Quake II RTX: can't select retail content

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 10:37pm

Hello,

When I launch the game, I get the option to select my retail content. However, while it lets me browse to the pak files no problem, when I click OK, the dialog just disappears. No confirmation and the game doesn't launch. Then when I manually launch the game, it comes up with only shareware content.

Is there anything I can do? Maybe a command line option or something I can use instead? I've obviously searched around the interwebs but haven't run into anyone else having this issue.

Thanks for reading!

p.s. it's a good year if you have a Radeon 6000 series card....At some unknown point recently, my framerates went from 15 to 50 and now I'm itching to play the full game!!

Solution:
I copied the .pak files, maps.list, and the two folders, "players" & "video" from the retail baseq2 directory, to the Quake II RTX baseq2 directory. Thanks to whosdr below for the idea!

My PC keeps bricking in games and after closing games.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 9:57pm

I have had my pc brick a good portion of the times I close a steam game or sometimes while in the game. It will close, then 20-30 seconds later everything completely freezes including my cursor. I cant switch to other desktops are anything. I have to force shut it down using the power button.

This also happens sometimes when I do nothing, not even in a game and it will just brick. I started with Mint, did a full reinstallation with Mint, switched to Fedora and then Pop_OS briefly, before going back to Mint. The bricking problem remains through each distro install.

I have checked the 'systems reports' and it never says anything about it in the crash reports.

I have most recently tried updating my NVIDIA drivers to latest supported release, but no change.

If somebody could help me fix this I would be ever so grateful.

Moving from Windows to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 9:48pm

Hi all, as the title says, I'm strongly considering moving away from Windows entirely. However, I have a few concerns that I can't really find a solid answer to, how will my existing peripherals hold up? I'm currently using full Razer peripherals, I'm not really a die hard Razer fan, my peripherals have just become Razer ones over the past few years for some reason. Specifically, I'm using a Blackwidow V3 Tenkeyless keyboard, Viper V3 pro mouse & a Blackshark V2 Pro (wireless) headset. I know there's no official synapse support on Linux for Razer products and I've seen OpenRazer, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience using Razer products on Windows and then using them on Linux (especially the wireless blackshark v2 pro's), was it much different at all? Thanks

Am I not getting something?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 9:43pm

So I am still new to using linux and I have no idea about any of this stuff like repositories or something cause I'm too dumb. I've been trying to play a few games from steam but gave up. However, I found Minecraft available from the built-in Software Manager, so I downloaded it. I created a new microsoft account and tried to login, but I've been stuck on this screen with this Xbox pop up on the side for 20 minutes. Did I miss a step? Do I need this Prism Launcher a few people said to get, even though Minecraft was available in the Software Manager?

World of Warcraft on CachyOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 9:35pm

I was having various issues on Windows lately (WoW would freeze for 3 seconds or so sometimes, alt tabbing would take a while and make the program not respond, scrolling in Discord was sluggish, typing in the search bar in chrome was slow). I have a 5090 and 9800x3d so I have an expectation of decent performance.

I decided to create a 200GB partition and install CachyOS and installed WoW using steam (I know some people recommend Lutris because steam makes the folder layout weird). Everything is running so smoothly right now and i have had zero crashes or issues.

I was able to directly copy and paste my WTF and Interface folders from the windows partition to my Linux WoW folder. Everything was set up and good to go within minutes which really surprised me. I felt sure I would run into crashes or other headaches but it has been over a week with no incidents.

(Also I was able to install my normal work environment which I generally use a Macbook pro for… can I suddenly game and work on a single machine with more RAM and a hefty GPU? It completely has wiped out any desire for the Mac Studio which was on my mind for work and playing)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 9:02pm

I just installed Linux mint, downloaded all Steam Linux Runtime files and decided to run Race The Sun, it runs on like 5fps and the objects are blurry (see picture). I use experimental Proton and my hardware is rtx 3070ti laptop gpu and i7-12700h, got the recommended Nvidia proprietary driver (The game run smoothly on Windows 11).

Which 8Bitdo controller works 100% fine?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 7:40pm

Hey folks, which 8Bitdo controller should work fine with Linux? I use Linux mint with Kernel 6.11.0-29-generic and for some reason in Hollow Knight and Silksong LT and RT doesn't work fine in the wired version of the control I am showing you in the screenshot

So which version should I buy:

- Wireless

- Bluetooth

There is a difference? Thanks in advance.

Is there any benefit in going from Fedora to a rolling release distro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 6:39pm

Hello, I recently bought a 9070 XT while I previously used a 3060 Ti on Fedora. The performance uplift is amazing obviously, but with the 9070 XT being a new card, I was wondering, should I swap to something rolling like CachyOS or OpenSUSE Tumbleweed? I know Fedora gets fairly new software but it still lags a bit relative to true rolling release distros doesn't it? For instance Fedora is still on mesa 25.1.7, when 25.2 has been out for a month now

Will getting the slightly newer mesa (or maybe amdgpu, kernel, or whatever else) really help at all? Or am I just subconsciously trying to distrohop? Any input appreciated!

Halcyon 6 Lightspeed edition issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 6:05pm

So I have a Steam copy of this game and it installs native client by default. However, it has some weird graphical glitches in menues during the gameplay (stretched gibberish text over areas where menu selection should be). This happens in both Steam Runtime Scout and Legacy Runtime. I habe switched to Proton and game works flawlessly.

Can someone elaborate why this is happening?

I am running Linux Mint 22.2, Kernel 6.8-79generic and nvidia drivers 575

Issues running Borderlands 2 on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 5:42pm

I have been using Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS for the past year now and I decided to try Steam out for the first time. Borderlands 4 is coming out soon and I wanted to play through Borderlands 2 before it comes out.

My configuration

My hardware is as follows:

  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX(TM) 4060 Ti 16 GiB
  • Memory: 32 GiB
  • Processor: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-13400F

In terms of OS, software, drivers, etc., I have the following:

  • I am running Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS.
  • I installed the NVIDIA driver through the Software & Updates application; the previous driver was removed by running sudo apt remove --purge nvidia-* -y and then I chose to install the following: Using NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-575-open (proprietary, tested).
  • Steam was installed from App Center.

I downloaded (and installed) Borderlands 2 using Proton Experimental at first. On the initial launch of the game, I skipped processing the Vulcan shaders, changed my resolution to 2K, and it crashed giving me the following log:

On the second launch, I let the Vulcan shaders process and the game didn't crash, however, setting all visual settings to maximum, alongside a 120 FPS cap, resulted in an FPS of ~50-120. It is not sitting comfortably at 120 FPS (with constant stuttering and frame drops), which to me is strange given that it is not a demanding game (or at least I don't think it should be for the GPU I have). I switched to the native version (i.e., unchecking Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool) which prompted an update - this still did not help. I even switched to Proton 9.0-4 (given that I saw a lot of people use it when submitting their report to ProtonDB) and not even this helped.

Questions

  1. Are older NVIDIA drivers better? I have seen a few people saying that nvidia-driver-535-open is better than nvidia-driver-550-open, but this was over a year ago and I have no clue if this is still true? Should I install NVIDIA's new driver from their website?
  2. I had a look at the Improving Performance guide on ProtonDB and noticed the Shader Caching section. Is there a need for this given that it (Steam) cached the shaders already? Would this overwrite my current cache?
  3. Is the .deb version better than the version downloaded from App Center? Again, I saw posts saying that this is true but these posts are over a year old so I am no longer sure - I have also seen people mentioning that there is no (or minimal) difference.
  4. How does the use of Proton versus native work? I switched between Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0-4, and native a few times, and every switch prompted an update to the game. Is this normal? Is there anywhere I can read about this process?

I would really appreciate it if one could recommend an order of troubleshooting steps to take? I don't want to jump into it myself without a proper plan given that I use my system for CUDA-related work and I have had previous issues with installing and reinstalling drivers so I would like to go into this with a plan and a way to backtrack. Thank you for your help.

Reoccurring Bug - Big Framerate Drop (Fixed by Restart)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 4:59pm

Hey there. I switched to Linux last year because I despise some aspects of big tech, surveillance capitalism etc. (not sharing this to point out my "cool, rebellious, personal beliefs" but rather telegraph that I intend to stick with Linux for the long haul despite some pain points).

Currently on Open SUSE Tumbleweed, but the same exact issue I'm experiencing seemed to be distro agnostic on my machine (it was happening on regular Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio and Fedora).

Sometimes (or rather 30-50% of the time) when I boot up a modern 3D game (so far this happened in Elden Ring and BG 3, I assume it would happen in other 3D titles, but I'm not a big gamer these days, so this is all I've been playing in the last few months) I get a dramatic frame rate drop. As in, the game that ordinarily runs at >60FPS (like Elden Ring) turns into a slide show (Steam was reporting 20–30 FPS, but it felt like even less than that).

My PC was a decent-ish midrange like 2-3 years ago and can still handle some of the modern titles (Ryzen 5700x, RX6600, 16GB of RAM).

Since I'm not a big gamer and the issue is usually fixed by logout or restart, it's really not that big of a deal (with modern NVMe drive rebooting and getting back into the game takes like a minute), but it would be cool to find out what causes this issue and fix it.

Anyone else experienced something like it? If you require some additional data to diagnose the issue, let me know, and I'll do my best to provide it.

LM 22 Cinnamon: How to get Epic Games Launcher working via Lutris?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 4:52pm

As I encountered performance issues/tech incompatibilities with Heroic I do not tolerate this beta state software anymore. I have tried tons of things that I can't remember with my ADHD/Autistic brain because I never keep a logbook about every step I change on my system. Wait! Luckily I was tweaking with chatGPT. I asked him what we have tried so far:

Goal:
Get the Epic Games Launcher running without "Failed to load/initialize Captcha" error on Linux Mint 22 (Cinnamon) using Wine + DXVK, without switching to Proton or Heroic(I actually only mind not using Heroic).

Current Setup
  • Distro: Linux Mint 22 (Cinnamon)
  • Wine: 9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3)
  • WINEPREFIX: ~/Games/epic-games-store (64-bit)
  • GPU: AMD (Mesa + DXVK enabled)
  • Tried Kernels: Default + HWE
  • Launcher Version: EpicInstaller-18.8.1.msi (latest)
What We've Tried So Far 1. Wine + Winetricks Setup
  • Created a clean 64-bit prefix.
  • Installed via winetricks: vcrun2019, d3dcompiler_47, corefonts, fontsmooth=rgb.
  • Tried forcing Windows version → win10 → hangs on winecfg. Winetricks internally forces winxp64 for dotnet48 → locks up.
2. Epic Installation Attempts
  • Silent install:→ Installs successfully, but fails to start (EpicGamesLauncher.exe exits immediately).wine msiexec /i EpicInstaller.msi /qn
  • GUI install:→ Sometimes freezes mid-install.wine msiexec /i EpicInstaller.msi
  • Cache cleanup done after each attempt:rm -rf $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/users/$USER/AppData/Local/EpicGamesLauncher/Saved
3. .NET / Wine Mono Issue
  • Wine throws:mscoree:CLRRuntimeInfo_GetRuntimeHost Wine Mono is not installed
  • Tried:→ Winetricks forces winxp64 → triggers winecfg hang.winetricks dotnet48
  • Tried installing Wine-Mono manually → Launcher still crashes.
  • Attempted offline .NET 4.8 installer, but Microsoft changed the URL → 404.
4. DXVK / ANGLE / OpenGL Tests
  • Tried all combinations:
    • --use-angle=gl
    • --in-process-gpu
    • --disable-gpu
    • -opengl
  • DXVK logs suppressed via:DXVK_LOG_LEVEL=none
  • Same result: Launcher fails silently or shows blank window.
5. Alternative Launchers
  • Heroic Games Launcher → Works, but user doesn’t want to use it.
  • Bottles → Same issues as Wine.
  • Lutris → Tried Epic integration → same silent crash.
Where We're Stuck
  • Epic Games Launcher installs, but won’t run.
  • mscoree complains about missing Wine-Mono.
  • .NET 4.8 via winetricks fails (hang).
  • We haven’t yet found a working offline installer for .NET 4.8 or a confirmed stable setup on Mint 22 Cinnamon.
What We’re Looking For
  • A confirmed working setup for Epic Games Launcher on Linux Mint 22 (or similar Ubuntu 24.04 base).
  • Preferably Wine + DXVK, not Heroic.
  • If .NET 4.8 is needed, looking for a valid offline installer.
  • Any known launch flags or DLL overrides that actually fix blank/crashing launcher issues.

Graphical glitches when gaming on sway, but not other compositors

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Sep 2025 - 4:37pm

A while back I posted on this subreddit about this issue I was having in Minecraft.

Since then I realized that I get the same graphical issues in multiple other games. The video doesn't quite capture how severe the issue is.

Also, more interestingly, the issue does not appear on GNOME Wayland session, but only on sway.

I'm using Arch with the latest Nvidia drivers (580.82.07). Enabling/disabling adaptive sync and allow_tearing option does nothing.

Anybody having similar issues? Previously I thought it was the drivers, but this is clearly a bug in sway. Is there anything I might be able to do about it other than file a bug report and wait for a fix?
