Linux Mint 22.2 or Ubuntu 25.10 for gaming? Or in other words, how big of an issue could Wayland be?
Hello,
So, I'm giving Linux a try for the first time in over a decade as I am reluctant to switch to Windows 11. I have the extended security updates and I plan to try out Linux over the next 6-12 months to see if I'm able to switch to it permanently. I've so far done a dual-boot with my existing Windows 10 install and have spent most of my time on the Linux side of the system, so I'd say it's going well so far.
I'm probably a bit above average when it comes to dealing with tech, but I still prefer something that will work out of the box since I'd rather not spend too much time tinkering to get stuff to work if it can be avoided. So I'm looking for a distro that is general-purpose, user-friendly, has large and established community of users that are likely to have encountered the same problem I might be or able to offer a solution, as wide a selection of native software as possible with easy installation, and relatively frequent updates so I don't have to wait forever for some bug fixes or features. So overall I think Ubuntu and Mint are the ones that best fit my criteria. I've seen some buzz around Bazzite, but it's too gaming-focused, Debian has, as I understand it relatively slow update cycles and stuff like Arch are just not user-friendly.
I've also been catching up on what's changed on Linux since I went back to Windows in the early 2010s, and one thing I've seen that seems very relevant to a lot of stuff is the transition to Wayland. I've been trying to figure out how relevant it would be to gaming, but I can't quite find any clear answers. I'm interested in part because I have a dual-monitor setup with one 60 Hz monitor and one 165 Hz one that also has variable refresh rate. As I understand X11 doesn't really run this sort of setup well, while Wayland is better built for it. I can't even run my main monitor at more than 100 Hz or I get very bad artifacting in Wuthering Waves. I doesn't happen in Windows, and after activating the Wayland on Mint (which is still marked as experimental) I was able to run the game with the monitor at max refresh rate with no artifacts, so X11 is clearly the culprit. However since it's experimental on Mint there were issues, the worst being that Signal just crashed outright. I only spent about 20 min on Wayland as a result before going back to X11.
From what I've gathered there are no plans to switch Mint to Wayland until 2028, so if I want the improvements that Wayland brings in a non-experimental set-up my only current option seems to be Ubuntu 25.10. Ubuntu was the OS I used for a few years between 2010 and 2012 until I accidentally broke all sound in the OS trying to get it to work in a game in Wine, so I am a bit more familiar with it. However from what I've gathered Ubuntu has made some more questionable decisions in terms of package management and Gnome implementation, which is why I went instead with Mint this time. But now I'm once again considering Ubuntu.
Just how much can Wayland break things given that most things are made to work primarily or exclusively with X11 in mind? Does the Gnome implementation have fewer issues? Games and the apps that make them playable on Linux are certainly the main ones I'm interested in, but not exclusively. Since I'm looking to make Linux the daily driver set-up with a Windows dual-boot for those things that just don't work at all (I have one game right now that does not work due to anti-cheat) I want wide software availability. The Signal crash was one example of an issue that is just too big for me to ignore.
So, should I switch my trial-run over to Ubuntu 25.10 or should I stick with Mint for now given my criteria? Or should I wait for 26.04 which as I understand will be an LTS? Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the sorts of things that I'm interested in finding an answer to?
Edit: In case it's relevant, my system is an intel 11400 with 36 GB of DDR4 at 3200 Mhz and a RX 6700 XT GPU.

Any news on when tearing will be fixed on wayland+nvidia?
edit: title: fix being able to control if tearing is enabled or diaabled
Currently to play games on Linux I resort to the x11 plasma session as I can't seem to be able to enable tearing. This means that all games are locked to 75hz which is really bad for competitive games like the finals, also generally the latency is quite a lot worse on wayland. I'm using proton experimental btw.
I know that some (or all) of this was caused by a kernel regression in 6.15 so do I just have to resort to an lts kernel for now?

VM Gaming
Hallo! I am a recently new Linux user (bedrock (arch stratum) btw) and have enjoyed the experience so far. The programming is and v simple and clean and customizing my Linux machine has been a blast (after hrs of documentation reading XD). However, while most of my non competitive games run well on my laptop I do occasionally need to boot into windows for multiplayer games with kernel level anti cheat. Could I theoretically use a VM in Linux running windows and play from there or are there better alternatives? I haven’t looked much into it other than “maybe I’ll post a Reddit thread here”. Cheers

Current state of FSR4 on RDNA3?
What is the current state of FSR4 on RDNA3? As Fedora now comes with official MESA 25.2.5 I want to give it a go in Cyberpunk 2077. Is it still the way with chaning the .dll to the correspoding names in game folder? What commands to use with launcher? DXIL_SPIRV_CONFIG=wmma_rdna3_workaround and PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1?.
As I changed the dll's in Cyberpunk and chosed FSR3.0 the game crashed, so I guess I could've swapped wrong ones because the game files aren't named amd_fidelity... but ffx_fsr3_upscaler.
What is the best way to achieve FSR4 on older GPUs right now?

Arch Linux Steam slow and inconsistent download speeds PSA
T.L.D.R. if you're having issues with slow and and/or inconsistent download speeds for steam on linux populate your secondary dns.
Recently I fully switched over from windows to Linux with pretty minor experience, rather than being reasonable i decided the best course of action was to get an arch boot disk, follow an install guide and fully replace my windows os with arch linux without a windows backup. Overall this went pretty smoothly however I had continued issues getting my steam download speeds to be consistent and above few Kb.
I am currently using steam via steam-native-install on an arch linux distro ( archinstall with KDE plasma) however I had this issue following this install also.
I tried a number of solutions that had worked in the past to little or worse results. At one point I even loaded steam os onto my computer to validate faster download speed were possible but i didnt keep it because it was to restrictive. Finally on a whim I decided to update my secondary dns in my ipv4 settings (I have ipv6 disabled), stopped steam, rebooted my computer and was finally able to achieve the same speeds i had gotten on when I had a windows OS.
I wanted to post this somewhere including a bunch of the keywords I tried googling incase someone else has this issue there is this stumble upon post for them, if this was here i could have saved 4 days of troubleshooting. <3
Make sure you dns is properly configured and try adding secondary dns.
Good luck.

Keep getting disconnected from official cs2 servers (NOT Because of unstable internet)
I keep getting disconnected from every official cs server.
sometimes the my character can't interact anymore, sometimes everything just stops, sometimes my character just follows the last action i did, all this happens before i get disconnected from the server, i do not have the same problem with workshop maps, i have an arch linux, i installed steam properly and don't use the force compatibility option, i do have proton-ge installed but don't know how to use it with steam.
also sometimes am just glitched in one place while i can hear everything that happens around me.
also this isn't a problem from my internet since it works fine for every other thing.
I would really appreciate some help from the linux community.

Dual GPU, final check before purchasing, any suggestions?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3BvNrM
I will likely be trying to source some of these parts second-hand. Also, it seems like PSU prices have shot up from what I remember. I recall paying $100 for a 1000w PSU and thought that was steep a few years ago.
Purpose of the build: Primarily gaming at 1440p 144hz on Fedora using the 9070XT, using the 3060 passed through into a Windows VM for CAD work. Dual boot into Windows for any game (rare for what I play) that doesn't play nice in Linux.
Concerns: I've checked the motherboard specs and it seems like this X670E board is one of the only ones out there that has great dual GPU support. I dug through a ton of X870E board specs and couldn't find one (not that it's really worth the upgrade anyways).
Clearance for two GPUs in the case. It should fit.
The case has 8 removable expansion slots.
The motherboard's first PCIe x16 slot lines up with the third removal slot on the case. This means that the 2-slot 9070XT will consume panels 3-4 on the case.
I'm not certain where the next PCIe slot on the mobo will line up. It looks like it'd line up to be slot 7 on the case, so a 2-slot 3060 would fit but it'd be tight. Especially considering the intake fans at the bottom.
I also need to add a KVM into the mix for seamless switching between this machine and a laptop.

Lets discuss (kernel) anticheats on Linux
Ive seen so many comments in this community that bashes on kernel anticheats, but little to no actual suggestions how to replace those. Lets have a pragmatic discussion.
This is my view:
It is all about lowering the costs while maintaining a healthy and competetive environment with insignificant number of cheaters. Kernel level anticheats lowers the number of cheaters drastically because of the higher barrier to entry. Thus lowering cheater reports which would otherwise need to be processed, costing more money.
Allowing linuxes to bypass kernel level anticheats weakens this security for a game - making cheating on linux easier. I am afraid that with the rise in popularity of linux gaming, cheater vendors will have the incentive to make cheats for this platform, pushing the game company to disable the kernel anticheat bypass.
Unfortunately I cant think of a solution to make a linux anticheat that is reliable just as a kernel level anticheat on Windows is. Even if linux kernel itself implemented some kind of verification process of all modules, it could be bypassed by patching the kernel itself. I believe cheat vendors would quickly catch up and find a nice automated way for their non-technical clients to install and configure it. Windows kernel being closed-source is a good thing for anticheat systems, unfortunately.
What do you think?

8bitdo Controller keeps disconnecting on Linux when using the 2.4G dongle
My 8Bitdo Pro 3 and 8Bitdo Ultimate 2 (Bluetooth version) controllers keeps disconnecting after 5 seconds when I connect them using the 2.4GHz dongle on Linux. When I connect them using bluetooth they work normally. They also work normally with the 2.4GHz adapter on Windows.
I installed Nobara recently on an old SSD and curiously the controllers worked well with the 2.4G dongle and didn't keep disconnecting, but on Fedora (the distro I use) and Cachy OS (I also installed Cachy OS on the old SSD) they kept disconnecting, so maybe the problem is some configuration on the OS that needs to be changed?
I also have a Ultimate 2 wireless version and a M30 2.4G version, and both of them work well on Fedora.
All the controllers and the dongles are updated to the latest version.
Anyone else had this problem and knows how to solve it?
I also tried posting this on the 8Bitdo subreddit but the post wasn't approved for some reason.

(Bazzite) Trying to install Mod Organizer 2 for Linux and this error happens in my Konsole
I have all dependencies installed, including JQ, moved my Fallout New Vegas to my internal disk drive (where bazzite is installed to avoid NTFS issues) and I'm still having this error.
Any clues or tips of why this is happening and how I can get past this?
Thanks in advance!

Sonic x Shadow Generations won't open
Certain games like Team Fortress 2 and now Sonic x Shadow generations wont open, I've been using linux mint for only a couple months now but am honestly considering switching back to windows (yuck) because of the compatibility issues. anything would be appreciated, i dont want to have to dual boot!
in the case of team fortress 2, it opens and freezes before i get to the title screen, and for sonic x shadow gens the game won't launch at all
