Winboat is an amazing tool to upgrade firmware of USB peripherals

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 12:15

Winboat https://www.winboat.app/ is such an amazing tool. The USB pass-through feature is almost perfect to upgrade firmware for controllers and other USB peripherals which only have Windows apps. I was able to get Gamesir Connect installed, straight from Microsoft Store in a few clicks, and update my controller's firmware.

Almost perfect because USB pass-through is vendorId/productId based, and most controllers/dongles change their IDs while upgrading firmware. I suppose the devs can fix this with an option to configure passing-through based on the physical USB port instead of vendor/productID. But in the meantime, manually setting up all IDs works great. For gamesir, pass-through them all one by one:

  1. Just USB dongle connected (controller turned off)
  2. USB dongle and controller connected.
  3. The controller connected directly with a USB cable
  4. Unplug dongle, press & hold button on dongle and then plug in (this is special bootloader mode)

After this, the Windows app just works and you can update firmware (separately for dongle & controller). And even all the configuration operations, like controller lights, calibration work great.

Black bars with old games on Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 12:08

On Steam, with some older games (like KOTOR or The Temple of Elemental Evil), two black bars appear on the sides of the screen. Is there a way to make the image fill the entire screen?

Thanks

Trying to swich to Linux but finding gaming is terrible. Any help appreciated.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 11:31

I am trying to switch from Windows to Linux but, so far, it is gaming that is really holding me back. I am just not seeing the gaming experience that so many say is so good on Linux......yet (hopefully).

I want to avoid the "gaming distros" and from what I have read they don't offer much advantage other than saving you a bit of time installing a bunch of apps you will most likely need. So I went with Fedora 43 Workstation.

I'm finding so few games "just work". Two main examples are:

First, Guild Wars 2 (on Steam). I have a 4K monitor and the UI is tiny. I mean really tiny to the point you can't make out the buttons and text and it is unusable. This just doesn't happen in Windows. The UI scales properly and is perfectly readable. Changing the scaling in display settings makes no difference.

Secondly, Cyberpunk 2077 (on Gog via Lutris although also tried the Steam version). All the graphics on screen as soon as you start the game (so intro, menus, everything) just continuously flashes all the time. It is unusable.

My setup is AMD 7800X3D, 9070 XT and 32Gb memory. Any help appreciated as at the moment I have no choice but to resign myself to Windows 11 junk. I don't want to dual boot and especially just for gaming so want just one OS on my PC. I would prefer that not to be Windows 11.

I would also be very interested in opinions on whether I should switch to KDE. I have read that KDE has better VRR support (which might help with the flickering issue?) and scaling support (which might help the Guild Wars 2 issue?)

Recently (since roughly 1 week) started having very frequent crash issues in all games using proton (err:service:device_notify_proc failed to get event, error 1726)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 10:51

hey so since roughly 1 week ago I get very frequent crashes across all games where i use proton (havent tried linux native games recently, sorry).

I'm not experienced at trying to provide troubleshoot information, but I'll give you as much info as I can think of right now.

  • Up until 1 week ago all games were completely stable. Basically never crashed and if they did I always figured out it was a game issue.
  • System specs: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RX 7900 xtx, 2x16 gigs of ddr5
  • crashes are across ALL games. Most frequently happen soon after the game launch, esp. if i alt+tab, click out of the window or quickly navigate menus in game. Some games also have specific "crash points" now, like clair obscure crashing when i go from the levelup screen back to the rest screen (doesnt happen if i lock game to 30 fps, can unlock for normal gameplay). I tested games from ~2001 to very recent games released just this year. All of them crash now at usually one of these points. Seems to me like
  • I tested all the default proton versions from 8 to the latest, including custom versions like EM, GE and cachyOS custom proton, all behave the same in terms of the crashing.
  • Originally I was on Nobara 41, upgraded to 42 then to 43 and I think about the time of the upgrade to Nobara 43 the issues started. BUT I have the same issues on cachyOS so its not Distro related! Could ofc still be related to an update of a shared package (like drivers maybe?)
  • Proton Logs of the games look normal until the last error, which is always the same for all games crashing:
    • err:service:device_notify_proc failed to get event, error 1726
    • ^ this is always the last error in the logs. I also filtered to all errors I could find for each log and most of them are present in all logs, posting them for more info (maybe they help):
    • err:ntoskrnl:ZwLoadDriver failed to create driver L"\\Registry\\Machine\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\winebth": c0000142
    • err:kerberos:kerberos_LsaApInitializePackage no Kerberos support, expect problems
    • err:ntlm:ntlm_LsaApInitializePackage no NTLM support, expect problems
    • then, at the end before the crash dump: err:service:device_notify_proc failed to get event, error 1726
  • Nothing else crashes, just the games. All other software works fine.
  • aside from the crashes, the games work just fine and perform as expected. Some also mostly work and just crash 1 hour into a session, some usually crash within 2-5 minutes.

Any ideas what I could try to maybe pinpoint the issue? I'm not familiar with linux troubleshooting at all yet, sorry. Everything has been working like a dream for like a year.

Can't run Zenless Zone Zero at all?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 10:46

I recently went to Linux Mint the newest on their website and up to date everything (have no idea how to share that lot of data people do in this posts) running a ryzen, nvidia combo.

Tried to install it on Linux so i don't have to boot in windows everyday but can't make it work.
Tried in Lutris, using different protons, tried in steam with forced compatibility.

people suggested direct launching from the game.exe did not work, tried from launcher did not work.

Only ended up with 4 outcome:

  • The game starts there is sound and if i click i hear the login but no screen
  • The game starts, there is a split second freeze it tries to get opened and immedieately droppes me out
  • The Lutris ZZZ loading starts and stops around 30% and drops me out
  • The Lutris ZZZ loading starts but now in the icon left top corner there is a red "!" and drops me out around 30%

Need help with running steam games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 10:22

Recently made the switch from Windows 11 to Linux Mint Cinnamon. The only slightly heavy game I play on Steam is Street Fighter 6. It ran just fine when I was on Windows, but now when I launch the game, I hear my desktop start running like crazy, which it never did on Windows, and when the game launches, I can hear the audio, but I just get a black window. So I tried another game (Celeste) and while it was able to run, I swear the frame rate is lower than it was when I was on Windows. I need some help to fix (and optimize) my games. Is there anything I might be missing?

Here are my specs by the way:

CPU: Intel Core i5-14600K

GPU: NVIDIA GA107 [GeForce RTX 3050 8GB]

Storage: NVMe with 1TB

Ram: 32 Gigs

Pragmata demo : no ray tracing on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 10:08

Capcom just released a demo for Pragmata on PC (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3357650/PRAGMATA/) and once again, they decided to arbitrarily block RT effects when you run the game on Linux through Proton, just like every RE Engine games.

Is there any way to circumvent that, like hide the fact that the game runs with Proton ?

What's the cost of Linux Anti Cheat like FaceIt

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 09:26

Hi,

Just wondering, I know there are not all games that runs on Linux because of Kernel Level Anti Cheat. How much time it can cause for a big company to develop one as they did for Windows, like they can force to install a special proton that doesn't allow side process to draw on screen/They can add a service that guarantee no cheats are running by monitoring screen drawing and game window permission. may be an ATI cheat dev can answer. As a developer my first solution (very simple and idiomatic) would be to install a custom proton/service that check image signature to be an official one (sry for arch users like me but I guess we need to sacrifice something) then when the game is launched it disable screen recording, windows overlap. I know it will not be perfect but for a regular user that launch the game and wants to play without a cheater it can be a good deal ? 🤔 Why companies are so afraid to make a good one anti cheat for Linux, how much it can cost in terms of development time ? They can force you to have some kernel Params/force to use a different tty session when playing without any other apps/....

Unable to add drives to Steam after editing fstab.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 08:46

Using CachyOS. First week so be gentle.

I was using Steam fine until I got tired of manually mounting my drives and added them into fstab. After doing so Steam will no longer even see them, just Root. After removing the entries from fstab everything goes back to working.

fstab was working in terms of automatically mounting the drives, btw, just broke Steam...

Any ideas? Thanks.

Why does everyone recommend the system package of Steam?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 08:42

I use linux mint and have the option of using the flatpak or system package of Steam. Everyone seems to recommend the system package of steam but I can't get past the main menu of a game without it crashing. However when I use the flatpak (which is still annoying and has plenty of problems) I am able to actually play the same games that wouldn't work on the system package. Am I missing something or is the flatpak actually better?

Best Distros For Gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 08:06

I have been using linux mint for a while now and have also used pop os. They work okay for gaming but there are hoops you have to jump through to get games to run properly and even then sometimes they will randomly stop working. Anyways I'm making this post to ask if I should switch to another distro that isn't based on ubuntu, maybe something based on arch or fedora. Do you think I will still have problems or will another distro based on something else will work better?
