Should i just install do a dualboot?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 2:35pm

Hello, i have Thinkpad x201 with i7-L620, 8GB ram and 420GB SSD. I just want to browse web and play some retro games (2005 and before) with it. Only game i can run properly with it was Soldier of Fortune. GTA San Andreas and Vice City's didn't load properly (It was just a black box with some white triangles), TMNT(2003) had similar problem. Freedom Fighters, Half Life 2 had lower FPS for thiş hardware. Marc Ecko's Getting Up gave an error and refuse to launch. My software is all updated and upgraded, i tried with Lutris and Bottles. I am using Q4OS (Debian 12)

P.S: If linuxgaming of today can't run era appropriate games for 10 year hardware, are we sure it can handle games of today with todays hardware ten years in the future? I am really fond of linux and this can make a proper test of how future-proof linux gaming really is.

Swapping CPU causes Denuvo lockout

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 2:31pm

Just a heads up for people upgrading their hardware, if your Denuvo license gets refreshed after upgrading it locks you out. At least that's what happened to me today, no modified prefix, runners or anything of the sort.

I sure do love drm that punishes paying customers.

Can't get any fan control software to work (Lact, CoreCtrl..etc)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 2:02pm

I have an RX 7800 XT, on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, everything is updated. I can't get any software to control my GPU fans, I tried Lact, CoreCtrl and CoolerControl. None work and I get error messages.

On Lact I get the following error message: https://imgur.com/a/Eq6GU8A

Any idea please? Do I need to update something related to the GPU driver? I'm lost.

Upgrading My PC for Game Dev & 3D on Linux – Need Help Choosing the Best Upgrades

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 1:15pm

Hey everyone,

I recently switched to Arch Linux(from windows) a few weeks ago and have been getting into game programming and 3D graphics. Right now, I'm using Blender and Godot, and I also want to explore graphics programming (SDL, OpenGL, etc.). In the future, I might also do some music production, but that’s not my priority right now.

My PC lags sometimes, especially when multitasking or using memory-heavy apps. I also can’t play some games I wanted to try, but I’m not sure if it’s a hardware issue or something else, once I got issue with tiny glade that vulkan drivers not supported. With the help of my brother I got to know vulkan is supported but not completely may be . I want to upgrade my PC to improve performance for game development, 3D work, and general usage.

Current PC Specs:
  • HP EliteDesk (Exact Model Unknown)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 (4 cores, 3.2 GHz, no hyperthreading)
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Integrated)
  • Storage:
    • 500GB HDD (WD Blue, SATA 3.0, 6Gbps)
    • (Planning to buy an SSD, don’t have one yet)
  • Power Supply: HP 240W (80+ Gold)
  • OS: Arch Linux
Issues:
  • Occasional lag when multitasking or using heavy apps
  • Some games don’t run well, but not sure if it’s due to hardware
  • Slow load times (since I’m still using an HDD)
Possible Upgrades I'm Considering:
  1. GPU: Looked at RX 550, RX 580, and heard from my brother as well as some reddit discussions that AMD GPUs are better for Linux. Any recommendations for something in my budget?
  2. Storage: Should I get an SSD first (since I only have an HDD now)? Will it help with general performance and lag?
  3. RAM: Would upgrading to 16GB DDR3 make a huge difference? Or is DDR3 too outdated?

Would like suggestions on the best upgrade path to get the most performance for my needs! If anyone has experience with AMD cards on Linux, please share your thoughts.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Is it worth it for me to play on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 12:54pm

Hello everyone, I have a pc with an i7 7700 and a gtx 1050 ti (4gb), I currently use windows 11, I'm thinking about switching to linux because I know it's better for older hardware, but I saw some benchmarks on youtube and it seems that nvidia isn't that good on linux, with my 1050 ti will it be bad to play on linux?

(No hate to @HappyDiggers)

TL;DR Sadly, (i) we need (kernel) client side anticheats, and (ii) it's true that enabling Linux support for Client-side ACs will increase the number of hackers.

(i) Everytime I see a game which choose to explicitly NOT support Linux, I always see hate to gamedevs and Client side anticheats.

We all know that Client-side AntiCheats don't work always, but they're necessary if you want to reduce the number of cheaters.

Every single competitive game that uses AC use a Client-Server architecture, so we alredy check and verify every client input, the server already has authority over clients.

So why do we need client-side anticheats?

On the server, we can't (completely) verify if the client is using hacks or not: * Fast camera rotation? Maybe the mouse has higher sensibility * Does the client crosshair aim a player enemy even though it's through walls? It could be luck or skill Etc. etc.

It's not impossible to have only server side anticheat, but it'll be less powerfull than a client side AC.

(ii) Why enabling linux support for any anticheat will increase the number of hackers? To allow Linux users to play, the (kernel) client side ACs have to lower their protection. This is a problem: hackers can mask themselves as linux user even though they're on Windows. And because the ACs will have lower protection, it'd be easier to bypass them.

If you were a game developer what would you do? Will you support a platform with a small playerbase with the risk of increasing cheating? Or will you drop completely that platform to reduce (even for a low percentage) the number of hackers?

Note: Steam Remote Play causes Space Marine 2 to crash during launch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 11:29am

I've been dealing with "Application has stopped working" error for a few days now, tried literally everything. It turns out that Remote Play loads some dynamic library, similar to the Steam Overlay, which causes lagging and leads to a crash. I couldn't find the exact reason for the crash, but I guess it could be linked to steam input, which cannot be disabled. Disabling hardware acceleration or any other options didn't fix this.

The solution: install sunshine streaming server, works smooth as butter. If you're compiling it from PKGBUILD, don't forget to comment out the tests, since some of them may fail and stop the building process. Works just fine with the latest Cuda version.

Steam GTAV rockstar launcher

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 11:14am

When I installed GTAV enhanced, rockstar games gets force installed, alright cool. The default install location(C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Launcher). I press continue on the install. I close out when it tells me to input my creds. I read more about it and install the launcher from lutris and do the same process and cancel the creds thing again, boom okay.

I DID THIS PROCESS AGAIN after uninstalling and now it’s making me “verify with code” from this random email “pvbyfi@jznstore.xyz” email. Which is NOT any email I own.

But everytime I reinstall GTA and load rockstar games from STEAM it makes me go through that process. But now since I did it so many times, RS timed that email out so I can actually input my true creds. But it LOADS INDEFINITELY.

How can I uninstall this RA launcher that’s “not” in my Linux drive but in the “C” drive(see photo attached for example from lutris version of RS launcher to show what I mean what I had from stream.

I really don’t know what to do here is there a fix for this or am I borked. Please lmk!!

Monster Hunter Wilds bad Performance on full AMD System

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 10:36am

Hello together,

i am kind of new to linux gaming, at least on desktop because i have a steamdeck wich made me want to try linux on my gaming rig. Right now i run into a problem with mhw.

My Specs:
Processor: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Graphicscard: Radeon RX 7900 XT
Distro: Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon

Game starts and runs but with around half the FPS i get on windows. I didnt install any drivers or tinkered with the game settings at all (besides trying proton hotfix). What i noticed is that under windows the fans of my graphicscard are clearly noticeable shortly after starting mhw on windows but on linux the system stays silent. another indicator that not the full power of the card is used is the lower powerconsumption.

Any ideas what i can try?

How can I launch gta 5 enhanced through epic games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 9:55am

On windows I had to launch it once for the rockstar games launcher to start then launch again for the game to start because the rockstar games launcher it displays "BUY NOW" instead of "Play' or whatever it should display, but with heroic games launcher I'm not sure how to replicate these steps.

Current performance of wined3d in regards to DXVK 2025

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 9:41am

Wined3d seems barely talked about now in regards to gaming, with the release of wine 10.3 now; what is the current status of it gaming-wise especially in comparison to dxvk? Any notable improvements? Will development ever reach a point where it can replace DXVK?

Multi-Monitor VRR on Nvidia!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 9 Mar 2025 - 8:45am

It's been a year and a half since I first started looking into making the switch to Linux on my primary PC, but the Nvidia drivers were holding me back for so long due to their lack of multi-monitor VRR support. This was the biggest thing stopping me from using Linux, but in the latest driver it has finally been added.

I'm using Fedora 41 now. Getting the drivers installed was a little difficult- They're not on the RPMFusion repos yet and I was having trouble getting the RPMFusion Rawhide repo to work, but I eventually figured it out. I then had some dependency issues as a result when trying to install Steam, but in the end it all worked out and now I have everything set up how I need it to be. The performance across the games I've tested so far is roughly the same as in Windows, but the general system responsiveness is SO much better. Having full control over my system and not having to worry about ads or random updates is genuinely relieving.

Hats off to the Nvidia devs that have been working so hard over the past year on getting all of this stuff to work. My experience for the past few days when compared to a year and a half ago is genuinely night and day. Outside of the driver installation process, I think that Nvidia on Wayland has become a genuinely great experience. It's VERY comparable to Windows now.

I am hoping that the Nvidia Settings app will begin improve under Wayland, since setting up a FPS cap for GSYNC with Mangohud is not very seamless, but other than that I have been impressed at how well everything's working. With all the HDR development happening I am excited to watch things improve even further. I've been using Linux on my laptop for a while now, but being able to fully embrace it on my desktop too has made for a very fun and very educational experience. This is the most excited I have been about anything tech related in quite a while.
