Counter-Strike 2 - Windows 11 vs Nobara 40 Performance Comparison

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 16:01
Introduction

So I was bored and decided to check the performance of Counter-Strike 2 between Windows and Linux (Nobara). Software

Specifications Hardware
  • 5800X3D
  • 6800 XT
  • 4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL18
Software
  • Nobara 40 GNOME w/ MESA 24.1.6
  • Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Build 22631 w/ AMD Adrenaline AFMF2 Preview Driver (24.20.01.02)
Benchmark Test 1 - Workshop FPS benchmark

Ran THIS benchmark map on both OSes.

Results: Test 2 - Inferno Wingman Results: Comparison Final words

To be honest I am just bored and wanted to test out the performance between the two OSes. I notice on Linux that whenever I am in a gunfight that the mouse input slows down, feels like I am moving the mouse through mud or something. That might not be apparant from the numbers alone but it is really weird and makes it almost impossible for me to micro-adjust the aim during a fight :(. We can conclude that CS2 indeed runs pretty well on Linux (except the weird mouse input slowdown during fights), but I am not smart enough to analyze the results any further. But I hope that someone somewhere may find these numbers interesting.

Steam doesn’t recognize Bluetooth controller, but OS does

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 15:39

Hi all,

I have a fresh install of Nobara 40 on a newly built PC. I’ve managed to mount all SSDs and Steam can recognize them. Nobara’s Bluetooth easily detects my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, but Steam only detects it when plugged into the case via USB.

I’m hoping someone can help me get Steam to recognize the controller via Bluetooth.

Thanks.

Client side ACs are needed (most of the time)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 15:34

TLDR: Server side ACs and ML are not reliable and cheap as Client Side ACs.

First, I'm not a native english speaker, so I'll update this post as time goes on to fix any grammatical/syntax error.

I'm game dev. Actually, I'm a game engine developer, I don't actually create games, but I develop the tech behind it.

I don't write ACs, but I'll explain briefly why client side ACs are needed: every competite game write their network stack based on Server Authoritive architecture (a good article about Server Authority architecture and what problem solves: https://www.gabrielgambetta.com/client-server-game-architecture.html)

Briefly, the client it's "dummy" and it's just the server that makes the player move, and that already prevents cheat that affect other client and the game world it self.

The only cheats that are impossible to valide server side are wallhacks, aimbots and ESP. And that's because of Client Prediction (read the article I mentioned before to understand WHAT is and WHY we need Client Prediction)

Client side ACs are trying to prevent this using different techniques.

That's it.

Now, I don't support nor like Kernel Level ACs, but they are "stronger" than userspace ACs so we have to use them.

In fact, it's more likely to encounter hackers on games using userspace space ACs than kernel level ACs.

Now, some of you might mention the use ML on the server to detect cheaters, and it's actually a solution, but they're not as reliable nor cheap as client side ACs.

Black Myth: Wukong | Steam Deck (OLED) Performance Test | Low vs Medium vs High vs Ultra | Benchmark

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 15:29

I've tested the performance of various graphical presets for Black Myth: Wukong on the Steam Deck OLED, and here are my findings:

  • Low preset (FSR 75% and FG: On): ~45-55 FPS
  • Low preset (FSR 75% and FG: Off): ~31-40 FPS
  • Low preset (FSR 90% and FG: Off): ~30-37 FPS
  • Medium preset (FSR 75% and FG: On): ~38-48 FPS
  • Medium preset (FSR 75% and FG: Off): ~25-31 FPS
  • Medium preset (FSR 90% and FG: Off): ~18-28 FPS
  • High preset (FSR 75% and FG: On): ~25-31 FPS
  • High preset (FSR 75% and FG: Off): ~16-19 FPS
  • High preset (FSR 90% and FG: Off): ~13-17 FPS
  • Very High preset (FSR 75% and FG: On): ~15-22 FPS
  • Very High preset (FSR 75% and FG: Off): ~9-13 FPS
  • Very High preset (FSR 90% and FG: Off): ~8-10 FPS
  • Cinematic preset (FSR 75% and FG: On): ~10-14 FPS
  • Cinematic preset (FSR 75% and FG: Off): ~6-7 FPS
  • Cinematic preset (FSR 90% and FG: Off): ~6-7 FPS

Overall, the game runs okay on the Steam Deck, but only on the Low or Medium settings with frame generation turned on.

I recommend playing on the Low preset, FSR at 75%, FG: On and a locked 45 FPS or at the Medium preset (FSR 75% and FG: On) with a locked 30 FPS for the best experience. If you want to conserve battery life, you can lock the framerate to 30 FPS on the Low settings (FSR 75% and FG: On).

What are your thoughts? Has anyone else played Black Myth: Wukong on the Steam Deck? If so, what graphical settings did you use?

Feel free to ask any questions.

TF2 has black screen on startup + ridiculous performance on fullscreen start-up

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 14:27

hello, i'm trying to play tf2 and i'm running across very weird problems. when i launch the game, i am stuck on either a black screen or my hud's loading screen, even though it worked before. and so i just fall onto an infinite loading loop where nothing happens.

on top of that, when i launch it on fullscreen my system is acting extremely weirdly so i have to launch it in windowed mode, altough that has always been a problem. i've tried different solutions found across the internet but they don't seem to work, probably because the vast majority of them are from about 10 years or so. i tried with both Vulkan and OpenGL and they always give the same outputs.

it's weird because, again, it worked before... i have the latest nvidia drivers too so i'm rather confused. does anyone have any ideas on what i should do? thanks in advance, cheers :)

MS Flight Simulator - mouse glitching

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 14:26

Hello, I have Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition on Steam, but I have issues with playing it, when I click any UI element in menu or 3D element in cocpit my mouse is not always registering clicks, I have to click like 20 times to register one click, its really annoying, it happens in menu too.

I use Arch Linux, and I tried different Proton versions like default, Experimental and GE-Proton 9.9, I even tried launch options like "gamemoderun %command% PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 -FastLaunch" but nothing helped so far, does anybody have similar issue?

Need help with Switch Pro Controller's motion and Cemu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 13:14

Hey! Recently started daily-driving Mint 22.

I've been having issues with setting up motion with Nintendo controllers. First, of course, I figured out that Switch Pro Controller doesn't work straight out of the box - fixed via dkms module. Then I found out I need joycond - fine, installed. However I can't seem to get anything "cemuhook" working.

First I tried joycond-cemuhook of course. After fiddling with it it for a while, I managed to build and run it and yet to no avail - it hasn't detected the controller! I did manage to get it working ONCE, for some inexplicable reason it decided it's time to start working out the blue and stopped working again, and I never got it working since.

https://preview.redd.it/0chiwbq5dekd1.png?width=1376&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed1c12fe4ff5476d1c5c6b148b2f6eb6762b18f1

Then I tried evdevhook2, only to find out it's passing no actual input to the DSU Controller input thing, so I assume it's only motion. That begs the question - how in the world am I supposed to even use it then?

I then stumbled on a solution that ditches hid-nintendo completely, but decided not to go through with it before actually getting advice.

To be frank, I got no idea what I'm doing, and although it's a very enjoyable learning experience I'm afraid I'm going to break something. So, need advice!

What distro should I install on my old laptop?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 10:10

Hey guys, so there's this laptop I bought back in 2020 to use it during the pandemic. It lasted a few years, but now it's broken and I have a much better PC anyway. I was thinking of resurrecting it as a Linux machine, which one would be the best distro for this computer? It's got 8GB of RAM and a dual core excavator AMD APU

Gaming is not so good, do you experience it, too?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 08:35

Linux is ready for gaming, YouTube is full of these videos, so I got back and tried it once more, and I am experiencing issues. I am curious, do others encounter that?

Now I am on fully up-to-date Ubuntu 24.04, with kernel 6.10.6 also Mesa 24.2, I have a full AMD system which are allegedly good for Linux use. GPU is RX 7700 also 32GB RAM. Steam is installed as .deb package, not a Snap.

I tried to run AC:Valhalla, this one is completely unplayable, although it launches, and I can play for a few minutes, after that, it COMPLETELY crashes the whole system every time I try to play the game. (proton version does not matter, tried a few).

Snowrunner - my current favorite, although it launches and can be played on max settings at same fps as windows, in reality it's unplayable, input latency of camera movements is INSANE. Super floaty. I cannot stand the controls, and sensitivity seems all messed up. Also, micro stutters are super annoying. (proton version does not matter)

Same with No man sky, Satisfactory, Deep Rock Galactic, Elite Dangerous - games do run, and pretty well at that, but input latency is just insane, making games completely unplayable.

Warframe surprisingly, has no input latency at all and feels identical to windows.

War thunder(native) - although it plays okay, it looks bury, washed out, super hard to spot enemies. On Windows, it's crisp and sharp...

I don't understand, how can that experience be considered playable? I want to make Linux my gaming platform, but as it is, I can't do anything but to us Windows for gaming.

Why Can't I Download GTA: San Andreas from Steam?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 06:15

I've searched the internet for an answer to this question, and asked ChatGPT. I am unable to install Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (1.0, not Definitive Edition), the "Install" button is grayed out. I had Proton enabled for all games, and have tried switching between Experimental, 9.0-2, and 3.7-8 to see if they would allow me to download the game- No luck.

I feel like I must be missing something obvious. Thanks for your help in advance!

Elden ring problems with dualshock 4 controller

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 02:28

Ive tried big picture mode, steams built in playstation controller support, both wired and bluetooth connection, etc.

Basically what is happening is with steamplay enabled, my controller does sorta work, but the buttons arent doing the correct things. For exanple, my left stick doesnt move my character around, it instead switches my items around (like the d-pad does)

OBS Replay Buffer & Mouse Skipping/Lagging

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 02:09

after 3 Days of Trial and error trying to Figure out whats Causing my Mouse to Skip/Lag Even though FPS is Will above 90, i figured that is was OBS, Just having it obs open Causes this issue,

So when obs is on and recording (when not recording problem is there but less noticeable) and i play a game that makes my GPU reach 100% or close to it, my mouse starts skipping so hard until GPU goes back to normal, i play on 120 fps hard locked either from Steam or in game, so most of the time GPU is at 70~80%, but i don't want to lose a fight because my mouse skipped, and at the same time don't want to lose my Replay buffer.

i faced a similar issue on Windows but window put whatever i was doing over obs, so instead of my mouse lagging, the recording would be lagging for the time my GPU was 100%,
i tried making OBS to low priority in System Monitor but that didn't help.

is there a way to fix this ?
either doing what windows does, and make the recording lagging instead of my mouse, or maybe some settings in obs that uses less GPU.

i don't know if using the CPU encoder is good since when i load a new game or a new area in a game i see my CPU at 100% i assume its compiling shaders, and i don't want anything interrupting that my CPU is bad enough.

specs:
OS: Linux Mint 22 x86_64
Host: B550 AORUS ELITE
Kernel: 6.8.0-41-generic
Shell: bash 5.2.21

[SOLVED] Lunar Client breaks on encrypted home folder

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 01:27

I found out that Lunar Client cannot launch Minecraft if the home folder is encrypted, and I have tested this by making 2 VMs with the EXACT SAME config but one has encrypted folder, the other doesn't. Minecraft Launcher works fine tho, for some reason. The Lunar launcher works fine, but when I want to actually start playing the game, it stays in the Building Cache state for a few minutes then either says it just couldn't load Minecraft or Minecraft ran out of memory or smth like that and it says I should give it 4GB of RAM but I already did that.

I had the same issue cause with a noise suppression program, and a workaround was found in this github issue. I was wondering if there was a way to do something similar to that for Lunar Client, I moved the AppImage to /opt/ and tried to change the .minecraft game directory to a /fakehome/ folder I made in / but Lunar said it couldn't access it.

If that's even useful I'm running Mint 22 Cinnamon.

That's all I wrote before I found the solution thanks to a gigachad on Lunar Client's Discord server in community help: I needed to create a symlink (if you don't know what it is or how to do it, take a look at this) to change the .lunarclient path to a path that isn't encrypted. You can either put the new .lunarclient in a folder you create in / to avoid /home, or put it in another disk, which is what I did (don't ask me why, and btw it's not better or anything). Since Lunar wants to access .lunarclient in /home/myrealname/.lunarclient, I did this: ln -s /media/myrealname/Samsung_HDD/Users/Myrealname/.lunarclient /home/myrealname/.lunarclient. Changing the .minecraft path is not necessary (ofc, otherwise Minecraft Launcher would've also been broken).

Good, Linux-friendly gaming mouse?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. August 2024 - 00:39

Hi there! A bit of a weird question, but... Maybe you can recommend me something? Right now I have wired Logi G503 mouse, but every time I want to change something, change colors, etc. I have to spin up Windows VM to modify this in G Hub software. Which is annoying to say the least. So I'm looking for replacement. My conditiones sine quibus non are: - about 2400-2800 DPI wigh high polling rate - at least 3 additional, programmable buttons (no more than 5) - pretty big and heavy - RGB is optional, but if there's one, I'd like it to be compatible with OpenRGB - inbuilt memory, so I can configure it and not have to have the software opened in the background all the time for it to work properly - configuration software available both for Windows and Linux

Bonus points if it's wireless. Can you recommend me something, that will satisfy the needs? Thanks guys!
