Games with Nvidia driver (version) checks (current example: Dragon Age: The Veilguard)
tl;dr: Some games use rather simplistic checks to allow or prevent a game start. This currently affects Dragon Age: The Veilguard for example. A launch option can overcome those. See the details below. This does NOT mean that it will be stable but it will most likely start, which is nice.
_________________________
For Nvidia users, one doesn't have to run beta drivers but can simply use the launch option DXVK_NVAPI_DRIVER_VERSION=56070 %command% to spoof the game into thinking that the requirements are met. It only seems to check for the version string after all. "560.70" is what it's looking for.
For Lutris users, that line (without the %command% element) goes into the game config > System Option > Command prefix field.
NOTE: The more out of date your current drivers are, the more you run the risk of crashing the game later on, but you can at least get it started and not fail at the initial driver check. The game references Windows driver versions, the Linux ones don't directly correlate but might work regardless, or don't.
Well, with that launch option, you can check how it does without compromising your other games or apps by installing beta drivers. So far, the latest "new feature" release 560.35.03 seems to work. Nvidia Driver Overview (note: DO NOT install drivers manually unless you know what you are doing!).
Current drivers via ppa: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa This one allows to make use of the "auto" install in Ubuntu and it's flavours while it populates the list of available driver versions with more recent releases than the default repos would provide. Simply install it and see what ubuntu-drivers devices has to offer before and after.

Steam processing shaders often
Is it normal for steam to need to process shaders for a game every day sometimes more than once a day? I play Overwatch 2 and I feel like every other time I launch the game I need to wait 15 minute for it to reprocess the shaders. Just wondering if that's normal or not.

Nvidia for new backpack Linux build= great idea?
I switched to Bazzite on my Legion GO about a year ago, and I love it! Now, I’m looking to build a portable “backpack” PC and am searching for the best gaming distro for a desktop setup using my Dan A4-SFX case, which has a capacity of 7.25L.
The challenge I’m facing is that this case only accommodates a 2-slot GPU, and I can’t seem to find any compatible 7900 cards, which leads me to consider an Nvidia GPU instead.
Will this configuration work smoothly, or should I rethink my choice of case?
Here are my specs:
- Case: Dan A4-SFX v4.1 (7.25L)
- CPU: 7800X3D or 9800X3D
- MB: ASUS B650E-I
- GPU: Inno3R 4070 Ti Super Twin X2
- RAM: G.Skill Z5 Neo 6000/30 32gb
- SSD: SK Hynix Platinum P41 M.2 2TB
- PSU: Corsair SF850 Platinum

Convince a gamer to switch to Linux
Now that the kernel-level anticheat situation has definitely deteriorated in the FPS field, how to convince those who were about to return to Linux even if they love APEX, CoD, LoL, etc.?

How can I make windows co-exist with Linux?
I really really really don’t want to, but I’m finding myself wanting to play a couple of games that don’t have Linux support (lol, Fortnite, the new cod blackops) and as such and contemplating installing windows. However, it will retain its second class citizen status.
My question is, how can I install windows without it effing up my Linux setup. I’m specifically referring to windows forcing itself as the default boot. I want it to remain a manual boot option only.
What are the best approaches? Should I opt for the “lite” version of windows 11 that was released?
I’m using bazzite as my distribution on my gaming machine.
Thanks to all. And once again, I do apologise, for asking such blasphemy. Returning to the cursed os is the last thing I want to do 😭😭😭. I shall make sure I repent for my sins.

Need help with an issue navigating the options menu on Dragons Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds
Hello,
I have been having an issue with Dragons Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds where if I enter the settings menu on either game, the game will start clicking as if moving through the options and no inputs in that menu will be recognized. This does not lock the game up, I can still back out and interact with menus outside of the options menu. If I manage to change any options, they are not saved and are reset upon restart. I have attempted to change the config file but this did not have any effect, the game resets all settings on restart. This might not be related, but the games also crashes KDE Plasma on launch requiring it to be manually restarted. The games also do not render properly in full screen due to flickering between the game screen and a black screen, but works fine in windowed mode or when launched with Gamescope (however this is not ideal as controller input does not work with it).
If anyone knows what might be causing this and has some tips on how to fix it I would really appreciate it. This has been happening with Dragons Dogma 2 since the recent performance update, and seems to be pretty much showing the same symptoms on Monster Hunter Wilds. I tried looking up if anyone else has a similar issue, and while I found similar reports in the github issues page for Proton, the solution offered there did not work for me. So this whole thing has been driving me up a wall.

Cheap brand Xbox/ps controller support?
Hello!
I have been setting up an emulator for my kids running on ubuntu 24.
I want to buy controllers to play different games. Switch emulator, xbox and so on.
In my area (not the us) there are cheaper controllers with support for windows/xbox and switch and sometimes playstation instead of Xbox.
They are wireless and look like the orignial.
I see that the orignial controllers have good support, is it likely that these type of controllers Will work out the box?
An example: https://aurdel.com/se/sv/gam-139

AI Anti-Cheat?
Just curious, does anyone know if more advanced AI Anti-Cheat reduce the need for Kernel level access? I just know that AI can be very good at pattern recognition so I wonder if it could be used to detect cheaters without needing as deep access to their system.

About Linux Gaming religion
Yea unfortunately 2024 was not a good year for online games on Linux, but how long will you remain under the illusion of recommending Linux to those who like to play online and demonizing when someone recommends Windows in dual boot to this type of person?
Stop treating Linux like a supreme religion, a game you buy on Steam and dedicate your time can stop working at any time, they will give you a simple warning and that's it.
There is nothing wrong with having Windows in dual boot to play some specific games, you are not a "sinner" because of this, having to say this proves what a joke the Linux gaming community is.
EDIT: You can start crying and say that this never happens, it's okay.

Wouldn't it be creepy if a game required you to install a -dkms package? (Discussion)
Most Windows competitive players are just fine with Installing games with all bloat these games need, like a kernel-level anti-cheat. But a software for a game embeded in a core of a system is really creepy. I know some are aware of that, but most people don't care, I think because installing a kernel-level anti-cheat is like installing any other software on Windows and people don't think about it too much. I myself would be more concerned if a game asked me to "go to your terminal and type yay -S battleeye-dkms", or even worse, asked me sudo permissions to install it automatically, than if Windows just gave me yet another "Yes or No" pop-up. Especially considering that almost any software you want to install on Windows, meanwhile on Linux flatpaks allow you to install user software for... well, user, as a user, and touch sudo only when you need to update your system or install a system component. For this kind of user a game asking sudo permissions would be incredibly creepy.
I guess people on Windows just got used to OS owning their hardware and software owning their OS, so they just don't care. Installing some Linux distros, it's nature, materials on it and it's community, I think, give more awareness of how your system work so that you may think before typing your root password in a "Need sudo permissions" window.
Just wanted to express my messy thoughts. Totally not caused by Apex banning Linux, nuh uh, unrelated. Perhaps Valve will cooperate with Battleeye and Easy Anti-cheat to make a kernel-level anti-cheats for Linux? So that devs that use them aren't as scared of cheaters on Linux. Because many people still want to play competitive games and I don't think Valve will give up on Linux on their "consoles".

Gaming on Linux EP#145: Red Dead Redemption PC | Nobara vs CachyOS vs Windows 10
Monster Hunter: Wilds glitched terrain, everything else is fine
MH Wilds Graphics bug
Wish I knew what's going on, does anyone have any ideas as to why it could be happening?
I'm using:
proton experimental bleeding edge
Debian Bookworm 6.1
Plasma 5.27
Cpu: Amd Ryzen 5 1600 Oc: 3,8 Mhz V: 1,385
Gpu: GTX 1080
16 GB Ram
Process: Started the game and everything was fine shader compiled game started no problems,
During the first cutscene in the main screen (I had a connectivity error) the Handler started looking like the picture above.
I then went to start the game.
It started out fine with basically no problems besides characters looking a little very bad, then the chase sequence came and the game just broke more and more, started out "fine" with "only" graphics flickering but it got worse over time with character models being ripped apart until the above came out.
Yes I'll also be sending this to capcom, if they have a way to report bugs.
