is it even worth it to dual boot for windows games?
so I switched to Linux for like 4 years ago, and I'm happy now
but I had to dual boot windows 10 because of collage(mainly CST Studio design antenna)
but let's say that I don't need that anymore or at least for the next semester.
so now I have this disgusting dual boot windows, and I though why not use it for league of legends (I'm a new player btw, I can't even play ranked yet, lvl 8)
but that the only thing why I am even boot to windows.
but damn imagine you have to just reboot every time for this one game and then just reboot back to Linux
it very inconvenient
so is it even worth it? do we just have to except the fact that even though you can dual boot to play windows games, because it just annoying.
can you guys give me a better reason why should I just leave this game even though I do enjoy it, a better reason than just me being Lazy?
I mean think about it, we all have the option to dual boot, but would you dual boot for windows only games?

Alan Wake 2
Since there is no Proton DB entry for Alan Wake 2, since it has no Steam Release yet, I thought to make a post about how I managed to get it running, in case anyone is looking for it in the future.
So the answer was quite simple. Heroic Games Launcher. Running Proton Version 11.0-20260428 for CachyOS it simply worked. Performance is about 10% behind my last Windows Session of the game, but it has gone through some major updates since then, so it is not really comparable.
I have been testing it for about 4 hours at this point and have no Problems at all, except for having to bring a flashlight when I go to the toilet at night.

Discord even in "native" Wayland mode still requires Xwayland?
I was just fiddling with some weirdness with Steam and Xwayland on my Labwc desktop, and i noticed that if i kill Xwayland it causes the official Discord to crash despite using --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland flags.
After killing Xwayland and relaunching Discord I noticed it spawned a new Xwayland process. Out of curiosity i did sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/Xwayland to make it so that Xwayland can't launch and sure enough Discord will not launch:

Xwayland is still a requirement? Or is there another way to make it truly Wayland native without Xwayland? I know I can run 3rd party clients and I probably will but I am now curious.

A dumb question but how do I actually use protontricks?
I know people said protontricks is noob/foolproof but turns out it's not me-proof.
So I'm trying to play a non-steam game. I added the exe to steam and there's a popup saying I must install .NET Desktop Runtime. I clicked 'Yes' and it downloads the installer. When I open the installer I'm greeted with this protontricks window:
It only lists my steam game and not the non-steam game I added. By default it selected Arma as it's on top of the list so I clicked OK there, and I guess the .NET got installed into Arma? Because when I tried to open my non-steam game and I select Arma, the game launches and not if I select the the other games, but does this mean my Arma gets modified as it installed something there?
This also happens when I try to open other exe app, let's say nexus mod manager, protontricks asked me to select one of my steam games even if it doesn't have any correlation to it. I don't want to select whatever as it feels disorganized, so how do I exactly use this protontricks thing?

Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity Prologue Lags on my hardware, any ideas why?
Hi, I posted awhile ago, I was seeking help with this title, and its become a dead end, and while I like to get the game running full speed, thats not the main goal of this post.
This free game is the most notorious sucker I've never tried to get working, and thats because on other Nvidia / AMD machines it works fine most of the time, but at other times not so much. The game is an enigma and I like to hear your speculation.
Heres the original post with my specs

System Crashing When Playing Some Games Using Proton
I am having an issue when playing games that use Proton, it is crashing usually within a minute of booting up the game for most games. Usually, the game is stable while in the menu but once in the actual game is when it has issues. Sometimes this happens when changing graphical settings as well.
Setup
OS: Linux Mint 22.3
Kernal: 6.8.0-111-generic
CPU: Intel i7-8086k
GPU: Nvidia 3080 (driver version 580.142)
Crash Report: The package providing /home/shredberg/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton could not be found. If you want to generate a stack trace for this crash report, please reinstall it.
This does not happen to any games that are native linux games, this only happens with Proton. I have also stress tested the components using OCCT and have not found any issues, everything runs as normal at reasonable temps (Below 70C).
I have attempted to reinstall steam but that did not help. Any suggestions?

Issues with shutting down my pc.
I am currently running Bazzite OS on my m.2 SSD, set the bios to have it boot up into that instead of Windows 11 on my other m.2 ssd. Everything is fine and dandy until I decide to shut down the pc. Regardless if I use the regular shut down method via the gui or use a command line. I will get logged out, both monitors will stop receiving singles. However, the PC itself will stay on. (Fans will still spin, the lights are on, etc). I can manually shut it down via holding down the power button. I have tried different bashes in the terminal, in some cases it will shut down perfectly. I started it back up, play some games, go shit it down and it’s back to square one.
Note: I am running an Nvidia gpu and a AMD Ryzen cpu. I do have secure boot disabled when I was trying out dual booting.

Cause for this? Only happens on Linux
I encounter weird dips in Steam downloads which are only present on Linux. Download is 100% stable but sometimes it can drop sharply like this.
AI said it’s throttled because disk writing sped dropped. I’m wondering did disk and cpu cause this or it was just the internet stability that caused this drop in both writing graph and speed graph?

Guide to Discord on Nvidia/Wayland
Re: Is Discord just terrible on Linux?
After seeing some generally unhelpful replies in this thread, I've decided to make a post outlining how I've gotten discord screen sharing and video playback to work well on an Nvidia 3080ti. Like the OP, I was disappointed in both the official discord app and vesktop for screensharing, for different reasons.
I think it is beneficial for this to be a separate post so that it comes up in search results for others having the same issues with Nvidia GPUs and Wayland DEs specifically.
This will be written from the perspective of Arch/CachyOS/KDE, however, the same packages and arguments can be implemented on any distro (probably).
First, you need discord canary. The stable branch of discord does not support native wayland with Nvidia GPUs.
To get discord to launch as native wayland, you must add ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT=wayland to either your env or to the beginning of the command that launches discord. I personally just put it in /etc/environment.
Next you need the elFarto nvidia-vaapi-driver. This should be preinstalled as a part of the cachyOS gaming packages for nvidia, the package is called libva-nvidia-driver in the cachyos-extras-v3 repo, other distros might have it labelled differently.
To launch discord, I have a discord.desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications/ with the following body:
- In the same directory, I have a discord-canary.desktop file. The reason this is necessary is because the way discord sends push notifications, without this file, you will not have notification badges on the icon. It is just:
This fixes hardware acceleration, mp4 video playback, streaming with application audio, and badge notifications. Your streams will be encoded with the GPU so no more 100% CPU usage while streaming, and audio works as well.
The only problems with this setup exist with Discord on linux in general. No application-specific audio, and only can capture pulse audio (usually a non-issue. proton uses pulse audio, but Haruna media player, for example, you must change it to output through pulse).
For me, the tradeoff of having to share all audio is completely worth the substantial increase in stream quality over Vesktop and proper GPU hardware acceleration (which both fixes embedded video playback AND doesnt fuck up my CPUs whole day when I stream).

Thelio Mira as a Linux gaming box: Proton is boringly good now
Mass Effect 3 (Original) no longer using discrete Nvidia GPU after driver update
My GPU is a RTX 3070. I'm like halfway through the original PC version of Mass Effect 3 on Steam, it has ran perfectly until now.
The game has decided to just not use my GPU anymore. I can tell because the game runs terribly in general - it's only using the CPU. I think it might be using software rendering for whatever reason and I don't know how to stop it from doing so.
I had to originally install physx to get it working the first time before, now that does nothing even after a fresh install.
I did update to the 590 drivers the other day, but I tried rolling back to no avail.
It complains about the hardware not being supported and in the config tool, it shows it as having only 119mb of memory and its masked as an AMD 6700XT: image
This games uses Proton Experimental by default, other versions don't work because of the stupid EA App, which tried to ruin my playthrough before with the stupid license problem.
Trying to unmask the GPU with PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 prevents the game from working at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this?

In Linux mint steam big picture mode has really bad lag.
It's fixed when I enable hardware decelerated in web view, but steam usually wont open with that's enabled. My PC is all AMD.

DayZ launcher (Personal project)
I created this project because I was getting back into playing DayZ on Linux again and wanted a better launcher. Since I want learn a new language(Golang) I decided to build it using that. This is a personal project; for the most part, I used "vibe coding", I builded it just for the fun of it and to learn what I needed to, so I have no intention of continuing to maintain it, as it already does everything I want.
I am sharing this simply because it might be useful to someone else (or maybe not). I have only tested it on CachyOS (my current OS), but I did create other installation options (deb, rpm, zip, PKGBUILD) which I didn't tested.

Why disk space differentiate from app to app so much?
Greetings. Recently I've been moving my games to my linux partition more and more, and I've faced an issue I didnt expect to face. My free disk space differentiate too much from app im checking it in. My file system has 787 gigs of space initially. And disk utility says, that I have 343 gigs of free space.
I've wanted to install baldurs gate 3 and play it, and noticed, that steam reports my free space as 266 gigs.
Weird, I've googled and found out, that ext4 have some kind of reserved space for root, which is 5% by default, okay, 5% of 787 should equal to 40 gigs of memory reserved. Its quite large and I would want to reduce it, since, well, Im already ditching 16 gigs for swap partition. But even then - 40 + 16 = 56, and still - 343(reported amount of free space by "disks" app) - 56(swap + ext4) != 266, its equal to 287, roughly 20 gigs less. After some more reading - I decided to run df -h, here is results
It it reports correct 284 gigs of free space - difference of 3 gigs for those 2 tmpfs files.
So, question still stands - where have I lost 20 gigs? And also - what is a safe value for ext4 reserve? Because I would like some of those 40 gigs for myself, since swap is not loaded most of the time.
I also ran qdirstat program, for measure, and it reports correct 400 of taken space.
So 4 different programs give me 3 different numbers for my memory. Please tell me if Im correct in my assumptions about ext4 and swap, and where have I miscalculated 20 gigs.
