Other News about gaming on Linux

I ragequit ... probably shouldn't have but it got to me.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 8:28am

So for more than a year i dualbooted windows 11 on one drive and EndeavourOS on a second drive.

Gaming was fine, i used a 2080 super and more recently a 4070 ti super, it had a bit of performance loss but that was ok.

As long as you stay inside steam itself not much is needed from the user (if at all), just like my steamdeck it just works.

But going outside steam things get sometimes ... tricky, juggling with different versions of proton/prefixes etc.
I love to play older games, i have loads of em i bought before steam was a thing, some i bought again on steam others are no longer available.

But that's beside the point, my breaking point was updating the OS.
I only ever used the official endeavourOS menu shortcut to update the pc and for the second time in a year i update the pc, something went wrong (which i haven't even seen happening but probably flashed by in the wall of text), linux tells me it completed all the updates and when i reboot it can no longer find /boot/linux-image something something.

The first time i was able to fix it after having to boot from a live image but as i am no linux expert it felt like black magic and voodoo trying to mount disks again etc. it doesn't feel very user friendly.
Now yesterday, it happened again!

No indication, no errors while updating (the nvme drive itself is perfectly fine), after updating i retried it kept telling me all was updated, no updates found.
I reboot my pc and ... once more it cannot find the @/boot/linux-image something.

I understand windows also has it's issues but i cannot fathom how linux would botch my install twice in a year using only the standard update shortcut provided by endeavouros.
Let alone make the entire operating system unbootable.

Now i use Timeshift, i probably could have booted into a live image, mount my drive and then launch Timeshift to roll back but i just .... kind of lost it yesterday.

Went into gparted, nuked the entire disk including, games and went back to windows 11.

I think i'm getting too impatient now, i'm in my late 40's, always worked in IT (DOS/Windows, not so much linux) but i'm just a bit tired of it.
I don't like windows much anymore, it's a privacy nightmare getting infected by AI by all sorts of means but i haven't had to ever reinstall my system in the last 7 years or so.

I am sure i will eventually come back to linux but for now i'm too frustrated.
But i do hope gaming on linux will get even more convienient in the future.

Sorry for the rant.

Gaming on AMD BC-250 with Arch-based distros

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 6:23am

Got gaming working on my BC-250 with Manjaro. Created an automated script that installs mesa-git and oberon-governor, inspired by mothenjoyer69's work for Fedora. Tested on Manjaro, EndeavourOS and Garuda. Only Manjaro requires the installation of mesa-git; both EndeavourOS and Garuda use mesa 25.1.

Thinking of switching my old laptop to Linux, but worried about the performance.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 6:22am

Hello, I want to try Linux as my main OS on my laptop, but the reason I haven't gone full Linux yet is because of my very old and low-end hardware.

I have a laptop with an i5-3340M, Intel HD 4000, 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, and an HDD. It's an old laptop I got as a present from my grandma.

I use Linux extensively as a developer, both with WSL and on servers. I have a fair amount of knowledge to use it, but nothing too deep, mostly just terminal commands for server needs.

Right now, I'm using Windows 10, and I have to reinstall the OS every 2-3 months just to make it a bit faster again. I tried using a modified version of Windows 11, and my laptop struggled with it.

I'll mostly be using it for programming, with some occasional gaming when I feel burned out. I usually play Stellaris, Darkest Dungeon, osu!, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and some other indie games.

I don't know if my laptop can handle these games on Linux. I've read online that I should avoid using Wine if possible, but for Windows-only games, my understanding is that you still need Wine (or something like it) to run them. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Is it possible to run at least these games on my ancient laptop? Will I need to edit things in the OS before running the games? If so, please kindly help me.

Sorry for the long post and Thanks!

What data could a game access if running in proton in steam deck?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 5:41am

Lately I’ve seen a huge backlash against borderlands 2 on steam as they changed EULA to make it so they gonna monitor and take a lot of info from you ( that’s what I understood). But afaik proton games in sd are running in isolated containers and they won’t get that much stuff to report/ monitor compared to running in windows right? Or am i wrong!

Is there such a tool for Linux or something similar?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 5:36am

You've probably heard of Steam Tools or have already used them (I've been using a few weeks ago on Windows with no problems, there's a lot of discussion about whether they're safe or not)

And for those who don't know, instinct is basically a tool that works with lua files and Steam manifests, so you can trick Steam into thinking you have a game in your library and you download the game from Steam's own servers

And basically it's much better than a torrent and takes up less space, but is it only for Windows?

If there was a tool like this for Windows, it would have been around for a long time because it would be much easier to play, sometimes it is very annoying to have to use it before installing a Windows game on a prefix and everything else.

And by chance if anyone has the knowledge in the confines of this Sub if there is a similar tool or even a sucker for this tool already existing in Linux itself I would be very happy

In case you've never heard of Steam tools, there's a tutorial I know on YouTube that teaches you how to use it and where to download it, but it's in my country's language (Portuguese-Br)

Linux gaming kernel??

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 5:04am

So I just made a brand new linux kernel built specifically for gaming/performance. Did this out of boredom, still has nothing much in it but I think it'll help me if I can get some feedback at the moment whether the gaming tagline should be kept or be removed? Grab the package here.

G5 Pro V2 Controller - Constant Max Vibration Bug in DuckStation & Redream (Android)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 4:02am

I recently bought the Machenike G5 Pro V2 controller. Overall, I’m impressed by its build quality, analog precision, and feel—possibly better than the official Xbox pad in some respects. However, I’ve discovered a serious vibration bug when using it on Android emulators.

Issue: When using the controller via 2.4GHz wireless dongle on Android, both DuckStation and Redream trigger continuous, maximum-strength vibration.

The vibration never stops from the moment the game starts to when it ends.

There's no context sensitivity—it's not triggered by events like crashes or attacks, just constantly on.

This makes the controller nearly unusable for long sessions; it's physically tiring and clearly not working as intended.

Other Notes: Tried USB wired mode (Switch mode): works fine, but no vibration at all.

Tried different emulators and cables. Same issue persists.

There are no options in DuckStation or Redream to adjust or regulate this vibration behavior per controller.

Specific Examples:

In Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2 (Redream), the vibration starts immediately and never stops.

In Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (DuckStation), the issue is especially noticeable during the jet ski/motorboat stages.

Has anyone else experienced this with the G5 Pro V2 or similar third-party controllers on Android? I'm wondering if this is a firmware issue or just poor compatibility with haptic APIs in these emulators.

Any fixes, tools, or workarounds would be much appreciated.

Best distro for Intel Celeron N3060 and 4GB RAM for gaming from USB?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 3:20am

Hi everyone!
I have an HP Notebook 14-am006la with an Intel Celeron N3060 and 4GB RAM. I’m looking for a Linux distro that works well for gaming, especially for Geometry Dash via Steam or Lutris, and can be installed fully (not just live) on a 14GB USB drive.

I’ve already tried a few distros like antiX, Debian, Puppy Linux, and dpup Bookworm, but I’d love recommendations for the best performance with my specs.

Optional but ideal: full installation to USB instead of running in live RAM.

Thanks in advance!

Considering the Switch from Windows to Linux: Gaming Compatibility Concerns

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:47am

I have always been drawn to Linux because of its many attractive features, but my passion for gaming kept me from making the switch. Recently, I was "forced" to use Win 11 that i did not like at all so I’m now eager to move to Linux. However, I’m uncertain how gaming works on Linux. For instance, on Steam there are countless titles that only run on Windows. Would I need to launch a VM every time I want to play those games, or is there another solution

Just Purchased an RX 9060XT - Running Nobara - Anny suggestions on Distro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:41am

I just picked up the new 9060XT and need to wipe my current OS (Nobara) to fully remove the NVIDIA drivers. Since this is my first time using an AMD GPU, I'm curious to hear about others’ experiences with AMD cards and which Linux distros they prefer.

For context, here are the distros I’ve used with NVIDIA in the past:

  • Pop!_OS (my favorite so far)
  • Ubuntu (with Pro and livepatching)
  • Nobara
  • COSMIC (Rust-based Pop!_OS test build)
  • Linux Mint
  • Kubuntu

Any recommendations or insights on what works best with AMD GPUs would be really appreciated!

¿Distro ligera para HP Notebook 14-am006la (Intel Celeron N3060) con 4GB RAM para jugar Geometry Dash desde USB de 14GB? ¿Instalación completa posible?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:30am

¡Gracias!

Itch.io gaming on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:13am

Hi I'm thinking of moving to Linux on my main laptop since I encountered errors even on my newly installed Windows. I know that Steam and Epic has decent support on Linux but I was wondering how's the support is for Itch.io games? I enjoy installing new games and some of them only runs on Windows. Also can I run .exe games that isn't on any storefronts?

¿Distro ligera para HP Notebook 14-am006la (Intel Celeron N3060) con 4GB RAM para jugar Geometry Dash desde USB de 14GB? ¿Instalación completa posible?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:12am

Need missing file for CS2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:08am

I am missing the file "libpangoft2-1.0.so" found inside the directory "Counter-Strike Global Offensive/game/bin/linuxsteamrt64". whenever I launch CS2 I get the error " failed to dlopen "libpangoft2-1.0.so" error=libpangoft2-1.0.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". From my understanding Steam just refuses to download that file, so if it is not against the rules could you simply send me that file, or maybe you know how to resolve this issue another way?

İ think my pc got infected. Linux mint.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 2:02am

Caught a folder in my external hardrive named with numbers, i got kicked when i tried to open it. The folder dissapeared instantlty. Also when i'm playing windows games on wine/lutris my hardrive wakes up on it's own, thats why i think it's a windows virus.

Since i've decided to go with linux in my first pc i don't know much about windows.

İs there any chance this something to do with my system or wine/windows doing something instead of it being a virus?

Since it's not damaging the pc i don't plan on doing anything about it. Just wanted to know how cooked i am.

Can't get Steam/Oversteer to recognize Logitech G29

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 1:32am

I'm pretty new to Linux, but I've tried to do the following:

Neither has let Oversteer detect the device, in PS3 or PS4 mode.

I'm on Pop!OS, I'm not sure what info it'd be helpful to have but I can grab it it if asked? Sorry, as I said, super new to linux.

Need Advice: Dual Booting Windows + Linux for Gaming & Learning

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 12:50am

I’m planning to dual boot Windows and Linux for the first time and could use some advice on how to set it up. My main goals are: Gaming on Linux, Learning Linux for an IT career.

My current setup:

250GB SSD has Windows installed

1TB SSD used for game storage right now

2TB HDD also used for storing games/files

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out:

Should I install Linux on the 250GB SSD (wiping Windows) and move Windows to the 1TB SSD?

Or should I keep Windows on the 250GB SSD, install Linux on the 1TB SSD and keep using the 2TB HDD as shared storage?

Also:

I have Steam games installed on the 1TB SSD and 2TB HDD — can Linux read/run those, or will I need to reinstall them?

Is it okay to use the HDD for both OSes to access games and files?

Sorry if it seems too much to ask would love to hear what others have done in a similar setup. Appreciate any tips!

Dune Awakening Audio Fix (PopOS - pipewire Alsa Fallback)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 12:47am

After "some" debugging (pipewire - pulseaudio was giving errors) I switched to ALSA fallback with my trusty olde RME Multiface2.
The game showed Pulse devices even with override to ALSA, gave Invalid channel mask errors in winedebug logs.
winepulse.drv was still loading despite config changes, no matter what I tried..

Set Wine registry (this is global, can be set for games wineprefix specifically, too):
wine reg add "HKCU\\Software\\Wine\\Drivers" /v Audio /d alsa /f

Disabled Pulse in Proton-GE manually:
Renamed winepulse.drv to disable Wine’s Pulse driver:
mv ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-4/files/lib/wine/i386-windows/winepulse.drv ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-4/files/lib/wine/i386-windows/winepulse.drv.bak

mv ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-4/files/lib/wine/x86_64-windows/winepulse.drv ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-4/files/lib/wine/x86_64-windows/winepulse.drv/winepulse.drv.bak

Seems like GE-Proton provides its own Pulse driver preventing Alsa fallback, I tried this through steam before amongst a heap of other things (pipewire config for pulse, it just wont work).
This GE-Proton version was manually added just for this game

Key stickiness issue on Steam on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 6 Jun 2025 - 12:24am

Hi everyone, going to give you all the details I can do. I’ve been playing Schedule One on this quite medium laptop, Acer Aspire A514-54, i5, onboard graphics (probably Intel Xe), 20GB RAM, SSD is fine.

I’m running Ubuntu and the snap version of Steam. Obviously Schedule One isn’t going to run great with onboard graphics so I’ve got it on medium quality and turned off all the anti-aliasing, god rays bs.

Normally I’d attribute issues to the shitty graphics but it seems that the game is mostly responsive and loads well. However, I’ve got this weird bug where the longer I press W to run, once I release it, I carry on running for up to ten seconds, and can’t stop or press other keys.

Otherwise, button presses occur fairly quickly, just are really sticky if I’ve held them a long time. I’ve read that this might be to do with Proton and the way Steam virtualises Windows games via Wine.

Apart from buying a new laptop (no can do) what could I try to fix the stickiness issue? Cheers
