Valve's response to the recent Anti Cheat Issues
I think Valve is implying that the current approach is not good enough and is being careful. Hence, VAC is not kernel-level, and I think Valve will not push more on Anti-Cheat Support unless it creates more issues.
But I do think sudden drops of support from Steam Deck require notice or something. Esp if the game is very popular or etc.

XBOX, PS5 or third party controller?
So my aging xbox360 pc controller is getting ready to be retired. It worked great but it showing its age.
Which controller should I look for?
I want the best Linux support possible, working and giving all the features in the most games possible, and I plan to use it wired.
Does the trackpad on PS5 controller have any advantage? Or is any other 3° party controller in the same price range better?
Thanks in advance.

Refresh rate feels incorrect in most situations.
Sorry for the vague title but it's an odd problem.
Every system and monitor setting I've checked so far says the display is running at 144hz. "Display settings" says this, the monitor itself says this, Steam overlay says this, even mangohud says this. I know for a fact that it is not running at this frame rate.
When using the system lightly, no gaming or anything, the refresh rate is CLEARLY not 144hz. The difference is very noticeable when opening a game like Counter Strike. If I launch the game and tab out to use the system while running the game, everything is much higher refresh rate. Goes back to being slow once I close the game again.
This would be annoying but manageable if that was the only issue, but the refresh rate is wrong for other games too. For instance, on games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring, the frame rate just feels choppy and bad. For CS2 though, the frame rate is perfect and matches up with reality.
When I got my 7800 XT, I reinstalled Kubuntu because I was previously using an NVIDIA GPU. Before reinstalling, I would get weird refresh rate issues. Like when launching a game it would completely crash my PC and restart. Upon restarting, my refresh rate would be locked to 48hz for no reason. I'm wondering if it's now locked at 48hz, but only in certain situations, and just not telling me anymore.
If anyone has experienced this and figured it out, please let me know. I haven't figured out a good way to search online for this problem, just because it's so weird and I have no idea how to word it correctly. Thanks.

I have a strategy when gaming on linux
Since most if not all single player games work on Linux, or has the possibility to work on Linux, I will use my Linux ssd for playing single player games. I am going to make a windows install on a separate drive, and then play online only. I play Fortnite zero build a lot, and cod mw3. Sometimes Valorant. I'll also do my schoolwork on Linux.
So there is my plan. I have one question though.
Do I disconnect all my drives before installing windows, except for the windows drive?
I have ubuntu on an m.2 ssd drive though. Its encrypted. But here is something that I experienced before, when removing the m.2 when it had windows on it. So I removed the windows drive that was encrypted via bit locker. With my noob skills, making it work was like a 2 hour process involving a live iso of windows, and dangerous commands. Having dyslexia made me screw up installations before, which is why i'm cautious. My ubuntu install is also encrypted, but if i remove the same m.2 where Ubuntu is installed, will it cause problems with the lux partition?

Hard System Crashing with Baldur's Gate
Hi all, I've been trying to figure this out for a while and haven't had much luck finding anything like this online, so I'm hoping you all have some ideas.
My system, after some time, will simply shutdown in the middle of gaming. It exits the the system logo with a loading circle and shuts down completely. I installed a kernel crash logger, but no luck. I don't get any kernel crash logs after this.
I've noticed this primarily with Baldur's Gate 3, but have had this happen with Warhammer 2 when I tried that game once. With Baldur's Gate, it happened mostly when leveling up my characters, respeccing with Withers. I thought it might be a memory issue so I upgraded my memory to 40gb, was 16gb before. Looks like the crashing became delayed but now instead of crashing on level up, it just randomly crashes. Reducing graphics seemed to help but still getting random crashes. It doesn't matter if I use Vulcan, DirectX, Wine GE or Proton GE. I launch using Heroic Launcher.
I'm running Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, with AMD Ryzen™ 9 6900HS and AMD Radeon™ RX 6700S and 40 gb memory.
Really scratching my head over this one, anyone have any ideas?

Game not launching (Steam)
I have been having an issue with launching slay the spire from Steam. After clicking play, it proceeds through all the normal steps of launch until reaching the "Stop" button. At which point it stalls for a second and returns to the "Play" button.
I have researched this and found other people with similar issues on the Steam subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/159ud8b/game_not_launching_on_steam/
A lot of the fixes proposed were windows specific, and I'm launching this on Linux (Ubuntu) on a low-end laptop (Integrated graphics on an i3 processor). There are no Nvidia drivers for me to re-install, I can't clear my CMOS, there is no option for AVX2 to enable.
I have tried fully uninstalling Steam and re-installing it, deleting files manually as necessary.
The game does launch if I manually launch the .exe file, however it doesn't update the cloud saves (meaning steam overwrites my save data when it attempts to sync the cloud data on launch).
I'm aware this is an issue continuously brought up online, but I haven't seen anyone with the issue specifically on Ubuntu and am seeking help.

how to get GTA 4 running with mods?
I've installled the game on my steam deck and it runs fine, then when I wanted to install some mods I first had to use the downgrader to get it to 1.0.7 patch, and then when I try to open the game through the "launchGTA4.exe" as instructed in the downgrader but when I hit play it just doesn't open the game and stops after a couple seconds, and when I try the "GTA4.exe" or "playGTA4.exe" it gives a black screen after the logo and kicks me out
I've used most proton versions and the ge ones and nothing works
I've used the Elamigos repack for 1.2.59 version
any help would be appreciated

Is there something like Lossless Scaling for Linux?
I've been using Lossless Scaling for Windows for some time now and I'm wondering if there exists a similar tool for Linux? Mainly the frame generation part.

Games getting low FPS when external TV/Monitor unplugged
I thought that this problem is solved, which I mentioned here. The workaround worked for me until I unplugged my TV from my notebook and started the games again on my notebook monitor. After a shutdown I plugged my TV to my notebook but the problem is now still there. The workaround I wrote does not help anymore. Why have some games problems with my notebook monitor? This video show what happen.
Changing the refresh rate, turn compositor on/off or switch to wayland does not help. A newer/older kernel and older/newer nvidia drivers are also not helping. The game is not locked. Running the game with/without mangohud/gamemode does not help. When the TV is plugged, the TV is the main monitor/active and the notebook monitor is deactivated/off. I'm installing the nvidia drivers with a script. Even when I purge everything and install the latest stable nvidia drivers for Debian12, the problem is the same.
By all Linux problems I encountered. This is the peak for me.
Workaround
Found the reason for the low FPS.
- sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update
- sudo apt-get install steam
Steam installing now i386 tools.
3. I install my NVIDIA Drivers with this script. During the installation procedure you can choose to install ia32-libs-1386.
add/configure ia32-libs-1386 before doing the driver install. This lets things like openGL 32 bit apps and Steam work smoothly with your 64 bit nvidia driver.
These steps solved my problem.

Please help. I can't get Star Wars outlaws to install
I have tried everything that I can and can't get it to show up. I have searched all over for an answer and cannot get it to show up. The game in question is Star Wars Outlaws. I have tried using bottles, got it to install, but it keeps crashing at start up. I have a Ryzen 7 3700x, 16 gb ram, and GTX 1660 super. All meeting the min requirements for the game.

Rtx 4080 super or rx 7900 xtx
Hello so I'm gonna build a pc soon and will most likely go with linux as OS but I'm pretty conflicted about which gpu to get one of my friends who's using arch says i should go with the 7900 xtx because nvidia has a lot of issues with linux but at the same time from what i can tell the 4080 super is more stable with higher 1% fps lows and generally slightly better performance for the same price so now i don't really know which one to go with and need some advice. I'm specifically trying to choose between the ASUS TUF Gaming 7900 xtx and the GIGABYTE windforce V2 4080 super, (if it matters at all)

DLSS Frame Generation is now available on Proton Experimental
Linuxgsm valheim server save command.
I have a dedicated server for Valheim set up through Linuxgsm. I’ve made some scripts to run as Cron jobs to auto update and back up the server on a schedule, but are there any commands I can script to make the server save itself prior to a restart? Like I want to automate that the server saves the world, then stops, updates, then turns back on.
I’ve been able to automate everything but the save part. I assume backing up isn’t the same as the server just saving changes and I don’t want progress being lost after a restart due to last auto save being too long ago.
