Gaming on Gnome
I have seen some info floating around about stutters and input lag, aswell as problems with monitors of different refresh rates etc when using Gnome.
A lot of that info is over a year old now, and a lot had happened to both Gnome and Wayland the last year.
Have anyone compared it recently to KDE? I would really like to swap from KDE just to get a more complete desktop experience without any tinkering.

How to play browndust 2 on linux mint
I've only tried this on Mint, so if you've tried it on another distro and it worked, please leave a comment.
You'll need two things for this: the Heroic Games launcher and a Discord account to download the client .exe file on the Browndust 2 server.
- Click "Add Game" on Heroic
- Click "Run Installer First" and select the client exe file.
- Select the language (I don't know if this will happen to you, but mine only shows English, the others show up as squares).
- Two windows will open. Don't click "Ok" on the Browndust 2 error, click "Install" on the Browndust 2 launcher.
After clicking "Install", wait.
After the installation is complete, close the Browndust 2 window and press "Ok" on the Browndust 2 error window.
Click on the folder symbol in the space where the selected executable is written and select the Browndust .exe file (just go Heroic/Prefixes/default/Brown dust 2/drive_c/Neowiz/Browndust2/Browndust2_10000001 and select the BrownDust ll.exe)
Now click on "Finish" and test the game (if it fails to start and an error appears as it did for me, go to the next step; otherwise, you're in luck, so go play).
Go to the game settings, scroll down and select Winetricks, click on "Open Winetricks GUI", select "Install a program" and click "OK". Now click on "Cancel". Now select "Install a windows DLL or component'" and click "OK". Now scroll until you find "Webio", select it and click "OK".
- After webio installation, open the game, select the basic settings and log in with your Google account
- Have fun
If anyone asks why the game art is different, it's because I already did it once, so I did it again for you guys to see the steps.
Ps1:One observation is that when you install webio on winetricks it works on all instances independently on where you installed, because when i opened this new browndust it showed the log in without the error
Ps2: maybe this trick can work for other gacha that require this type of log in... or not lol

How's AMD gpu VR performance on Linux?
Hi, been looking to buy a VR headset for a while now but have been hesitant because I have heard AMD gpus are not good for VR (don't know if this info is outdated or not) and also VR gaming on Linux wasn't that good historically.
Now that apparently VR is getting a lot better on the Linux side, what's the case with the AMD side of things? I have an rx 6800 and am looking to play stuff like HL Alyx, AC, ACC, DCS and other sim games mostly. And if anyone is running dual boot, how is it compared to Windows?

My dull gpu setup
First time linux gaming, CS2 bad FPS
I've been using linux for many years, but never for gaming. I've always just used dual boot windows. But it's quite annoying to switch operating systems so I'd like to be able to play games on linux.
So I downloaded Counter Strike 2 from steam today, and ran it but I was getting terrible FPS. On windows I get between 100-110 fps usually. On linux, I was getting 30-70, and it just felt unplayable. Even the menus were extremely slow and painful to navigate.
I have a ryzen 5 2600x and an rx580. I'm running fedora 41 with kde and wayland. One difference between my windows and linux setup is that on linux, because I didn't want to commit, I have installed CS2 on an NTFS formatted HDD, whereas on windows it's installed on an SSD. But surely that shouldn't affect the actual framerate, just the loading times?
So really, I'm wondering whether linux gaming is just like this, or whether I'm doing something wrong.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Proton doesn't work anymore ?
I can't really tell what happened, but suddenly Proton stopped working, and hasn't worked for a couple weeks, including through a kernel update (even using other kernels didn't solve anything).
I'm getting the same result with or without prime (so on both the iGPU and the dGPU), with any proton version including Experimental and Hotfix, and also outside of Steam (I use a little script to run Proton like Wine outside of Steam, quite handy for non-steam games.)
Anyways, when I start any game or app through proton (but not through Wine), after a few seconds - at most a minute or so -, it freezes. I can alt-tab to the desktop with no issues, everything else is perfectly fluid, but the .exe is completely frozen. It only responds to SIGKILL, not even SIGQUIT or SIGTERM. After 120 seconds, the game finally crashes, with the message "gamethread timed out waiting for renderthread"
I couldn't find anything else, even PROTON_LOG=1 didn't provide much -if any- information; and the stdout and stderr from running proton outside of Steam from the command line is empty of anything related.
I tried verifying game files, Proton files, reinstalling Proton... Nothing changes.

Low power draw and bad performance on proton
I'm running NixOS and I've always noticed bad-ish peformance on most games on proton.
I usually just ignore it but this was over the limit for me.
I'm on a Lenovo LEGION 5 Pro laptop with a 3070(8G vram), Ryzen 7 5800H, 16G ram.
Most games ran very well on windows.
I'm on the 570.133.07 drivers and I use proton GE.
What's really ticking me off is the power draw, is that normal ?
I'm using the factory issued charger brick (300W 20V) + a usb-c dock which happens to have PD.
I have the same issue running on the charger alone (no dock)

The first stable release of vangogh - a local library of DRM-free GOG.com games
It does exist a NoSteam Gaming Mode?
Been reading about Bazzite recently and I feel it would be very interesting to have a gaming mode (as a session, with the benefits) but I'm using GOG as my primary store (and Heroic as my primary launcher) and I want to avoid as much as I can using a Steam account. Reading docs it seems Steam exclusive (there's the offline mode afterwards), but does something generic exist? I've tried PegasusFE, but it's an app like the Big Picture mode.

I am not sure where else to ask so I hope here is alr. Is it possible to use a Xbox 360 Kinect as motion capture for an avatar to play in VR Chat in linux?
Hello everyone, Forgive me if this is not the right place to ask this kind of thing but I am not sure where else to ask. REcently I managed to pair my Oculus Quest 1 to my Linux macine (Linux Mint 22.1) via ALVR and been having some fun on VR Chat. It made me wonder if I can get some motion capture done to play along side VR Chat. MOst of the Motion capture tech in the market is way too much in cost but I know that the Xbox 360 Kinect has been used before in VR chat motion capture for the avatars and a used Kinect is right around my budget. I know it can be done on windows with the right software using the Kinect as a form of webcam to capture body movement but I wish to know how possible it is to be done on Linux comparitively. Has anyone attempted this before? Any advice will be apprecaited, I apologise if tis is not he right place to ask this.

Question related to 9070Xt
Is it worth finally buying one today or should I wait for the kernel 6.14 and MESA 25 to be built into distros (ie Ubuntu) before buying one. I am trying to avoid getting issues with troubleshooting since I currently use Mint on 2 PC, managed to upgraded the kernel to 6.14 and MESA 25 on one, but the other failed for some reason, keeps giving me errors.
Obviously, only one PC would get the new GPU, but is it too soon to jump in and not expect some hiccups?
Thanks.

HDR support in Ubuntu 25.04.?
Hello guys. I have recently made a post here complaining about the lack of HDR support in Ubuntu. People were kind of mean and unhelpful.
HOWEVER, I have just read that apparently, Ubuntu 25.04. is going to offer HDR support?
In that case, does that mean I should just wait a bit and I am going to be able to use HDR with no issues?
I am on Ubuntu 24.04.. As far as I know, 25.04. releases in a week?
Do you think I should be able to just wait a week and then I'll be able to use HDR? Or do I have to search for another solution?

Crash N. Sane trilogy has issues with aspect ratio when loading levels or overworld
Hi guys, I started playing Crash N.Sane trilogy on my linux machine since a couple days ago. It works perfectly out of the box and all, except for one small detail: when loading a level or the overworld, there seems to be an issue with the aspect ratio. It's important to note, I think, I'm playing it on a laptop with a 1080p screen, but at 720p resolution. I turned off v-sync cause that caused it to change aspect ratio even when playing.
The distro is Arch Linux on the Zen kernel, the game's from steam and I'm running it via the latest Protonge. I have plenty of ram (16GB) and vram (8GB). What could the issue be? Is it a known problem? Do you know a fix?
Here's a video with what the issue looks like, note that when it returns to full screen it's me toggling it, if I don't do anything it stays as if it were full screen but only with a 720p area visible

I'm doing my part!
Any way to add custom info to Mangohud?
I have a script that displays my controller's battery charge. Is there any way to print it's output in Mangohud bar? Googled it myself, found nothing

I have a Steam deck but....(first post, just joined)
I have been using it a lot as a backup. Working on getting another desktop. Recently I have been using Prism launcher for Minecraft and never had an issue until now. It just wont launch anymore. The one that worked is 1.21.4 and I found .5 is out but its not updating that either. Offline is till the same. I didn't change anything. Totally lost. Thanks in advance
