Struggling to get BG3 Script Extender + mods working on Linux (Proton)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 17:09

Hi everyone.
I’m posting this as a last attempt to make this work on Linux before giving up and going back to Windows, at least for gaming.

I want to be very clear from the start:
I’m not a programmer or a Linux power user.
I’m just someone who loves PC gaming and modding, and I migrated to Linux with a lot of excitement… until I hit this wall.

My background (important context)
  • Distro: CachyOS (Arch-based)
  • GPU: modern NVIDIA (official drivers)
  • Steam installed natively
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 running via Proton Experimental
  • Game installed on a separate drive:/run/media/alonso/Disco de juegos/SteamLibrary/

I’m comfortable following guides and terminal commands, but I don’t write code or fully understand how DLL injection works internally.

What I’m trying to do

I want to play Baldur’s Gate 3 with mods, specifically:

  • Script Extender (Norbyte)
  • Mods that depend on it:
    • WASD movement
    • Native camera tweaks
    • Edit / Custom Companions

This setup is extremely common on Windows and works there without issues.

What works so far
  • BG3 launches and runs perfectly in Proton
  • Performance is great
  • Simple .pak mods that do not require Script Extender load correctly
  • BG3 Mod Manager runs using protontricks
  • BG3MM detects the game and mods correctly
  • BG3MM downloads Script Extender without errors (progress bar, permissions prompt, etc.)

At this point, everything looks correct.

The problem

None of the mods that depend on Script Extender actually work:

  • WASD movement → no effect
  • Native camera → no effect
  • Edit / Custom Companions → no effect

They all fail at the same time.

I don’t mind learning and tweaking things, but this has become very discouraging because:

  • On Windows, this setup works almost instantly
  • On Linux, there are many layers involved (Steam, Proton, Wine, loaders, prefixes)
  • When something breaks, there is no feedback telling you where the failure is
  • As a non-developer, it’s hard to know what to try next

I’m close to reinstalling Windows just to play this game with mods, which honestly makes me sad after migrating to Linux with so much excitement.

Thanks a lot for reading and for any help you can offer. -I used ChatGPT to help me structure my ideas so this post actually makes sense.

Elden Ring compatibility?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 16:48

I have been playing Elden Ring on my newly built PC, and have noticed some weird graphical issues. My specs are:

Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X

GPU: Intel Arc B580

SSD: Samsung EVO 990 Pro 2tb

RAM: A-Tech 2x8gb 4800MHz

I am running Linux Mint 22.2

I am unsure if this is a linux issue or a compatibility issue with my Arc B580. The most prominent issue was trying to do ray tracing in Elden Ring, which as far as I know should work perfectly fine, but produced the results in the image.

Attempting to turn ray tracing on.

Sometimes the lighting will just go super dark at certain camera angles. When it rains in game, I get very weird and odd graphical effects with the skybox and other elements in general. Some parts of the UI are messed up, like Boss names only displaying the top half of the text.

Weird graphical issue in the UI.

Other than these weird issues, I have had literally no problems actually running the game on my 1440p monitor on High settings. Framerates are fine, but these issues really bother me and make it difficult to want to play the game.

RuneScape 3 FPS Issues [AMD & Fedora]

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 16:48

Hello everyone, i started playing RS3 again, managed to install it through steam no issues.
But only problem is I am getting 35-45 FPS in ANY graphics settings(low or ultra).

At first i thought i am running on CPU(R5 7600) and that was the case. So i enabled Proton in Steam and I see my GPU (RX 7800XT) spiking up. But it goes up to 40%.

AMD drivers are built into the kernel if I understand correctly, so there should be no driver tinkering for me to do, but if that's the case, why my GPU not hitting 100%?

If you need any logs, let me know.

How risky is running cracked games on Linux via Wine, and can sandboxing really help?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 16:19
I’m relatively new to Linux and I often hear that running cracked games on Windows is risky because of malware, system-wide access, registry changes, etc. My question is: is using cracked games on Linux via Wine just as risky, or is it inherently safer?

From what I understand, Wine doesn’t run things natively and doesn’t integrate with the OS the same way Windows does — but I’m not sure how much real protection that actually gives. Can malware inside a cracked game still escape Wine and affect the host system?

Also, since Wine-based setups usually have three separate access areas

-> the actual game folder,

-> the Wine prefix

-> the app/runner folder (where DLLs, Proton/Wine binaries, and temp files live, like in Heroic or Lutris) — can this be further restricted using sandboxing? For example, using tools like Flatpak,, Bottles or Heroic’s sandboxed environments. Via flatseal app and proper permissions?

If so, how do people usually lock this down in practice to minimize risk while keeping games functional?

Any best practices or real-world experiences would be appreciated

Switch to Linux, good infographic for distros?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 16:00

I have a laptop and handheld PC using Bazzite. Laptop will change cause their dev mode sucks, waiting on LinuxMint, hated cachyOS didn't behave smoothly. Laptop hardware is newer.

Anyways not discussing that I'm here for help with my gaming desktop. My goal for the month of January is to switch to Linux.

AMD 5800X, 3070.

I pretty much just game, watch content, and play with excel on the desktop. I don't want to tinker with my OS it needs to be stable for gaming, I'll keep a Windows drive as insurance (hope to never use it again) pretty much all the games/apps I use work on Linux or I can find new ones. Is there a nice up to date info graphic that shows the pros/cons of the popular distros for gaming?

I was thinking of Bazzite since I know it, however with that 3070 I'm just not sure what the best choice would be. Will probably be the first and last time I buy nvidia.

Lag issues on steam games after playing for a couple minutes (it varies from game to game however)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 15:57

Hello, I am currently on Linux Mint 22.2 after switching from plain ol' Debian. My CPU is a 13th Gen Intel i7-13700K, and my GPU is an RX 6600 XT, and as the title says, I am having issues where Steam games encounter diabolical frame drops, most notably in the 2 games I play, which are Team Fortress 2 (running with native steam runtime) and Cyberpunk 2077 (proton experimental).

To be specific, in Cyberpunk 2077, the lag spikes occur after an hour of playtime, and in TF2, the lag spikes occur once there are too many things on screen (eg, players on fire or just plain ragdolls ragdolling and whatnot). Considering my specs, I don't think this is normal, and I have tried the traditional fixes of setting gamemoderun or LD_PRELOAD launch options to no avail (specifically in TF2 since it doesn't require me to sit for hours for the lag spikes to kick in).

I have been using different Linux distros for 11 years and have never seen this before, so any help is appreciated :D

Download speed through Steam on Linux about half what it is under Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Januar 2026 - 15:41

I ran a speedtest on Linux, I get around 2Gbps. But when I download through Steam, it always hovers around 100MB/s, even if I change to next nearest server. Sometimes it'll go even lower. I thought it was holiday throttling by Steam, but when I went into Windows to test, Steam is downloading around 200MB/s there.

Any ideas? I've tried some Google "fixes" (found some Steam console commands) but they didn't improve anything.
