Other News about gaming on Linux

Finally switched over to Linux (Debian 13). Played Doom Eternal today. I have a few questions about CPU & GPU temps on a laptop...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 8 Mar 2026 - 1:59am

I've wanted to do this for a long time but overall I'm more of a console gamer (except for Minecraft and FPS games). Tested Debian 12 on a crappy laptop last year and finally last week installed Debian 13 on my, much better, gaming laptop.

It's been pretty good overall. Debian itself runs great. Nvidia drivers installed as intended. Steam install went ok. I'm pretty happy.

I have one game I can't get to run right now (Age of Mythology) which is weird because it does run on Debian 12. Hopefully I can figure that one out at some point.

I do have a question about CPU and GPU temps though. Playing Doom Eternal today both the CPU and GPU were in the low 60C. The game ran great but I didn't really mess with the video settings. I do know that it was 1080p, at least. It probably defaulted to medium or something. I don't know for sure.

I don't really want this to run hotter but I'm wondering if I'm losing some potential power somewhere and wondering how I can really control the GPU on Linux. I'm fine with how Doom ran but I did have to turn the resolution down on another game (the Kingdom Hearts games) to get a smooth 60fps (it's only a 60hz display so that's fine).

Any tips or maybe packages I can install to potentially get those games to run a little better? I'm still new to Linux overall and I've never really worried about fps or videos settings much so I don't really know where to look for guides.

Vr on Linux is a mess! And I'm sick of it (For Non-Quest Users)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 11:29pm

For the past 2 years Ive been trying to switch to linux full time, but EVERY time i try too, Vr is the one thing that holds me back!

No matter what I try (Different mondao configurations, upgrading my headset, upgrading my hardware) Nothing seems to fix the following issues!

- Input delay

- Warping (On the vive pro 1, Fixed when i switched to the index)

- Terrible stutters

- Non working version of steam vr

- Performance issues in games like vrchat

- lack of documentation for older devices like the index, and vive pro 1

I completely understand that its a community effort, and that alot of these issues might be resolved when the vive frame comes out. But i just want to know if its just me experiencing these issues! or if there is something wrong I'm doing.

My specs are:

Ryzen 7 5700x3d

Rx 5700xt

32gb of ddr4

Barely getting 100 FPS in CS2 after switching from Windows 10 to Fedora and upgrading my PC. I'm tired of tinkering. Please help.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 11:09pm

I will try to keep this simple to explain:

My specs before upgrade:

  • Ryzen 3600 + 6650XT + 16GB 3200Mhz + Windows 10

My current upgrade:

  • Ryzen 7 5700X + 9060XT 16GB + 32GB 3200Mhz + Fedora

I installed Fedora for the first time, installed CS2 and had about less than 200 FPS in CS2, which is what I was getting in my previous system, and I know with this system I should be having way more FPS.

I figured I needed to install some drivers or whatever, so I asked botGPT (and yes i know it's not fully reliable, but still good to point me in the right directions) and it told me to run:

sudo dnf update

sudo dnf install mesa-vulkan-drivers mesa-dri-drivers vulkan

and then it asked to run lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D' to see if I'd get this result: kernel driver in use: amdgpu and I did.

Then it asked told me to run cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor to see if it said powersave or performance, and if it said powersave, I had to switch to performance, which I did (but I just checked it again and it is in powersave now, probably after I restarted PC).

Then the bot told me to switch from wayland to x11, and I don't even know what that is and this is where the bot started failing me, because it was telling me how to change it but there was nothing when I followed the steps.

Also, Steam keeps running CS2 after I close the game in-game. The icon in the taskbar goes away but steam says the game is still running. I have to manually go to my library and press "Stop". It doesn't happen with other games. Why?

I have more problems with Fedora but will leave it to another post in a different subreddit. Right now I just wanna fix the FPS issue. I really don't wanna go back to Windows 10.

Any help is appreciated!

Sonic crossworlds will run but doesn't appear

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 10:28pm

I have been trying to run Sonic Crossworlds and it runs but I see nothing on the screen changes except for play button on steam changes to stop button. I let it be for minutes but the game still not appearing. I tried to change proton version but nothing changed. when I close the game through steam it shows this error.

I use EndeavourOS, I had no issue before with the game I played for more than 15 hours.

I have searched on X and here to see if the game has any issue with others but I didn't find anyone complaining.

which distro is best for gaming in a laptop with iGPU????

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 9:50pm

Hi, I am new to Linux distros and i tired fedora KDE, fedora, and mint(cinnamon). The thing is that i can't play RDR2 in Linux but some how am able to play it in windows 11. And getting a frame rate about 30fps or more while playing in low settings 720p on windows 11. But other games work like Hollow Knight Silksong, FIFA 17 work like how it used to be on windows 11 but the RDR2 cant. Also the RDR2 is a fitgirl repack because i cant afford it on steam (its like my 10 days paycheck without spending any of it on food and all for just so i can buy RDR2).

I tried lutris and heroic game launcher even win boat but it cant play it. the game will open and all but when i enter into story mode it take too much time to load like 2-3min and it shows a frame for 15 second and 2 second frame for 15 seconds like that. i tried winetricks but still faced that same issue. i thought maybe the vulkan in game settings causing the issues so i changed it to directX 12 and restarted the game. now it wont even open. Even on vulkan game settings my laptop crashs if i tried to close the game.

the game is launching to loading menu but the gameplay is where i face this issue.

Is the Distro is the issue or should install some more drivers so it can play. or some winetrick i didnt found on YT.

i want some help. i been trying to switch to linux for many times but this thing keep me rolling back to windows 11.

my laptop is HP Elitebook 845 G8

Ryzen 7 5850U

16gb 2664mhz ram (1x16)

256gb nvme

no GPU it runs on iGPU(Amd Radeon RX Vega 8) i think it is.

how do i get my dualsense to work in fallout new vegas?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 9:40pm

on windows i'd usually be able to do this with ds4windows but i'm on linux so i can't do that.

i'm using heroic games launcher with the gog version of new vegas. i tried adding a steam shortcut but the controller still didn't work. i know i could probably just add the exe as a non steam game but i still want to use heroic launcher for it's save syncing option

Installing Medal on Zorin/Ubunth

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 9:29pm

Hello everyone, I have been trying to get Medal (Medal.tv) to work on ZorinOSA (I believe it's based on Ubuntu?) but I haven't had any luck! I tried Bottles, Lutris, Adding it as a non-steam game, and straight up Wine, none worked so far! Bottles is the most promising since it goes up until "Processing installer steps" but it doesn't ever go beyond that saying "There was an error while installing the application. Check the setup log" When I do try to open the setup log nothing happens? Not sure how to fix this. I don't really want to use any other app if it isn't like Medal, so OBS is out of tge question.

Weird issue when playing minecraft homestead modpack on linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 9:10pm

So for context, i got Linux Mint Latest 22.3 Cinnamon yesterday from switching from windows. I am on a Asus tuf gaming A15 (Nvidia gpu and amd cpu) Laptop. I use prism minecraft launcher, with the modpack Homestead (1.20.1 Fabric) So i am trying to play on a bisect hosting server with the same modpack. Whenever i join the game with anything above 2 chunks render distance and 5 chunks simulation distance i instantly freeze and it inevitably crashes. If i join with that, i can get into the game and play well, then i can turn it back up again and that works well, but when i walk around i randomly crash. My other friend who also runs Linux (Dont know exact distro but i know it isnt mint) does not have this issue. Please help. Ive tried reinstalling the modpack( did three times and did not work)

I have searched this up with no answer. If there is anything more i need to add tell me, please help me.

Steam fails to launch Linux version on separate BTRFS ssd

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 8:42pm

Hi, I'm running Fedora KDE, using the native steam from the third party repo (not flatpack). I have two partitions, a small ssd with OS files, and a dedicated 1To SSD to install my games.
The game SSD is a single btrfs partition, mounted on startup.

Steam is able to write and install games on this partition, but fails to launch them when using the native linux version. (Windows games using Proton work fine, somehow). When switching the install to my OS ssd, it runs fine, so I think of a permission issue. I tried chmod 777 -R on the game directory, but it still fails.

When running steam from terminal and launching the game i get this error :
"Failed to execute child process ?/mnt/GamingSSD/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Slay the Spire 2/SlayTheSpire2? (Permission denied)"

I'm still a bit new to Linux, so what permissions are missing that are not given by chmod 777 ?

I did search, but when people encounter similar problems, most of the time it's because of using the flatpack version of steam, or an NTFS partition.

Thanks for your time !

How can I tweak my game settings on Linux the same way I do with the NVIDIA Control Panel on Windows?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 8:14pm

My power supply, GPU, and monitor are a bit unreliable, so I used to compensate by enabling Fast Sync, Reflex Boost, and a 120 FPS cap. I'm currently using Linux Mint and playing games through Steam without tweaking the game settings, but lately some newer games crash or show screen tearing because of my hardware. Because of this, I want to use the same methods I used before, but I don't know how to replicate them on Linux. Is it possible to do this on Linux Mint, or do I need a different distro?

New to linux and looking for a distro for gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 7 Mar 2026 - 7:16pm

I'm a windows user but been interested in Linux for a while and have dip my toe barely. I've played briefly with pop and mint os and even run a Minecraft server of it. So I know a little bit how to navigate a little.

I wanted to challenge myself by trying Linux for 1 month since I've been interested in it but never really givi it a proper try

My questions are,

1- As a windows user and fairly inexpensive with Linux, what distro do you recommen?

2- Any tips and/or tricks for a "new" user ?

3- What to do and what not to do ?

4- What are the things I should avoid ?

I would really appreciate any advice this community could give me
