steam not running

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 9:03am

hello , for some reason steam don't run after installing it (and i mean i press the icon and the process doesn't even start ) i had tried several solutions that involved using terminal but didn't work as well

i use linux mint

(i don't know if that's relevant ;one of the solutions was making me use (sudo apt get-update) which showed me an error at the end saying that something doesn't support architecture i38 (it was several things that showed that message ))

Is Bazzite the Only Option?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 7:20am

I am looking to download a handheld OS that is SteamOS-like but I am going to be honest, Bazzite is Clunky, there are fixes being put out, but I want to be able to choose my own desktop environment and not have immutable files bitching at me.

I want an experience I can custom fit to my needs, that also has a barebones SteamOS face that I can customize. Not sure if much of the Bazzite OS can be customized, and the reviews are mixed—some love it, some despise it.

Any other recommendations out there, other than Bazzite?

SO Does sober count as a modfied client

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 6:13am

so i saw this video of kreekcraft about roblox banning modified clients https://youtu.be/0yfaefEifBk?t=187 .so does that mean sober users will be banned or no and sober does not count as a modified client . if sober is considered a modified client how are people gonna play roblox on linux like there is no official client . they removed the official back in 2020 .if sober is not considered a modified client then thats great.

Help troubleshooting GPU crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 3:58am

I am running an up to date EndeavorOS (basically just Arch) with an AMD Raedon 6600 and an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G. I disabled my iGPU and have been running games off my 6600 for the past couple months. This has worked great until a few days ago. I was playing Marvel Rivals and my game kept crashing so I tried a few other games (Halo Infinite and Left 4 Dead 2) and they both crashed. Though when I switch to the iGPU it worked just fine.

I realized at one point though that I could still hear, it's just there was no display. I think my GPU is crashing and not rebooting itself but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Any advice would be great.

My Mesa version is 25.0.5-arch1.1

Desktop scaling affecting game resolution?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 3:57am

I'm running Bazzite with an AMD GPU (7900XTX) on a 4K monitor.

In game mode everything is running perfectly fine, but sometimes I run games in desktop mode to make accessing Discord/an internet browser/Spotify easier.

In desktop mode, having the scaling set to anything above 100% will cause a game to be unable to run at my monitor's native resolution. If I have scaling set to 150%, instead of 4K being an option in full screen mode, I'll have a max of 1440p with no option for 4K resolution. Borderless windowed mode will also have the game running at 1440p instead of 4K.

I fixed it by changing the display option labeled "Legacy Applications (X11)" to "Apply Scaling themselves" instead of the default option of "Scaled by the system" but I'm under the assumption that X11 is going away in favor of Wayland. Will this problem happen again when that happens?

Quaqued game on Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 3:26am

So basically: I downloaded Farming Simulator 25 from Fitgirl Repacks with multiplayer, installed it on lutris using the option to add a local game, selected the installer, everything was fine. After installing it, I configured the exe of the installed game to start, it started normally, but when I pressed play multiplayer, it gave an error. So I went to the folder where the game was installed, copied the Nodvd files to the location of the game, and tried to start it again from lutris, and it gave the error that the game wasn't starting from Steam. I added a shortcut to steam using lutris, it started the game and then gave the error that it wasn't being started by steam. What can I do to configure this?

What am I missing? Do i need to set up more to get games to run?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 May 2025 - 12:20am

I've got

endeavorOS

64GB, 2x32GB, DDR5, 4400MHz

12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900F processor (16-Core, 30MB Cache, 2.4GHz to 5GHz)

AMD Radeon[TM] RX 6800 XT 16GB GDDR6

as far as I can tell this should be plenty for gaming on linux, but most of my games are stuttering and run poorly. Specifically I'd like to play Clair Obscure but I'm getting 2-3 fps on the lowest settings.

From a fresh install I grab steam, set the proton layer toggle, and run the game. I've tried experimental proton too. ProtonDB says the game is platinum compatibility, at least on par with windows (which ran the game at ~45fps) and all the discussions I've found have been for issues with Nvidia settings.

Is there a step I've missed to configure Proton/wine, or a guide for getting games to run well on linux that's got more to it than "use steam proton, it works great on my hardware?"

really hoping not to need to change back to windows and that I'm just being stupid about something.

edit: Steam installed with yay "multilib/steam 1.0.0.82-2 (18.5 MiB 18.7 MiB)"

edit 1.0: I was absolutely missing something very basic. I had not set up a GPU driver because I was under the impression they were already part of the OS for AMD based on a bunch of the video's I've seen on how easy it is to game on linux now. lesson learned, Thank you.

What is everyone's favorite head tracking setup for OpenTrack? I want to use something simple and reliable for XP12.
