Halo, in Linux, on an ancient Mac Pro

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2024 - 6:58am

Halo MCC running superbly in Fedora 39 on a 2010 Mac Pro with an RX580.

No tinkering needed: just installed and went.

With this computer getting long in the tooth, I was facing the expensive possibility of having to both build a gaming PC and get an M2 Mac Mini with maxed-out storage and RAM.

Linux just gave me the freedom to consolidate into one OS!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2024 - 5:42am

Hey all I just decided to try out Ubuntu again and I was wondering if someone could help. I downloaded Steam, turned on Steam Play and downloaded Balatro, but I'm noticing significant lag in the game, whenever a menu moves up or down.

When I start the game up in offline mode specifically, I’m getting the “app running” error after I click the “go offline” button on the Ubisoft prompt when there is no internet. Is there any fix to this?

Can't hear any voices in Skyrim

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2024 - 2:16am

So I'm on Fedora, trying to play Skyrim (the very first edition). I can't play special edition or anniversary edition cuz I don't have a powerful enough system (no GPU to be precise) and I got the game through “unconventional” means. Anyway, as the title suggests, I can't hear any voices when I play Skyrim, but everything else I can hear. The subtitles are there, their mouths move, but alas no voices. I've tried searching for a fix, but I couldn't find one that worked for me. Please lemme know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 21 Apr 2024 - 1:33am

This only happens when cooler master is installed and linux has loaded up, never in bios or anything. It just starts flashing on and off randomly and the fan speeds dont really change. My fans are plugged into the corsair commander core

Tried running a Linux distro again after 7 months and play a game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Apr 2024 - 11:03pm

I have a dual boot setup with Windows 11 and Arch, for nearly a year now. Completely neglected it until I booted into it today, installed 7 months worth of missed updates, and wiped/updated every config file I could find. I spent an afternoon setting up stuff while reading the Arch Wiki, tweaking things, troubleshooting stuff, and so on. It was fun but there's unfortunately still two major dealbreakers for me.

  • One is blurry text and icons when using fractional per display scaling (in KDE Wayland). Granted, Windows doesn't handle this perfectly either, but still marginally better than Linux, where systray icons on both monitors are still blurry, and so are desktop icon labels on the primary monitor. Fuck me for having two monitors with different DPIs I guess.
  • The second, bigger issue is that Nvidia's current beta driver (550) still doesn't support multi monitor VRR! I've used VRR monitors for about four years on Windows without issue, this is a basic feature! Disabling the secondary monitor is not always an option, notably when streaming games with OBS (which is a can of worms I chose not to open up this time since no VRR is a dealbreaker anyway).

I did really appreciate that Steam/Proton installed and launched Mirrors Edge Catalyst without any intervention necessary, and it ran like it should (it even worked around the EA launcher requirement somehow). However, Steam also ignored the desktop scaling factor and flickered like crazy lol. There have been a couple minor annoyances, glitches and instabilities, but I won't nitpick this time. The lack of an Nvidia control panel that has feature parity with Windows does hurt though.

I've been using Linux based systems on various laptops for at least 10 years, despite sometimes spotty driver support (touchpads and fingerprint readers), and I've been happier that way than with windows. I don't play games on laptops and I genuinely like how KDE looks and feels, as well as how the Linux infrastructure feels as well. I've been putting up with pre-release Kubuntu 24.04 on my laptop the last week or so with its repo hell and its unforgivable insistence on snapd and it's still better than booting into my dusty Windows 11 install.

I just unfortunately can't replicate the experience of everyone on this sub who is fully convinced Linux is on par and even faster (how?) than Windows for desktop gaming. I didn't even delve into HDR or anti-cheat. I'm not trying to criticize the hardworking contributors for any of these projects or diminish the advancements in the Linux ecosystem (Steam/Proton is amazing), I just sometimes feel like a lot of users on this sub live in an entirely different reality from mine and it's so strange.

Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts and vent a little. btw anyone else really annoyed at the new KDE system settings?

Gaming from a ntfs drive

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Apr 2024 - 10:40pm

Is there any way to make games run from a ntfs drive,i am open to reformatting the drive to something else as long as windows can also read and work with it.

Ive tried running them as is,but nothing opens,be it with dxvk or proton.

Ideally without using 3rd party drivers to make windows read linux formatted drives, ive played with those in the past and they are hit or miss.

Is there any drive format that works for linux gaming and can also be read by windows,if not any other fix to make linux play nice with ntfs drives?

Ive tried in garuda and ubuntu 23 and everything refuses to open.

Fan Control on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20 Apr 2024 - 10:13pm

I'm testing how my setup works on linux, everythink is working but im still strugling how i'm able to contol my fan setup on a linux distro. I'm using 9x Corsair QL fans powered by 2x Comander Core XT Fan/Hub. Liquidctl can see my 2x Comander Core XT and my all pluged in fans but my Commander Core XT is not supported sadly. CoolerControl can see my 2 Commander and i can set all my fan speed, but as soon as i do "sudo systemctl enable --now coolercontrold" in the terminal to start the program my fans flashing strange as long as i keep it enable. If i go in the settings to Deamon and Restart Deamon my fans stop flashing and as soon as it restarted it starts again to flash. Does anyone know a workaround or know some other program to control my fan setup on linux. The Youtube link shows how my fans flashing if CoolerControl is running.https://youtube.com/shorts/ehRHcnPJUjQ?feature=share
