Nvidia OC on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 4:47pm

I was able to eek out more performance on my RTX 4060 Asus Dual OC by locking clocks with gamemode.

:::: Running start script [sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1 && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --lock-gpu-clocks=2655,2800 && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --lock-memory-clocks=9501]
:::: Passed
:::: Running end script [sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --reset-gpu-clocks && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --reset-memory-clocks && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia
-smi -pm 0]

/etc/gamemode.ini

[custom]
# 1. Persistence Mode
# 2. Lock Core to your OC target (e.g., 2655 MHz)
# 3. Lock Memory to your OC target (e.g., 9501 MHz for +800 OC)
start = sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1 && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --lock-gpu-clocks=2655,2800 && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --lock-memory-clocks=9501

# Reset to factory behavior
end = sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --reset-gpu-clocks && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi --reset-memory-clocks && sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 0

Add your user to the sudoers file like this so nvidia-smi registers:

john ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/nvidia-smi

It really made a difference with CS2 lows at 1440p.

Can I (safely) install Linux on a secondary drive that also has games from my windows install on it?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 3:44pm

I still run W10 on my PC (at least until the ESU ends) and I'm thinking about switching to Linux instead of W11, but I haven't really tried it yet.

For now I'd like to test Linux a bit in a dual boot setup, but I can't install a separate SSD atm.

My Windows install is on my C: drive and I don't really want to risk anything (neither for that install and also not for the Linux install), so I don't want to install Linux on that drive.

I do have two other drives installed that both have games on them (both are relatively full tho, I could uninstall stuff, but I'd rather not tbh).

Can I use one of those drives and install Linux on a (let's say 100 GB) partition there without any trouble or would you recommend just fully clearing one and use that?

For now the Linux install will only be for testing Linux as a whole and maybe trying different distros anyway, whenever I decide to switch full time (or use it as a "main" OS with the windows install only there if needed), I would of course dedicate a full drive anyway.

Formatting new drive for Steam gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 3:43pm

Hey gang, me again. Having a sucky part-time job means I have more time to dink around with my machine again, as opposed to a couple months ago when I first switched to Mint.

I have a 2T drive that I'd like to have available to run my single player steam games, and maybe partition so that I have another 1/2T for miscellaneous file storage. What should I do?

When I first made the switch to Mint, I checked some forums and tried to configure the disk accordingly but nothing worked (very well could have been operator error). Now I can't remember what I tried, but I'm sure that this isn't a totally unique situation, so I humbly ask for a hand.

Strange behavior in my game.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 1:47pm

I was playing SMT Vengeance on my Endeavor when I noticed that the game was capped at my monitor’s maximum refresh rate (240 Hz). I disabled VSync in the game settings, but the game was still capped at 240 FPS. I tested this on my Cachyos, and, believe it or not, the game was still capped at my monitor’s refresh rate. Then I played the game on my Fedora machine to test one last time, and the game exceeded my monitor’s maximum refresh rate with VSync disabled. Any explanation for this? I think it might be an update that affected how the game manages frames and that impacted my NVIDIA GPU. I used KDE Plasma on both systems.

Audio issues on GTA San Andreas (and some other games)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 1:29pm

Distro: Bazzite (Rebased to Developer)

Game: GTA San Andreas (Steam)

Proton version: Have tried:

- Proton-GE Latest

- Proton-CachyOS Latest

- Proton HitFix

- Proton 7.0-6

Boot args: Have tried nothing, but also `PULSE_LATENCY_MISC=60 %command%`

Hi,

I'm getting audio issues on GTA San Andreas (and a few other games, but not like this). Basically the audio in the menu works fine, audio in the cutscenes work fine, but once loaded into the game there's extremely loud white-noise. It almost sounds like a plane engine from the game. There's some shooting in the background too which may be normal, I'm not sure. In addition you can also see there's some freezing.

My audio setup is through HDMI in to my soundbar, then the soundbar to television by ARC. I have my television set for BYPASS in audio settings.

Some troubleshooting I've already done:

- changed audio to stereo in KDE settings

- changed audio to stereo in TV settings

- reinstalled GTA

- rebooted

- system upgrade

I'm pretty much out of ideas. Is there maybe some protontricks I can try?

D7VK 1.9 is redefining how old PC games are played through Vulkan

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 1:04pm

This project follows the path of DXVK so all the legacy games running using D7VK can enjoy Vulkan's speed and advanced Direct3D features such as Full Scene Anti-Aliasing emulation which were not available at the time games where released.

You can watch an introduction about the project in the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAkvOCfeLTk&t=622s

A list of games I have tested to work with D7VK. D7VK appears to be can not work with older Wine versions as it needs updated Vulkan versions.

Deadlock issues!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 12:35pm

Hi guys! I have twice as low fps on Deadlock on Linux (CachyOS), 90-100 fps on Windows and 40-50 fps on Linux. That's pretty unplayable. Tried different launch options nothing seems to help it. Wanted to know if anyone have/had similar issue and how did you fix it, if it's even fixable. I'd like not to boot to Windows to play that one game. Thanks!

A few questions about Fedora & Steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 May 2026 - 10:11am

I switched to Linux from Win 11 two months ago, currently on Fedora 44. My setup is pretty basic, I'm using Intel I7 and Geforce 3080.

Here are my questions:

  1. When using this PC as Steam Remote Play host (and use Steam Link app on other devices), Steam Link clients always shows black screen, but client can send control to the PC. I tried turn on/off the hardware encoding and NVFBC for the host, but no luck.
  2. If I put any game on an external SSD, the game will not executed, nothing will happen after I hit the Play button, but games can be put into the external SSD, also external SSD can be used normally without problem. It just can't run games. I tried both exfat and btrfs as the format for the external SSD, they both have the same issue. I connected the external SSD via a type-a USB 3.1 port.
  3. I use controller to play sometimes, every time when I connect a controller to the PC, the system shows a confirmation message asking me if I gonna let this device to control my system. I understand that controllers acting as mouse&keyboard since this is how Steam Input works, and I like it. But can I somehow let the system to automate confirm it? I don't want to back to use the mouse to click every time I turned on a controller.

That's all. I hope those issues are solvable since I like Linux very much.

Thanks.
