Linux gaming performance

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 19:27

I'm planning to try out Linux. Maybe Arch, initially I had doubts that it was not gonna support most games. However I see wine and proton addresses that for most part. I was almost convinced to switch until I saw YouTube videos of comparisons between Nobara 39 and Nobara 40 with Win 11. The performance hit seems significant, now I'm disheartened to switch.

I would like to try it, but losing like 20-30 fps is not good for me. Should I wait till Nvidia up their drivers for linux ? Will there be any improvements from Nvidia ?

Monster Hunter Wilds - Extreme Stuttering

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 18:14

Is anyone else experiencing this during this beta?

The game runs fine but every couple seconds the game freezes and the GPU usage drops to 0

Temperatures are fine, 65 C on the GPU and 75 C on the CPU

Arch, 7800x3d, 7900 XTX Saphire Nitro, 32 GB ram, SSD

I've tried both proton experiemental and proton bleeding edge with gamemode turned on and off and the problem persists in all of them

After a few minutes I eventually get an error and the game permanently freezes

```
[drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout, but soft recovered
```

Monster Hunter wilds with FSR3 enabled

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 17:53

Has anyone succeeded in making it work? The game runs just fine without it but when I turn it on the screen turn black, with the exception of the menus. Just to be clear the game doesn't crash, it works perfectly with the audio running in the background and the frames are being generated because the fps counter still works l, but the actual game isn't displayed

Noob configuring wine

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 17:34

Firstly I want to say I don’t know what I’m doing, but am learning, and if it helps me it might help you. At your own risk. I always thought regedit was more complicated than that… would that I knew this 40 years ago.

1)while installing games it helps to put them into /home/username/.wine/drive_c/users/username/Desktop before running the exe

2) open terminal in the directory and run wine programfile.exe

3)install q4wine and open it Goto default>system>regedit Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER>software>wine Right click wine folder and >new>key Name it Direct3D Right click it New>string value
Use this to make a useGLSL and VideoMemorySize strings.

How and where do I put my launch commands in Steamtinkerlaunch?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 17:08

I want to input three launch commands for my custom command, but they do not seem to work in steamtinkerlaunch. I want to put SteamDeck=0, -FSRFG and -DLSSFG as launch commands. If I put them into the launch options of steam, it works perfect. If I put them into the custom command arguments part of the game menu in steam in steamtinkerlaunch, it doesnt launch with those arguments. Any help on this would be amazing

Anybody have any luck getting Monster Hunter Wilds beta running well on Nvidia?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 16:56

Relavent info:
Bluefin Stable, fully up to date
RTX 3080, 5700x3D, 32Gbs Ram
Everything running from flatpak (Steam, Proton-GE, Gamescope)
World/Rise run just fine, no issues running other games
Using Proton Experimental on Bleeding Edge beta, gives an error without beta, will not start with GE, will not start with gamescope

Game "runs" just fine but textures are disappearing or artifacting. I've tried DLSS, FSR, nothing. Turned Vsync off and on. High and Low presets (picture is low). Textures high and low. I've seen linux gameplay working just fine but I believe they've all been AMD. Anybody have suggestions on what else I can tinker with?

Games with Nvidia driver (version) checks (current example: Dragon Age: The Veilguard)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 16:20

tl;dr: Some games use rather simplistic checks to allow or prevent a game start. This currently affects Dragon Age: The Veilguard for example. A launch option can overcome those. See the details below. This does NOT mean that it will be stable but it will most likely start, which is nice.

_________________________

For Nvidia users, one doesn't have to run beta drivers but can simply use the launch option DXVK_NVAPI_DRIVER_VERSION=56070 %command% to spoof the game into thinking that the requirements are met. It only seems to check for the version string after all. "560.70" is what it's looking for.

For Lutris users, that line (without the %command% element) goes into the game config > System Option > Command prefix field.

NOTE: The more out of date your current drivers are, the more you run the risk of crashing the game later on, but you can at least get it started and not fail at the initial driver check. The game references Windows driver versions, the Linux ones don't directly correlate but might work regardless, or don't.

Well, with that launch option, you can check how it does without compromising your other games or apps by installing beta drivers. So far, the latest "new feature" release 560.35.03 seems to work. Nvidia Driver Overview (note: DO NOT install drivers manually unless you know what you are doing!).

Current drivers via ppa: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa This one allows to make use of the "auto" install in Ubuntu and it's flavours while it populates the list of available driver versions with more recent releases than the default repos would provide. Simply install it and see what ubuntu-drivers devices has to offer before and after.

Steam processing shaders often

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 16:19

Is it normal for steam to need to process shaders for a game every day sometimes more than once a day? I play Overwatch 2 and I feel like every other time I launch the game I need to wait 15 minute for it to reprocess the shaders. Just wondering if that's normal or not.

Nvidia for new backpack Linux build= great idea?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. November 2024 - 16:10

I switched to Bazzite on my Legion GO about a year ago, and I love it! Now, I’m looking to build a portable “backpack” PC and am searching for the best gaming distro for a desktop setup using my Dan A4-SFX case, which has a capacity of 7.25L.

The challenge I’m facing is that this case only accommodates a 2-slot GPU, and I can’t seem to find any compatible 7900 cards, which leads me to consider an Nvidia GPU instead.

Will this configuration work smoothly, or should I rethink my choice of case?

Here are my specs:

  • Case: Dan A4-SFX v4.1 (7.25L)
  • CPU: 7800X3D or 9800X3D
  • MB: ASUS B650E-I
  • GPU: Inno3R 4070 Ti Super Twin X2
  • RAM: G.Skill Z5 Neo 6000/30 32gb
  • SSD: SK Hynix Platinum P41 M.2 2TB
  • PSU: Corsair SF850 Platinum
