Proton issues with old laptop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 21:16

I dusted an old laptop and installed linux on it to give it some life. I also wanted to play some old classics on it. I don't think the games I'm trying to get on there have linux native versions. I installed them with their dvd onto my windows PC and then transfered them with usb to my laptop. Then installed steam and added them as non-steam games to steam for them to go through proton and i checked they do have proton support. I also tried installing brawlhalla to test things, and it ran really poorly. I think it's probably because proton uses dxvk and neither of the GPUs support vulkan. It might be driver issues. While installing steam i chose lib32-nouveau something.
And I've been pulling my hair out using Lutris and Heroic. I'm new to linux and i don't know if i'll stay on it. I got Arch with KDE Plasma if that's needed info.
These are my specs:

MSI GE620

Intel Core i5-2410M - Intel HD 3000

Geforce GT540M with 1GB DDR3

8GB of DDR3 RAM

TL;DR:
First time installing linux on an old laptop. non-steam games don't work. steam games run poorly. Tried Lutris and Heroic and Wine, none worked. it might be a Vulkan support issue or just a driver issue in general. I'm scared of installing drivers since I've reinstalled 3 times because of them already.

Help me. thanks. and sorry for my bad england.

I want to hunt down and skin the person who gave me the idea to install linux

Total Linux noob here, what distro should I use if I'm mostly interested in Steam (& GOG) games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 20:27

As the title says, I've recently got a "gaming" laptop for a good price, and I've wanted to try Linux for a while now. I mostly use it to write and play games, as well as browse the internet. What distro would you suggest I install?

AMD GPU problem - freeze in game / ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 20:07

I have PowerColor red devil AMD RX 5700 XT, and I get freezes in game - driver is crashing out , I can hear the audio but the screen is frozen , sometimes it recovers but most of the time it stays frozen or it will crash my system too and I will have to log in back from tty or restart my PC. In 1 of my games World of Warcraft I resolved the issue by setting different Clock speeds and voltages for the P-States via LACT. The default settings were like this:
GPU P-State 2 2024MHz 1181mV
GPU P-State 1 1412MHz 793mV
GPU P-State 0 800MHz 750mV
and what resolved my issue in World of Warcraft was setting it like this:
GPU P-State 2 1850MHz 1050mV
GPU P-State 1 1550MHz 900mV
GPU P-State 0 1250MHz 800mV
but however when I play Witcher 3 (which uses my GPU more, because WOW is CPU dependent more) it freezes after 30min or 1 hour max and I cannot get it to work. The journalctl usually gives me errors like these when the game freezes (it is from an earlier date but it's the same always the freeze happens):
Sep 09 04:45:17 archlinux steam[5676]: err:winevulkan:signaller_worker wait timed out with non-empty poll list.

Sep 09 04:45:20 archlinux steam[5676]: err:winevulkan:signaller_worker wait timed out with non-empty poll list.

Sep 09 04:45:24 archlinux kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, but soft recovered

So sometimes it soft recovers but in most cases it fails and I end up with frozen screen or my system crashes too. My GPU never goes over 80 degrees, so it is not a temperature issue. I have tried other linux distributions: cachyOS, bazzite, zorinOS and everywhere it is the same thing so different kernels and older versions of proton do not help. mesa, lib32-mesa, vulkan-radeon (amd-vlk is not installed), lib32-vulkan-radeon, xf86-video-amdgpu are installed and I think I am not missing anything else that is important. I also added some kernel flags like : amdgpu.powerplay=1 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 amdgpu.noretry=0 amdgpu.lock_timeout=1000 pcie_aspm=off, but they did not help either. I have tried some tests with superposition-benchmark and had no issue or any problem, I also tried the stability tests with OCCT on 3D Adaptive all mods (steady, variable and switch each was running 1 hour) and I had no errors, I tested the VRAM also with OCCT for 1 hour and no errors. Anyone else have problem like mine and how did you manage to solve it ? Any suggestions?

Stellaris DLC on linux Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 19:26

Hey everyone I've been trying to pirate the Stellaris DLC on linux, I want to use proton since alot of stellaris mods break on native linux due to incorrect file structure (Caps in name and such) i tried using a tool called creamLinux installer which worked for my hoi4 dlc for native linux but when it came to stellaris it used SmokeAPI and just did not work at all, I then tried using CreamAPI that I got from a friend that worked for him on windows but it still just did not work for me on linux, any ideas?

After 1.5 years of development on my 3D Metroidvania, Maseylia: Echoes of the Past is coming to Kickstarter on October 1st! An early demo is already available on Linux!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 18:14

After a year and a half of development, I’m excited to announce that Maseylia: Echoes of the Past, my 3D metroidvania project, will be launching on Kickstarter on October 1st.

The Kickstarter’s goal is to extend development and make the game more ambitious:

  • A more developed combat system with new weapons and powers
  • Enhanced animations for smoother gameplay
  • More content and areas to explore
  • More time to polish the game for the best possible experience

The core of Maseylia remains: an atmospheric 3D metroidvania focused on exploration, freedom of movement, and sequence breaking.

⚠️ The game will also release on Linux and Mac. This is already planned and will not be part of the Kickstarter objectives.

👉 Kickstarter link (please follow the project — it really helps before launch!)
👉 Steam page link (wishlist if you’d like to support the game there too!)

i opened my pc today and steam needed to update so i let it do its thing.
after it finished, i tried opening steam but it didnt show up, i checked system monitor and its showing that steam is currently running. Opening games using shortcuts didnt work either.

i went ahead and tried to launch steam from terminal, and it was giving me a gtk module warning thing, so i search online, and went to comment the line that was giving me problems.

now when i tried running steam via terminal again, it outputs this message, and its just stuck there.

steam steam.sh[4717]: Running Steam on cachyos rolling 64-bit steam.sh[4717]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically

trying to reinstall steam didnt work, downgrading steam didnt work either

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS (16) @ 4.55 GHz

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 17:10

So I recently started using CachyOs (for gaming) and I kinda of miss the good old Nvidia App, I was making some research and I can’t find anything about it? Like I know Nvidia X Linux is still not that good but, I wanted to know if there’s a way to install the Nvidia App not only to update the drivers but to optimize games graphics

New NVidia driver: 580.82.09

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 16:47

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/254126/

  • Updated the driver to fall back to 8 BPC when 10 BPC output is not supported for a particular mode. This prevents some HDMI displays from showing a black screen.

Pretty boring overall, no DX12 sadge

Division 2 over Lutris through Ubisoft Connect

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 10. September 2025 - 16:29

Hi,

Im trying to run the Division 2 on my setup here but performance is absolutely terrible because of some strange super low utlizations.
Setup is 12700k with a 4080S on Fedora 42 KDE with kernel 6.15.x

I tried different proton version from the standard Lutris Proton, Proton (Exp) to some GE version like 10-10 and 10-15 but fps is constantly hovering around 50-60 which is just unplayable.
For comparison, on Windows this setup runs this at like 150fps.

What are some things I might be able to try that would improve this?
It seems to be some utilization issue because when in-game I'm seeing CPU utilization hovering at around 20% while GPU sits at around only 50% while pulling 80W of power, on a GPU which should pull 320W...

Everything should be fully updated driverwise.

Thanks!
