Issues with CS2 on Debian Trixie

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 5:39pm

I recently started dual booting debian and, after some trial and error I managed to install the drivers for my gpu. I wanted to play some CS2 and I get this error (I known my Laptop is powerful enough, since it works on the windows partition). I've included both fastfetch and nvidia-smi results. Here is what is displayed when running steam from the terminal:

steam.sh[37099]: Running Steam on debian 13 64-bit

steam.sh[37099]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically

Update on the current state of Pop!_OS?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 4:43pm

Right now I am an happy arch/cachy-os user (I use both in different machines) but the new LTT video made me wonder about the current state of Pop!_OS and why is it so popular that just a simple research on both google or chatGPT would recommend new users to go for it multiple times.

I appreciate System76 and I think Pop!_OS is a good distro but right now I have some major doubts about it:

  • Isn't it shipped with Ubuntu's kernel? Isn't this alone enough to make it a worse choice for gaming compared to Fedora, Bazzite or CachyOS?
  • Does it recommend Cosmic DE during the installation process? Linus ended up installing it and, while the Cosmic project is moving forward quite well in my opinion, last time I checked on it it wasn't at a stage I would just recommend it to new users over more mature and solid DEs like Gnome or KDE.
  • Finally: do you use Pop OS? Do you actively recommend it to gamers/new users? Why? What are your problems with it, if any?

I'm very curious to understand a more recent take of the Linux -and most specifically Linux gaming- community about it as I've been out of it for 3-4 years now.

RX 570 & Linux ReBAR - Is It ACTUALLY Being Used?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 4:20pm

BLUF:
ReBAR is "allegedly" being enabled on my RX 570 (RX 580 2048SP), but I don't think it's actually being utilized because GART is still equal to 256. It ALLEGEDLY works on Windows with the Registry hack, but I haven't found an equivalent to get it forced to reliably work on Linux. Any help forcing ReBAR, confirming, or denying what is stated below would be greatly appreciated.

PC Specs:
--LMDE 7, latest updates and 6.12 kernel
--Gigabyte H370 Mobo (Above 4G Encoding & ReBAR enabled in BIOS)
--Chinese 8GB RX 580 2048SP, in other words basically a 570

Supporting Evidence:
--Per lspci -vv, 8GB of BAR size is being mapped to the GPU.
--Per dmesg, GART is still set to 256MB, the "non-ReBAR size", so the GPU isn't actually UTILIZING the fully mapped 8GB
--There is (allegedly) no way to force it to work on Linux because the GPU firmware itself doesn't have ReBAR support
--Windows users (allegedly) can use the Registry hack to force it to be enabled, but I haven't seen such a thing for Linux
--The two statements above seem contradictory--either Windows is being tricked/lying about true ReBAR support, or there's some kind of flag to force it on Linux like there is on Windows and I just haven't found it yet

Below is an AI explanation as to why this isn't working. Per Rule 5--Yes, I did "try to use my own brain" for this ...but I found contradictory or incomplete information. I'm not a Linux expert, so I needed the extra assistance. I had a couple of AI instances argue it out and determine a final answer which I will paste below (they utilized various dmesg, lspci outputs to determine this). Perhaps some other people can decode what was said below a bit better than I can.

https://pastebin.com/LU7vaTTC

Generated Conclusion:
Your RX 570 has a large PCI BAR mapped by the platform, but the GPU and AMDGPU driver do NOT use it for VRAM access. Polaris continues to operate with its legacy 256MB DMA aperture and does not gain the performance or behavior associated with true Resizable BAR support.

Help me decide between distros.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 3:53pm

I have a Nvidia 5070ti gpu, and I have yet to decide which would be better for me: Nobara or CachyOS? I personally preferred the idea of Nobara, it seems more stable because of the Fedora backbone but reading through the website it seems its backed by a very small team. I have used Linux for years now, but I have never tried an Arch linux based distro because I don't want to spend a lot of time solving issues. Help me decide, or another recommendation?

Considering switching to Nobara - can someone confirm TH8S compability?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 3:28pm

Hello!
I'm planning to switch from Windows 11 to Nobara, and I've been doing research to make sure everything I have works, with software and so on. Only problem is, I have a Thrustmaster TH8S shifter, and I can't seem to find anything about if it works for Nobara/Linux.
I have seen somewhere online that someone could use the TH8S by connecting it straight to their Thrustmaster wheel, and then the game (Euro Truck Simulator 2) would recognise the shifter as well. The issue is though, I have a G29 wheel + pedals, so I am unable to do that. Right now, I'm connecting it directly to the PC.
I mainly play ETS2, Dirt Rally 2.0 and Assetto Corsa with the wheel + shifter, so I want to be able to use the shifter, if I switch over to Nobara - I think it would be a waste if it didn't work.
So has someone used a TH8S (or TH8A) on Linux? Does it work fine, or are there some quirks I should know about?
If there are any workarounds to make it work (if it originally doesn't), I'd love to hear about that too.

Is there a Linux native speedhack program like Cheat Engine?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 2:43pm

I'm on Fedora 43. Ideally I'd like one with a hotkey like Cheat Engine. I tried both PINCE and GameConqueror but they don't have a speedhack feature.

I tried ceserver and cheat engine trough bottles but after hours of troubleshooting I feel like that is way beyond my capabilities at this point to make it work. I managed to compile it using Gemini and I could connect to the server but attaching the game process would freeze it every time.

Linux, HDR, RenoDX

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 2:23pm

To start off, I don't know much, or rather about the current state of Linux gaming. I wanted to replay Mass Effect, and got the Legendary Edition for it. However, it works abysmally on my system and it seems that's due to resource management as I've got more than enough horsepower.

I found that DXVK fixed the issues but unfortunately I wasn't able to use HDR. If HDR was active it would mess up the colors making them too bright and too toxic. This is where a thought came in - what if I try to play the game on Linux as I've been hearing it works very well now.

How is HDR support now, and support for tools like RenoDX?

For the record, the hardware is 13700k, 32gb 6000 ddr5 30, 4090.

And one more thing, how is support for AE-9? (creative sound card) Back then I tried to give Linux a go I wasn't able to get it working.

How to run Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller on Linux/Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 1:17pm

Recently, I tried to run Crazy Taxi 3 and ran into several problems: lag, controller issues, FPS drops, and popping/poorly loaded textures.

Here are the steps I took to fix it, I hope they help someone:

  1. Download the game, it is available on websites like "myabandonware". This works with all versions (I tried English and Spanish versions)
  2. If necessary, install it (with Wine or by adding the installer to Steam)
  3. Download CT3 Tweaks https://ct3tweaks.stashy.dev/ Open CT3Tweaks.exe (with Wine or similar), select your game installation folder, and select "optimize for your computer". If it does not automatically recognize your screen resolution, press "Advanced mode" and enter it yourself (also select 60fps).
  4. Download dgVoodoo2 from this link https://raw.githubusercontent.com/legluondunet/mlls-tools/master/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_79_3.zip It is important that you do it from this link since the latest versions of the program do not work in Wine.
  5. Copy the contents of "dgVoodoo2_79_3/MS/x86" (four DLLs) to the game installation folder. Also copies "dgVoodooCpl.exe" and "dgVoodoo.conf"
  6. Open dgVoodooCpl.exe with Wine and select the game installation folder if it doesn't do so automatically. Then uncheck the "3dfx Watermark" option in the "Glide" tab and in the DirectX tab uncheck "dgVoodoo Watermark"
  7. Add ct3.exe to Steam. And rename it Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller. Thus, Steam Input will find a controller configuration. Also select a version of Proton in compatibility (I have tried with protonGE and protonCachyOS)
  8. Plug in your controller and activate Steam Input, look for the "LilElvis" community settings. You can modify it if something does not convince you.
  9. Enjoy :)

By configuring the game in this way we avoid the aforementioned bugs, especially the corrupt menu bug after the Game Over screen. I know that the DgVoodoo2 developer is not very open-source friendly, but I don't know how to do it with another program, although there are other similar wrappers

META Quest 3 on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 1:01pm

So its been some time since I switched to linux. I used to play a ton of best saber before switching. The problem is that I cant find a way to get my Quest 3 work with my steam library.

I want to play via a wired connection not via WIFI. So I cant use steam VR.

I tried ALVR but it does not connect to the PC. I did some research and found out that I have to enable Developer mode on quest. But to do that I have to register with meta (which I dont want to do)

I had a question is there a way to change the OS on the quest? I dont use it for anything else apart form SP gaming. Ik that many will say i should change my headset but I dont want to throw it away. I paid for it and so I think i own the hardware to make changes to it.

(Major Disclaimer, first: Don't open the game without patching it to be safe) Black Ops 3: Ultimate Experience Mod not working.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 12:22pm

Okay, this post may be a bit of a long one because I need to provide context here.

First of all, like I said in the title, DO NOT open Black Ops 3 without downgrading the game and applying something like T7 patch (or something else) to make the game safe to play. (This is in case anyone has BO3 in their Steam Library but hasn't played in years but decides to install it to try and help.) If you launch BO3 without installing a safety patch, you could face pretty nasty things like RCE exploits.

Now, onto the main point of this post. I've been getting back into Black Ops 3 lately pretty much solely because of custom zombies maps, and I've been having a lot of fun with it. But there's something kind of odd. One of the most popular gameplay mods "Ultimate Experience Mod" (which adds a progression system, among other things) absolutely refuses to work for me.

When I load the mod in the main menu, the game just turns to a black screen with the text saying the mod is loaded in the upper right corner. Audio continues to run, but it's just a black screen. And I've tried leaving the game like that for like, an hour, and it just stays on the black screen.

I've tried another mod, titled "All-Around Enhancement" which is another gameplay mod that does some similar things (but is also, of course, very different, and is entirely its own thing) and it has worked completely fine with not a single Linux-Specific glitch, from what I can tell.

I actually got in contact with the creator of UEM, and they tried to help me, but sadly, nothing ever came of it. They had me download a special "development" version of the mod, but that acted the exact same way as the normal version did. Black screen with text saying the mod is loaded in the top right corner. And frankly, I don't really want to bother them with this anymore, as they seem pretty busy, and I honestly feel like I might have more luck just asking around here.

I do hope someone can help me get this figured out, as it would be awesome to have a progression system in the game and have things to work towards as I play.

I have tried looking around to try and find any information about it, but I have sadly found nothing.

Here's my specs, if it helps:

OS: Debian 13

GPU: RX 6600

CPU: i7-11700

RAM: 16GB
