Issues with kisnt kn85

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 18:48

Just got the kisnt kn85 keyboard today and the manual it came with said that the F keys can be used for brightness, media control, volume, etc. when you press FN + corresponding key, however it's doing that regardless of if I press the FN key or not

For example, FN + F1 lowers screen brightness, however if I press F1 it lowers screen brightness and if I press FN+F1 it lowers screen brightness. I wasn't seeing anything about an "FN lock" or anything like that

Gamedev on Linux is awesome!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 17:33

I'm a solo indie dev, and a couple weeks ago, I decided to make the jump to Linux. What pushed me over the edge? Microsoft's BS. One Drive kept on uploading and downloading random files, Windows 10 is gonna be shut down, Windows 11's AI garbage that I'd have to put up with when forced to switch, annoying updates, and more. I decided to try out Mint Cinnamon, and it's AMAZING.

Most of the gamedev software that I use is available on Linux. Godot is my engine of choice, and I know the Linux version will be in good hands since many of the Godot devs prefer Linux. Fire Alpaca was the art program I used, and while it is available on Linux, I've decided to jump to Krita while I'm at it because Fire Alpaca is a bit limited. When it comes to audio, I basically just use Audacity, which works great on both OSes. For video editing, I was using CapCut. I haven't really edited a video since I switched, but Flowblade is the editor that I'm gonna try out because it looks easy to use. I haven't done much 3D modeling yet, but I learned a bit of Blender a month or two ago and I think it's safe to say that I'll be using it once I start making more complex 3D games.

Most Windows games I've ran on Linux have actually had better performance, except for mine. I've ran them using both Wine and Proton through Steam, but they tend to drop frames seemingly at random. Because of this, I decided to port my upcoming game called "Comet Rogue" to Linux! I was afraid at first, and I did have to fix some very unexpected issues, but overall actually exporting a Linux build in Godot was very easy. This also forced me to learn how to support multiple OSes in SteamWorks, so that's another benefit to my Linux switch. The Linux version runs far better than the Windows one did, even on Windows. I'm also able to use a GPU screen recorder to get flawless 60FPS footage, even when there's a ton of enemies and bullets on screen!

In short, I'm excited to continue using Linux and to release my first Linux game! If you wanna check it out, here's a link to it's Steam page. It's a chaotic mining roguelike inspired by Risk of Rain and Motherload, and it releases very soon! Thanks for reading!

Vulkan does not work (Nvidia + Fedora)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 16:50

Hey guys, I need some help. I wanna play Beamng drive. It has two versions: Direct3D and Vulkan. It has native support for Linux, a Binary file which runs the game with Vulkan. When I run that, it says "Beamng is not responding", and there's no way to make it work. The game also has the normal .exe file, which can be run on steam with proton. (by adding it as a non-steam game, even if it's installed on steam, so that's another problem). When I run that, it opens a launcher to choose which version to run. When I select Vulkan, the same thing as before happens, but Direct3D opens as normal. The thing is that Direct3D is very heavy and the game runs at 30 fps, while on Vulkan it should be 60.

I use Fedora 41 (so wayland and gnome), with Nvidia proprietary drivers (i think, downloaded in their repo).

Wayland + 3090 problems

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 16:18

Is there a issue with wayland and 3090's specifically? Most people say how well nvidia and wayland play together now, but not for me. I am running the latest drivers (570.124.04), and kernel (6.13.6), on endevourOS with KDE 6.3. The main issue I have is that at seemingly random times, one of my 2 monitors will just lock up (system still sees it, anything on it is 'running', I can even move my cursor into it, but the image stops updating). I used to be able to fix it quickly by swapping to another tty and back, but now that just results in a black screen and X cursor. So far as I can tell, the only fix is a reboot.

Anyone's CS2 freezing while playing [Every match?]

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 14:45

I have been playing CS natively (No Proton) on Linux for couple months now and have had no issues, but since last night, every deathmatch I get into, about 2-3 minutes in, when someone kills me, it just freezes.

I have to kill the process, as I cannot click 'STOP' in Steam GUI.

Wondering if anyone is having similar issue.

Bad PC can do chunks even better now

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 14:38

Now you can have an unreasonably high render distance even on a Raspberry Pi.

*I think I have to note that the DH chunks are not real and just show a low Level Of Detail render of the chunks. Still looks gorgeous on screenshots though.

Linux should never be as popular as we want it to be.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 13:11

Capitalism repeats itself. Something rebellious or created in opposition to a dominant force emerges, gets cult-following and then becomes heavily commercialized and capitalized upon. That is just how corporations do things.

If Linux was to finally be widely used, mega corpos would do the best as they could to shove down our throats their products and bloat somehow and we'd be forced to swallow. It was like that with a bunch of shit: the punk movement, the midia depiction of anarchism and even simple stuff like ripped jeans. Basically, anything that came from the lower classes of society that became big things in western/southern world culture.

Yes, I would love to have ease of access to all my steam library. Yes, I would love be able to use any application I could wish for in my system without hassle. But we need to recognize that if Linux is to eventually be as big as we want it, then, in some degree, we're gonna be giving away control of our systems.

And no, there isn't a "oh but we can write script thing here that will block the blablalbglalbla" or bullshit. Corporations are not stupid. They'll find a way around whatever roadblocks we put in their way 99% of the time. Don't pretend like money doesn't buy everything.

TL;DR: if linux becomes a strong force in the market then mega corpos will take a hold of it and all goes to shit.

Also, I know I sounded harsh here and there in my way of speaking, but lets all keep civil to eachother at the comments. I'm not trying to start a fight here or attack anyone in any personal manner. I am simply expressing my thoughts and am willing to hear other people out.

Which distro would you use and why?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. März 2025 - 12:45

I heard that a new SteamOS version is coming and that it will have a desktop. I also heard that a new Steam controller is going to be released and also a VR headset called Deckard. I’m running Garuda Linux Dr460nized Gaming Edition now.

Should I install the new SteamOS when it is released or should I stay with Garuda?

What would you have done? And why?

My rig is 4th gen i7.
