Steam (Flatpak) what Mesa version is used and how often is it updated ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 11:07pm

Hi

In my search on why my HDR picture quality is all washed out, I was made aware that I needed mesa version 25.1

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1mn942x/anybody_using_hdr_on_fedora_kde_wayland_protonge/

And to be more specific 25.1 needed to be updated inside the steam flatpak somehow

As my system Is updated to the newest version possible I cannot do anything more than sit and wait for the Mesa version inside Steam Flatpak to get updated to 25.1

-------------------------------

I have done a command in the terminal

flatpak list | grep Mesa flatpak list | grep Mesa

and I got this

flatpak list | grep Mesa
Mesa org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default 25.0.7 23.08 system
Mesa (Extra) org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default 25.0.7 23.08-extra system
Mesa org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default 25.1.3 24.08 system
Mesa (Extra) org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default 25.1.3 24.08extra system
Mesa org.freedesktop.Platform.GL32.default 25.1.3 24.08 system
Mesa (Extra) org.freedesktop.Platform.GL32.default 25.1.3 24.08extra system

-------------------------------

Non the wiser I guess that the top one 25.0.7 is the one used inside Steam flatpak

can anybody tell me how often Steam Flatpak is updated to the newest version ?

and also if it is the 25.0.7 is the Mesa version inside Steam flatpak ?

thanks

Weird steam behavior (Running Kubuntu)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 10:42pm

hardware is as follows

5600x3d
6700 xt

Dual monitors. main is 3440x1440 at 240hz and the second is 4k at 60hz

I am running kubuntu (i disabled snaps). I got the flatpack version of steam.

What happens is when my steam friends join games it will show up on my second monitor in the bottom right hand corner. I am totally at a loss on what is causing this because i went though the options and everything seems alright and my monitor settings i am sure are right.

Any idea what might cause this?

Transition from Win 10 to a Linux Distro question/tip/advice

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 9:53pm

As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches, I’m wondering which Linux distro would be the best/most compatible for my laptop. I usually run emulators like Dolphin, PCSX2, and DuckStation on it. My laptop specs are: i5-8265U, 8GB DDR4 RAM, Intel UHD 620 graphics, and a 512GB NVMe SSD.

Missing or low resolution icon

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 8:59pm

Guys I have a problem with some icons of mine (mainly games) that does not have the right resolution or it is even missing, so I have been searching around this problem and its a issue with more than 10 years on steam. Is there a way to automatically download the icon for steam games? SGDBoop does not work for app menu (GNOME) icons, only work for steam in-app icons.

GameSir-G7 idle disconnect

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 8:23pm

I'm running debian sid and purchased a wired usb game controller for gaming.

The controller configures fine when plugged in and works using lutris flatpak without issue.

When not in use, it constantly disconnects and reconnects:

I'm pretty sure this is an idle timeout issue as I can stop this behavior by running the System Settings joystick control or 'cat /dev/input/event11 > /dev/null'.

Any help appreciated as I prefer to leave this plugged in.

Steam Not Downloading Linux Version of Game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 8:19pm

Picked up Backpack Hero on Steam last week with plans to play or on my ROG Ally X running Bazzite. When I went to copy a backed up save l, I saw that the Windows version had been Installed. I've tried everything to make Steam download the Linux version but am having no luck. Is there a way to force Steam to download the Linux version of a game?

A Couple Questions about Mint

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 7:37pm

I have switched to Linux (Mint) for all of my home computers aside from my main gaming PC. I like Mint just fine and can do everything I need to do at home on it so far.

I have two questions:

  1. Will a live image give me a good idea of Linux performance for games? I want to test things out with a USB before making the plunge.

  2. Is there a certain distro, DE, etc. that is going to give me a better/worse experience targeting games at 1080p/60? Any reason not to use Mint or to use a certain flavor? I have an AMD 5600X and 6600XT if it matters.

All games are stored on disks separate from my Windows boot drive right now. Most were GOG or in standalone installers. I would plan to mostly run these through Steam/Proton.

Alan wake 2 heroic launcher game resolution issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 7:19pm

Hi, guys! I'm new to gaming on Linux and I had some issues. I used the heroic game launcher, and while the game launches alright and everything, there's a bug where I can't change the resolution of my game. Im trying to do so to get more frames and also because my computer for some reason allows me to select a higher resolution than my monitor (1440p) which is where the game resolution locks itself to (4k), hence my need to lower it.

[Fix / Solved] Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, black flickering at 240hz

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 11 Aug 2025 - 6:49pm

A while ago I decided to make the switch to Linux, and it was a horrid experience, plagued with compatibility issues. This post is aimed at those that want to make the switch. I hope this will help some people out there. I spent an unfortunate amount of time on figuring out this, and I think no one else should have to.

[The issue]:

When enabling VRR at 240hz, the monitor would intermittently turn black for a moment. The issue would occur faster when moving windows or stuff happens on the screen, rendering the experience unusable.

[The cause]:

Either a lack of or an incorrectly provided EDID file causes Linux to not know how to handle the input provided. The G9 uses something called Display Stream Compression. I would assume that this tech is somewhat foreign to Linux and it not being recognized could be the root problem, though I am not certain of that nor am I committed to put any further research into it.

[The solution]:

The basic idea is to extract a working EDID file from a Windows installation, import it into Linux and set it up to load on boot.

Step 0: Retrieve a functional EDID.bin file from Windows

To extract the EDID file, you can either follow a sequence of cmd commands or use one of the third party tools available out there. If you choose the former, you can ask ChatGPT for the lines of code. I did so as well, and it took about 5~10 minutes till I had the exported EDID file on a USB stick. Any premade tool out there should work too.

If your Monitor is of the following model you may use my EDID file which will be provided here. Though I suggest you generate your own one when possible.

Model: S49CG954SU
Model Code: LS49CG954SUXEN
Type No.: S49CG954S

Step 1: Copy the EDID file to a newly made edid folder.

sudo mkdir -p /lib/firmware/edid
sudo cp /path/to/your/samsung_edid.bin /lib/firmware/edid/

Step 2. Find out what port your Monitor uses:

xrandr --listmonitors

DP-3 in my case.

Step 3: open the grub editor

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Step 4: append the following to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

drm.edid_firmware=DP-3:edid/samsung_edid.bin

Consider that your port may not be DP-3. Adjust accordingly and the final line of code should look a little something like this.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet splash drm.edid_firmware=DP-3:edid/samsung_edid.bin'

Hit Ctrl + S and Ctrl + X to save and exit.

Step 5: Update and rebuild

sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg

sudo dracut --force --install /lib/firmware/edid/LC49G95.bin /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

Step 6: reboot

sudo reboot

After having completed the steps, the monitor should perform up to spec without a hitch.

Depending on what Linux Distro you use, the steps will likely vary, while the general outline will remain the same. If you are on Arch, Debian, etc. you may consult ChatGPT to convert the Fedora based terminal prompts to match your distro.
