In the past month I started having lag issues, that are apparently GPU-related, despite everything running normally on windows 10.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 19:24

cpu amd ryzen 7 2700x

memory 16gb

gpu nvidia geforce gtx 980

for the past 3 years I've used this same hardware and ran: POP!_OS 22.04 with cinnamon version 5.2.7. I would always run well games that are not so light, including even Helldivers 2, probably the heaviest.

However, in the past month, while developing a fairly simple game on unity, I started to experience increasingly frequent lag spikes when using that program as well as with 3d games.

Those episodes include mouse pointer being laggy, sometimes the screen going black for 2-3 seconds, the audio (whether from the program or from a youtube video in the background) going mute also for 2-3 seconds and then coming back.

On Unity, I took some people's suggestion and tried running a profiler, which would always show the problem was of the "others" category, which doesn't really help. the standalone version of the game was also a bit laggy on linux

from time to time I would reboot on windows 10 and test things, and everything would always run fairly smoothly, including the standalone windows version of the game.

Then someone suggested me installing Mint, which I did, reinstalled the drivers and all and while the performance seem to be better, the problem still persists.

Just by browsing on steam I experience some lag on the mouse pointer. Same with Unity.

Before moving to mint, htop would show huge spikes on the CPU cores, some of them reaching 100%. I haven't tested it again since.

I tried changing the nvidia drivers. Tried 550, 535, 470, but the problem doesn't go away.

I tried updating Unity.

any insights?

Driveloop: Survivors is another attempt to blend the survivor-like bullet heaven whatchamacallit genre made popular by Vampire Survivors with vehicles. It's out now in Early Access so I took it for a spin.

Dualsense Controller Input Latency Over Bluetooth

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 18:22

OS: Fedora 41

DE: KDE
Kernel Version: 6.13.9
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600

Motherboard: Asus TUF X570-Plus Wifi

GPU: Nvidia 3060 Ti (Driver Ver. - 570.133)

I did not have this issue before but probably about 2-3 months ago I began to think my Dualsense controller had stick drift again. Only to realize one day when I used it wired that everything was fine.

Over bluetooth it's almost like inputs get stacked sometimes so 3 small shifts to the left turns into a big swooping turn that I can't pull out of. Hence it made me think it was stick drift.

Other times there is just a huge delay between when I press a button and it registers. Recently using a Windows system I update the controllers firmware with Sony's program. However, that did not solve the issue. Currently I just use the controller wired, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this may be happening.

Install Linux on new PC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 17:31

I just bought a new PC for gaming and I would like to replace Windows with a Linux distribution.

I already installed Kubuntu on old PC I wouldn't mind losing, not this time.

I've read a bit and so far all I have to do for the PC to work at full potential is :

  1. Install my OS
  2. Install GPU drivers

Do I get things right or I missed a lot of major steps ? It seems too simple to me.

I thought about Ubuntu or Pop!_OS.

Here are the technical details in case you're curious :

  • Reference : MSI Pulse 16 AI C1VGKG-010FR
  • CPU : Intel 7 155H
  • RAM : 16G DDR5
  • Storage : 512G SSD
  • GPU : RTX 4070

Current best distro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 17:29

Hey all,

I am not stranger to Linux, but recently I've had issues trying to setup Linux on my desktop. I was set on Ubuntu but then the on mobo Bluetooth not working inside of Ubuntu was a huge turnoff for me.

Specs: Radeon RX 7800XT Gigabyte AORUS Eagle X870 Elite WiFi 7 Ryzen 7 9700X 32GB DDR5

I have tried to install Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and now Im trying to decide between endeavourOS, Garuda or Bazzite.

My machine is used for a lot of gaming but its also a workhorse, but I don't want a strictly gaming Linux distro where everything else is unoptimized or something because I do more than just gaming.

What's your recommendations?

CoreCtrl and the 9070XT is a really funny combination.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 16:11

Just got my XFX Radeon RX 9070 XT Mercury Gaming Edition today. Just yesterday Computerbase did some tests on the 9070XT in combination of UV and reduced power limit. Exactly for this reason I got my new GPU, I wanted to reduce power consumption in gaming. Just FYI I'm using Tumbleweed.

So the first thing I did take a look at after installing the GPU was CoreCtrl. Doing that came with quite a big surprise: The Power limit can be reduced not only by just 30%, negative off-sets are completely unlocked (you could set the GPU to 1W^^), while - and this is good to see - increasing the power limit still is restricted to +10%.

Did some tests with the power limit while running Space Marine 2: Even at 120W and -75mV the game was still running fluidly.

This was an extreme test - you can get to comparable results by limiting FPS or reducing the resolution, etc. Just did it to test what could be possible.

Dota 2 on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 15:22

Not sure if this is the correct sub, but:

I dual boot. Tried this on two different computers.

Dota 2 looks less sharp/crisp on Linux.

Slightly dimmer. Slightly oversaturated.

It's not game breaking, but noticeable.

Is Linux just supposed to be a massive headache or am i stupid?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 15:19

Thought i wanted to move away from Windows, but Linux has been giving problems after problems, often introducing new problems before i've managed to fix the previous one.

I'm using Linux Mint, Kde Plasma, gtx 1060 3gb.

My issues began with x11 not supporting mixed refresh monitors. My main monitor would run at 165hz, but moving windows would stutter at 60hz. When i try to play games, i seem to get some sort of sync issues where i get occasional stutters. Opening games also sometimes makes the screen go black and i can't do anything. Even alt+tab etc. are not responsive. I tried forcing full graphics pipeline in x nvidia settings but that didn't help.

I tried switching to a Wayland plasma session. I am greeted by a black screen and nothing working. Turns out that the Mint driver manager only goes up to version 550 of nvidia's proprietary driver. Fine, i manually install the newest 570 driver. Now the desktop works, and moving windows seems smooth. I have Discord installed and it justs randomly goes black until i hover my mouse over it. Fantastic.

Let's try to play some games. I have Ultrakill and Mordhau installed through steam and use Proton. Runelite installed natively. Runelite works smoothly and i have no issues. Ultrakill seems fine at first, but the frame rate seems to drop and i get frequent hiccups as i play for a few minutes. I launch Mordhau and get a black screen again, but i can hear the audio. If i click outside the game window, the game start displaying. if i click on the game window again, the screen goes black again. Also while a game is running, dropdown menus in plasma start glitching out, like some menu entries not showing, or my mouse looks like it's erasing a part of the menu background.

Overall Linux just feels a lot clunkier and slower compared to Windows 10. I've also got a vr headset and a direct drive wheel for simracing, but i'm dreading the installation of Monado for VR and open source drivers for my Moza wheel. I'd like to sort all of these problems out but i'm not sure where to start. Install another distro? install an older nvidia driver?

I'm looking to upgrade to an amd gpu at some point when i find a summer job or something to get wayland working right.

endeavourOS for linux gaming has been wonderful so far!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 15:15

Hey all, I've been lurking here a bit and noticed no one suggests EOS for gaming or even just normal use. Is there a reason for that? Is it just not well known? Are there hidden drawbacks?

I ask because after distro hopping including garuda, bazzite, popos, manjaro, I settled on EOS for my nvidia based gaming desktop and it has been fantastic performance wise. I'm able to install just the tools I need easily with no extra bloat while still having a dedicated nvidia install process that made setup easy.

Looking to discuss and learn, let me know your thoughts on this!

Incorrect amount of RAM detected in Bazzite?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. April 2025 - 15:09

I installed Bazzite on a Beelink Ser9 mini PC with 32GB of LPDDR5. The Steam menu shows 26.99GB of RAM and 11.66GB of VRAM, which doesn't add up (BIOS correctly shows 32GB). Should I be concerned?
