moderately annoying issues that i've been neglecting to get help with because they are so minor

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 11:14am

Hi everyone, I've been daily driving Linux for a little over a month now. I'd love to get into details and such but I'm not here for that.

Before I present my two issues, I would like to provide my specs as context.

Distro: EndeavourOS

Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma (using AeroThemePlasma)

Graphics Platform: X11

CPU: 8 x Intel Core i5-9300H @ 2.40GHz

GPUs: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

RAM: 64 GB

Display 1: Built-In Laptop Display

Display 2: Dell P190S (it's so old that it requires a VGA to hdmi adapter LMAO. i got it for free from my father, alongside)

Firstly, whenever I fullscreen certain games, the transparency of the titlebar goes completely black and becomes stuttery. (So far the games that I noticed were affected are all goldsrc & source engine games, and versions of minecraft java edition after 1.13, both modded and unmodded. When it comes to the goldsrc & source games, this strange titlebar thing continues even outside of fullscreen)

Secondly, goldsrc/source engine games just fullscreen on my leftmost display despite my laptop's built in display being the default.

If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Please and thank you.

Sound randomly stops while playing cs2 (Linux mint)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 10:40am

I recently downloaded Linux mint ( Linux noob) been really enjoying everything about it so far but the only issue I get is when running cs2 the sounds randomly stops mid game. I've tried adding SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER=pipewire %command% to the cs2 launch options but it seems to work for 30 mins then stops again. I'm also using a Razer Bluetooth USB wireless headset. If anyone can help me find a fix that would be greatly appreciated 👍

RTX 4080 Super and steamOs?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 9:56am

Hello,

I have a 4080 super and 7800x3d cpu, I would like to try steamos (currently always runned windows since i got the hardware). I was wondering if it is feasible/usable to install steam os since the holidays are coming and I would prefer to use it on my tv for the simplicity (I know there will be suggestions to use big picture mode but I don't want that). I wouldn't mind a performance hit of a few % since the card is already pretty powerful, just wondering if it's usable and what experiences others had...

Play games from multiboot Linux installs

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 9:40am

Hello, I have 2 different distro installed. One for daily usage/work (TuxedoOS) and another dedicated for gaming (CachyOS).

I have a partition dedicated for common usage, from both installations. There I store things such as: games, multimedia files and other stuff I want to be accessible by any users. I called it "Common".

The thing is when I install a game, using Steam, from an installation I cannot start the game when I boot into the other installation. What I mean is: when I install a game in the "Common" partition, from TuxedoOS, the game does not launch from CachyOS. This happens viceversa aswell.

The uid/gid of users on both installations are different. While I cannot set the same uid as owner of the directories from the Common partition, I made a common group, which I added to both users and set the group of the files and directories to it. More so, I've set the games directory's permissions to 777.

Still games do not launch.

The partition is formatted to ext4.

I have searched online, about this issue, but all I found is about Windows dual-boot and NTFS setups.

Anyone knows if it's doable and/or how I can make it?

How well supported are Chinese GPUs?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 8:27am

From what I've seen they're becoming a pretty interesting options due to cheap price, good benchmarking and that stuff but I don't know if they're a good option nowadays for Linux.

Btw I'm planing to mount a pc in 4 to 5 years

Which GPU driver?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 8:21am

Trying to find the gpu driver for my 15" Razer Blade Base 2020.
In terminal: lspci | grep -i vga
Terminal says: NVIDIA Corporation TU106M [GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile] (rev a1)

When I search on nvidia.com i can only see A2000 series or Ada 2000 series for this driver. What's the difference? Seems that any driver file i download has the same name and size. Can I just pick any of the two? There is a section for Laptop gpu as well, files all same name/size, they are named A2000. It's super confusing!

Spider-Man Remastered Poor Performance

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 8:18am

I've switched to Linux a while ago and decided to play Spider-Man Remastered. I played the Miles Morales version on Windows at ultra settings and it worked flawlessly. But this time on Linux I can barely get 60 FPS on very high settings. At first I thought the game was simply heavier than Miles Morales, so I tried lowering the graphics settings, but the performance stayed the same — barely 60–70 FPS, with stuttering and drops to around 50 when swinging.

Any idea how to fix it? I'm using CachyOS and proton-cachyos, and my Steam launch options are:

__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 game-performance mangohud %command%

If you ever feel useless, remember that this Steam library filter exists

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 7:52am

It does literally nothing right now. It's supposed to show only games for Linux, but with Proton, which is now always enabled, it treats all games as "games for Linux".

Help choosing between zorin and bazzite

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 6:43am

TLDR: powerful computer, powerful games. but also do weird things with pc. i need flexibility but im not smart enough for hard distros.
BAZITE= Powerful but inflexible for my wierdness
Zorin= i like it, can do my stuff, but not sure it can cope with games are hardware i play

i realize this is an often asked question, the typical "which one is right for me"

to keep it short, im a big time gamer, mostly RPG, Survival and non-competitive fps.

i also like addons like nvidia broadcast, and require voice attack in some games due to dissability. (i know i got an uphill battle with that one)

i have been enjoying zorin, i am part of a social group with plenty of old folks, and zorin has been my go-to for fixing up their computers and im rather familiar with it.
however this was mostly for extending the safe life of folks with low power use and laptops.

im not sure its sutable for me. im running an overclocked i9, 4070ti super, overclocked ram 64gig.
i play Helldivers, Ark Ascended, Star Citizen and final fantasy 14(and all other FF), CIV along with scumm vm retro games and a few indy games.

looking at that i think bazzite would be sutible.

here is the problem, it isnt just gameing i do:
i run a family NAS and have a growing dvd/bluray collection for it, im often having to mass rename lots of files.
i depend on the WIN+H Dictaphone for spelling and mmo raid use. Win+Shift+S for screen clipping.
i have an accusatory little brother who i need to keep instant replay or something like it on.
i use lots of macros, and AHK stuff as i often tend to use things in an unusual way.

as an example, i like a 80-20 split on my ultrawide, 20&screen for videos and browsing and 80% for the game. i use AHK to push the window up half an inch to get rid of the white upper frame on the window.

i also do much data processing and as a result, my desktop environment and my documents folder are networked to my home lab and not the local machine

as far as i understand it BAZITE is powerful but inflexible, zorin has good ease of use but possibly unsuitable for powerful hardware and games.

any input would be appreciated

STALKER GAMMA GOG is not launching on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 6:34am

Hello Reddit community!
I wanted to let you know that the GAMMA GOG version won’t launch on my ZorinOS. I’m getting the following error:

“The file \Anomaly\bin\AnomalyDX11.exe does not exist.”

But it is in the system.
I’m running the game through Heroic Games Launcher.
Hopefully Grok or someone from the team will see this :)
Also hoping I’m not the only one with this issue and that I didn’t just mess something up.

Peace to everyone! ✌️

I picked up an rx 9070xt and it's ray tracing performance is WAY below benchmark expectations on my setup. Is this normal?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 6:04am

According to all the statistics and benchmarks I saw before buying, the 9070xt should theoretically be 20-30% faster at ray tracing than the NVIDIA 3080-ti I had been using on Linux up until now, or at the very least on par. I used linux mint for a very long time, but I switched to to latest Kubuntu because I couldn't get my AMD gpu working on mint. It's a fresh install with no NVIDIA residue, running Mesa 25.2.3 and manually installed ROCm 7 for blender support, kernel 6.17. Based on everything I've read, that should be more than enough to meet the software requirements for the rx 9000 series.

I booted up Hogwarts Legacy to test it out since I happened to still have it installed, and to my shock having ray tracing enabled even on the lowest settings made the game totally crawl to an unplayable degree (while totally fine on ultra settings without ray tracing), whereas my 3080-ti had no trouble ray tracing on linux even at maximum.

I tried blender as well, and found that it was like a full magnitude slower than the NVIDIA gpu, like 5-15x cpu rendering speed vs the 3080-ti's 50-100x cpu rendering speed.

Is this normal? Or am I missing something that makes ray tracing match it's expected performance seen in all the reported benchmarks?

Marvel Rivals performance is much worse after switching to Linux than on Windows (help, GTX 1050ti, Xubuntu)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Dec 2025 - 5:19am

So I recently made the great switch from Windows to Linux (Xubuntu), took a while to decide because I do like to tinker with things, and upon my consideration, I realized all the games I like to play in particular (for the most part) are working on Linux. Now, before I hear any "Linux has to do a lot of translation and you can't expect better performance or exact same performance on Linux on such a heavy DX12 game," I get it, but it's not just a little lower. Performance is much much worse. I'm lucky to hit 45 fps in light areas in a match, where before I could hit 60+ in lighter areas perfectly fine on Windows. Proton and DXVK is mature, and should handle it basically on par. I know this because other people I've seen online fixed their performance on Linux and got it on par with Windows, I've tried following those said tutorials, many of them, no amount of Launch flags, or proton versions (I've tried at least), can fix the issue of very sub par performance sadly. I tried Proton Experimental, I tried Proton Hotfix, the latest GE-Proton, tried many launch flags and even made sure the user could write to gamemode.ini file. I am on the latest Nvidia drivers available within the Ubuntu repositories for my card, so that's not an issue, I also have all the necessary 32 bit libs installed too.

I've tried everything I know how, even trying to run a winecnf in ProtonTricks, nothing seems to fix performance even a little bit. I'm really stumped, and am willing to tinker, but also am looking to actually be able to play the game playably ASAP. Does anyone know any known stable Proton GE version, launch flags, ProtonTricks methods, or anything, to make this performance stable out at least almost on par with what I had on windows?
