Can I run Steam games which I installed in Windows through Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Oct 2024 - 5:09am

Linux noob here. So I wanted to play around with Nobara just to see if it felt different from Windows.

In Windows, I created a D:\ games drive and an N:\ Nobara drive. I installed Nobara on N:\ and moved all my Steam installs into D:\Steam.

Then in Nobara I set my Steam library to point to the same partition, but none of the games are booting, no matter which Proton version I use.

Adding non-Steam games from that partition to my library DOES work, however.

Am I missing something very obvious? Is it possible to run Windows "installs" in Nobara?

I think Linus kinda foreshadowed what the "year of the Linux desktop" is actually going to be

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Oct 2024 - 1:56am

So i am stoned at the moment, so i may be misreading this. In a video about getting trolled into getting a LG Wing (LMG Clips video) he mentioned that with the Google Pixel and Chrome books are getting traction (and are getting good and are decent spec laptops) google is quietly building an eco system like Apple has. Then there is Steam is loudly going great work with the Steamdeck and Proton being awesome. The year of the linux desktop just might be the Chrome Book.

ProtonDB Tweaks?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Oct 2024 - 12:58am

I know this has been asked before, but I'm not sure I'm looking at the right spot on ProtonDb to find the tweaks, because I don't see any instructions on which tweaks are needed for any of the games, and when I just use proton with steam, the game doesn't even start, it takes an eternity caching vulkan shaders and then...nothing.

How do you activate native wayland in bottles?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Oct 2024 - 12:23am

Soda 9.0
GL

After setting the appropriate key into the register, I wanted to force native wayland by adding DISPLAY into Compatibility/Environment variables. This seems to be taken into account but launching fails and then I get:

warn: wayland.c:1597: no server-side cursors available, falling back to client-side cursors warn: wayland.c:1608: text input interface not implemented by compositor; IME will be disabled

Has anyone managed to run the wayland driver within bottles?

External tool to help share application audio on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Oct 2024 - 12:10am

I made a UI to make it easier to combine application and input audio streams on Linux, which can be used to share application audio through your mic as Discord for Linux doesn't support sharing audio when sharing screens or applications.

Running games off a linux server to Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 10:01pm

I was looking into what games are on Windows and realized that they all take up a ridiculous amount of storage. For example, Fortnite takes about 100GB to install. I then remembered I have a Linux home server, and an interesting idea came to me. Can I install my games on my server and then launch them from there onto my Windows machine? I know of people launching games from an external SSD, but does this work with protocols such as ssh, sftp, etc. on a Linux Ubuntu Server? I am new to all of this, so any input would be appreciated.

Need halp changing keyboard layout

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 7:38pm

So, I added multiple keyboard layout in the mint settings and can change between them without any error. But, when playing games changing the keyboard layout don't work for them, they keep getting input as if you layout was still the default one. I saw the solution for this was changing the layout using the terminal and the setxkbmap command. Doing this changes my layout correctly but makes the layout applet on my panel disappear and changing layout using shortcuts doesn't work anymore. Why does this happen ? Doesn't mint settings do the same as the command ? How can I make so Steam games detect my layout properly without having to use commands every time and break the mint layout settings ?

PSA: Nvidia 565.57.01 DVI-D issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 7:37pm

If you have monitor connected through DVI-D it's better to not upgrade to 565.57.01, because this interface does not work with this driver.

KDE on-screen keyboard that works even if standalone keyboard is plugged in?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 6:34pm

Basically the title. Would love to receive some suggestions on on-screen keyboards for KDE that work when standalone keyboard is plugged in. I use my PC both as a gaming device and a TV of some sort, so having the possibility to access both without plugging-unplugging my keyboard would be fantastic.

The closest that almost worked for me, was xvkbd, but it couldn't be minimized at will hindered its potential, and i decided that it would be alot more efficient, if i ask the Reddit.

Thank you in advance!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 6:28pm

I didn't really see any videos on that topic on the internet and the one I saw was 10 years ago.

When you predict it about a year before it was announced

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 6:17pm

Saw this come up in memories, written a year before the SteamOS announcement! Hardly a big prophecy (And my timing was off) but still neat to see!

Discord voice activation only works if the window is active

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Oct 2024 - 5:32pm

I'm using Manjaro with i3, installed Discord and everything is working correctly however the voice activation only works if the window is active. For example if I open Chrome and click in it then voice activation won't activate, if I focus Discord again it works.

Is there a fix for it?
