place. Sometimes I'm seeing 100-300Hz connections, sometimes up to 15000Hz. Usually one is very high and the other very low. There is no consistency. When I checked on the SteamDeck, both controllers would typically show ~900Hz consistently.

In case it helps, here's the kernel parameters I have set (I'm ok with the security tweaks):

zswap.enabled=0 nowatchdog mitigations=off spectre_v2=off nopti sysrq_always_enabled=1 usbcore.autosuspend=-1 amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff amdgpu.dpm=1 amdgpu.msi=1 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 iommu=pt transparent_hugepage=always preempt=full threadirqs btusb.enable_autosuspend=N bt_coex_active=0

And here's some additional system info:

OS: CachyOS x86_64 Host: EliteMini Series (1.0) Kernel: Linux 6.14.4-2-cachyos-deckify Display (SAMSUNG): 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz (as 2560x1440) in 85" [External] CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS (16) @ 5.26 GHz GPU: AMD Phoenix3 [Integrated] Memory: 1.91 GiB / 23.24 GiB (8%) Swap: zram, 0 B / 8.00 GiB (0%) Disk (/): 387.81 GiB / 929.51 GiB (42%) - btrfs Locale: en_US.UTF-8

Any help would be appreciated, I've been bashing my head against a wall with this for 2 months now!

Any racing games work with Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 08:12

I've been itching to play a good racing game and it seems none of them work on Linux without tinkering and I've done it all and it hasn't work and making me question just going to windows again.

I've tried Forza 5 and it doesn't launch at all I get file path to far and tried to change the file length and it installed the game again so I refunded cause it would take 10 hours.

Tried assetto corsa and just won't even open after trying to use protonge for a few hours

Need for speed games are all ea launcher and that hardly works on windows

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or are racing games not the move on Linux

And if someone got any games working let me know what you did

Migrated from PopOS 22.04 to Fedora 42. Framerate went down by half? AMD 9070 XT

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 07:40

Hey all,

So playing around, I decided I would try distro hopping. I had a very strange problem when I went to Redhat where in both KDE and Gnome, setting my refresh rate to 240hz caused the screen to flicker once in a while. Alright, so I set it to 120hz. Booted up Clair Obscur and on "Epic" settings, instead of my 50-60fps, I was getting 20-30. Weird.

For giggles I installed Cosmic. I could select 240hz, but I still get a screen flickering issue, very randomly (much less frequently, but still happened). Happened in Manjaro as well after I updated to kernel 6.14, so I think it's a kernel issue. Anyway, booted up Steam and I'm still stuck at 20-30fps.

Only thing I can think of that is different is I'm running Kernel 6.14.x now. I could only run 6.13.8 on Pop 22.04 because some dependencies weren't updated that I didn't want to mess with. Also, maybe, it's because I'm on the btrfs file system instead of EXT4?

My experience with Linux..

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 06:59

Hello guys,

So today marks the 2 months of me using Linux as a daily driver and no dual-booting. My distro of choice was Nobara. After installing it the first cliff I had to climb was configuring my WiFi driver of choice, not the outdated kernel driver that gives me 2mbps of speed. For an experienced user, this would take like probably 5-10 minutes, but for me it took 2-3 hours with the help of AI, as I did not understand what I was doing at the time. When I updated my kernel, the same outdated driver came back all of the sudden but I fixed it without AI as I learned from last time. I had some issues with CS2. I was told it ran better under Proton, but in my case it did not even start. Tried several versions of Proton but no success. When I ran it natively, setting up the resolution I am playing with (1280x1024 4:3), couldn't set it up to be fullscreen and ran it in Fullscreen windowed mode. When running other Single player games I had no trouble or performance issues, it's just that I am more of a multiplayer guy myself. I am not here to talk bad about Linux, its the opposite, I really respect the OS and it's users. It's incredible what the community has built, but for me it's just not there yet. (While I was typing this post my WiFi driver blacked out I am not even kidding you).

Quest 3s Inside-Out Body Tracking?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 06:59

Is there any Linux PCVR software that supports receiving Quest 3S's Inside-Out Body Tracking data?

At the moment I simply use a GPU passthrough Windows 11 VM with Virtual Desktop on it, and it does the job but I feel like the PC latency could be way better if it was running natively on Linux.

As far as I know there was a while ago an ALVR nightly build that supported this, but I couldn't find any other info on it really.

Having an issue with Bazzite, solutions or recommendations?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 06:41

I've been using Bazzite for a few months now, and it's been great for the most part except for one bug; my PC will crash sometimes when playing a game. I'll get static wires (idk what they're called) on my main monitor, and a black screen on my second monitor and my computer will be unresponsive. Is there any way to fix this? If not, can I switch to another distro to fix this? I was thinking of trying Fedora KDE because it supports HDR which is something I want. I have a 9800X 3D and 9070 XT btw.

application to install runners like Wine 10 into lutris.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 06:26

I just lost my install in a foolhardy upgrade to Kubuntu 25 from 24. I had an application on my old install that I found in discover that would download and setup runners like wine 10. It made it easy and I was able to run games in lutris in wine 10 vs the packed in 9 and 8.whatever. Anyone know what this might have been?

Help me play RDR2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 06:22

Yes, I'm one of the guys who switched to Linux after PewDiePie's video. I straight-up jumped into Arch. I'm learning, and it's fun. God, I should've switched to Linux a long time ago!

I tried launching RDR2 through Steam, but nothing happens. I click "Play", the button changes to "Stop" and then it switches back to "Play" again. Sometimes I get the "building shaders" message, but the game still doesn't launch. I've tried different Proton versions and tried tweaks from ProtonDB, but nothing works.

HELP! I'm a noob, please!

Other games like RE4 work fine when opened through Wine.

Overwatch 2 V-Sync broken after working for months just fine?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 05:43

On linux mint with an AMD 7800 XT, everything was working fine, idk why but when I have vsync enabled everything feels smoother and more responsive than with it off and 600 frames. Idk what happened but I opened it up recently and it just feels buggy and laggy, the latency is terrible with or without it on.

Ive already tried the disabling steam overlay and compositor turned off for fullscreen apps, my theory is its not really being launched in fullscreen even though it says it.

I have tried every proton and every possible fix but my latency stays at 5-20, unplayable rn and its just itching my brain that I cant get it working again.

Has anyone else ran into this recently?

(Every other games vsync works correctly and feels smooth like butter only overwatch is giving me issues)

Does kernel anti cheat function on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 05:24

I know NOTHING about Linux but I want to try a distro out soon. And I apologize because this is probably a really common question. I wonder about games like Helldivers 2 with a kernel level anticheat, how does it work with Linux? Does it even access the kernel at all, preventing the vulnerability issues that the access can create? Does it depend on the distro? Thanks.

Oblivion Remastered frame gen

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 05:23

Since day 1 this option has remained greyed out and unchangeable on Linux, but I've been playing it on windows 10 for about half the time and left the option turned on. Somehow it moved over to Linux and it also works, though I can't turn it off.

This only happened recently, before it was going back to being turned off on Linux whenever I switched from windows, the only difference was that today I had to manually copy my save files from windows to Linux since steam wasn't syncing it so maybe that's why this specific option moved over.

Expedition 33 problems - graphical bugs on Arc GPU maybe

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Mai 2025 - 05:18

I'm having graphical errors in Claire Obscur: Expedition 33. When the campaign starts, I see a completely red screen for a good 30 seconds, then after that the cutscene plays (an in-game cutscene). In this cutscene the flowers appear screwed up, like in the gameplay screenshot below. It also locked up my system one time when I alt-tabbed (but is no longer doing that now).

https://preview.redd.it/c00k33cuhhye1.png?width=2559&format=png&auto=webp&s=b10df0aa9eb1e438e66249b977a50baf08c2cf00

I run an Intel Arc A750 GPU, which is known to work with the game (and there's even a user on Proton DB reporting the game works for them using it).

I've tried Proton 9.0.4 and Experimental. No other proton versions were reported on protonDB. And the game has a platinum rating.

I'm on latest Mesa 25.0.4-1 on Arch Linux.

https://preview.redd.it/v407cmn3ihye1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=08176b08d41aa03648567134cc3a9d77ddf11777

The game's graphics settings seem a bit restrictive:
This TSR setting cannot be changed. Scaling Mode can be Low Medium High or Epic (which also changes Resolution scale but the scale itself cannot be edited).

https://preview.redd.it/m3poffxcihye1.png?width=1099&format=png&auto=webp&s=76651160de0c6f423c5583c6d39c14e55a0d2a3e

The rest of the settings are pretty normal.

Let me know if there's anything else I can try. Not sure why I'm having issues when it's rated so high on ProtonDB.
