How well does nvidia GPU’s like 3090 ti run on Nobara

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 11:05pm

I really wanted to build a full amd pc build with a 9800x3d and a 9070 xt just for Linux but at the moment I don’t have the exact amount of money I need to afford it so I’ll probably have to save up more money and get a job to earn more, but presides that the reason I’m here is rather than just waiting to eventually build the pc I figured for the mean time, I can dual boot with windows on my current pc but it has a 3090 ti which is a great gpu but I know nvidia is not as good compared to amd on Linux and os I’m planning to use is Nobara which seems to be very good for gaming, I should also mention that I did dual boot my pc with Linux before but I was with Linux mint cinnamon but I was getting worse performance there then I do with windows 11, so my question is will dual booting Nobara with a 3090 ti and 11900k be a good idea as a temporary solution until I have enough money to build the other pc I want?

Steam Issues On New Linux Mint Install.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 11:00pm

I just switched my gaming PC from Windows 10 to Linux Mint. This is my second install after I have ran Linux Mint on my laptop for a couple months now. When I launch steam, sometimes it runs impeccably. Other times it crashes, and then just runs in the background. During this time, all neccesary proccesses such as the runtime and launcher service, and pretty much the entire app runs, yet I cannot actually open and control the application on my screen, instead I just have it shown on my panel. In order to close it, I have to kill the proccess, as it's completely unresponsive. Is this due to a issue with the installation? I downloaded the client from their website directly, I did not run a installation command. Could this be due to me using the wrong drivers? I chose the open kernel 570 nvidia gpu drivers when prompted to download drivers. I have a Nvidia GeForce 3080, AMD Radeon 5700X3D, and Corsair Vengeance 32gb DDR4 memory. When I can I hope i can perhaps run a application report on the terminal when I have access to my pc again tonight.

what does proton+steam do different than proton+bottles?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 10:00pm

I'm trying to understand more about the wine/proton/etc landscape. Right now I'm trying to make Heroes of Might and Magic V work.

On steam, I create a new prefix for the game through the UI, the usual way, and it runs. I can change the resolution.

I have another prefix set up with Proton-GE 27, created through bottles. When I run the game and try to change resolution, game crashes with:

info: D3D9DeviceEx::ResetSwapChain:

info: Requested Presentation Parameters

info: - Width: 1920

info: - Height: 1080

info: - Format: D3D9Format::X8R8G8B8

info: - Auto Depth Stencil: true

info: ^ Format: D3D9Format::D24S8

info: - Windowed: false

info: - Swap effect: 1

info: Setting display mode: 1920x1080@60

info: Setting display mode: 1920x1080@60

info: DXVK: Using 12 compiler threads

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

Major opcode of failed request: 155 (NV-GLX)

Minor opcode of failed request: 43 ()

Serial number of failed request: 10418

Current serial number in output stream: 10423

Which, as far as I can tell, doesn't say anything more than "wrong parameters for this call to change resolution". I'm kind of lost. What could I investigate? And, generally, what would steam do that wouldn't happen when running a game with a Bottles prefix?

Temporarily lock cursor in a monitor.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 9:51pm

So I want to play a game (for example katana zero), but the cursor keeps going to my second monitor and when I press something there it just minimizes the game (also a thing I would want to fix).
So I wanted to like know a way to lock the cursor in the current monitor so I wouldn't need to worry about this, preferably with like a keyboard shortcut.

I use arch btw.

  • I have tried: gamescope --force-grab-cursor &command& (and yes I did install gamescope using yay -S gamescope)
  • dualscreen-mouse-utils, it didn't even launch.

How does Sunshine perform with an AMD RX 9070 XT?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 9:43pm

I'm in the market for a new GPU and I'm cautiously curious about the AMD RX 9070 XT.

One thing I don't read much about, is how Sunshine performs with it. On my current NVidia GPU (RTX 2070 Super) it performs and looks really well. I've always read that AMD's encoder isn't quite as good as NVEnc.

Has anyone tried this combo yet, and does it perform well? Does it impact the in-game performance much?

Thanks in advance!

Nvidia and multi monitor setup (fps loss)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 9:32pm

Hi Everyone!

I've switched to linux this week, currently running cachy os, arch based.

I've got a 4090rtx notebook that I use with an external monitor for work and to have some background video while gaming.

For some reason, whenever I play a game with more than 1 monitor enabled, my fps halves, if I run for example, Marvel Rivals with only one monitor, I get around 100-110fps. As soon as I run it with 2 or 3 monitors, I barely get 50.

Anyone knows what could be provoking this, or if it's a known issue with nvidia?

Thanks in advance!

aliasing on nvidia cards on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 8:59pm

I would like to know what the anti-aliasing is like in your games with Nvidia, because for me I feel that even with ATI anti-aliasing activated with fxaa, taa etc., the game has very strong anti-aliasing, what is it like for you?

Using a vm instead of duelbooting for windows games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 8:51pm

Are you able to use a vm for online windows only games? I really don't want to duelboot, so if anyone has experience trying that, did it work?

My brand new Ubuntu LAPTOP!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 8:11pm

It's not really brand new. It's 12 years old. It originally had Windows 8 on it. My dad got it way back in 2012 for his job at Captech. His company ended up letting him keep it and it sat in his closet for 13 years. I found it and set up the latest version of Ubuntu on it. For anyone curious its got a 128GB Sata HDD, a GT 730M with 1 GIGABYTE of VRAM, Intel Core i7-4700MQ 4 x 2.4 - 3.4 GHz and 16 gigs of DDR3. Minecraft 1.21.5 runs at a pretty stable 60fps with some dips. Using proton on steam I get around 30fps on Borderlands 2, half life 2 runs well, SPORE runs GREAT which is awesome, and enter the gungeon runs well too. I have a handful of emulators spanning from the GBA to the PS2 that all run great TOO! Ubuntu itself is also a very smooth experience on this laptop. The most exciting part of this is that I set up my own minecraft server on it, the 16 gigabytes of RAM and not terrible CPU really lends itself well to that. For anyone curious the laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad T540p.

Too much drama and paranoia whenever an AC issue occurs in a supported game.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2025 - 7:49pm

I saw a post from a guy yesterday pretty much having a "meltdown" (metaphorically) because Halo Infinite got update and it broke the game on Linux. Whenever this happens, of course we should reach out devs to notify it and it is normal we ask here if there is a weird issue on our end or actually something broken with the game, but bear this in mind: -If a game has support, unless devs come out and say "No more support for Linux" (like Apex team and R* did), the game will eventually get online back in some hours. Already happened like 3 times with Fallguys, 1 with Gears 5 and now this time with Halo Infinite.

I read people saying MS wants to "harm" Linux and stomp it, but facts say otherwise. The same company who now wants to be everywhere, even on their "real nemesis" (PlayStation), will target Linux as a potential risk? Not only that, but pretty much every single Xbox game has online support on Linux while other third party one would expect should be interested in, does not.

Let's chill a bit. I know this shouldn't happen and we should complain to get access as soon as possible and this way companies will care more whenever they work on these updates, but it is not a drama unless we are properly disclosed by the devs.

Have fun!
