Planning on switching, but...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 2:35pm

for a long time, i wanted to switch to linux for gaming, but remained on windows because of game anti-cheats breaking games such as fortnite or valorant. recently i found out that running a windows VM with GPU passtrough is an option and i can do that because i'm running a processor with an iGPU and i have a dGPU. so i'd like to know if the performance hit is gonna make this unviable or if the games work at all on a VM

Does Steam have issues with cloud saves on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 11:07am

So far I have two games that lost their save files: The Forest and Dead Space (2008). Both of these games I've played for a good amount of time before I switched to Linux, about a year ago. Somehow The Forest got de-synced, since whenever I boot the game on windows, the save files are there but never carried over to Linux. My solution was just to manually transfer the save files to Linux. So not really a loss.

For Dead Space however, everything got nuked. I reinstalled the game on W11 and the saves were gone there too. Local save files were not available since I switched from W10 to W11.

Anybody having the same issue?

I'd like to know more as to why this happens and how were you guys able to handle it. Thanks.

Attempting to get vr working on Linux without much luck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 10:22am

Im trying to get vr working through AirLight VR and steam vr so that i can see my desktop while in vr instead of having to hop out of vr every time i want to say look up a tutorial or guide for a game
WiVRn does work but the visual quality leaves a lot to be desired and the openxr processing can be rather glitchy at times
So far i have tried using both the previous and beta branches and the steam no play compatibility fix to no avail in multiple different configurations
connecting the headset to alvr causes steam to immediately crash without throwing an error (that i can find)
while im not necessarily new to Linux, vr on Linux is something that is new to me that i am lost on
i am using Ubuntu 24.04 on X11 KDE Plasma desktop and my specs are as follows
32gb 6000 cl32 ddr5
AMD Ryzen 7600
Nvidia RTX 4070 Super

My driver version is 570

Ubisoft Connect launch arguments

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 9:31am

I have Ubisoft Connect installed using Faugus launcher and I can play games without issues. But I got the Avatar game on sale yesterday and I wanted to play on my 55'' 4K TV. I'm trying to pass the arguments inside Faugus launcher or Ubisoft Connect but without any luck.

For example I want to pass (at the minimum):

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 WAYLANDDRV_PRIMARY_MONITOR=HDMI-1 %command%

I can do it fine in games in Steam but Ubisoft Connect doesn't work with wayland. If I pass the arguments inside Ubisoft Connect, they are ignored.

So far the only way to play this on my TV is first launch it on my 1440p monitor then move the window to the TV, but it's not optimal.

Horizon forbidden west kinda locked at 120 fps

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 9:27am

I have ryzen 7950x3D and rx9070xt. In some places in game I can't get over 120 fps - I have the same number of fps on highest and lowest possible graphics settings. Graphics card usage is low and processor usage is also low (around 20-30% on every core). I noticed that this "limit" is a bit better (+10 fps) when I run the game using only 3D vcache cores. It's not any kind of hard limit as I can get a lot more fps in different parts of the game or when I look in the sky. Do you know what the reason may be?

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle 3060 ti Linux Mint: Failed to allocate video memory (and general graphical glitches)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28 Oct 2025 - 9:16am

Hi all. I'm in the process of switching over to Linux mint from many years on windows and have been really impressed with it so far. Several games I've tried have 'just worked' with great performance and very little tinkering. I am however having some weird issues with The Great Circle.

It seems a bit buggy on windows too to be fair but the strange thing is, on a fresh install of mint mate the game booted up and ran great on recommended settings. After loading it last night the game would crash with the error: "Failed to allocated video memory" with a number in the region of 6000mb (seemed different each time). After booting it in safe mode - recommended settings produce this error consistently and I can now just about stably run on low everything and 1080p. Just found it odd that it ran great initially but now seems very unstable with lots of weird graphical glitches on anything but low settings. I've tried a few versions of proton and different Nvidia drivers but nothing resolved it. Going to try and re-enable shader caching tonight but wondering if anyone had some ideas or if it's just a game that's a bit janky on mint with my specific hardware config.

Machine specs;

3900x 32gb ram 3060ti fe Latest Linux mint mate Nvidia 580 open driver
