Proton games suddenly stopped working.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 11:55am

As the title says, any games that run under Proton in Steam suddenly stopped working. The games launch, but then I either get a black or a white screen. The PC kinda freezes. I have to Alt + Tab. Wait for a while til the PC "snap out of it", then I force stop the game from Steam.

This happened yesterday after I got an update for "Proton Experimental". Again everything that runs under Proton, regardless of the version, does the same thing. Native games run perfectly. Games that I run under WINE (not from Steam) works perfectly.

I tried "soft" uninstalling Steam using `sudo dnf remove steam` and re-installing it and that did nothing.

I'm on Nobara 39, Ryzen 3500 and GTX 1060 6bg. Any suggestions?

My Black Desert Online FPS = 1/2 my monitor refresh rate

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 11:49am

First of all is my system: -OS: Void Linux - runit -Intel CPU -GPU: Intel UHD 770 + AMD 6700xt -DE: gnome45 -Monitors: 3440x1440-144hz + 1920x1080-60hz + 3840x2160-60hz I installed "Bottle" via flatpak Use "Flatseal" to prevent "Bottle" run as wayland session. So that it will run as x11 under wayland

In bottle i use default setting, and proton GE

When i run the game (Black Desert Online) with my main monitor plug in 6700xt i will get exactly 72fps no more and GPU utilities is around 70%

The strange thing is when i switch plug my main monitor to intel igpu uhd 770 (4k screen will be handled by 6700xt, and 1080p screen plug-in intel igpu too) iget the windows performance level and GPU utilities at 99%. Good sight

But i cant using this kind of set up because: + it consumed so much resources on my UHD 770. So i cant use it to record my gaming sessions + also tried running under x11. Same issue

So i wonder what causes the problem? Is there any solution? Thanks

A pixel art no man's sky?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 11:18am

Hi fellow Linux gamers

I have released a new update to my space action sim game: Away to the stars I develop the game on Kubuntu and always test it on the steam deck, it is also natively compatible no need for proton. It has been my passion project since 2016. And I have been implementing many features:

You can dogfight for survival or land on planets to find valuable resources, look for the most efficient ship by buying them or stealing them from your enemies, play with the housing market to become rich, explore an infinite procedurally generated universe looking for your best home. Chill in your cockpit while discovering what the galaxy have for you. Uncover the new home for humanity with the intriguing story line. Play the free prologue and give some feedback:

Thank you for hosting

PSA: Don't lose your saves - Steam removes proton prefix without warning when you uninstall/remove the game from library

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 10:15am

TL;DR: back-up your saves before uninstalling Steam games or removing entries for non-Steam games from your library (in case you ran the installer through Steam).

So it turns out, that whenever you uninstall a Steam game or remove a non-steam game from the library, Steam will remove the Proton prefix directory for said game.

What this means is, if a Steam game stores saves not in the game installation directory, but somewhere in AppData or Documents folder - so pretty much any modern game - the saves will be lost unless they're cloud-synced. Or, if you've installed a non-Steam game by running the installer through proton, the whole installation directory will be lost in addition to the all the other stuff in the prefix.

I found out the hard way losing my half-way-into-the-game playthrough of Oni (2001) when I decided to remove the Steam library entry for it and re-add it.

Also not every Steam game has cloud-saves enabled for some reason - e.g. Anno 1800 or Alice Madness Returns.

For non-Steam games a good way around this making sure Steam doesn't manage their prefix - install them via Lutris or manually through WINE. You can then still add them to your Steam library without worrying about accidentally nuking the game and its saves.

Recommended/best way to play Roblox currently

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 9:28am

I hate Microsoft (Windows has too much adware). I want the most seamless experience possible to play Roblox on Linux Mint. I have dualbooting enabled already in case I really need something, but having to restart my PC just to play a specific game, and then restarting when I want to do anything else seems really annoying. VMs and especially mobile emulators might work but would be cool if it would open Roblox website open requests directly and run smoothly, not work like a phone i.e. can play desktop only games, no onscreen movement joystick, etc. Windows VMs seem overkill. I just want the most seamless experience (if that would be dualbooting, that's fine, but that's not very seamless at all)

Very strange mouse lag problem

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 8:37am

So, when I used arch + Wayland, the experience was usually good, as good as it could reasonably get on Nvidia drivers (NVIDIA GPU) but there was always this very strange issue. Anytime I moved my cursor of lots of text on a browser like Firefox or anything like that, and just in general over clickable options, it got super laggy and it became almost a lower fps. But, whenever I got into a game, the effect was gone entirely, or at least reduced so much I couldn’t notice it. It bugged me so much and I couldn’t find a fix for it, so I switched back to windows and it was fixed. I’ve heard this is because of explicit sync not patched in, so I just wanted to clarify what the issue is so I know when I reinstall when explicit sync is patched in. I followed some ordinary gamers guide which is about 8 months old but always worked for me. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_JYIAaLrwcY Is this maybe a driver issue? Distro: Arch plasma 6, driver 550, dual monitor setup (75 and 144hz) AMD CPU also made sure to run firefox on native Wayland, was an issue on all apps, even with only one monitor plugged in.

Is there an API for SteamDeck verified data?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 5:46am

I am wondering if is there an API for SteamDeck verified data, I just want to get the Proton version, I do not care much about the other data, because they are easily acquirable.

Chromeos Linux terminal steam installation

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 5:32am

Hi!

It's been about 14 years since I fiddled with my dad's red hat/mint Linux PC, which had a GUI and a file system that did not make sense to my then 20 year old windows-trained brain.

I am now the less-than-proud owner of a Google pixelbook. I've been separated from my desktop, and would like to try and see which of the 500 games in my steam library are functional on this thing. If I had a USB adapter and thumbdrive (do we still call them that?) I'd flash this thing over to whatever the community is comfortable with these days... But I'm also quite poor ATM and want to see what I can do with the chromeOS virtual machine.

Roughly two years ago, I somehow managed to install steam and even got MechWarrior Online running at about 2 seconds/frame, but I've since done some wipes and now I'm struggling to figure out how to install steam at all.

I have enabled developer mode (the boot sequence that disables the OS safety check). I've enabled the Linux developer tools that give me the penguin terminal.

All of the terminal commands that Google comes up with to install steam invariably fail. It seems that each step is outdated, and I am not plugged into the Linux community enough to figure out what little bits of the commands I can change to make them work.

I have a friendo who uses Linux on a daily basis who might help later, but atm he is indisposed and I'd appreciate some external input.

I need terminal commands to configure the machine and subsequently to download, install, and run a Linux version of steam and any necessary dependencies using only terminal commands. The chromeOS Linux terminal says that it is "penguin," if that helps identify anything.

I'm sorry if this is not enough info. If I can provide more details, I will!

Theory for COD under linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 5:01am

Alright hear me out yall. I have a theory but no clue how to execute much less where to start. As we know the recent CODs do not work under linux, or if you magically get it started you're not playing online at all. This is where you nerdier nerds come into play. My theory is to somehow run the NT Kernel in a sandbox that COD is able to see and use. Is it possible? I have no fucking clue. But, given the crazy shit some of us within the Linux community do, I feel someone would figure it out. Outside of that, biggest issue I see would be getting Ricochet to recognize it. And no, I'm not talking about using a VM of any kind. But, does anyone think it's possible? I already located the NT Kernel files on my Windows drive. Yes I know, I can boot into windows and play it no problem. But I want to see it run under Linux.

How to enable MangoHud in all steam games without having to type in MANGOHUD=1 %command% command?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31 Mar 2024 - 4:10am

Hey all,

recently got MangoHud working as i love using MSI Afterburner on Windows. Is it possible to have MangoHud enabled always in the background so I can toggle it on and off whenever with right shift + F12?

I heard about GOverlay that could help with this but I tried installing it through the Github as well as the software manager in Linux Mint and the application itself just will not launch.

Is there anything I could do or do I have to manually go in every game and type in that command in launch options?

Vortex can't manually set the location of my game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Mar 2024 - 10:11pm

Vortex mod manager couldn't automatically see my game so I click the option to manually set the location of it in it's current directory. Vortex can't see the game at all on my drives directory. I don't know what do do about this.

I can click to get to my computer/ z drive/ home/my profile, but there is no way to get to my games past that directory. How do I get vortex to see my games?
