System clock polling in Wine/Proton

1 May 2024 - 2:47pm

Hi, I have a very weird, specific question because I'm finally trying to get "Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm" running on Linux via Steam (GE-Proton 9.2). This is a wargame from a few years ago that doesn't put a lot of strain on the system but seems to use some very specific libraries (as does the sequel which doesn't work at all), but I haven't given up hope yet. I guess what's nagging me so much is the fact that those two games are the only ones out of maybe 250 I've tried that I can't get running.

So, Red Storm starts, menus appear and everything seems to run quite well when you start a scenario. As soon as the turn resolution starts the scenario doesn't really progress as it should. This game runs more or less in real time phases but after the initial few seconds, the game clock is not properly advancing. Nonetheless, some units which are supposed to join the battlefield several in-game minutes or hours later get added only after a few seconds. So things ARE happening in the background but it seems that the game somehow can't keep track of time properly.

It looks to me as if the system time polling is either not working or misinterpreted. Perhaps the game thinks that minutes or hours have passed because it reads seconds as minutes. That would explain why it doesn't update the seconds (which are needed to advance the in-game clock) but sends units onto the battlefield much earlier than they are supposed to.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever encountered something similar in another game and if there are any things you can think of that I might try to fix this issue. For what it's worth, I don't think this has anything to do with CPU speed or Vsync or refresh rate, because the game runs well on Windows with the same hardware and screen settings.

Thank you!

We would love some help with testing our game!

1 May 2024 - 2:01pm

Hi there good people! We are in the final phases of releasing our latest game The Fate of Baldr. We already know that the game works pretty well on Windows, MacOS and the Steam Deck. However we would love to get a few testers to test our Linux version as well.

Send me a PM or go to our Discord server and message me there for a Playtest key on Steam and some further instructions.

Thanks in advance and have a great day! :)

Changing Proton versions loses save data - Steam tModLoader Terraria

1 May 2024 - 1:52pm

I updated tModLoader for Terraria recently, and with the new update, I had to start using Proton Experimental on Steam (instead of using no forced compatibility tool). The problem that came with this is that tModLoader now doesn't recognize any of my previous save data.

I can still find the save data of my Players and Worlds in ~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader

I guess I'm looking for where Steam games store their data when using Proton; because I think I can put my save data there and it'll work.

Debating switching to Linux, but concerned about gaming

1 May 2024 - 1:44pm

Switching to Linux is something I've been debating doing for YEARS at this point. Every time I do research about it, it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth, but now I think it might be good enough for what I do. Years ago, I realized that Linux is easy enough to work with due to things like Pop!_OS that seemingly makes things more intuitive, but when it comes to gaming, I see mixed responses.

Can I game with Linux? And if so, what distro is recommended? Or is something else a factor when it comes to gaming performance? And when I ask these questions, yes, I know games CAN be played on Linux, but I'm wondering just how convenient it is. I know usually games won't work properly on release, which is fine with me. Will pretty much all Steam games work and what about Xbox Game Pass for Windows (I know that Windows is another OS, but will the app still work?)? Will Riot, EA, Epic Games, GOG, Blizzard, and Ubisoft apps work?

Also will Linux be fine for the things I do daily? I usually use Brave Browser and just use Twitch, Youtube, Twitter, Discord, browse Google for various info/forums, and check my e-mails. I also game plenty and sometimes even stream using OBS. Will Linux cause any issues for me as a newbie? I've always wanted to swap to Linux, but was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle the OS for my daily use cases.

Is Wayland ready for gaming?

1 May 2024 - 9:02am

Based on my personal experience, there's still some games that trough steam deliver less performance, and some others where the performance is the same as x11, so will it improve in the future?

Dbd keeps crashing

1 May 2024 - 8:33am

My dead by daylight game keeps crashing in the middle of matches, which has caused me several time outs that have built up over time. I run Gnome fedora, and I have a 5600x cpu and an rx 6700 gpu, I’ve tried checking my internet connection, turning down graphics, verifying file integrity, switching proton versions, and contacting customer support (wasn’t helpful), however I can’t seem to find the issue. I run the game on steam and it runs really smoothly apart from the random crashing that occurs once every few games. I’m only a few months new to Linux so I’m not very good at troubleshooting it yet, does anyone know if I can somehow fix it, or at least find the root cause?

Does timeshift give 1:1 system? [Not enough karma to post on r/linux or r/archlinux so posted it here but i still think its relevant cause setting up gaming environment take many trails]

1 May 2024 - 6:29am

I use separate drive for snapshot and / partition uses ext4 file format.

I have created a snapshot and installed some packages and used for some time and restored the snapshot. while the package is installed but when i try to reinstall the same package that package didn't download but installed directly as if the build files already exist. So my question is if my system is 5 GB and I created a snapshot and installed 1 GB extra packages and I restored does the system restore to before snapshot size which is 5 GB or does the build files remain.

From my experience build files does exist while the package is uninstalled.

If time shift doesn't give 1:1 system then give any alternative applications that achieves my desired outcome.

Why is wow working on Wayland?

1 May 2024 - 1:07am

Using nvidia 550.67 drivers on Opensuse tw through lutris, i haven't had any flickering even though fps isn't running at max. Did something get fixed or am i just getting lucky? I haven't put much playtime in but it's not flickering at all yet. Don't really wanna get into an m+ and have it start though. Any info or others with experience? Just trying to figure out what is going on and why it is working.

Failing to run Anno1800 in Bottles

1 May 2024 - 1:04am

Just set up my first Linux system using Pop!OS. I managed to download Ubisoft connect through Bottles and install Anno1800, but when I go to launch the game I get the following error:

"Failed to enumerate the DXGI adapter. Error Code 1202"

Looking up the error code says that I need to delete the file "engine" (https://segmentnext.com/anno-1800-no-audio-fix/) but I'm not sure if I'm able to do that through Bottles.

Again, very new to Linux and gaming in general, any help is greatly appreciated.
