Pc won't go in suspension

6 May 2024 - 6:55am

As stated in the title my PC doesn't go in suspension anymore, I don't know what happened since yesterday was working like a charm.. I just installed libssl-dev, but I don't think that is what caused the issue

For context: I have a custom built pc and normally when I put it in suspension the video signal would go away and the pc would turn off everything (fans, RGB lighting on the GPU on the motherboard, ecc) and would appear as if it was turned off..

Now instead only the video signal goes away and pc stays "on" (the fan would stay on as well as the RGB light and the other things) Also it doesn't wake up, pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking a mouse button doesn't do anything and the screen stays black

I even tried using the command line with the command systemctl suspend but yielded the same result

I had an idea, can I ssh into the PC from a laptop and use htop to check if there was a process or something else that is keeping the system from suspending properly?

I am on Kubuntu 23.10

Anyone know why Proton-GE flatpak is discontinued?

6 May 2024 - 5:21am

I noticed that the Proton-GE flatpak is discontinued in Flathub and hasn’t been updated in awhile.

I’m bringing a gaming box back up that was using the Flatpak version of Steam. Does this mean I won’t have access to newer Proton versions anymore, or does Steam just manage Proton versions internally now?

Honkers Railway Launcher ban issue

6 May 2024 - 4:34am

Has anyone tried Honkers Railway Launcher recently, especially the flatpak version? I heard months ago that using this launcher to log in could result in account ban. Is this still an issue right now?

Xbox game pass on linux using a windows vm, Is it possible?

6 May 2024 - 4:27am

There is a post on the mac gaming subreddit from 3 years ago using parallels. To my understanding parallels is essentially just a virtual machine that runs windows 10/11. Surely the VM options on linux are far better and should be able to use the game pass app far more easier than an m1 based mac? But I have only ever seen mentions of xcloud on linux and not the native app whenever game pass and linux are in the same sentence. I do not see anything on this sub either in regards to this, game pass is such a great deal that it makes sense that someone here would have tried to make it work. Is it just not possible at all?

Linux gaming feels... unsustainable

6 May 2024 - 3:57am

So I've enjoyed plenty of games through Proton. I've got a Steam Deck and a PC that I use quite a bit to play games on Linux. There aren't too many problems I run into these days, although the ones I do can be quite annoying. Overall, it's a mostly drama-free experience.

However, I always have a lingering feeling in the back of my head that this approach of translating Windows APIs and playing catch-up with developers just isn't sustainable and could fall apart at any moment. What happens if Valve loses interest in us? What if Microsoft makes some changes to the Direct3D API and leaves us in the dust trying to get new games running smoothly?

Ultimately, my concern is that Linux gaming has a really shaky foundation based around one big gaming company throwing money at it. Developers don't really give a shit about us, and we're fundamentally super low on the totem pole. PC games are already often times ported lazily and sloppily, with little thought put into Windows users' experiences. What does that mean for us?

I understand that game development is hard and we have a small market share, but it's frustrating to me that it seems little progress has been made in having a more Linux-native ecosystem of games. I feel like leaning so much into Proton is going to bite us in the ass. Anyone else feel similarly?

My experience testing NVK from Mesa-24.0.6

6 May 2024 - 3:49am

I'm on LFS so getting Nouveau and NVK to work unfortunately took the better part of 10 hours. That's neither here nor there, it's on my system. Just a few days ago, I was daily driving using the nVidia proprietary driver on an RTX 3060 Ti, Ampere. So what do I play, and what was my performance using nVidia proprietary driver?... Well I don't play a lot of games, however the biggest example is SkyrimSE. My performance? Rarely did Skyrim ever dip in performance, smooth 165 FPS at 1920x1080 resolution sitting at Ultra High Quality.

When I switched over to Nouveau and NVK (what Mesa calls nouveau-experimental at the moment), Skyrim detected my hardware and set at Ultra Quality. So I went in thinking it was gonna be smooth, it was not... in fact, it didn't even launch beyond the mini OpenGL menu window before the game switches to Vulkan and for most people goes full screen.

The first bit is that MESA_VK_VERSION_OVERRIDE=<major>.<minor> must be set in the launch options, although I might put it in ~/.bash_profile and see if that works. <major> is 1 and <minor> is 3, for now. Setting this option allowed me to play Skryim beyond the OpenGL window, and performance in the main menu was smooth, although the mouse was ever so slightly lagging behind my movements.

Continuing from my previous save, still on the high settings I was on and in Riverwood, FPS was a good 2 or 3 FPS. It wasn't great, and was unplayable. Turning the settings all the way down for Low led to the game being 20 FPS. Definitely a lot better! Going even further down to 1280x720, FPS was about 45 to 60 FPS, even better.

I also tested another game, thou shalln't be named here, but the game failed to get past a black screen, even with the env variable.

It's obvious NVK is still being worked on and improved. The fact Skyrim can run at 45 FPS at 720p is pretty good and it's getting better. If you do play games like Skyrim though, perhaps you should wait even longer. It is taking time but things are improving rapidly. Hope this helps anyone considering to use the NVK driver!
