Steam web helper process going crazy on the cpu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Jun 2025 - 6:00pm

I wonder if I can block it, that thing is eating up to 1 full core of cpu time at times.

It gets recreated whenever I kill it.

Why is Subnautica so glitchy?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Jun 2025 - 5:39pm

I'm getting weird glitches all over Subnautica.

This is just one example. There's also weird rectangles on walls when shining a light on them that disappear as you get closer, Level geometry unloading on Aurora, and some artifacts around creatures, glitching fast, can't describe it.

Here's the rest of the examples:

There's other glitches that i didn't bother to record.

I've played Subnautica on Linux before, i've never seen this. I have some mods, but mostly QoL stuff and such, and i played with mods before, it wasn't glitchy. I also tried multiple Proton versions, they all behave the same.

Some other games i tried aren't glitchy either.

CachyOS, Plasma Wayland.

Are there any CPU coolers with screens that can be customized on Linux? Is it also possible physically swap out the screen and replace it without touching the actual cooler?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Jun 2025 - 5:29pm

I currently have a THCC Thermalright cpu cooler. The led screen it comes with can be customized with its app on Windows. However, I recently moved over to Linux, where the CPU screen cannot be customized or displayed (not without a virtual machine being left on, which would take up more power and heat).

While I'm not obsessing over this, I am curious about CPU cooler screens being customizable on Linux. Are there any out there?

Is it also possible to physically swap out the screen whilst leaving the actual cooler alone?

SteamApi_Init() failed.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Jun 2025 - 4:18pm

I encountered this issue while using this build with WOW64 enabled. I now strongly suspect that WOW64 is the cause. Has anyone else run into a similar problem?

The symptoms of this issue include: the game repeatedly trying to launch Steam even though Steam is already running; in-game DLCs being marked as not owned; and the game failing to launch with errors like SteamAPI_Init() failed appearing in the game logs.

Switching from Steam flatpak to ditro pacakge

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Jun 2025 - 10:51am

I currently run Steam's flatpak version on my system (Fedora 42 KDE), it often takes a few seconds to "un-minimize" and sometimes completely crashes being unable to kill and bugging system shutdown/reboot. I think using the distro package version (dnf/rpm) would prevent those but I was wondering how the transition from flatpak to system package would go. Will it be able to keep games and data files and re-use them with the other version, does it delete everything or will it keep files but not use them because they don't use the same path ? What is the cleanest way to transition ? Thanks in advance !
