I need a distro for both gaming and development
Okay, so I need a distro that can run programs like IntelliJ, PyCharm, and Syncthing as well as it can run Steam and Proton (I intend to play Windows games too).
Someone recommended Arch to me, but it kinda scares me.
Any recommendations?

The power of hyprland !
It's been a while since my last 1v1 ranked game, and I wanted to tell my opponent that I'm using Hyprland, He got scared and left the match, it didn't even last 30 seconds

Can you have a Steam Library on a storage drive that Linux and Windows can play from?
Can you dual boot Windows and Linux and have Steam detect and play games on both operating systems from one drive?
Example: Windows installed on SSD1, Linux installed on SSD2, Steam Library on SSD3. Both Win and Linux play the games installed on SSD3 from the same files.

Lutris (flatpak) symlinking home folders even with 'Integrate system files in prefix' off?
I'm using the latest version of the Lutris flatpak and for some reason every new game instance I create automatically has many of it's folders (such as Documents, Downloads, Desktop, etc.) symlinked to my equivalent directories in my real home folder. I don't recall this happening before, and it's happening even though the 'Integrate system files in the prefix' option is off. Strangely there does not appear to be an equivalent setting in the default settings for the Wine runner (as in I can't change what the default setting for that toggle is) but it seems to be off by default so I don't think that's part of the issue here.
Not only do I not want this, it's actively breaking compatibility because I have my lutris flatpak specifically blocked from using any files outside of my games directory(s), so when a game tries to write a save to ~/Documents/Saved Games or something it just fails. And extra-annoyingly, it often fails silently meaning over the past week I've already lost several hours of gameplay from playing various different games I've installed via lutris only to come back and realize none of them actually saved any of my progress because of this 'feature' lutris decided to spring on me.
Am I misunderstanding something or should it not be symlinking like it is?

Surprised by actual counts of GPU usage in latest Steam survey
I read in the Phoronix summary of the June 2025 Steam survey results
"AMD GPU use also continues to dominate among Linux gamers."
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Steam-June-2025
Michael posted a screencap of some of the Linux GPU table, but did not do any math.
I decided to do the math.
I looked at
https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/?platform=linux
and expanded the Video Card Description (Linux) field. I made a screen capture of the whole table, had an AI extract the text and make a spreadsheet (because there was no way to copy the columns and paste them into Sheets) I produced this summary table myself. (Not adding up to 100% is probably due to rounding individual entries.)
Steam June 2025 Hardware Survey for Linux GPUs
AMD without the Steam Deck leads, at about 2x Nvidia. But given the amount of Nvidia recommendations in this sub, I was surprised to see Nvidia at 22%.
Even Intel makes a decent showing at 10%.
It would be interesting to know what "other" means.
I think when Michael uses words like "dominate" it's an exaggeration, which makes sense given he runs a Linux site.
I did the same for Windows using
https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/?platform=windows
Steam June 2025 Hardware Survey for Windows GPUs
I think the Windows results are interesting, if we want to convert Windows gamers to Linux.

Isn't there a native mod loader for Skyrim?
Hello everyone. My holy grail of Linux Gaming is to be able to play modded Skyrim flawlessly on Windows, which is doable but there's always some issue somewhere preventing my mods from running perfectly like they do on Windows, especially since modding on Windows is already a headache in it of itself. However, I remember a while ago someone posted that they made a Linux native mod loader that fixes a lot of issues like fixing file name capitalization, and it looked way more promising than running something like Mod Organizer 2 over Wine (of which I heard the RockerBacon script for was discontinued on GitHub???), but I can't remember what it was called? It was like Lime or Lemon?
Does anyone know what I'm talking about???

FOSS VR surprisingly is really good now!
The last time I tried FOSS VR on linux, I couldn't even get it working, and the official SteamVR has unacceptably bad performance on linux. Nowadays WiVrn and Envision are so good, I was able to get it working on my steam deck in 10 minutes! Beat saber runs really well on steam deck and VRChat runs at like 10 fps in my home world. To be fair VRChat runs at only 50 fps on my desktop pc anyways in my home world on linux.
Steam VR doesn't even support desktop mirror on linux, and yet wlx-overlay-s can do it on both wayland and x11.
I even got mixed tracking working, with Quest 3 and tundra trackers. Its already scuffed doing it on windows, its almost a better experience with motoc on linux.

Garuda Dr460nized on Surface Pro 5 - performance is really bad
I installed Garuda Dr460nized on a Surface Pro 5. WiFi drivers were missing, but manual install from USB helped.
However, performance is a nightmare. Sound stutters, even Steam itself doesn't run well.
Any ideas? I know people run games like Left 4 Dead on Windows on these systems.
I'm absolutely new to Arch, and haven't touched Linux in years. However, I was able to confirm the iGPU is detected and a driver is installed.

3D Mark Steel Nomad
So there was this announcement two years ago: New 3DMark benchmark Steel Nomad coming to Linux : r/linux_gaming
What happened with it? There is still only Solar Bay for Linux (for enterprise) available.

minecraft clients alternative
I saw a lot of people saying that they use forge instead of clients (like badlion and lunar) and I was curious about what mods or launchers do people normally use on linux

I left Apex Legends and Delta Force for Linux
Switching to Fedora wasn’t just a tech move. It meant saying goodbye to two of my favorite games: Apex Legends and Delta Force. Both were a big part of how I played. Fast, tactical, intense shooters that defined my gaming time.
But in return, I got a system that’s fast, private, customisable, and honestly great for gaming. So the big question was, what could take their place?
Bloodstrike
This one really surprised me. It’s a fast, aggressive Apex-style shooter with quick movement, unique operators, and tight gunplay. Sure, it’s a mobile game ported to PC and not as polished, but it runs flawlessly with Proton. It’s super easy to jump into and nails that quick, competitive fix.
The Finals
Total chaos in the best way. Destructible environments, high mobility, unpredictable teamfights. It feels like an experimental cousin of Apex (though it’s not a battle royale). It plays well on Linux and keeps me on my toes every time I log in.
Escape from Tarkov (Offline PvE)
Delta Force's Operations mode had me hooked. Tactical PvPvE with objectives and real tension. Sadly, anti-cheat makes it unplayable on Linux. So I turned to Tarkov, offline PvE only, and it still captures that same intensity. Careful looting, tense firefights, and a constant feeling of risk and reward. No human players, but the vibe is absolutely there.
The Division
This one hit different. Coming back to The Division after years away felt like coming home. I’ve got over 3,000 hours in it, and it still holds up. The Dark Zone mode has that extraction shooter energy way before the genre exploded. High tension, unpredictable moments, and now it runs great on Linux via Lutris and the Ubisoft launcher. It’s helped me move on from Delta Force in a big way.
Sulfur
One of the strangest and most refreshing (extraction) shooters I’ve played recently. It’s dark, creative, and breaks all the usual shooter rules. It doesn’t try to follow trends and that’s exactly what makes it so fun. If you want something different, check it out.
Yes, I can still play Apex on Xbox when I really need that fix. Delta Force is coming to console in August too. But I don’t miss them enough to go back to Windows.
Fedora gives me control. No forced updates, no telemetry, no ads, no bloat. Thanks to Proton, Lutris, and the amazing Linux gaming community right here, I haven’t just adapted, I’ve levelled up.
(imo) Linux gaming isn’t about cloning what you had on Windows. It’s about finding new ways to enjoy what you love.
If you’re thinking about switching and worried about what you’ll lose, drop your favourite games in the below. We'll help you find something new to try.
For those that prefer it, and for footage from the games mentioned above, here is the vid

Compositor X11 or Wayland
Please help. I'm new to linux and I tried several os. I got better fps in CachyOS. I like gnome and I tried other DE as well like XFCE and KDE. I don't understand what is compositor. I read about it for gaming and everyone was saying using X11 and disable compositor to enhance fps in gaming. Can I disable my compositor in Gnome when I have WM: Mutter (X11)? Also I tried gaming in Mutter (Wayland), I had higher fps compared to Mutter (X11). Thanks

Hang/kernel panic only while gaming.
Hello. As stated in the title my laptop hangs or gets a kernel panic only when gaming. Went trough all the possibilities and now im just lost. This error is happening on windows the same as on manjaro. Tested and stressed every component i have for hours at a time. Ran memtest for the ram for 12 passes with 0 errors. SSDs are 96% and 91% healthy. Stress tested the GPU and the CPU with FurMark and mPrime separately and at the same time for hours each, resulting 0 errors (not counting 2 or 3 segfaults of mprime). Highest temperature recorded was 96 degrees C on the CPU. Tested even the network card, no errors. But, after 2-3 minutes of DarkSouls for example, either the system hangs or the kernel panics. Please ask for any logs and ill happily provide them.
PC Specs:
-CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS
-GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050M
-RAM: 24GB
-Storage: 2x M2 500GB SSD (Intel and Samsung)
EDIT: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/hang-kernel-panic-only-when-gaming/179484
i posted this on the manjaro forum, check the tread for a more detailed explanation of what i already did.
