Finally, I found a Linux distro that just works for Nvidia (Bazzite)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19 Jan 2026 - 3:50pm

Hey guys. I'm a newcomer to Linux, fleeing from the Winpocalypse.

The last three months I've tested multiple distros in my journey to find something that Just Works (tm).

And I should say I'm using a newer Nvidia laptop, which adds a lot of frustration for a beginner. I also want to share my take on what needs to be done until Linux is ready for the masses.

Here's my experience:

Ubuntu

Lack of customization made me switch to Mint.

Linux Mint

Lauded as a beginner friendly distro. But is it really?

The setup was easy enough, everything seemed to work out of the box.

Then I updated the drivers and chose the newest Nvidia driver.

Mint then stopped detecting my external monitor. I spent my entire evening reading documentation trying to figure it out. Thankfully, someone told me on Reddit to disable Secure Boot and also roll back to an earlier Nvidia driver.

I think large warning signs are advisable during first time install, if an Nvidia GPU is detected. It should say something like "remember to turn off secureboot and do not use the most recent nvidia driver"

After I fixed this issue, a bunch of others cropped up:

  • Only 480p shown on YouTube and Netflix (even with 1080p selected)

  • Games would run slow, compared to what I expected from the hardware

  • The Cinnamon interface was a bit... slow or unresponsive.. I would have to wait for 1-2 seconds every time I clicked on the start menu in the bottom left.

  • I use fractional scaling, and Mint would frequently zoom the entire interface into the top left on boot. There was no easy solution to this.

Eventually Mint started crashing regularly as I tried to fix the scaling issue. So I switched to Fedora.

Fedora KDE

The live image worked fine and everything functioned as expected.

But after install, the boot screen would be stuck, spinning endlessly on the KDE/Fedora logo.

Cue a long evening of troubleshooting.

I learned that when using Nvidia, you need to boot Fedora KDE with -nomodeset, until you can install Nvidia drivers.

A warning would have been nice.

After that, I had issues with:

  • Finding the apps I wanted (I need to enable repos and stuff? I selected the Nvidia repo or RPM, does that mean the driver is installed? Where to I download Heroic? Where do I download Signal?)

  • Fully disabling mouse accel and smoothing (felt like dragging a glue stick across the screen).

  • Fractional scaling was slightly buggy (flashing white lines at edge of screen).

I spent some time trying to fix this, then jumped to another Fedora variant.

Fedora Cosmic

Brightness controls didn't work for external monitor. Lacking apps and settings. Not ready for daily use. Fractional scaling worked fine, though, which was nice.

Bazzite

It just works. This distro is a completely superior experience to everything else I have tried.

The only issue I have now is that the scaled monitor is slightly blurry. Any idea how to fix?

My biggest takeaway from this experience is that Linux distros need to become more beginner friendly if they want mass adoption.

Most people will not spend their evening figuring out -nomodeset for a non-booting Fedora. Or accessing the BIOS to disable secure boot to get HDMI to work. How many people know what a BIOS/UEFI is?

Nor will they spend months testing out distros. People want something that works out of the box.

Regardless, after three months, I am very glad that I finally found something that works. I would much rather use an OS that respects me, rather than trade convenience for privacy.

Hope you enjoyed my TED talk.

NVIDIA DX12 Issue is actual agony by the way

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19 Jan 2026 - 3:05pm

Marvel Rivals on a 5060 ti with a Ryzen 5 3600 (which is to be upgraded because of bottleneck) runs at 50 FPS in MEDIUM

while on Windows you get 90 FPS ON ULTRA SETTINGS??

I know its a UE5 game and im being bottlenecked but STILL, i genuinely believe that the NVIDIA drivers are still wrecking with issues man

New Linux User Here: Faugus Launcher and the Alt key dont seem to get along

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19 Jan 2026 - 2:52pm

Hi all,

as of this past saturday im a new linux mint user! (Huzzah)!

Im using the Faugus launcher to play classic wow/mists of pandaria and honestly it's been pretty effortless except for one little hiccup. I normally set my action bars to locked and set my pickup key to alt, but any time I hold down alt, the whole game freezes. It unfreezes if I let go of alt. If I hold alt for long enough I get the force quit dialogue box but even then if I let go of alt, it unfreezes.

Im wondering if there's a built in faugus keybind for the alt key that's fighting with world of warcraft? Any ideas?

R2 (right trigger) causing left mouse click all the time

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19 Jan 2026 - 1:36pm

So basically I'm gaming on bazzite desktop on my new PC connecting a dualsense edge controller. I noticed that by default the conteoller works (touch pad and trigger as mouse) which was cool

my issue is when I enter steam clicking R2 on my PS controller shows up for a split second, left click and then disappears. the problem is that WHY is this happening? I don't want mouse mode.

Because it even happens in all games... for example a game that requires clicking R2 to trigger ultimate sometimes counts as left click and for a moment the icons on screen switch from controller (X A Y B) to keyboard inputs (R Q Z etc...) for a moment until I register any input on controller then it goes back so whenever i click the right trigger this keeps occurring...

any idea how to stop this? I tried searching and couldn't find any similar problems so I'm lost on this one...

Tried disabling desktop layout on steam. Didn't work

Tried disabling the other layout (forgot the name) and that didn't work + could no longer press PS button to go to.home screen so it was a no.

My only assumption is that it is caused by bazzite because of its default controller connection?

questions about gaming on linux after complete switch from windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 19 Jan 2026 - 12:25pm

I just made my compete switch yesterday night and now about to install the first game deadlock... but i have no idea how I should go about the drivers and if they work out of the box like in windows. I have heard and read in faq that proton works even with windows only games in steam... I am curious if the fps is better or worse on proton/linux... so if someone with the same(or different) distro could give me some tips on how to go after a fresh install it would be really nice...

Distro=gentoo(dont know how installing stuff is gonna be like since proton likely is in the repo)
