Hey everyone — what gaming/work laptop would you recommend for video editing with DaVinci Resolve that also plays nicely with Linux (good driver support, minimal hassles)? And what distro should I use so things don’t break later?
Hi all — I already have a decent desktop, but I’m planning to buy a laptop for video editing. I really want to run Linux instead of Windows because I’m not a fan of Microsoft’s ecosystem. My budget is up to US$1,100. I’ve been looking at a few options:
HP ZBook Fury 17 G7
HP Victus 15
ASUS TUF Gaming A15
Lenovo LOQ
Here are the main things I care about:
Good GPU (for DaVinci Resolve) and performance — both rendering and color grading.
Linux compatibility: drivers, GPU support (especially with NVIDIA), no major firmware/BIOS issues.
Good display (accurate colors, decent resolution).
Cooling and build quality, so it doesn’t throttle when doing heavy video work.
Also, I’m fairly new to Linux. On my desktop I’m using Linux Mint, and this will be my first time buying a laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. So I want to avoid distro + driver issues down the road.
I’ve heard that HP laptops sometimes don’t play nicely with Linux, but I noticed that the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7 is officially Ubuntu certified (link), which sounds reassuring for compatibility.
So my questions are:
Do you think the ZBook would be the safest choice because of the certification, or would a Lenovo LOQ be a better option in terms of driver support and long-term compatibility?
Among the models I listed, which do you think is best for video editing under Linux + DaVinci?
Are there other models you’d recommend under $1,100 that are better for this workflow?
What distro would you suggest for stable NVIDIA driver support — Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, or something else?
And if I test the laptop with a Live USB before installing, what should I check to make sure everything works properly?
Thanks in advance for any advice! 😊

Can this be done?
CEF is trash on linux I know, but:
On Xwayland, rockstar launcher works fine. On wayland it fails to load. Considering steam can be ran with disabled hardware accel, and rockstar does not expose cef arguments (like the nice people they are), and I found no way to turn it off, can it be turned off any other way?
Intercepting dll loading to add the arguments if it takes them, re-compiling cef, anything?
And no, I can't just use xwayland or pure X11 for performance reasons.

Hello I recently tossed windows out the window, but im completely confused about how to install GW2 on linux mint and get it to run. Please dont flame me im not linux literate yet. But when I try to download the game from the game site its only for windows. Do i need to set up proton DB or lutris or something first?
I dont not play on steam and have no interest in installing it, since I only play 2 games wow and gw2. I just need help in getting the game installed and playing from the game launcher.

Tips to optimize a piece of crap
Hi, So I have an old Laptop (aka piece of crap) that has an E1-1200 Processor, AMD Radeon 7310 HD integrated graphics, 4gigs of ram and a HDD, First of all, I KNOW, IT'S FRICKING ASSS,I even think it was considered low end back in 2006 But it's the only ass I got, I know you will tell me to atleast upgrade to a SSD becasue it's dirt cheap, but even that I can't do because I live in a third-world country where dignity doesn't exist, I'm 18 and I don't have a job and inflation sucks and my parents can't get me a new laptop in near future, so I'm stuck with this horrific thing, enough talking, I want every piece of optimization tricks you guys can, I know it's frickin' doomed (the so called gpu doesn't even support Vulkan so no dxvk for you buddy) but I won't give up so quickly, I want the best wine and proton optimizations, best kernal (I heared zen kernal is good for this kind of situation but I want to know what do you think), and overall all the tricks up your sleeve, thanks in advance!!
btw I run Linux Mint Cinnamon but with Xfce environment (I installed it separately because it's lighter but I still can switch to Cinnamon which is cool)

Corsair HS80 driving me insane. Any way to configure it?
Hi there!
So, i own the headset mentioned above, and it works just fine, BUT there is no headsetcontrol support, nor i manage to install this tray . I tried to create a Windows 11 vm with the icue software thing to configure a couple of things out, but just by leaving the vm context, all settings turn back to default.
My main issue is that i keep on hearing a tune/short sound, like two notes of warning, that i don't know what those are in the first place, but they keep on making me not focus on whatever I am doing at any given moment I am locking in, could be games, random programming, even conversations via voicechat, I am frustrated with this since I cannot seem to find a way to stop it.
Any idea is welcomed. I would also accept headset alternatives, since this ones, even if I love them, are giving me such headache.
Thanks in advance!

Linux Gaming Peripherals?
So I'm finally making the switch to Arch and it occurred to me that Razer does not seem to officially support Linux. I did some digging and it seems like while there's openrazer and projects that use it, they don't seem to cover much besides basic macros and lighting, much less all the advanced stuff you can do in synapse like remapping keys, different sound profiles for headphones, etc.
Are there any companies out there that actually have a full ecosystem (headset, mouse, keyboard) with similar features, ideally with an app that supports Linux? Honestly any recommendations for peripherals would be appreciated, or am I just better off keeping my Razer stuff and using a windows VM to config it?

Your Hearthstone Arena Companion, now with Wayland support
Hi guys,
I'm triodo, the developer behind Arena Tracker.
About two months ago, I shared AT here, mentioning that it only worked on X11. Understandably, many of you asked for more — you wanted Wayland support. And now, you have it!
If you play Hearthstone on Linux, take a look! Arena Tracker is focused on Hearthstone Arena, but it also works in Standard and Wild modes.
You can find everything it does — in both free and premium versions — here.
On Wayland, screen access is handled by a small binary called captureHelper, which is downloaded on first run to your USER/.local/share/Arena Tracker/Extra directory. This binary requires qt6-base and qt6-multimedia to run. If AT doesn’t detect cards on Wayland, try running captureHelper from your terminal to check if any libraries are missing.

Xbox controller not recognized by Steam on bluetooth.
Hey guys, I am a noob when it comes to linux, and I've been stuck on an issue.
Firstly, I am using Kubuntu with the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment. It took me hours to figure out how to get my controller even connected to the bluetooth, and I finally managed to do that, but now I'm running into an issue where Steam does not seem to recognize my controller at all. This is not the case when I plug it in by USB C. It recognizes the controller and works perfectly fine. This is also true with KDE because while it is connected and recognized by bluetooth, in the settings tab under 'game controller' it is not seen as a controller. I also tested it with a USB and it IS recognized as a controller when connected by cable.
I have already done the update by connecting the controller to a PC and using the xbox accessories to update the firmware. I have installed xpadneao and dkms, though I'm not quite sure if I did it correctly.
I am completely stumped on what to do to get Kubuntu and Steam both to recognize my controller so I can play without being forced to connect by USB cable. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will try my best to provide any relevant information.

No distro works for my pc
i got an hp victus 15 and i tried almost every more popular distro (not arch based) and none of them worked correctly, i got an rtx 4050 with an intel cpu and my only requirement in windows was supports secure boot and plays left 4 dead and not performance demanding games, i tried ubuntu, linux mint, debian, pop os and fedora (i did have to use mokutil to use nvidia drivers in some distros), fedora was the only one that worked the best but still alot of lag spikes the other ones just crashed the whole pc when i tried to run it, i really wanted to use linux because i think linux is pretty cool but i simply cant nothing works with my pc

Amd bc-250 ps5 cutdown APU board - fan issue
Im new to linux but do have some knowledge, just got a new hectic pwm fan for cooling with a 3d printable shroud for the amd bc-250 (aim is turning into a budget gaming rig) , when i plug the fan in and turn on it goes to max which in this case is 6700 rpm, unit is very vell cooled hahha
But even when i go to bios and set custom fan setting for different temperates and save + exit it does not change the fan speed at all.
Any ideas? could the fan be faulty? (it is indeed 4 pin) Or would i need to install graphics drivers first for whatever reason (currently only using the bootable media for fedora, not installed) Just figure id ask before committing to an hour of violent wind noise trying to work it out.
TIA
