A question about making the switch

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 10:58am

So I am increasingly thinking of taking the plunge into Linux gaming. My current gaming PC is has windows installed on one drive and my games all installed on other drives.

If I format my windows drive to set up Linux, would all the game files on the other drive need to be redownloaded from steam to be the Linux compatible version? I am assuming that would be the case.

Lags spike on *EVERY* games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 9:55am

So I tried a few game on linux, from lightweight to game that req higher spec. They both have a same problem - Lag spike. At first, I tried Wuthering Wave - kinda like Genshin, so its req some specs and it happened, I though thats bc my laptop is not strong enough, but later on, I tried Minecraft, Balatro, etc, games that should be run fine on my laptop and they all have the same problem I do a few research but none of these help. Please help me get rid of this

My setup: - Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 - i5-1145G7 - 32Gb RAM - Fedora Linux Workstation 42 (GNOME + NiriWM) - Steam installed through FlatPak - Proton-GE installed through official repo (not through Flatpak) - Minecraft: Minecraft launcher on Flatpak I hope that help

RTX 4090 + Linux + Prism = 12 FPS?? I’m seriously about to lose it

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 9:43am

I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve got a 4090, Zorin OS, and I'm using PrismLauncher with modded Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge). This setup used to fly. Now I’m getting 12 FPS. TWELVE. I’ve spent hours trying to fix it. Here's what I’ve done so far:

✅ Running Prism via AppImage (flatpak is completely removed)

✅ Cleaned all Prism folders (~/.local/share, ~/.config, etc.)

✅ Using Zulu 17 Java

✅ Confirmed the game is using my 4090, not the iGPU (nvidia-smi shows Java using 1.8GB VRAM)

✅ Installed vulkan-tools — Vulkan is working, and driver is NVIDIA 575.64.03

✅ System has 64GB RAM, and I’ve tested both 4GB and 8GB JVM allocations

✅ Shaders are OFF, render distance is low, and FPS still tank

Mods are mostly light, some worldgen, nothing that should wreck performance. Here’s what’s killing me:

🔹 This exact same modpack used to run buttery smooth on this same machine.

🔹 Now I get 12–20 FPS max.

🔹 My friends running the same pack on Windows have zero issues.

🔹 I’ve tweaked settings throughout the year, and I’m starting to think I broke something deeper system-wide.

So now I’m stuck. I don’t know if this is:

A PrismLauncher issue?

A Vulkan/Mesa/NVIDIA driver problem?

A Zorin OS config quirk

A Java tuning bug?

any ideas would be greatly appreciated

One Year on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 8:16am

As of today, it's officially been a year since I swapped nearly full time to the penguin on my main computer. First starting on my steam deck with SteamOS, then to Mint on my main rig, then moving over to PoPOS, and finding my way to arch though manjaro and Cachy, and eventually landing on vanilla arch (btw) where I am now. What a crazy journey it's been so far and I can thank all of you kind folk for helping someone like me who was in entirely over their head navigate this often very confusing path to get where I am now, a very proud and happy Linux user! Here's to many years to come, thank you everyone here who's helped me!

DO YOU KNOW IF THERE IS ANY PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH THE CAT STREAM DECK APP FOR PHONE?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 7:11am

Hello, on Windows I could use Streamdeck el gato program with the phone through its app. My question is, is there any way to do that on Linux? PD:Sorry, my English is basic and I forgot that putting the brand of the stream deck would pass it to the cat lol.

Is Windows really the problem, or is it DirectX?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 6:59am

Just a little thought I had. A lot of windows games stutter and perform worse for me than they do on Linux(all Amd system), even though my windows install is clean. So is it really that windows as an OS hogs more system resources, or is it that Vulkan is just much more efficient than directx? Since proton translates games from directx to vulkan

I'm making the switch from Windows!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22 Jul 2025 - 5:25am

Checking out System76 laptops and desktops as I'm making the switch from Windows life to Linux life.

I've worked with a couple of distros over my career already and do enjoy each for they all have their quirks.

Now I've just joined this sub and started reading a bit, I used to be a hardcore gamer, I am talking skipping school for a midnight release having a whole month to enjoy myself.

Fast forward to recent years I'm not so much a hardcore gamer but do want to jump on something when I've got some spare time.

Games I would like to play: - Cities Skylines 2, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Jurassic World

Linux Questions: - Is there a place to check what games run on Linux via steam or distros that have more driver support than others? - Any distros the community recommends to use for the above or more games?

Any feedback would be great!
